Subject: 2008 Dirty Dozen Keepers and Discussion
Posted by: Khahan
- [561119313] Wed, Jan 02, 2008, 16:59
New thread to start for the 2008 season for The Dirty Dozen. We will be naming 7 keepers this year.
$10 in fees are due by Opening Day (just get them in by mid-March to be safe). GO will send out an email to the group with his mailing address again.
I'm going to send out a mass email to let everybody know to check this thread. GO can use that to send out his address for dues.
7 keepers must be posted by Jan 31. We'll start the draft late Feb to early March. |

Khahan, do you have a list of all the draft picks swaps?
Also, I wanted to look at possibly adding an IF spot. I found this work really well in various leagues I've been in. There always seems to be extra 1B/3B especially floating around and I'd like to put those guys to work.
I am looking to trade Ryan Howard for a comprable 1B (or a good SS). I love the guy, but right now i have Utley, Howard and Hamels - and thats just too many damn Phillies.
I'm also debating my last keeper - so if you could offer one of these "here is the guy to 'replace' Howard, and then pick a guy from my leftovers" type 2-1 offers, I would certainly be interested.
Barilko - I'll be in touch since you seem to have a nice set of leftovers worth looking at.

GO,
I just checked last night and have any emails concerning trades saved at my hotmail account...which I can't access from work. This weekend, I'll sit down and post all trades involving picks here.
As for adding an IF slot, I'll put it up to a vote. I see altering the roster format as a major change so we will need a 3/4 yes vote for it to pass (in other words, at least 9 yes votes).
As it is befor the draft and before naming keepers, this is a vote to change the 2008 roster by adding an IF slot to what we have always used.
All votes must be 'yes' or 'no' Please do not vote that you will go with whatever we do, or that you do not care. This does not help decide whether or not this is a move that should be done. So take off the skirts, be men and cast your votes.

I was a major supporter of this last year when we talked about it, I am in Canadian Favour of adding an extra IF spot.
Also, after a flurry of trades, I have another announcement to make:
Carlos Beltran and Troy Tulowitzki have moved onto the trading block. With Jimmy Rollins, I have too many SS's.

I agree with DaBomb. If we aren't drafting until March anyways, I don't see the need for the huge push for keepers.
If I recall correctly, I think last year we even extended the deadline to after the Super Bowl...
Plus I am sure Great One is trying to make more trades or something and could use the extra time...

Fausto is a big question mark, in my mind. He sucked two years ago, and then has a CYA-quality season. He's young, so maybe he'll take it the next step and continue his great season last year. But he might just as well be a one-note johnny.
As an Indians fan I hope he kicks ass. But I'm not holding my breath.

Thats not a bad pickup for them, not that great on offense, but based on his fielding stats he should have won a Gold Glove last year over David Wright. Never a bad thing to add a Gold Glover to your IF. I know I enjoy never having to worry every time something gets hit at Mike Lowell (all time Fielding % leader at 3B!:)

Barilko, Yahoo will be up and running whenever Yahoo decides to get up and running. Usually they are active around Feb 10 or so.
And yes, this is good time to remind everyody of that rule. All drafted players must be listed in the yahoo database to be valid. There are no space holders, there is no claiming rights for when he is added.
Also, the draft will continue if you make a bad pick. It is up to you to email me your replacement pick and if others have picked your guy, tough. You should have paid more attention. :)

I can't believe I got all this done in one afternoon. All keepers are entered and all trades that I am aware of (I used my ones stored on email and the ones posted in the 2008 thread) are inputted.
Please DO NOT DRAFT YET. I am starting the draft and setting a pause. I think this will keep people from picking. Please take time to review the keepers and the traded picks. If any are incorrect or missing, email me:

Might have been a bit of a reach, but after seeing all the managers between my first pick (1st overall) and my 6th overall pick that are in need of a closer, I feel good about my selection.

Made my choice. I was thinking my plan had a big chance at backfiring. I was targeting one of two closers and one of 2 outfielders with my first two selections.
I figured I would be better off grabbing one of the closers and then hoping that one of the outfielders dropped to number 6. Luckily one of them did, otherwise I would be second guessing myself the rest of the draft.

There are some REALLY nice round 1 players out there. Considering we kept 7 each this is almost like round 5 or 6 in a non-keeper draft. To get some of this talent at this point is pretty nice.

Always good to see two of your non-keepers taken in the first four picks of the draft. Markakis is great, but had no spot on my team, and Jenks is smoke and mirrors. But I hope you guys enjoy having them.
I am ready to pick when Holt does. Feel free to send me an email at this address. It might help speed me up. Remember to tell me who Holt drafted.

