First off . . . wiggs, you know I'm just messing with you. You can call him Clemans if you want. :)

This is the last proposed position requirements list I saw:
  • 8 pitchers (starters or not)
  • 1 C
  • 1 1B
  • 1 2B
  • 1 3B
  • 1 SS
  • 1 IF
  • 4 OF
  • 1 Util
  • 5 Bench
I'm assuming this is what we are using. Please let me know if something is to be changed.

I was a little surprised at Mikel's picks. Delgado and Sheffield are both solid, but I felt certain he'd snag a P. Anyways, as for my pick . . . there are several great outfielders left that I would love to have, but I really can't use 3 out of my first 4 on OF . . . SO . . .
4.2 Phil Nevin

I think I'm going to be around pretty much the entire weekend. Maybe we can do some serious damage the next couple of days.

Personally I think there has to be a relief pitcher requirement seeing as how the "closer" has become such a huge part of the game. Saves is a big deal and I think pitchers should be broken up.
8 pitchers with at least
5 starters
2 relief

I'm back, and as expected, all my prospects for this round are gone...

I like sledge's idea for the requirements, but I think 1 of the utility spots should be an IF spot, so we won't be able to stuck 5 OFs in the starting lineup.

that gives us:

8 P (min 5 starters 2 releivers)
1 C
1 1B
1 2B
1 SS
1 3B
1 IF
3 OF
1 DH/utility
5 bench

thats 23 players, 23 rounds to the draft.

what do you guys think?

Just meaning that basically 1 extra hitter on your roster would be an infielder and 1 outfielder. Outfield utility does sound a little strange. More or less you are getting two dh's.

Well. Talent gets pretty watered down by then. In a 10 team league 25 rounds gets you 250 players. In a 12 man league 23 rounds gets you 276 players taken. I don't know about you, but do you really expect the 300th player in the draft to do much. Part of the fun of a league is picking up unknowns off the waiver wire once the season starts. But I'll do it either way. I guess if you had more players you'd have more trade bait.

sledge I agree that those late round picks don't have a lot of upside, but if the roster spots are there (and I agree with EH, we need more roster spots for depth) we might as well draft for those spots, see how good of scouts we really are.

I have a query about the rules pertaining to pitching, you're required to have 5 starters and 2 closers right? The 8th pitcher can be either SP or RP. Or can you have 4 and 4, etc?

It depends what type of league you play in. Last year in Sandbox your starters got 162 games and your relievers got 140 games and it didn't matter how many of each you had. What was kind of said before was 5 and 2 and 1 pitcher that was your option to use either way.

tduncan

Rather than just having 3 outfield positions and 4 infield positions the infield and outfield utility spots allow you to accrue points on your roster by utilizing players that would otherwise just be on your bench. It has absolutely nothing to do with a players ability to play more than one position for his team. Your infield utility player allows you to pick an infielder from any infield position to add to your point total. likewise for your outfield utility player - it's technically a 4th outfielder that would otherwise be wasting away on your bench.

I understand that. I just think that having an "OF utility" is kind of strange, because it's basicly a 4th OF. you can't utilize anything from that.

I think we should have an IF spot, for any position but OF, and a DH spot for another extra hitter (not neccesraly an OF).

You will also find that while some players actually only DH for their actual MLB teams that in fantasy baseball they are assigned a position. You'll probably notice that DH is not a position on the ESPN player rankings. Your infield/ outfield utility players do not have to be a DH. They can be a DH or a regular position player.

I didn't mean DH as an actual DH (edgar etc.), I ment it as a "utility" spot (I like this term better too) for another extra hitter, from all positions.

whats going on with everybody anyway? 3 only 3 picks today.

hey, I don't even know what utilize is, it just seems like a good word to say :)

I think the Rangers outfield is pretty crowded and I think they'll try to trade Kapler - hopefully for pitching. The Rangers are stacked on offense, but their starting pitching leaves alot to be desired.

Checking in for the first time today . . . figured I would be holding everyone up. Ha! Disappointing to see that only 4 picks were made today. I figured we'd make real progress this weekend. No biggie I guess . . .

Initially, I was real surprised to see Soriano picked this early. But after doing a little research, I realized that might not be too bad of a pick. I doubt his numbers this season will be a big improvement over 2001, though. What does everyone else think?

I think he's top 5 at his position, so I wasn't that surprised to see him go early. I was surprised to see him go to tduncan who already had Alomar at 2nd base. If Jeter hits lead-off and Soriano moves up into the 2 hole look for his numbers (esp. run and stolen bases) to improve.

