Lucky 13 Fantasy Baseball Rules

Basics:
• Season – Full Season
• Slow draft via message board
• 13 teams
• 26 players on a team +2 farmers
• Positions – C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, (3)OF, IF, Util
• 15 games to qualify at a position (Yahoo! rule)
• 162 games maximum per position
• Pitching – (8) Pitching slots – any combination of starters/relievers.
• Bench – 8 players (any combination hitters/pitchers)
• DL – 2 players maximum
• Traditional 5x5 Categories – R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG – W, Saves, SO, ERA, WHIP
• Maximum 1300 innings
• Minimum 900 innings – if the minimum innings are not met the team will receive only 1 point in ERA/WHIP categories. This does not effect other managers points.
• Roster Changes Daily
• Unlimited Moves
• Waiver Time – 2 days
• Waiver initial order is reverse of draft order
• Retroactive Stats – No
• Unlimited Trades
• Trade Deadline – TBD on what Yahoo allows, will be the second to last date Yahoo allows.
• Trade Reject time – 2 days
• The trade reject time can be waived if both trading managers request the waiver and the commissioner judges the trade as no chance of veto.
• Any manager can call for a veto vote via an email to the commissioner.
• The commissioner will not release the name of the manager requesting the vote.
• Commissioner will then email each manager individually for a veto vote
• Veto votes are YES or NO there are no conditions involved. It is not the role of the voters to fix the trade.
• Managers not casting a veto vote will not count either way towards the veto percentage.
• Veto = 50% or greater of owners casting votes not involved in trade
• If a trade occurs where there are an uneven amount of players swapped (example: 3 for 2) the manager must leave a roster spot open for the trade to occur. Yahoo! cancels trades if a roster spot gets filled. In the case of a trade getting canceled because of this situation it will be required that the trade is made again and the commissioner will commit the trade immediately and waive the wait time.
• If a manager deliberately attempts to sabotage the league the commissioner has the power to banish that manager from the league and freeze the teams roster. (dumping star players to free agency, ridiculous trades)

Draft:
• 27 Round Draft
• 26 man rosters plus 2 farmer reserves
• Farmer explanation:
• Farmer = player not in the Yahoo! Database at the start of the season and must qualify as a rookie (minimal major league experience)
• Drafted in any round of the draft
• Each team is allowed one farmer pitcher and one farmer hitter
• Can be retained for the season they are brought to the majors and the following season if they are never released
• If the player is not brought to the majors during the season the following year the manager can choose to retain the player as a farmer or redraft another player.
• The 28th position will be a keeper. Keeper picks will be due before the start of the draft.
• The player must have been drafted by a team in the previous draft between rounds 14-27 and never been released as a free agent. Free agents not allowed. The player must be on your roster by the trading deadline and on the end season roster. Keeper eligible players retain their keeper status when traded. Keepers can only be kept for one year.
• Draft initial order will be random
• Inverse Rounds Draft Order (snake draft)
• Draft Trading Allowed – http://www.kffl.com/draftanalyzer/index.php
• Trades involving the highest draft pick in the first 5 rounds, the trade must be within 1000 points using the draft calculator
• Trades involving the highest draft pick in rounds 6-15, the trade must be within 500 points using the draft calculator
• Trades involving the highest draft pick in rounds 16-27, the trade must be within 100 points using the draft calculator
• 6 hour time limit with the clock off between 2am eastern and 8am eastern
• 12 hour time limit on the weekends no clock off time
• Starting in the 20th round there will be a 4 hour time limit
• If a manager has back to back picks they are allowed one time period and then both picks are skipped.
• Once a manager is skipped because of running out of time subsequent picks for that manager do not get a new time period until the manager makes their missed picks.
• Trades do not reset the time clock. The time is associated with the pick and not the manager.
• If a pick is skipped because of time running out the pick can be made as soon as the manager shows up. Players picked after the missed pick are off of the board.
• If a manager drafts a player already picked the draft will continue with the next manager and the manager who made the duplicate can replace the duplicate pick at any time. Since the draft immediately continues players selected after the duplicate pick are off the board as far as the duplicate manager is concerned.
• In the case where a manager picks out of order or someone other than the manager picking make an incorrect pick (wrong queue, duplicate pick) and others make picks after the bad pick the draft will revert back to the place where the out of order pick was made.
• Once a pick is posted to the message board the pick is final…removing the post and repicking is not allowed.
• A manager can leave picks with another manager if they will not be available to pick. Queues are encouraged.

