Subject: RIBC Eastern League Rationales

Let the rationalization of picks begin at round 3, no more, no less. Four shalt thou not count to begin, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three to begin. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached then posteth thou thy rationale of Round 1 on thy screen... |

1.04 Alex Rodriguez Wanted to trade down and get some players I expect to have big seasons this year like David Wright or Miguel Cabrera later in the first round, but even in a down year A-rod still had great stats for a first round player.
Thought about Jose Reyes as well but with OBP and Slugg categories I wasn't prepared to take him quite this early.

1.02 Alfonso Soriano, OF Chi Cubs
I was really torn between him, Reyes and Ryan Howard. I went back and forth for a while. But when you get down to it, Soriano DID have 40+SB and and Slugging of .500+. There were only something like 4 players who even had 20 SB and a .500+ SLG%. I went for the well rounded individual instead of a category specialist like Reyes or Howard.

1.05 Jose Reyes, SS MYM
I have him ranked #2 in this format, so I was more then happy to get him with the 5th pick. Reyes obviously gives me a huge adventage in the SB category (and saves me from getting a SLG killer like Pierre or Figgins), while also scoring a terrific amount of runs and posting reasonable numbers in the other categories. If he can repeat what he did last year he will give me great value here, and at only 23 years old, he might even get better.

1.03 Johan Santana
Having "won" the third pick in this years AA Eastern League I was excited about the possibility of landing one of my top two ranked players. (1. Pujols, 2. Santana). In most pre-season mocks, including the Rotoguru Winter Mock, Santana had fallen to or past the 1.03 position. Needless to say, I had my fingers crossed for Khahan taking his team in another direction.
Santana is easily the best pitcher in the draft. Leading SP's in all major categories last year and expected to do so again in 07. A stat line close his 2006 campaign would more than satisfy me. (19 Wins, 2.77 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 245 K)

1.08 Chase Utley
Chase Utley is by far the most productive 2B in this years draft. The depth at second base in a 16 team league is very thin, so gaining production out of a thin position was one of my aims for the early rounds. Utley puts up a good balance of speed and power and fits my plan perfectly.

1.11 Lance Berkman
Well, I had no doubt that I wanted a slugger. Someone who could help in 4 offensive categories. I really wanted Ortiz, but as often happens, he was taken one pick ahead of me! Berkman won over Hafner and Texiera because of his position flexibility (1B and OF), a couple of steals, and he's now got some protection in the lineup (Carlos Lee)

as i watched the draft unfold, i started thinking that both Carl Crawford and David Wright would fall to me. it stuns me that they went as late as they did, but, unfortunately for me, not as late as i would have liked. ;o)
for me, Vlad was the best player available at that point. no other reason, really. he gives me 5 tools, and if he can stay healthy, is a steal with the 16th pick of the draft.

i rarely take pitchers early. it goes against most things i believe about fantasy baseball.
that being said, none of the players i was thinking about really jumped out at me for this spot, and a solid SP can be pretty tough to find, so i took the plunge.
i may regret it, but it seemed like the right move at the time.

1.10 David Ortiz
I was debating between Beltran and Ortiz here, and the debate ended when Beltran went one pick earlier. No complaints however. Boston's lineup got even better, so Ortiz should be good for his usual 135-140 RBI's. He absolutely dominates the 4 categories he contributes in, so his position and lack of SB's is acceptable.

1.09 Carlos Beltran
We are bouncing all over the place with rationals here arent we? I was actually a little surprised Beltran fell to me at 1.09. I had him a few places higher than that. I figured I would get David Ortiz for the third time in three years of RIBC but I couldn't pass up the 5 tools that Beltran posseses. This was an easy pick for me.

1.13 David Wright, 3B, NYM I debated between Wright, Guerrero, Ramirez and Teixeira here. Wright is a 5-cat player and that is the type of player you want in round 1 of your draft.
he is the 3rd NYM player selected in the first round. I don't know what this means for them as a real-life team, but I can only hope that they can live up the expectations. as you see I am a Mets fan so everytime I see Wright coming up to the plate I will be cheering even more than usual.
players I never considered here were Crawford (only good in SB, the rest is average), Hafner (being only Util-eligible would have hurt the flexibility of my team) and any starting pitcher (including Santana)

1.15 Travis Hafner, Util, Cle
I adopted a different draft strategy for this year of RIBC AA. Previous years I was pretty consistent with my other drafts...Not so this year, I will discuss this further during my draft recap.
Hafner will be at the top of the heap when it comes to OPS. His runs/rbis are also up there. I seriously thought about Vlad, but I really wanted a younger player whose potential hadn't been reached yet. I see that in Hafner...look for him to challenge Pujols' all-around numbers and hopefully play some games at first so that i have a little bit more flexibility when playing him.