Great One, I already have 2 outfielders, a first baseman, and a DH. If I'd kept Markakis, that would have totally frozen up my draft. Tejada is a shell of himself, but he's still a big step up from a lot of the shortstops I would have if I hadn't kept him. Wouldn't he have also been a first round pick? I'm more surprised that I couldn't get any kind of value for Markakis before the draft.
In other news, I took Matt Cain with my first pick. I considered him to be the best player available after the keepers were done, so I'm glad to have him.

Matt Cain was rather high on my list as well. I think a lot of people would overlook him because his W total was so low last year. This caused his rankings to be shot. He ended up getting not much press during the season.

the funny thing is that you were trying to be sarcastic.
meanwhile - Pujols: .327 avg, 32 homers, 103 rbis, 99 runs... Hafner: .266, 24, 100, 80 Tejeda: .296, 18, 81, 72
did they have seasons up to their normal standards? no.
did they have pretty damned spectacular seasons? yes.
you can certainly point to those players as reasons as to why you didn't win the whole shebang, but i'd chalk it up to your first 10 draft picks, which included Scott Rolen, Mark Prior, Ryan Dempster, Joel Zumaya, Ray Durham, and Armando Benitez.
you definitely had a few gems last year, but all in all, the beginning of your draft was pretty awful last year.

This guy here is dead. Cross him off then.
Now this is the spirit I'm looking for. Keep it up.
You can't put Hafner in that list. He had a very pedestrian year, especially when you consider he was only a DH for most of the year.
And Tejada, too. I mean, he didn't come close to the numbers of undrafted.
Any way you look at it, it was a pretty bad draft. But enough to keep me in third (and give some credit to the other guys I drafted).
This year, it's on. I'm pretty happy with the draft at this point.
Oh and Yovani Gallardo sucks. AND he's not going to be ready for opening day.

re: 149 The draft was stopped for about 15 minutes, and then restarted. I think it was just Khahan trying to figure out how to sneak Yovani Gallardo off my roster and onto his.
I knew Yovani wasn't going to be ready until mid-April, but come July he will be posting all-star numbers...I hope. Its a keeper league, and he's a big time prospect, and I needed some pitching!

I have five shortstops rated ahead of Hardy who are still available. Besides, if 10 were gone, why not wait a few rounds? It's not like people are going to start grabbing shortstops since all but one other manager already have theirs.

As for Bruce, I don't really regret taking him, just thinking I maybe could have waited 2 rounds. But then with some of these prospect hungry teams that have no chance of contending against us powerhouses this year, (See Tree, Blue Hen, etc.) he might have been gone by then.

I was happy with the furcal pick. He should get me 30+ SB and a .280 BA isn't out of reach for him. If he pops out 15HR thats just a bonus. All he has to do is stay healthy. But I was looking at what I felt was slim pickings on SS. I saw 3 other teams that needed 1 and figured I might as well get the best of the rest.

Yeah, Weeks is much more valuable in an RIBC-style league than in Dirty Dozen. But I still think that he's going to score a million runs in that lineup, and steal bases, and it means that I don't need a crappy middle infielder.
As we know, I had Weeks last year, and almost kept him. Good to be able to get him back this late.

Weeks may very well turn out to be a 20/20 guy this year and I see no reason to expect less than 85-90 runs from him. But his BA will be a liability. And he can't score a ton of runs unless he's on base. Even for an RIBC style league I think his OBP would be pretty pedestrian or just slightly sub-par.

blue hen, From looking at your dismal picks, I'm assuming that you didn't have a chance to prepare for the draft.
all, since blue hen's poor draft may hurt the parity of the league, i propose that we start the draft over...i'm sure we'll still finish before the start of the season

I'll make no statements about Gagne being better than Neifi Perez or anyone else. At this point, he has a closer's job on a good team and appeared to be healthy for most of last season, and very effective for part of it. There's a big dropoff to the next closer. As my third closer, if he approximates 2007, it won't be bad.
As for Liriano, he's obviously been justifiably praised as one of the best pitching arrivals of recent years. And he's young and he has all the potential in the world.
But I have plenty of keeper worthy players, and I don't think Liriano will be so great in 2008.