Farmer Info

1) Each team is allowed one farmer hitter and pitcher.
2) They are drafted at any point during the normal draft.
3) To qualify for farmer status they cannot be in the Yahoo database on opening day of the season. *I understand this puts an extra burden on the managers and there is a chance you will draft a player with the intention of him being a farmer only to have that player make the opening day roster...in this case the player will lose farmer status and you can keep the player but not as a farmer...in this case I will allow you to choose a replacement farmer*
4) I will put a list of teams farmers in the commissioners notes and will try and watch for farmers as they make the bigs...if you see one of your players called up...please post a message and make a waiver claim on the player...I will waive the waiver time and fix the waiver order.
5) Once a player is called up you do need to add the player to your roster within (5 days) or you will lose the rights.
6) In the season the player is brought to the majors you can retain the rights to that player for the following season.
7) If you retain a farmer you can draft a new farmer the following year and your retained farmer will meam you have one less draft pick. (considering if this should be your last pick you lose or possibly a slightly higher pick?)
8) If the player does not see the majors...next draft you can choose to retain the player in your farmer spot or release him.
9) You can retain the farmer for as many years as you like while in the minors and still have 2 years rights when he joins the majors.
10) Spot starts and then back to the minors...if they are added to the Yahoo database the clock starts and they need to take up a major league position if you want to retain.

Stay healthy Albert!

As always, I am looking to pick up an extra first round pick. If anyone likes the depth that this draft has to offer and would be interested in moving down, send me an email.

Also very interested in picking up a 2nd or 3rd round extra pick if you aren't interested in moving your first round.

i am looking to trade down from this pick. I dont want to move completely out of the 1st round, but would be willing to move down to about 5th overall. I would be looking to move my 1st, 2nd and 4th for your 1st 2nd and 4th, or something like that. if you are interested email me, if not i will pick in a couple hours.

How have you been going about leaving Q's in the past? I'm heading off to work soon (about 1:30pm eastern) I doubt it will come back to me and can check in a little at work. But my email hasn'nt been working. (outgoing). I'll try to run some kind of diagnostic while I'm gone, but my computer skills are very limited.

Let me know if there's another way to leave Q's. Thanks.

I felt his 1B/OF eligibility made him extra valuable in this particular league (with the IF spot especially).
I also have more options depending who falls on my next picks... I am happy with the choice after sleeping on it last night. Or not sleeping I guess.

I gotta be honest, I for one think the trade calculator is useless (unless you are just using it for yourself to guage a trade). If I wanna make a trade, I don't care what that thing says if I think its gonna help my team. Every situation is different.

I think its part of the reason trades are so difficult in this league. Its a pain in the arse...

from the site - Explanation and Instructions
The trade Analyzer works by using a formula that assigns a value to every pick of a draft. The formula works through 352 picks.

This Analyzer is intended to be a tool in your decision process. As with any tool, use it as a guideline. There will be times when you will want to make a trade even when the Analyzer indicates that it might be a poor trade for you. And other times you might want to decline a trade that the Analyzer indicates is a good trade.

So if its just a guideline, I don't understand why we have to be tied to it. I'm gonna propose for next year that we scrap it.

I think the rules regarding the trade analyzer leave a lot of room to make almost any sort of trade. The initial thought behind it was only to protect against very lopsided trades.

With those type point differentials it would disallow very few trades. I agree that it makes sense to sometimes make trades where the analyzer says you are giving up more than you are receiving. The analyzer is just a tool...up to the managers to decide how much importance they assign to it...

Actually, in the past I have found this league to have MORE trades of draft picks during the season, although that is probably due to the lack of keepers.

Last year I made about 6 draft trades, and the year before I made 3 or so, and I remember you made a slew of them as well GO!

I just see so many players with value that I haven't seen a need to jump to get one just yet...

