Try to get some speed out there.
I'm hoping he'll get more chances to run the bases and 'produce' runs this year since he doesn't a massive slugging lineup around him.

Khahan...did you know the only place Frank Catalonotto qualifys for is outfield...if we stick with 15 games to qualify at a position.

Is 15 games the qualifier or should it be 10 games?

for Catalanotto:

93 at OF
13 at 2b
11 at 3b
5 at 1b

since he has so many games at infield positions maybe he would qualify as the extra infielder position/utility?

That is actually what I had in mind when I picked him was my infield utility man. At this point in the game, it does not make much difference (though for future rounds it may affect who I pick). So if we could please get some clarification, I'd appreciate it.
I chose him as IF Utility because on most roto sites he was listed at 3rd, 2nd and 1st base as well as OF.
If the general consensus is that he should not qualify even for IF utility, please let me know as it WILL affect my next few picks.
For the record, my intent was Catty at IF utility and Uribe as a bench person.

IMO: He can qualify for utility IF if we stick w/ the 15 game rule b/c he has played 15 games in the IF, but can't qualify for any of the other positions until he plays them 15 times this year. I'm no expert on this, but that makes sense.

Unless... do games from last year get added to games from this year? I.E. if Catalanotto plays 2 more games at 2B, does that total 15? or does he have to play 15 in one season to qualify?

I agree I think he should qualify as the utility position but none of the infield positions on their own.

IMO it takes 15 games in a season to qualify for a new position...not added to the previous year.

Questions: What are the rules regarding pitching and moving pitchers on and off your bench? Can you rotate pitchers freely? Doesn't seem like you should be able to or you would have huge rotations? How does pitching work in 5x5? How does the bench work? Can you move players on and off the bench daily?

normally there are inning limits in roto leagues. Pitching is like 1000 innings...not sure of the position player inning breakdown.

Once your innings are gone, you get 0 points from that position.

Most 5x5 leagues have a 1300 inning pitching cap, and 162 games at each position. (162x4 for the OF of course.) You can rotate pitchers and hitters whenever you want, but if you have a massive staff you'll be out of innings by July, and you'll just be wasting starts on lesser quality guys instead of getting your studs' starts in the 2nd half.

The general consesus with 1300 innings is that its safe to start 5 SP's and about 3 3/4 RP's.

Please explain "starting" players Your teams have 8 pitchers. If its safe to start 5 SP's and about 3 3/4 RP's, then how are all you players not always starting? How often do you change who your starters are and when are points awarded... daily, weekly, at season's end?
37Rogue's Strikers

You can change your pitchers/hitters whenever you want, but your roster for the next day is frozen at midnight Pacific Time. (At least it was midnight last year, that may be changed this year.)

Points are awarded each day, based on who you have in your lineup/rotation. Bench players get no points.

The principal of 'leaving your 8 pitchers in your lineup for the whole year' isn't all that great. Think of it like in smallworld. Its dumb not to have RJ for each start, but did you keep Chan Ho Park when he was going to Coors? Using 7 or 8 SP's, and trying to get only their best starts, is the key of rotating SP spots. In the end those 7 or 8 SP's will give you 5 SP's worth of starts. Of course, if you have 5 studs in your rotation it may be wise never to move them off your roster. You get the idea.

Sorry if I'm being dense, I just want to make sure I understand this.
Opening day. I submit my line up as follows:
C LoDuca
1st Bagwell
2nd Kent
3rd Boone
SS Aurilia
OF Walker
OF Nixon
OF Lofton
OF Higginson
DH/Utility Catalanotto
Pitchers: I only put on Pedro and Clemens as starters but throw in Urbina for the save
Day 2 San Fran does not play so I substitute Uribe for Aurilia and whoever else I pick that qualifies for Jeff Kent.
I take Pedro and Clemens off and put on Williams and leave Urbina.
So for days 1 and 2 I get scored for LoDuca, Bagwell, Boone, Catalonotto, Walker, Higginson, Nixon, Lofton and Urbina
For Day 1 only I get scored for Aurilia, Kent, Clemens and Pedro.
And for Day 2 only I get scored for Uribe, Williams and my backup 2nd base?
One other question, are we worrying about order in the lineup? Submitting a leadoff, 2nd, cleanup etc, or just submitting who we want?

You can leave pitchers in your lineup on days they don't pitch and it does not hurt you one way or the other. No innings pitched equal nothing.

For hitters you only get 162 games per position so you might not want to substitute Uribe for Aurilia if you think Aurilia is going to play all 162 games. If Aurilia is facing Randy Johnson then you might want to consider Uribe instead of Aurilia for a day...

Thanks Chi-man. I got it now. One last 'stupid' question.
Any positional player aside from outfield can qualify for infield utility, right? So I can start Kent at 1st base 1 day and Bagwell at the Utility spot that day?
But just because I 'picked' somebody to be my utility man does not mean I can use him at any infield position, right?

Only requirement for utility man is he qualifies for either 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, C or has played +15 games in a combination of those positions. What you say in post #40 is correct. Can move a guy to utility one day and then back to a normal position the next day.