Eric Gagne is Canadian...must...not...say...anything...bad...so...hard...
That being said, I don't see Gagne being any worse than Joe Borowski. As a third closer he is decent, and I don't think he would have been on the board for too much longer.
And yes, I almost have a monopoly on the Blue Jays Outfield, but my rationale was that if Great One can stock up on Red Sox players, I can get a few guys from my favorite squad too.
Nothing beats sitting in the seats and knowing you can cheer for your home team without thinking about the negative fantasy implications.
Nice to see Astade throwing his hat into the trash talking ring!!!

Gagne as a third closer is nice. In fact if your only expectation is for him to fill the role of a 3rd closer I think you'll end up very happy with what you get. He's certainly not the 62-straight save closer of yore. But he's not the spaz we saw out of the Boston bullpen last year either.

I believe you mean 84 straight saves. [insert trash talk about Khahan's lack of statistical knowledge here]
Da Bomb, I hate to put it this way, but that's exactly my point. The "definitive" rankings have Soria far below Gagne. Soria's only been good for half a season, plays on a worse team, and doesn't strike out as many batters. Sure, he's healthier, but even he has already had issues.
Of course, you're the champ, so it's hard to question you.
There we go! Barilko just took Todd Jones. Now I'm REALLY happy I took Gagne.

16) OK, I know everyone has been waiting for it. Alas, according to both parties involved, it’s not true. I wish it were. Heck, both Rickey Henderson and John Olerud have said they wish it were true. But it just didn’t happen.
The story went that a few weeks into Henderson’s stint with the Mariners, he walked up to Olerud at the batting cage and asked him why he wore a batting helmet in the field. Olerud explained that he had an aneurysm at nine years old and he wore the helmet for protection. Legend goes that Henderson said, “Yeah, I used to play with a guy that had the same thing.”
Legend also goes that Olerud said, “That was me, Rickey.” Henderson played with Olerud on the Blue Jays and the Mets.

In June 1999, when Rickey Henderson was playing with the Mets, he saw reporters running around the clubhouse before a game. He asked a teammate what was going on and he was told that Tom Robson, the team’s hitting coach, had just been fired. Henderson said, “Who’s he?”

In 1996, Henderson’s first season with San Diego, he boarded the team bus and was looking for a seat. Steve Finley said, “You have tenure, sit wherever you want.” Henderson looked at Finley and said, “Ten years? Ricky’s been playing at least 16, 17 years.”

A couple more: (really we could start a whole Rickey Thread)
A reporter asked Henderson if Ken Caminiti’s estimate that 50 percent of Major League players were taking steroids was accurate. His response was, “Well, Rickey’s not one of them, so that’s 49 percent right there.”
I didn’t believe this one at first. However, I emailed a few contacts within the Sox organization and they claim it actually happened. This is priceless, it really is.
The morning after the Sox finished off their 2004 World Series sweep against St. Louis, Henderson called someone in the organization looking for tickets to Game 6 at Fenway Park.
During a contract holdout with Oakland in the early 1990s, Henderson said, “If they want to pay me like Mike Gallego, I’ll play like Gallego.”

3-6 weeks. Could be worse.
In 2007, Brad Lidge had a 3.36 ERA and an 11.82 K/9. And now he's the closer for a playoff team, even if he'll miss a couple weeks. Definitely have no regrets about keeping him, although I guess drafting Gagne was probably a good idea.
As for Percival, I just don't see him finding success in Tampa. Maybe he will, but it would surprise me.

I called an audible, and Troy Glaus is a pretty good choice for an audible. I almost waited a few more rounds, since everyone already has a third baseman, but with no better option, I figured I'd go now. The one thing that I notice about Da Bomb's team more than any other, is that he doesn't seem to fall for the allure and risks associated with prospects and young players. Old proven vets.
Maybe I should adopt that strategy next year.

We also brought you Insulin, Paint Rollers, The Telephone, 5 pin bowling, and The Wonder Bra.
Ok...and for those that could care less about inventions, Kristin Kreuk, Elisha Cuthbert, Evangeline Lilly, Erica Durance, and Rachel McAdams.
I would, on behalf of the entire country, like to apologize for giving you Keanu Reeves and Bill Shatner.