On another note, anyone finding great difficulty in finding players worth picking as farmers who aren't in the Yahoo database? I am picking guys that were just drafted a year ago and haven't gotten above Double-A -- and they are in the database.. its quite a struggle. Can I start picking high school kids? this kid from my hometown is a lefty and can really bring the heat! :)

What's intriguing about 2007 drafts in general is that there is a lot

variance in where people are taken than based on last year.

farmers: if your retained farmers are now in the Yahoo database...plan on drafting a farmer in this draft to replace them as they will need to be on your roster on opening day.
198barilko6
      ID: 2825597
      Fri, Mar 09, 2007, 09:36
But then we still get to keep that farmer again for next season, right?

Example...I have Alex Gordon as my farmer hitter from last year. The rule is that you get to keep him for the season you call him up and then again the next year. So that means because I am calling up Alex Gordon for this year, I also get to keep him for 2008, correct?
199ChicagoTRS
      ID: 4110481415
      Fri, Mar 09, 2007, 09:44
yes...that was the intention as long as he had zero major league time last year this would count as his callup year and he would still be eligible for next year.

I guess I have to think about this a little more...because if you draft another farmer this year and he gets called up I do not think you should be able to retain the two hitters for next year...

so maybe we shouldn't allow you to draft another farmer? or we just say you can only have three retainers total...one farmer hitter...one farmer pitcher...one drafted keeper. if you have more than one eligible in a spot you just have to make a choice...

open to debate...

That is the way I would lean is to allow you to draft another farmer...and if you find yourself in the spot of having two eligible farmers that could be retained you need to choose one.

Up to the manager to be smart about drafting...if you already know you are likely to keep someone like Gordon for the next two years you are better off drafting a single A type player so he is possibly ready in two years instead of this year or next.

Yeah, my thinking was that I had to keep Gordon as my hitter farmer, and then call him up when the season starts, thus he would ultimately be replacing one of the guys I drafted.

As I understand it, we are now on a 4 hour clock(starting round 20). Tomorrow, I will be spending a week with my family on a ski vacation in Park City. My cell works up there, but I'm not sure if there's an internet line to the condo.
Bottom line:
I may have only cell phone access until Thursday morning. And I doubt I'll have my cheats with me if I'm on a chairlift or a tram.
Thankfully, we're at a point in the draft where picks aren't critical, but they're all important. I could e-mail someone about 15 names, and when that runs out call me and let me know.

Alright, I drafted Billy Butler as a farmer (already have Bruce). Butler has an outside chance at making the opening day roster. If that happens that would cost him his farmer status and obviously I'd lose him. If he doesn't - then I'll be looking to trade Jay Bruce. Based on last year, I just need to have my farmer situation straightened out by opening day.

And if anyone wants Bruce now (and frankly, their isn't another hitter farmer close to him available) let me know and either trade me a pick or give me a pick of a couple pitchers, I need a few more pitchers...

That's just it, wiggs, I am in a hurry. I've got a ton of other things to do...several other drafts, mid-terms, work, life...I'm tired of constantly checking to see what's going on here only to find we've made 2 picks in a day.

This is exactly why Tony put in the rules that the clock gets shortened at the 20th round. Otherwise this would be a 2 month draft--it has already been going on since Feb. 19. I'm ready to move on.

Updates on Picks:

The draft has 27 rounds, including all farmers etc.

Keeping farmers will eliminate picks on the end of the draft, so keep in mind the following:

Jackhammers does not have a pick in the 26th or 27th rounds. (Zumaya, Upton)

Wiggs does not have a pick in the 27th round. (Billingsley)

sR does not have a pick in the 27th round (Quentin)

PV has all his picks

Darkside does not have a pick in the 26th and 27th rounds (Young, Hughes)

Wolfer does not have a pick in the 27th round (Hamels)

Golfreak has all his picks

ArtfortheHall has all his picks

ChicagoTRS has all his picks

WazzupGuy does not have a pick in the 27th round (Wood)

Barilko6 does not have a pick in the 27th round (Gordon)

Great One does not have a pick in the 27th round (Weaver)

Rob J does not have a pick in the 27th round (D-Mat)

wow missing all of the action...