2.04 Jason Bay, OF, PIT another player that is above average in all 5 categories. I hope he moves up in the batting order this season, so he should be even more productive for his age.
other players considered here were Holliday and Sizemore and the previously picked Teixeira.
with 2 solid hitters to begin my draft with, I can now concentrate on specific needs that I think will not be available in the mid or late rounds of the draft.

2.07 Bobby Abreu, OF, NYY
I debated between Abreu or a speedster SS here. (Rollins, Furcal or Ramirez were my other targets.) I knew none of the 4 would make it back to me, so my choice was final. In the end I took Abreu for his 5 category contributions. All of the SS had mediocre RBI totals and only decent OBP. Abreu, while not filling a weak position, is superior in all 5 categories. For mid-round 2, I'm not quite willing to make category sacrifices just yet.

Another easy pick here. I had a few players in my head for this pick but they were all taken, Sizemore being the best of them, despite already taking an OF. Another 5-tool player with room to improve. His ceiling is unknown yet, and he could become even better if moved down in the lineup.

1.14 Carl Crawford
Was really surprised when he fell this far but wasn't complaining. Good young player on a young team that both will improve I think (and hope) I also like that fact that I read that he wanted to be the number one player picked in fantasy drafts.
My queue also had Wright and Vlad on it. Would of been happy with either one but happiest with Crawford.

2.09 Miguel Tejada
Again, my early strategy puts a heavy emphasis on position scarcity, so I was fine with taking Tejada here. I really wanted sizemore, but he was taken one pick ahead of me.
Through the first 2 picks I have a middle infield capable of 50-60 HRs and 200+ RBI, so even though I don't have a 40 HR guy the power in the middle infield will help carry my offensive numbers.

I was torn here with who I wanted to pick. It was a little early yet for a SP but I always seem to wait to long to grab a SP and I end up without a really strong arm to backbone my rotation. I took Webb because he is pretty strong across the board and I look for him to continue what he was able to do last year.

2.12 Garrett Atkins, 3B Col
I really didn't want to take a 3B here because the position is absolutly loaded, but with Sizemore and Holliday gone just before me (and no pitcher giving me any value here) Atkins was too good to pass up. He is young, he plays in Coors and he is a terrific hitter. No reason to beleive he won't (at least) repeat last year.

2.14 Jimmy Rollins
Jimmy really hadn't crossed my mind for my second round pick at first but as my pick drew closer and closer Rollins made more and more sense. Many of the big sluggers were flying off the board in the first and second rounds and once it was my turn none had slid down to me.
Rollins is a guy who can give me 125+ runs, close to 40 SB's, 75 RBI, and 25 HR's (a big SLG helper).

I had sent a que to Wiggs for this pick. That que included as my #1 pick, Grady Sizemore. Between sizemore and Lee were Jimmy Rollins and Vernon Wells. Oh well. I still like Carlos here. He had a .500+slg last year and 19 SB. I expect his SB total to be more the 10-15 range in Texas, but I also expect his slugging and OBP to be up.

I always feel people over-estimate how important getting a huge 1b or OF HR hitter, when there are plenty of 30-hr guys around later. Here again I go for a player who can help me out in a position many teams don't get enough from. The best catcher available in this years draft.
I also think he'll improve on his power a bit since he's still very young.

It's was obvious that the closers run was gonna happen somewhere between this pick and my next one (4.12), so I decided I might as well start it rather then wait at the end of the line. K-Rod himself needs no introduction, #1 closer in the game, last year's numbers will do just fine (47 saves, 98 K's, great averages).

Nathan was my one-man queue before Nerf grabbed him. I looked around at some other options, but ultimately Ryan was arguably just as good as Nathan (and K-rod) last year. Knowing that taking Ryan was assure the start of a closer run (even though it likely would've happened anyway) I decided to grab a great closer rather then wait for a good one next round.
In past years, I've often waited for my RP's and regretted it. Saves was a category I punted once and drafted weakly for the next year. This year, I've finally got a great anchor.

I usually dont take closers early in drafts, as there are usually saves to be found in the later rounds or in free agency. But in this league it has been very difficult to find saves outside of the draft so I jumped on Nathan here, who I had rated as the best closer.

Most of the rankings I've seen have put Roberts at the top 3 at this position. After drafting Jeter high I decided to go with a "strong up the middle" strategy with this pick. Not something I normally do, but I've had to let this draft come to me because of some late picks. I'd like to see the power numbers of a few years ago come back for him, but I'll be satisfied with solid OBP and speed. May get a chance to drive in some more runs with a stolen base threat batting 9th or possibly leading off in front of him in some cases.