We're done! I would do a write about every team, but that might take me too long, and I am crunched for time.
My top 3 teams, in alphabetical order:
Barilko6 Da Bomb Holt
If Tree had one more closer, or if he picks up a waiver wire closer early on, he would be in there as well.
Of course this is purely based on opening rosters and does not take into account who works the waiver wire the best, and we know that makes all the difference.
As for my team:
After a flurry of trades before the keeper deadline, I was setup with a young solid core of great players. I wanted all my keepers to be young, but was willing to keep Beltran and Berkman too.
With my first overall pick, I was targeting one of the leftover closers, and then either Nick Markakis or Alex Rios. Looking at the charts, I figured the OF's had more chance of dropping to 6, so I went old, Takashi Saito.
My starters are all way too young, and I hope at least 3 of the 5 young guys come into their own this season.
I have youth in bunches, from Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, Alex Rios, Howie Kendrick, and Jay Bruce, to Yovanni Gallardo, Chad Billingsley, and King Felix, to Papelbon and K-Rod, who seems like he has been around forever!
Worst case scenario: Braun and Tulo have sophomore slumps and my pitching never matures. One of my closers gets a serious injury.
Best case scenerio: All the young guys get better with more experience, and the pitching lives up to the hype and I win it all!
Good Luck all, and let the flaming of my post begin!!!

Well this can be a case study in strategy. Since I have complete garbage for closers and you have all the studs. We'll have to see how that shakes out in the pitching categories. But I guess it also impacts hitting cause - for example - in those spots you could have taken another hitter.
Of course if I didn't trade away 5 draft picks, perhaps I would have gotten a decent closer early on! :)

Looking over my roster, I think I accomplished most of my goals for the Dirty Dozen. I believe we are going into our 5th year? I have 1 8th place finish and 3 10th place finishes. In the keeper league I founded.
Of course going hard after 'established' (note this really reads aging) vets such as Wood, Thome, and Guerrero early on did not help much. And having an affinity to draft and trade away young rising stars such as Teixeira, Rollins and Reyes probably had about the same effect as the aging star phenom I was so into.
This draft I wanted to break away from that. Yes, I added Manny Ramirez in the off season. But I think most of the predictors are off on him. I firmly believe he'll have another 30 HR year. With that said, I went with a lot youth.
My goal was not to win this year but simply start to field a competitive team. I wanted to build a Tampa Bay Devils Rays type team: Constantly at the bottom of the pack. Nobody gives any thought to to them. But suddenly one year you look and say "Crap, he's got a ton of talent there."
Looking to finish 4th-6th this year and just keep building on that.
I should be competitive in SB and I think my RBi's will be competitive. Probably middle of the pack in HR's, BA and lower end in runs scored.
Who cares about predictig Saves. But I should do well in other pitching categories with a good young core of pitchers.
Favorite pick: Rafael Furcal in round 3 Least favorite pick: Evan Longoria over Edwin Encarnacion in round 14.

I was in a strange spot, cause the best value I could come up with (and mix of veteran and youth) happened to be every valuable Red Sox and Phillies player (except Papelbon, Manny).
I also was depleted on the draft pick front only having one pick in the first 4 rounds I believe so it was a LONG wait. I took Gordon for the obvious upside - but also to double my options of trading Ryan Howard since Gordon is a 1B/3B so I can look to trade Howard for a 1B or 3B and go from there.
I hoped to use one of my extra later picks on Bruce or Longoria. But thats alright cause I have those guys in other leagues and its good to mix things up.
Not having picks kind of forced me to go with the crappy closer strategy and boy did I run with it Todd Jones and George Sherrill!! whohoo!! :)
I'm pretty happy with my mid-round OF -> Franceour and Chris Young picks as I think they are both trending upward. Also scooped up Griffey late to mix and match in there for spot starts. Young's main problem is his AVG - but when you look a bit deeper into his stats (specifically his abysmal BABIP) I expect that to improve greatly up to the .275 range. 25/25 along with that would leave me very happy.
In addition to Howard, I'd like to move the very young (yet proven!) Cole Hamels... for comprable players not playing in Philly or Boston.
Nobody ever picks my team before the season starts cause I always make some peculiar choices, and I usually have to outwork everyone else as the season goes along. It will take a great effort (and luck) this season to earn me a trophy again.
I'm a big fan of Da Bomb Squad who has proven hitters - but especially for all that beatiful pitching - Webb, Kazmir, CY and Harang is sweet. BH has a lot of boom or bust type players and his best pitcher is Matt Cain which scares me (as good as Cain is, I don't see him as a guy who should be leading a staff). Barilko has a good squad, and a ton of closers! Elsewhere I like the blend and balance on Rev and Holt's squads. Youth and upside of Khahan's....

His hitters aren't exactly young - Ortiz, Vlad (and certainly Sheff) are all question marks. Reyes and Arod are certainly rock solid, Corey Hart was a good young add... but Ortiz, Vlad, and Sheff don't really scare me. Ortiz's HR's have gone way down since they reconfigured Fenway too. And Vlad doesn't really run anymore.

