1.1 Alex Rodriguez, SS

Randy is a year older. Pedro is too fragile for me. I'll go with the best player in the heart of the best offense. Head and shoulders above the rest.

Of course my first 3 picks, in order were Pay-rod then Randro, followed by Pudge for #4. Why not go with it.

Ok guys, I think by the time my turn comes up in round 2 again, I may be gone. Its 3:45 here, I'm leaving work to pick up my daughter. I should be able to be on later this evening (maybe 1 hour from now) to keep going.

Ivan is kind of a double edged sword, with so few catchers, he's the best, yet he's been plagued by injury in middle of the season the past 2 years.

I'll be back online later tonight, oh around 7:30 or so, I'll have picks #23 and #26 so the field will be cleared up a little bit, but there will definently still be studs.

Good question MNG. This is my absolute, first ever draft league so I don't really know. I have 2 players in round 2 I'd like to have (just in case 1 is picked). My first pick, will again be on the hitting. If I take a hitter in round 2, I'll switch over to pitching for round 3.
I think there is more quality pitching to choose from this year, though, so early on I may favor hitting as the depth should be there for pitching.
Unless of course you guys force me to start taking pitchers. ;)

I really dont have a way to go. I think i will take what i feel is the next best available player, regardless of position. I think there is alot of depth in alot of spots. I know i just kind of gave you a runaround, but it is because i really dont know. Also I wont be picking til probably tomorrow so I am not set on my picks yet.

blockaa looks good so far, clemens and pudge went way too early IMO, specially pudge considering he is out untill at least june.

I also feel sammy droped a few spots. I think that if you look on pure stats (regardless of position) he is the best hitter out there.

khahan,
Bench is just who you choose to put on the bench. Sure you can have 2 catchers. Also Utility is just any player that doesnt fit into your line up. It doesnt necessarily have to be a player listed as utility. If you got pudge and piazza one could be a utility. You cant plug pudge into an OF spot though. Hope this was helpful. If not, just ask again andI will see what i can do.

Ok, I think I follow you Wiggs. So I have a catcher on my bench, I can only have him plugged in as catcher. But if I have a catcher picked as my utility man I can plug him in anywhere?

Tduncan? Where do you see Pudge is out until at least June? I just read today he is 100% healthy and ready to start spring training on 2/15 or 2/16.
He's been working out w/ A-rod over the winter.

khahan, no, you dont pick him as a utility guy, anyone can be utility. Like tonight you could have pudge be utility and tomorrow if you have jeter and AROD you could play one at ss and one at util.

from CBS sportsline:

"Rodriguez, still recovering from knee surgery, is not expected to return until June. A knee injury is a tough thing for a catcher to recover from because of all the squatting that is required at this position. He probably won't be too productive offensively when he finally does return, so don't bid too highly for his services on Draft Day."
88Khahan

      Thu, Feb 07, 2002, 14:33
tduncan, from espn.com as of Feb 1.
"Rodriguez, going into the final year of a $42 million, five-year extension he signed after the 1997 season, has spent the winter rehabilitating his left knee. Rodriguez missed the final six weeks last season after surgery for tendinitis.

"The knee's OK. I'm doing the whole workout, rehab, running, doing everything," Rodriguez said. "I've been doing a lot of work. It wasn't that easy, but I made it and feel good."

Texas pitchers report to training camp in Port Charlotte, Fla., on Feb. 14 and begin workouts the next day. Rodriguez said he would be there the "15th or the 16th." Full squad workouts begin Feb. 21."

Well, I finally had a chance to do some research for the next 2 rounds or so. I've drafted before, and I admit I like being in the middle a lot better than being on either end. How the next few picks turn out will determine how things go... anyway, I'll be around tonite and I'll check in every half hour or so-- I love being on a Network ;). Actually, it should speed up sometime soon. B/c as soon as SO picks, we know the next 2 picks and then we wait for Dan. I go right after Dan and I'm all set-- I have a pretty good idea of who I'm going for. So, we should get back up to the top (or close to it) by the end of tonight. I can't get on SO's case too much since I took a while to make my pick yesterday. Hopefully we can rattle off quite a few picks this weekend.

it is a bad idea to post picks here. Learn someone's email and send a private email to someone who picks AFTER you so everyone ahead of you doesn't know your strategy.

Just my advice, but I wouldn't post my picks but I often mail my picks if I'm going to be away.

Let me chime in here...

Kendall, EH, what are you smoking....The city wants him out (or wanted him out when I was up in Pittsburgh last summer).