If the player is in Yahoo then he is just like any other major league player...keep him on your roster but he is not a farmer... (Miller)

For Great One who has drafted two farmer hitters...he needs to either trade one before the end of the draft or at the end of the draft he will need to choose which he is going to actually use in his farmer spot. It is kind of unfair that noone else had a chance to draft the FH but he is also wasting a mid round pick taking two FHs so it balances out.

For players like Gordon and Matsuzaka who were farmers last year but are now in the Yahoo database...if you are going to retain for this year...they will fill your farmer spot for now and you must put them on your roster at the start of the season. You do not get to draft a farmer in their position this year. I considered letting people draft a replacement this year but I do not want the case where next year you may have two/four farmer hitters/pitchers that could be retained.

The clock...it is there for a purpose...it is up to the manager on the clock whether he wants to give a timed out person time to pick...personally I say it is the 20+ round and just pick to keep the draft moving...nothing that happens at this point in the draft is going to make that big of an impact.

Think I covered everything...

Very true Jackhammers...

Make sure everyone reads post 240 so they know when they actually have a draft pick, and when they don't.

Also check post 1 in the draft thread to see if your team needs to draft a Farmer Hitter and/or a farmer pitcher to make sure your roster is complete.

Did i mess up? 26 players on a team +2 farmers

Or do i need one more pick and 2 farmers?
Or need to drop one of my last pick and 2 farmers?

It is a 27 round draft. 25 players plus your keeper from last year, plus your 2 farmers. Since your keeper from last year doesn't need to be drafted, you draft 24 players and 2 farmers.

darkside...RobJ will just have to pick which player he wants to be his farmer (Bruce) and will have an open roster spot to open the season. Hamilton is just a wasted pick.

There is probably a good chance Hamilton will make the Reds opening day roster and in that case as long as Yahoo adds him before the season RobJ can add him and retain his rights.

I mean, I just want to know when you have to officially declare
Farmer hitter (is this right: within 5 days of when they're added to
the database so long as Sosa/Hamilton conceivably arent added
before opening day- unlikely I think but interesting.) I really didn't
even intend on them being possible farmers but if anything it
makes for a weird situation, the washed up ex big leauger trying to
get some credit and the never was #1 draft pick josh hamilton
coming back from his personal problems.

The rule states:
"To qualify for farmer status they cannot be in the Yahoo database on opening day of the season."

So yes I would say at this point Sammy and Hamilton are potential farmers. If neither are in the Yahoo database on opening day you have your pick of who you want to be your farmer...you would have to make that declaration opening day. By rule you should lose all of your draft rights to the players you do not select.

I will likely amend this rule...to something like: "If a player makes the opening day roster whether he is in the Yahoo database or not he is not a farmer but you would retain rights to that player as a regular draft pick once he is added." I just hate relying on Yahoo and do not want people to lose their picks or kind of skirt the system on a bogus farmer like Sosa.

The rules clearly state that each team can only draft 1 farmer. With that in mind, there are two teams that have more than 1 player not in the Yahoo system. As acting commissioner, I am just going to rule that the teams that made the mistake of drafting an extra farmer will just lose the rights to the second player they chose and have their roster entered with an empty slot. When Joey Votto, Josh Hamilton, and Sammy Sosa get added to the Yahoo database, they are open to be selected by ANY manager in the league.

Teams with double farmers:

Art: Curtis Maybin and Joey Votto
(Will not enter Joey Votto) Roster will have one empty slot.

Rob J: Jay Bruce, Josh Hamilton, and Sammy Sosa.
Will not enter Hamilton and Sosa. Roster will have 2 empty slots.

Any thoughts or comments on this decision? (I will not enter the rosters until some discussion/consensus)

Also...

Some of us have farmers who are currently in the Yahoo Database, due to keepers from last year, and recently added players to the database.

You have 5 days into the season to call up these players or they will be open to any manager in the league, as to the Farmer rules posted by ChicagoTRS:

5) Once a player is called up you do need to add the player to your roster within (5 days) or you will lose the rights.

It is not the job of anyone but yourself to watch for your farmers being called up. IF you miss your farmer being called up, or recently added to the database, and the 5 days pass, anyone may claim him away from you. (For noting purposes, I plan to add Alex Gordon as soon as the waiver wire pause expires)

Also, don't claim your farmers during the 2 day waiver waiting time or you will lose your waiver priority on a guy that you already have rights to!