The inning cap was 1250 actually. 1300 was the private league I was in. The two public leagues I joined had it at 1250. In any case, we can set it to whatever we want, although 1000 is a small amount. 5 SP's take 200 IP each, and that leaves no room for a pen.

My vote would be to use whatever the yahoo default is.

MITH, they would go on your bench. We have 7 bench spots on our teams. I usually have 3 or 4 backup hitters, and 3 or 4 pitchers on the bench that I rotate in whenever I like their matchups. (Or if a pitcher is really struggling, put him on the bench until he sorts out his problems, etc.)

Ok, so if I drop a pitcher off of my roster, he takes up a bench spot and I have to a hitter to take his place?

Nope. You CAN start a C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 4 OF's and a Util IF, but you don't have to. You CAN start 8 pitchers, but you don't have to. In all, you have 25 roster spots. You can start only a catcher, one pitcher, and have 23 guys on your bench. Kinda stupid, but you can do it. ;) It doesn't make alot of sense not to have someone in each spot though, which is why I said you have 7 bench spots. In truth, you have 25 bench spots, and certain positions to fill.

You guys will definitely understand when we set things up on yahoo. Yahoo opens on Thursday, and I'm sure we'll have our league setup well before the season starts, so we can show you guys how things work.

We have really stalled...at this rate these last 5 rounds are going to take a month. If we can make one last push we can finish this thing.

I say if someone does not show up to pick for 12 hours we just skip them and they can make up their pick whenever they show. Unless the person leaves prior warning and then they should probably leave a one or two man queue anyway...

4 hours is a little harsh. I was trying to log in all morning, but work was having internet problems. Personally, I think if we just ask everybody to make a concerted effort to remember that he has 11 other people waiting and depending on him to choose we'll be fine.
Sometimes RL events will hold us up and we'd have no control over them. I'd rather just go on the honor system and ask everybody to post a notice if they know theywill be gone for an extended period of time.

Chicago post 59, Thats a good question. I think that the majority of the people would probably want to be able to use them at either 1st base or Util. But maybe we could go with the consensus on that one.

I'm here, but I have to run out for about 20 minutes. I'll pick then. Sorry guys. :(

One quick thing, Edgar will only be able to play at Util. That is, if we use Yahoo. You can't change a player's eligibility on Yahoo. (At least not last year, maybe you can this year.)

Ok, here's something we may need to consider since we are using yahoo...with rookies who have no playing time, how will they be qualified? should we even be able to choose them yet?

With rookies...I guess as long as you fill a spot on the bench with them we will be ok. They should qualify for their main position relatively quickly once they start playing and if they don't play noone will stick them in the lineup anyway.

Yahoo usually has the major rookies already in their player pool, and they add others quickly enough. Hows this: If you draft a player here and it turns out he's not in the player pool yet, you keep one bench spot available and pick up said player when he's added.

Oh wait, I get what you mean. Well, the rookie will be available at whatever position yahoo decides he shoud be available at. They're usually good at that too. (Maybe they look at minor league position history, I dunno.)

I'm responding to the post in #59.... I do know that if you use Yahoo players like Edgar Martinez you can only use as a Util player... I know this because I had Oakland's DH last year (I believe it was Ortiz) and they wouldnt let me put him anywhere besides Util.... I did have to wait for him to play 15 games at a position b4 I could use him anywhere else... maybe Ortiz's situation is different, but who knows.... hope that helps

That page was actually hard to find, and there wasn't a link to it. (I replaced basketball with baseball to see what I would get, and found that page.) So if they're saying they're not sure, and if the page didn't have a link, they're probably going to be delayed by a bit.

We'll find out soon enough.

I think it is fine to take prospects...but you can always fill your bench with a major leaguer now and then release him to pick up the prospect when he gets called up. Then again someone may beat you to him or draft him.

Everett...I don't see any reason no one drafted him before...he was at the top of my list of outfielders remaining.

Dimitri...was at the top of my utility guys left. He is a nice pick up since he qualifies for 1B, 3B, OF, UT...

It's amazing how my queue makes it to the last 2 picks and both get chosen... oi vey!

Well, I hate to make this w/o research, but I don't want to hold you guys up too much. I already picked him for my other team, and I think he is still out there in this draft:

21.1 Dustin Hermanson
115Chuck @ church

Khahan... no problem... I think he was the best choice out there. I thought Lee had a good chance to slide to me, though. Oh well, you win some and lose some.

I wanted to just get my pitcher this round as well and then I can go back to the "best player available strategy."

Everett was my back-up choice. I'm glad I didn't "have" to pick him-- didn't want to ruin my clubhouse commraderee... errr... fellowship ;-)

Good point on Everett, Chuck. I avoided him for the same reasons.
That and my Boston loyalty had to play some part in this. ;)
I haven't seen him yet and wouldn't mind having a back up to first base. With Grace getting old I think 21.2 Erubiel Durazo may see more significant playing time this year. Anybody know if he qualifies for another position, too?

Rogues...just some info...not sure but Frank Thomas might only qualify as Utility? Only had a few games at 1B last year...then again he only played like 20 games total. Not sure what Yahoo does in that case...maybe they take the previous year into account and he would qualify at 1B? You probably know better than anyone...just thought I would bring it up in case.