I went into the draft seeking to blend speed and power, but also to trend towards youth over experience. The punting of saves was an after thought.
In some ways my team will probably be a middle of the pack team again, but it does have a bright future. I like my outfield with Matsui the greybeard, but plenty of upside with Sizemore, Upton, Victorino and Rasmus(debated with myself but since we don;t draft keepers his potential 5x5 talent was too much to pass up). My MI should be serviceable, but not great. My corners are pretty well anchored with Fielder and Zimmerman{hoping that the new stadium helps him up-tick his offense).
Pitching well I'm hoping that NY does not swallow Santana too much, Oswalt bounces back, Francis continues to master Coors, and of course Boof and Wandy lead the all name team.
Then theirs always the waiver wire and next years draft:)

Barilko - Although Webb has been great, so too has King Felix and it seems as if this may be the year he has a dominant campaign. With him being so young and realizing his potential, you may have won that trade starting even this year. I guess I began to lose patience with him after a couple relatively disappointing seasons. I do like Chris Young though, and he has looked good in 2 of his 3 starts. Must cut down on the walks though.
My pitching has been doing well for me up to this point, it's my hitters who have been disappointing and have me hitting .238. Ortiz and Reyes need to wake up!

Yeah, Webb has been amazing. It was tough to part with him, but I thought with Bedard coming in to take away pressure, King Felix would be able to step up his game.
The pick upgrade was key too, I liked moving from 3 to 6.
I couldn't keep Young anyways, so he was a throw-in in my mind.
We shall see how things play out!

I'm gonna need another SS with Rollins out... would trade a pitcher or a young OF like Franceour or Chris Young or Ellsbury. Preferably someone that can backup a few positions when Rollins returns so its not just a 2 week rental.
I can package Stephen Drew with someone as well for and upgrade.

meanwhile... from the book of "never listen to Blue Hen about pitchers"
Chapter 1 Mark Prior Chapter 2 Daniel Cabrera Chapter 3 I got Rafael Soriano and Matt Cain, who were the two players I targeted as soon as keepers were selected. Boo yah.
I'll give you Soriano cause he got injured and that happens to the best of them. Cain? The ace of your staff? your prized draft pick that we all missed out on? 5 games started. 0 wins. 2 losses. 5.27 ERA and 1.61 whip. Granted he pitched good enough to win 2 of those games... but the team hitting for him is completely useless, as I indicated above. Hitting .243 as a team and only 37 runs in 22 games.

I like Reynolds but don't really have room either. Part of the reason I think this league should add an extra IF spot to accomodate all the extra good 3B/1B options we all have that wind up stuck in the UT spot daily (so they also indirectly affect everyone having extra OF's that could then slide in the UT spot).

Just saw this now. Damn boards keep pushing it down before I see it.
Are you kidding me? I'm still pretty darn happy to have Cain. And with Hudson and Maine, I feel pretty good about my pitching staff.
And you've got a short memory. I think Oliver Perez had a 2004 in there somewhere. And I wish I could find some of the stuff I said about Jake Peavy. And Aaron Harang. And John Lackey. Now Jeremy Bonderman, that's another story.

Can we add your ranking of Soria "WAY below Gagne" to the list? To your credit, you acknowledge Gagne was certainly an all or nothing lottery ticket... but Soria has show he's pretty darn good and has 0 competition for his job. You say his track record is short, but I don't see Rafeal Soriano as having much more of a track record as a closer and you kept him.
I don't understand why you are happy with Cain as your top pick, but to each his own I guess. I see Maine as more of the ace for that trio.
I want to know Barilko's thoughts on all those closers now too.. keepers and 1st round picks to get 1 more point in saves? Don't think I even drafted one and we've got similar points.
Usually the arguemtent on top closers is they help in ERA/WHIP -- well... TJones and Sherrill do blow in those categories and I still have a 12 in ERA and 11 in WHIP. Why? because closers don't throw enough IP to make any large impact.
Now Barilko does have very good pitching numbers, but he's hurting on the hitting side. So on the surface you could say his hording of closers did their job - they nailed down pitching points. BUT if you reverse your thinking... had he picked some better hitters with those early picks, he wouldn't be struggling as much on the hitting side. That is my point of view.

Hey...I only used 1 first round pick!!! The other went to Alex Rios.
And its only May, give me time for the injured guys (Tulo, Kendrick, Wells) to get back to the field and start putting up their stats!!!
I have good bats on the team, they just need time to get their groove back...
I predict a top 3 finish for these guys!