Personally, I agree with 300, which is why I'd posted 294. But, in response to my post, TRS (post 297) suggested waiting till opening day to see if any of the players were added and not forcing the drafters to lose rights to them until that point. I don't think that's an unreasonable stance either.

I'm a rules kinda guy. They're there for a reason and it's fairly clear as far as who qualifies as a farmer and how many we're allowed. So, I think 300 is the most fair way of going about things. That said, if the rest of the league wanted to approach it as TRS suggested I wouldn't be opposed to it. I think it would set a bad precedent if the rules weren't changed, but TRS goes on to say he thinks the rule should be amended. If that's the case, then I'd be fine with waiting till opening day to have art and Rob J lose the rights to those guys.

I understand part of that. I guess my fear is that this would allow any managers to waste late round picks on various farmers, thus prohibiting these players to be picked up as farmers by other managers.

It would be a good defensive technique by disqualify good farmers from being on other teams.

305 is also a concern of mine as I was considering picking up Hamilton as my farmer (but decided not to before Rob J picked him up). It is a special concernt this year, or so it seems, since (as Great One pointed out in post 85) there seem to be so many minor leaguers in the Yahoo database right now. Allowing managers to pick up multiple guys who, at the time of drafting qualify as farmers, reduces the number of worthwhile farmers left for others. But, the argument could be made that the drafter is paying a price in wasted draft picks, etc.

I don't know. It is fairly clear that, as the rules stood at the time of drafting, no manager should be allowed more than 1 farmer, so now it's a matter of do we want to bend the rules because we see a need for a change and may as well make it now when some managers would be adversely affected if we did not change it? Given that I'm not terribly worried about the 3 farmers in question, I don't care. But, it is an issue that should be cleared up for next year.

Personally, I think this would be so much easier if a Farmer is simply defined as never played in a MLB game instead of relying on the Yahoo database which is so arbitrary.

I mean a guy like Evan Longoria should be an awesome farmer for somebody. The guy just cracked AA ball... why the heck is he in the Yahoo database?! For no good reason. And it further dilutes the pool of good talent that really should be eligible in the spirit of this rule.

I guess it would still put a burden on managers who draft a farmer/0 major league player that was already in yahoo as then they would need to have the player fill a roster spot all year.

I don't think they have to have them on their roster, if a guy hasn't played a game he isn't gonna sort to the top of anyone's statistical searches and so they wouldn't pick them up without thinking (this is why the rookie designation could get messy, say some rookie has a hot opening week, he sorts up into the middle fo the stats and you casually pick him up).

So if I go and search out Phillip Hughes, Evan Longoria, Alex Gordon etc - I already know who he is and why I am after him. So common sense would dictate I would just check the Farmer list to see if anyone else had him already for the same reason.

If I was commish I would rather force them to be rostered...it just avoids problems...we have very deep benches in this league anyway. We have had problems in the past with people choosing other players farmers when they are added to the DB...people just do not check.

Well we can table this discussion until next year...but I like the 0 game rule and I think if they are in yahoo they should be rostered...maybe we add one more bench spot but I kind of lean towards leaving the benches as is as they are already very deep.

I like the 0 games. If you want to pick someone already in the database, you just have to keep him on the roster. If you want to pick someone from AA ball, then you don't have to use a roster spot. Fair enough for me.

Question still remains, are we going to alter our rules this year to allow the 2 teams to have extra farmers?

The Politics League has thresholds that farmers must reach before they must either be added or lost.
Although I think they're too high(300 career at bats, 125 career innings, it does allow for some MLB history before either adding or losing. Food for thought for next year. Relying on the Yahoo database sucks.

I really fine with whatever happens with teams that have multiply farm players, but I guess I don't see the big deal.
I disagree with Great One that any team should have to declare which farmer is their farmer by opening day, I believe we both have declared who are farmers are and we should have to declare in draft. I am not sure how many current farm players will be added to the yahoo database before opening day and if my farmer is added by opening day, I can't switch farmers, just because I drafted another player that could be considered a farmer. I am not expecting any different treatment because I drafted another player that is considered a farmer. I took a gamble, hoping he will make it this year and if he doesn't I wasted a roster spot and draft pick.