All righty, I'm just gonna give my schedule for tomorrow:

I'll check in about 10 Central tomorrow before I head out to church.

I'll then check in throughout the afternoon starting at around 1:00. I'll do this through about 5:30 C.

I'll be back again around 9:00 or so.

If it appears at any time that I'll be up soon before I leave, I'll send my picks to someone who is on. I have a pretty good clue of what I want to do for the next few picks (for now). Anyway, if others around me (esp from Khahan to the top) could list their schedules, I can plan out when to pick (hopefully) tomorrow.

Ok, I'm back. I'll be off an on sporadically today. I can't honestly give a schedule. But after picking one of last years biggest break outs, Lance Berkman I can just say I'll check back in. I managed to stop on last night but it wasn't up to me yet.
As for the extra spots, I'd rather see 3 outfield spots, 1 for each infield position, an active DH and the rest are bench. Whatever size rosters you want, 23 or 25. Make the extra's bench.
For pitchers, I like the 5SP, 2 RP, 1 whatever.

Nice graphics tduncan. I'm of the non-computer whiz ability group. I'm just keeping mine with pen and paper. As slow as this draft is it's actually faster than the one I was in last year, and then about half the league quit halfway through the season. One guy after sitting thru nearly 3 weeks of drafting decided he didn't want to play and put his entire team on the waiver wire in the 1st week of the season. That was a scrambled mess.

I was taking a look at some draft online and I noticed that those managers heavily traded draft picks in the middle of the draft. along these same lines, EH or khahan, if you were gonna pick a player that you think would still be available in the 5.9 hole, would you be interested in trading your pick this round to upgrade a pick elsewhere?

I think we'd be better off just to keep our draft order than to try to keep up with all that mess. I don't like the position I am drafting in either, but I think it's probably more fair than offering up trades in draft order.

I need somethign to do while we wait for CP to post (or wiggs to come back and check his que).
I just have to say, Rafael Palmiero is easily (in my eyes, at least)the most underrated player of our time. He was going to be my pick this round, too. So, again, I'm back to doing some research.
How many seasons did he put up MVP type numbers and not even get moderate consideration?

I find it quite unsettling that this draft is being made into a league since the title of the thread(s) has been MOCK DRAFT.

How can you have a draft for a league when the posistions guidelines haven't even been set. I joined since I wanted to MOCK DRAT, i said that at the very beginning. I wish to continue to draft a MOCK DRAFT, but will not be competeing in any type of league unless we re-draft once rules and posistions requirements have been set in stone.

sorry if this causes any convienences for you guys.

8 pitchers (any type)
1 C
1 1B
1 2B
1 3B
1 SS
4 OF
1 Utility/DH
5 bench
You can disagree w/ me, but I would like to start to get somewhere on setting the requirements in stone, ok?

Question SO, in the first 5 rounds do position requirements mean anything??

You know what positions you need and the only difference you might come across is that we will have a DH that can be any position rather then a utility OF.

I say UOF because the there is a UIF. With the DH, you could have 6 IF and only 3 OF. The 4 and 4 split is better.
115Strike One

In the first five rounds they don't mean that much. However, the posistion requirements are always in the back of my mind and i take into account with all of my picks except the first one.

There has been talk about keeper, non-keeper, now that would make a difference in picking a Larry Walker and an Adam Dunn (just an example). I would like to just finish this draft as a mock draft, and then have a REAL draft once the rules are set in stone.

its stupid redrafting with the same managers, this allows everyone to know every one elses trends and drafting strategies. on top of that, if this draft wasnt going to count I would put no thought in my picks, especially in the later rounds, because I wouldnt want anyone to know my sleepers and risky picks. we've only gone through 5 rounds and there were position ideas floating around before we started drafting. keeper league is one thing, i dont know if we should make it that because that would definitely effect who people picked. but just making it a league probably wouldnt effect peoples decisions all too much. i could be wrong, but i think most people want to keep this a league after putting in all this time and effort. i know i do.

8 pitchers
1 C
1 1B
1 2B
1 3B
1 SS
1 Utl
4 OF

would this be the starting lineup? if so, 18 is a rather large number. and if it is, then we need to go 25 round to allow a bench of 7.

5 batting and pitching categories. batting: runs, hr, rbi, sb, avg pitching: w, era, whip, k, saves. you get points based on how well your team is doing in each category. if all your players combined have 200 hrs and that is the most in the league, you get 12 points for that category. if you have the fewest saves in the league, you get 1 point for saves. the more points, the better.