Yes Barilko, but I believe you used the #1 overall pick to take a closer. And GO's point is still valid and unanswered. As for 'injured players,' until just Friday Wells was performing about as expected. How much did you really expect from Kendrick? And Tulo only went down the other week meaning you've had a months of production from him. Taking a hitter with the #1 slot would have added much better depth/protection across 3-5 categories than taking a closer to maybe push 1 or 2 extra points in 1 category.
So I'll reiterate GO's question because I'm curious too, "I want to know Barilko's thoughts on all those closers now too.. keepers and 1st round picks to get 1 more point in saves?"
Sorry, can't let you off that easy. ;)

I was missing this smack.
I do think Gagne will bounce back a bit. He's struggled but everybody struggles sometime. At least he's been fairly healthy.
You can't get on me for Gagne and Soriano without acknowledging Brad Lidge. I used a keeper slot on a closer, and also risked having a double whammy and it's worked out pretty good so far, right?
|
358 | barilko6

Hmm...I am not so sure you can count Tulo's .152 average as production! haha
And as for Kendrick, Tree can attest to how highly I valued Howie this year, rightly or wrongly. But, I did also add Kaz Matsui and Jeff Kent as insurance.
You all know I am a big closer guy, I think they help in WHIP, K's, ERA, and of course the ever elusive saves category.
Now with all of this being said, considering I am currently sitting in 3rd place (knock on a huge piece of wood, very huge), I am not so sure how many of you have the right to question my strategies right now. If in a month I start to falter, (and I probably will!), then flame flame away. (And GO, don't go on with your I am in second place crap, blah blah blah, you are only 2 points up on me!) Soon I will be champ!!! (I hope) (As long as Lance Berkman keeps hitting as if he's facing Eric Gagne with each at bat)
And remember, Me and the future Oopsy Daisy of Rotoguru still have our side bet going, although with the way he welched on his NCAA Pool promise, I cautiously wait to see if this promise comes to fruition.

No doubt Lidge is working out. I always liked him, just seemed he turned into a headcase the last 2 years. Lidge/Gagne were like the double lottery ticket... had to figure one or the other would work out so they kind of went together. Soriano is more the disappointing part cause you must have figured it was Soriano and then Lidge/Gagne as your #2.
I forgot this, but Barilko used an early pick on Bruce too (which I still think was a good move, maybe a round later)... and now seeing as he should be up before the ASB I think he's in a good spot. So he gave up a little offense the first couple months, but I think he's set up pretty well long term cause Bruce is gonna be a good one. Long term planning. Had I not had Alex Gordon, I probably would have scooped up Longoria along the same lines of thinking.

What side bet is that?
Actually, I was hoping that Lidge, Gagne, and Soriano would have 90 saves by August 1st and I could trade one or two of them for some hitters. Guess that didn't work out. You're right - Soriano sucks worse. With Gagne, I knew it was a risk. Soriano was supposed to be one of the best closers in baseball this year. I guess that didn't happen.
Don't forget - things change quickly in baseball. Mark Reynolds is now hitting .230.

Good call GO, I was thinking of the Gagne/Soria comparison the other day. Percival has also been pretty good.
Meanwhile, my team is under performing, but I ain't panicking quite yet. I do have 55 out of 60 points in pitching, it's my hitting that's stunk. Since my post on April 17th, my average has 'skyrocketed' to a .252 clip. Reyes, Ortiz, and Vlad seem to be heating up, and when Arod comes back - it's over! ;)

You misunderstood barilko. I was referring to the time during the draft when blue hen took Gagne and mentioned that he was a level above any remaining closers. Afterwards I drafted Soria, who, as we now know, has been great.
See posts 191,192, 197 and then 209.
I'd say my biggest dissapointment so far is is Sheff. I drafted him thinking he'd have a big year with the bat, and I think he could have one if he was healthy, but he has some serious shoulder issues.

i hated doing so. i still think he's going to be a REALLY good catcher.

I do hope V-mart turns it around for you. Carlos Lee is still posting a sub-standard BA (.257 since I got him). But in that same time frame he has 5 HR, 3SB 11 Runs and 29 rbi's. Congrats to Joe Mauer for his first HR of the year. That gives him a combined 1 HR + SB!
Meanwhile, my questionable keeper keeps on chugging... Stat of the Week Between the seventh inning Friday and the fifth inning Saturday, Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury stole six bases against the Orioles. I, for one, thought Bruce to be a guy who will contribute for some time, but thought he wouldn't be up until the ASB. Cincinnati's OFs had excellent spring trainings and I thought his way would be blocked until the ASB. But injuries and production falling off in generally opened it up for Bruce.
A good medium risk/high reward pick.
So long as he plays half his games in Great American Ball Park he's going to get some gaudy numbers.