I think then, that the question is whether we are allowed to draft more than one farmer eligible player, as you did. I can see it interpreted either way (than you can and that you cannot). If you are allowed to, that could severely reduce the number of 'quality' farmers available to others (but that just means we'd have to spend higher picks...).

The most important rules regard this, IMO, are (from post 1):
• Farmer = player not in the Yahoo! Database at the start of the season and must qualify as a rookie (minimal major league experience)
• Drafted in any round of the draft
• Each team is allowed one farmer pitcher and one farmer hitter

Honestly, to me, I read that as we can only draft one.

But, from post two, the talk about opening day could lead to a different interpretation:
3) To qualify for farmer status they cannot be in the Yahoo database on opening day of the season. *I understand this puts an extra burden on the managers and there is a chance you will draft a player with the intention of him being a farmer only to have that player make the opening day roster...in this case the player will lose farmer status and you can keep the player but not as a farmer...in this case I will allow you to choose a replacement farmer*

As I said, I think the intent is for you to only draft one farmer, but that's my interpretation.
325ChicagoTRS
      ID: 4110481415
      Tue, Mar 20, 2007, 17:04
Well I can clarify the intent...

#1 Because of this rule: "Farmer = player not in the Yahoo! Database at the start of the season and must qualify as a rookie (minimal major league experience)" - Sosa cannot be a farmer whether he is added to Yahoo or not. When I was commish I would allow the team that drafted him to retain rights to him even if he is not in the Yahoo database at the start of the season as long as they leave an open roster spot for him. (I made a similar decision with Clemens last year or the year before when his status was unknown). Hamilton is a different story...if he opens the season in the minors he is clearly a farmer and the person who drafted him would need to make a choice of which farmer to keep.

As far as drafting multiple farmers...I simply did not consider this at all. I still think it is a bad decision to do this as I think it hurts the team doing this more than it hurts other teams. The expense of wasting draft picks should far out weigh a couple farmers no longer being available. So I would lean towards allowing teams to draft multiple farmers if they want. I do not really see it as a big detriment to the rest of the league as there are litterally 100s of top prospects to choose from and we only choose 24 + a few more if people make multiple farmer picks.

I will revise these rules for next year to try and clear up things. Hopefully I will be in a better position to reassume the commissioner duties.

It works for me. I hardly think that the guys in question are going to set this league on fire this year or the next. I do like the Zero games played thought for farmers for next year.

Check your rosters on Yahoo to see if I made any mistakes. Also, remember, you have 5 days into the 2007 season to add farmers that are already in the Yahoo database, and it is up to each manager to check their own farmer status. After the 5 days, you lose all rights to those players.

Chicago, I would love that spreadsheet, send it over, and I will check off keepers and farmers throughout the season so we have a definitive list of who is available to be kept for 2008.

Dice K was drafted as a farmer last year...so that is why he is Rob Js farmer.

Oh that's right...I forgot. We already had this discussion w/ Gordon (IIRC). Those are really good farmers to have since they'll get 2 full years. I hope Hughes gets called up early so I can get a good bit of this year with him.

Yeah...it will be nice to have Gordon for 2 full years. Provided he does well!

Remember, do a CTRL-F in the draft thread before claiming anyone that seems too good to be true! (D-Mat, Alex Gordon, etc.)

Maybin is going to be very good someday. I watched him a couple times during Spring Training this year and was wowed. If I had needed another hitting farmer this year, Maybin would have went in the 18th round or so.

Andrew Miller is in the Yahoo database. In fact, he may have been in when we were drafting. He got called up and pitched 10 innings last year.

Either way, he's not eligible as a farmer.

FARMER UPDATE:

Wiggs has lost farmer rights on Andy LaRoche who has been in the Yahoo database since the first game of the season. The 5 day waiting period has passed, meaning he may be claimed by anyone.

If anyone else sees a farmer claim lapse, post it here so that we have it documented for next season.

he is in the database, but he didnt make the team. The whole in the database idea is stupid. Why would i ever look for a guy who isnt even on a major league roster. I obviously dont have the time for the league if it means checking every day for players not even on a team.

Well instead of just typing out a single line,

"This is stupid",

I think it would be more constructive to talk about the process and your desire to change it, like you did in your second post.