Right now, everyone thinks that he will be a journeyman in a few years...the pop in his bat is not there anymore, I know a bunch of Pirate fans that think that the backup (Osik I think) is a good prospect.

You've got some balls, buddy.

If the pop is gone he still is a .300 hitting, run producing, base stealing catcher. I think he'll rebound from last year. He is a great player and if he becomes a "journey man" i hope his journey comes through Detroit cuz we'd love to have him!

OK, so maybe I won't leave quite yet. But honestly, position scarcity does stuff to people. I was struggling between a few spots, but went w/ Pujols. It would be hard to convince me that Pujols is a top 20 player in all of baseball, mainly b/c he doesn't have much experience. I'm hoping for a sophomore non-slump.

All that being said, I don't know if I would have taken a second-tier catcher this early or if it would have been Kendall, but that's why this is a "Mock Draft". I think it'll be interesting to see what our first position "run" is. I have a hunch as to what, but won't say anything at the moment.

Khahan... I have a guess you may be thinking of Nomar-- just a hunch. No need to confirm now :)

the 2nd round is allmost complete, so we can now compare "couples":

(1) sledge -> a-rod / ???
(2) Mr. Nice Guy -> johnson / rivera
(3) CanEHdian Pride -> pedro / kendal
(4) Khahah -> pudge / hudson
(5) Chuck -> piazza / pujols
(6) dan -> helton / maddux
(7) tduncan -> sosa / alomar
(8) strike one -> schilling / bagwell
(9) wazaaap_guy -> vlad / jeter
(10) wiggs -> giambi / clemens
(11) blokaa -> bonds / manny
(12) mikel -> ichiro / chipper

Mr. nice guy is the only one with 2 pitchers, and he is also the only one with a closer so far. out of 23 players picked, only 7 picthers. 3 catchers allready is kind of a surprise to me.

blockaa went with 2 strong sluggers, wazaaap_guy with 2 great all around players.

worst so far? IMO, pedro is a big injury risk for a top 3 pick, and kendal went a couple of rounds earlier then he should be. EH I can see you are high on the guy, but he surly would have been still out there for your next pick, maybe even a round later then that.

the whole sledge is 1 day in and 1 day out is not doing any good for the flow of this draft...

he also has full rounds that take place between his picks....it's pretty tough for a "book end" to send a queue. Relax guys, it's a slow live draft. Slow isn't just a clever name, at least he told us he'd be gone for awhile, that's really all we can ask for.

Another point that I want to make is not for you guys to rush picks. If you are here, take your time. Speeding up by a few minutes isn't going to go a long way in speeding up the draft if someone isn't at their computer waiting. If they are there they probably will be there 10 or 15 minutes later too.

Early round picks are important, i rushed my Kendall pick and it almost hurt me. So relax and make sure you make the best pick for your team. That way when the draft is done you won't have any regrets (or excuses) ;)

This is only the second time I have drafted for baseball (did one 2 years ago). Do you guys think I am being too reactionary?
IRod goes, I take Piazza
Chipper goes, I take Pujols
Nomar goes, I take Tejada

I wasn't really thinking this when I picked, except for Tejada, b/c I feel there is a SS drop-off after that. Obviously I can't undo my picks, but I really don't have much of a strategy, though I am keeping tabs on what's out there. Anyone feel free to respond.

still, a very good run.

for hitters, I noticed the main strategy so far is look for good players in the tough positions, and not the best players aveilible.

in pitching, it's really every man to himself, all about predicting the breakthrough season. the interesting rounds are still ahead, so far everything is pretty normal.

Chuck - I think your picks have been very good. Piazza and Pudge - it's just a matter of who stays healthy as to who puts up most points. Pujols was a stud last year and at a weak position. And you are right about SS. After Tejada it really goes downhill.

The good result of being reactionary for you Chuck, is you may force some of our hands. I was going to pick Tejada in the next round for the very reason you picked him this round. Now I've got to go back and rethink my whole round 4 strategy.
At the same time, if you only react to something, you will always be behind in the count. In a situation like this, it has its pros and cons. At this point (considering the players you've picked) I think the pros are outweighing the cons, but continuing to be reactionary too much longer will put you behind the 8-ball very quick.

I guess if everyone else is going out tonite out might as well follow their lead. We'll see how everyone picks with a hangover tomorrow. I'm kind of surprised noone slammed on my picks of 2 starters in a row. They both have Cy Young potential - At least that is my hope. I don't have any problem playing it out... it's not easy to find 12 active players, and it looks like we just did.

but if we do decide to keep this, we need to close the roster limits starting lineups. I think we stated talking about it in the other thread, and then decided to delay the decision. now may be a good time to bring it up again.