Agreed, Bruce is tearing the cover off the ball as of now, and his value is on the high side, and he is playing in a nice hitter's park. I too didn't expect him to be up and producing this early, so that is a bonus, but looking far down the road, I wouldn't say that he's "had his run".
Part of being successful in fantasy baseball is getting in on the ground floor on guys like Ryan Braun, Jay Bruce, and in years long ago A-Rod, Hanley, Pujols, etc, etc, etc.

Why do you keep mentioning Mauer? Is it because you're trying to trade for him? If he's so bad, why even offer?
Besides, Mauer is hitting .319. He's not the reason I am struggling. Rickie Weeks. Travis Hafner. Daric Barton. Troy Glaus. Nick Swisher. Eric Gagne. Rafael Soriano.

I sent an offer for Mauer based on his name brand value and my need for AVG hitters... but I didn't realize how average (pun!) he's been the last 2 years. He's basically evolved into Jason Kendall of a few years ago. And he's certainly not ahead of McCann, Molina, Soto, Martin, Victor, Doumit or a healthy Posada at this point. He provides a good AVG and plenty of runs... no power, no steals, average RBI's. O's in those categories really pull your overall numbers down. Just ask Juan Pierre owners who struggle to fix RBI's/HR's all season long.
Side note - how does Victor Martinez have 0 HR's as well?
Gutsy call alert... I'm benching Ryan Howard the next two days vs. Harang and Volquez. Lord I hope this doesn't come back to bite me. I've been taking chances like this all year though, been burned a few times but have been trying to play the matchups/splits and igore "the name on the back of the jersey" this season more than ever.

Just about any seat is good, easy to get in and out of the parking, right off of RT95, great food (cheesesteaks, crab fries and BBQ in addition to standard ballpark fare).
On a side note, Jon Lester was great last night. Its a shame I benched him fearing a shootout. It was also nice to watch his ERA continue to drop with each out all the way down to 3.18 -- I mean he's no Matt Cain. But he's pretty good I think :)

Tree, time to hop off the Salt lick again? Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Tex, 1/C – Considering the recent call-up of catcher Max Ramirez, who was sitting on a fat 1.121 OPS for Double-A Frisco before getting the call, it's a bad time for Salty to be struggling. Or what.
But yeah, four on the bench and another at DH. It's definitely a trend. Mike Jacobs is available or a mid-round - oh wait a minute, wrong league.
It occurs to me that we have large benches in this league, and I really kind of like that. It lets you stash the guys you think you'll want.
Cain is doing quite well at this point. I had him in TSN for that start. Lester's got the numbers, but I prefer Cain. There's some fodder for you in a couple years. I also preferred Ryan Kohlmeier a couple years ago, so who am I to judge?

BH - while those bench spots are nice, wouldn't it have been even better to have an extra IF spot (and one less bench spot) so we all just don't have these people rotting away on our benches? Seems like everybody had extra 1B/3B we couldn't quite squeeze in the lineup, which really hurts trading.
Same problem in Baseball 101 for what its worth.

Peter Gammons calls Brad Lidge and Joe Mauer the two most indispensable players in baseball. As you know, those were my final two keepers this year. Even though it was a pretty terrible season for myself, I can take some consolation there.

Thats all well and good for building a "real" team, but they aren't the most indispensable when it comes to fantasy. Catchers and relief pitchers just don't have enough of an impact on the overall stats. Reminds me of the joke headline I saw about Jeter "Yankees Win with Jeter Walkoff Intangible" Just look at Mauer, his AVG and Runs are awesome, yet you only scored a 6 in runs and 2! in AVG. Keeping a closer? you scored 1 more point in that category than me - I didn't keep or even draft a closer til the last couple rounds lol... as illustrated with Barilko. And his theory was that they would help him dominate K's WHIP and ERA -- but you both got beat in those categories.

I don't think that's entirely fair. Lidge was certainly quite helpful to my team. More helpful, in my estimation, than Nick Markakis would have been. And my 2 in AVG is more due to Dunn, Swisher, and Weeks (and a lousy Carl Crawford season) than to Mauer.