I definitely agree that our farmer system is flawed and we talked about that during the preseason. I would love to hear alternative suggestions, understanding that ChicagoTRS is still pretty much the Commish here.

what was stupid is that there was no warning at all that he was even in the database. I never looked for him, knowing he didnt make a major league team. then there is a post saying i lost him because i didnt pick him up.

LaRoche was added to the database on Feb 13, so in actuality you drafted a player who wasn't eligible to be a farmer and it must have been overlooked by everyone else.

We loosely discussed changing the ruling from "in the yahoo database" to MLB experience which I think is pretty good. Should we vote to see if that should be official?

Not now. It would have completely changed who I drafted as a farmer. Or, if we did vote, it would need to be understood that the rules wouldn't change until next year.

so yahoo throws a random guy into the data base, but the player never plays an inning you lose the rights to that guy. that makes no sense.

Wiggs, I think that is a consideration that should have been made at the time you drafted that player. As Darkside pointed out, LaRoche was already in the database when you drafted him, and he slipped past us all. Before you draft a farmer, the first thing you should do is check with Yahoo to see his status.

I agree with Darkside that any rule changes would have to be for 2008, but I agree that a change is needed.

wiggs...did you read post 354? YOU drafted a player as a farmer who wasn't eligible. The only fault that may not lie with you is that someone else didn't double check what you yourself should have checked.

And...I think we agree that the rule needs changed, but we played with it ALL last season, the only thing different is who Yahoo put in the database prior to the start of the season and it seems they had the 'big' name prospects there. Regardless, you should have checked. End of story. If you had a problem w/ the rule that really should have been addressed prior to the start of the season.

it was never a problem before. Yahoo didnt have alex gordon or delmon young or brandon wood added last year, why would they add laroche this year, I didnt look for him because there was no reason to look for a guy who had no shot to make the opening day roster.

Dark side, i dont know what your problem is with me, but you obviously have a problem. Everything i have said in this league you have a comment for it. I play alot of leagues with alot of these guys and we never have a problem. Why do you?

Yeah...I don't know what Yahoo's thought process is with a bunch of these rookie players, it seems so random as to who is included and who isn't. This makes our need for change all that more important.

I like the suggestion of the farmer being anyone who is a qualified rookie of the year candidate, or something along those lines.

I've only taken issue with you twice, wiggs. The first was when you timed out and said how stupid it was that you were skipped, and now because you say it's stupid that the rules are once again being applied to you.

Both times I reacted more harshly than I should, but that's because I perceive your comments to be that of shirking your own responsibility in the matters. Each time you have created the situation (albeit for a kind reason w/ the timeout) and both times you tried to blame someone or something else. It's rubbed me the wrong way. But, that doesn't excuse the lack of respect I've shown and for that I do apologize.

Ok...we need an official ruling here I think...

Some people have emailed me as to other farmers that have had their eligibility expire with the 5 day rule.

These include:

John Danks
Brandon Wood
Andy LaRoche.

According to the rules set up by Chicago last season, all three managers should lose their rights to these players. Do we want to grant mercy here as they players aren't even on rosters?

Thoughts?

You should really use the league thread to discuss this stuff...just happenedo look here today.

I do plan on revising the farmer rules for next year.

Likely...Farmers:
0 major league experience (or some very limited amount TBD)

if the player is in the yahoo db you must roster him (will have to think about a time limit or warning system or something...because I do agree it seems Yahoo randomly adds players and if they are not in the bigs it is hard to recognize when they are added.)

if retained farmers are traded they lose retention status (I do not want managers to be able to trade for a roster full of retainers)

if you you have a retained farmer (like gordon or Dice K this year) that did not play in the bigs last year but is making an opening day roster they still fill your farmer slot this year (cannot draft a farmer). On the second year of retention you can draft another farmer.

The above is the direction I am headed anyway...I am open to suggestions...the farmer thing is just supposed to add a positive element to the league...add some intrigue to the draft...give everyone else something to look at...I think we can come up with a set of rules that works for everyone.

As for the farmers that have been added I would be for granting mercy and allowing people to roster their farmers now. The spirit of the 5 day rule is just to make sure people roster them and they do not sit on the open market for other people to claim.