At first I wasn't really all that interested, but now I'm all for playing it out. If it happens that some guys don't want to play it out I think we've got a good base for a league and we could draft again when the time comes. -- As far as draft order is concerned I thought I would like having the first pick. Last year I picked in the 5 hole and i liked it a lot better. You can really get stuck on the wrong end of a trend if you are at either end with 2 consecutive picks. I am waiting patiently though for this 2 pick deal to work in my favor. We'll see.

sledge, you arent going to pick again for about 2 days. We are averaging about 1 pick per 2 hours. I have been sitting here for hours waiting to pick so I dont think me going out tonight for a couple hours is going to hurt anything. Besides, Strike one has been holding everything up for 2 straight days now. I even voluntered to make his pick for him and he declined. I am also up for making this a real league, but the problem is we need to assign point values for things because that will change alot of picks. Peace.

I'm all for a keeper league. I have no idea what that is or how it is scored, but I'm willing to learn and will have fun doing it.

Personally I think Giambi is absolutely gonna CRUSH at Yankee Stadium, but you never know what the change to the Big Apple will do to a player. MVP I predict.

yeah, big time die hard yanks fan. I try to catch as many games as possible and hit the stadium a few times a year. Even yankee haters love to go to the stadium. It might have been early for clemans, but i didnt think he would get back to me.

2 things.
1, wiggs- you do not need to assign point values for anything, this is a standard 5x5 roto league. you get points based on your position in certain categories versus the rest of the league (12 for most hr's, 11 for second most, etc.)

2, I'm all for making it a keeper league but itll be a lot more complicated. first off wed have to see if everyone would consent to it, because you make differnt picks when playing in a keeper league than you do playing in a 1 year league. second, we'd need to decide number of keepers, years they can be kept, etc.

oh and also i don't know what the position requirements are, people were throwing out different ideas but did we decide on anything. doesn't relly affect picks yet but will later on.

Johnson, Clemens, Schilling and Maddux. All of them are fighting the age monster. You just HAVE to wonder when its going to catch up to them. Of course, even a bad year for one of those guys is better than a good year for most pitchers.
At the same time, Pedro and Kevin Brown are fighting 'injury prone' status. They are almost in the same boat.
Clemens though, something just tells me this will be a major off year for him. Good luck with him.

lol sledge. If you ever get a shot to go to yankee stadium I would strongly recommend it. It is something your son will never forget. Possibly you may never forget either. I was taken there when i was 6 and I still remember like yesterday!

I dont know why anyone will bash clemans. He has been one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball. He won 21 games last year and a Cy young. He is a bulldog.

NY is a long ways off. We usually take a road trip once a summer. Watched Bonds at Coors field last July. No homeruns that day, but I caught 2 foul balls during batting practice. Our trip this year will probably be St.Louis to Cleveland, Cinci, and maybe Chicago. Watched a game at Wrigley a few years ago. That was awesome. I'm about 2 hours from KC so most of my games I catch there. usually once a month anyway.

clemens is one of my all time favorites - Behind Nolan Ryan. (My son's name is Ryan). I think everyone just expects him to fall off at some time. But the man keeps proving everyone wrong. I'm going to catch a power nap guys. I've slept about 6 hrs. the last 2 days. I'll check back around 4:00 cst

I'm not bashing Clemens. I'm a huge red sox fan, and even if grudgingly at this point, I've got to admit he is a great pitcher. Yes, many people expect him to fall off at some point (most people expect everybody to fall off at some point). And he has consistently proven them wrong.
Its just a gut feeling telling me he'll be off his game this season.
To be perfectly honest, as I said, all those guys, (johnson, maddux, clemens et al) are fighting age. I'd be very surprised if at least 1 of them didn't have 1 bad year in the next 2-3 seasons. I'm talking 4.50+ era and within 2 game of a .500 record on either side.
And great news on the priceless tour, sledge.

After looking through the picks....I'd have to say that I love Dan's picks thus far.

I'm intersted to see how things pan out for the next few rounds because I see many routes to take now.

Though Dan did make some quality picks in the first 3 rounds they were at the 3 deepest positions in the draft. It will be interesting to see how things pan out. I've always been under the impression that drafts are won and lost in the middle rounds. We'll see what happens.

4-9 are very important IMO.

i dont see why clemans wouldnt hold up. He has been doing awesome for the past few years and last year he was unstoppable.
Giambi with the short porch should hit 45+ bombs, drive in 140 RBIS and bat about .333. Cant ask for much more then that.