Hey Chuck good to hear back from you. If a spot opens old managers get first priority.
As for BH I agree 100% with GO on this one. Mauer's value in a draft is that he provides better stats than most other players at his position. But lets face it, the final counts don't give extra credit for HR's from a catcher. His BA was great but he had 9HR (and no reason to expect significantly more). 92 runs is very nice and 82rbi's is decent. But lets face it, how many players in the pool out there have the potential to bat .300, hit 20+ HRs and have 85-95 runs and HR?
As for lidge, he contributes 1 category (maybe 2. 89K's can make a difference but only 67.1 innings is not enough to really affect whip/era). I would never keep a closer even a Putz or Papelbon. I can serve my categories better by keeping a good starting pitcher who can contribue W's K's whip and ERA.

My best starter last year was Aaron Harang. Should I have kept him?
And I think it's great to have Joe Mauer and whatever outfielder you can find on waivers vs. Nick Markakis and Bengie Molina. At least this year, because the outfielder I found on waivers was Jermaine Dye.

No doubt its easier to find a random OF cause there are so many... of course I got Doumit for free! Damn I just looked too - Bengi Molina? .294 15 HR's and 94 RBI's, nice season At the start of the season, I would have said keep Harang of Lidge for sure, of course he was a disaster, but nonetheless. Assuming they both would have had good years, I'd rather have 3x as many good innings. Certainly of your keeper options, Mauer and Lidge were solid choices. Why can't I space properly in Google Chrome! :)

OK so who do I send my address to? Better luck next year guys! :D
Not many closers I'd consider keeping (unless I just didn't have enough real keepers), but Nathan is a solid keeper in my book. I expect I'll be keeping McCann too (153/509 68 R 23 HR 87 RBI 5 SB .301). He may be the first non-turd catcher I've ever had in fantasy baseball.
Just noticed that I only had 2 pitchers with more than 7 wins (Lincecum 18, Burnett 11). I got 23 wins from relief pitchers, 29 from Lincecum and Burnett, and the 41 other W's came from the other 23 starting pitchers I used.
Lincecum is a Monster, in case anyone didn't notice.

GO I normally pay for it and don't mind. However I was thinking of asking if we'd like to institute a lottery system in the next draft. Say the last 5 teams are in a lotto to determine draft order? That way there would be no incentive to tank it if you were near the bottom. You can play for pride w/out worrying about ruining your draft position next year.
But I'm open to suggestions and don't have a problem putting yours on the table. I'll store it and probably towards the end of Jan I'll open the 2009 discussion thread and post it there for review/vote.

There is an entry fee for this league, right? So we could just tack on a dollar each... no big deal. No reason you should get stuck paying. Lottery is a great idea (first round only of course). I'd probably only say the bottom 4 teams should be in the lottery though. Give them a weighted % something like --> 12th place 40% chance, 11th place 30% chance, 10th place 20% chance and 9th place a 10% chance. And only have it rearrange those 4 spots so the worst the last place guy could get is pushed down to #4 I don't think a team smack in the middle of the league should also have a shot at the #1 pick.

I've played in some leagues with lotteries, and I've never really understood their appeal from a strategic standpoint. The effect seems to be to give teams that didn't finish in last place a shot at the top draft pick, yes? I suppose that it would help some leagues in which a manager is obviously tanking to finish last and get that top pick, but I don't think wiggs or Weasel (the bottom two teams here) were doing anything like that. So a lottery will have the effect of possibly taking away the top pick from Weasel to another team (mine or Khahan if we're looking at the bottom 4).
I guess I just don't see this league as being the kind that would need a lottery to solve any problem.

PD, I think you just convinced me the other way. If you're, say, 10th, you might be inclined to give up. You'd be stupid not to, under the current rules. This makes the bottom part of the bracket interesting, and lets managers see how good they are even when they don't have the best players on their teams.

Not proposing for here, just kind of a neat idea -- I was once in a league that had a really interesting concept that made a game within the game for all the teams that were out of it for that season. They basically had a "cut" (think golf)... come Sept 1st (I think it was), and it was either the bottom 4 teams, or teams within 20 points of last (or commish discretion?)... can't remember... those teams were then given the "cut" and they were now competing with each other for their first round draft pick. Whoever finished first out of those earned the first pick and so on. Of course you gotta ask the team -- do you think you still have a chance to finish in the money? if they agree they are done, they can opt in "the chase for the pick". It made the last few months interesting for my team that got buried by injuries. I worked my butt off to get up to the first pick the following season.