With apologies to youngroman, Jim Thome was the best hitter left in the draft, even when I took Joe Nathan. His percentages are fantastic and he's been doing it for years, with only one injury blemish in his recent past. His only downside is his DH standing. Considering his immense production, I dont mind putting him at UT, and with any luck Konerko goes down for a few days and he gets qualified at 1B.

With Thome being snatched away right before my pick, I was left without the slugger I was aiming for.
Then it was Sheets or a closer. Sheets has been labeled "injury prone" from his last two seasons going on the DL, but before those two seasons he pitched 210+ innings for three straight years with Cy-Young caliber stuff. I'm not too worried about his health and looking forward to a dominating performance from Sheets.

I considered five players here. Sheffield, Thome, Smoltz, Sheets and Schilling. I was hopeful that I could get two of these 5 with my 4th and 5th rounders, and decided that the pitchers had a better chance of sticking around. Between Thome and Sheffield, I decided on Sheff mostly because of position ability. I expect similar RBI, Runs and OBP's. Sheffield should grab around 10 SB's, which is ten more then Thome will get. ;) The only plus for Thome was the expected 50 extra points in SLG, but that doesn't quite make up for the loss in OF/1B availability, especially given my already strong SLG.

5.09 John Smoltz, SP ATL
Smoltz, Webb, Oswalt. Take your pick on who was the best pitcher in the NL in 2006. Why was Smoltz still available when the other two were long gone? Age and injury history are probably the two biggest factors, but the truth is that only Brandon Webb has pitched more innings than Smoltz in the last two seasons. Smoltz is durable, dependable, can get wins and K's... what else do you need as a staff ace?

5.10 Curt Schilling, SP, Bos
I was hoping to get Smoltz here, but Schilling will do. When I picked Sheffield I was hoping one of my 3 top SP's would stick around for this pick, and I got one. His ERA might be a bit higher then Smoltz, and both of their WHIP's will likely be beat by Sheets, but Curt should be right there in K's and has a better chance at more Wins in all likelyhood. A fair tradeoff.

5.11 John Lackey, SP, LA
Ok, after picking four sluggers, I wanted a top 10 pitcher. I was actually hoping someone like John Smoltz would fall to me, but alas was taken 2 spots earlier. Lackey is one of those guys who's highly underrated. He gets wins, strikes lot of guys out, plays on a pretty good team, in a weaker division. He's also younger, so he's got a shot at having a break out year, as opposed to some of the older pitchers.

5.13 Johnny Damon, OF, NYY I guess he still leads off for the Yankees all year. if you look at the power bats behind him, it should be an easy tasks to get loads of runs. add his amount of stolen bases and that he is an everyday player that very rarely gets a day off you get a lot more than a late 5th rounder.
other players considered here were John Smoltz and Troy Glaus because of his SS eligibility. Glaus fills a weak position (SS), Damon fills a weak stat (SB). I took the stat and hope that I can get 2 servicable SS in later rounds that can give me more SBs than Glaus, which is usually an easy task to achieve. still waiting for a SP this year, but there is no one standing out at this point. it will be interesting how my strategy works out through the draft when I see that a lot of you are taking their SPs earlier than I would have.

5.05 Jeremy Bonderman, SP DET Bonderman was the guy I planned to take with this pick all the way. I have a very good feeling about him this year, and I beleive he has the stuff to become a true ace (both in real life and fantasy). He outpitched his stats last year and these things tend to go both ways, so hpoefully this season the good luck will be on his side. I'm hoping for at least 15 wins and 200 K's with ERA in the low 3's.

5.14 Ryan Zimmerman
Like the pop, the handful of steals and the potential. Maybe a bit too early but I'm sure he wouldn't make it back to me. Also considered Rios, Damon and Lopez who were my queue.

6.03 Alex Rios
Other then misnaming him I like this pick. He was on track for a career year until the injury killed him. With the offense around him I feel like he's ready to do finish what he started.

6.04 Hideki Matsui, OF, NYY how the hell can I take 4 NY players in the first 6 rounds? wait, because they are worth it. Matsui may be the last player available that can reach 100/100 this season. he played all games in the 2003-2005 seasons and I hope that trend continues this year.
with a solid core at 1B, 3B, and 3 OF I can now start thinking about filling my voids at C/2B/SS and SP/RP. lets see who gets overlooked.

6.07 Felipe Lopez, SS, Wash
Helton, Harden and Rolen were my other options, but ultimately I decided on the SB's from a middle-infield slot. I'm hoping for a repeat of the 40 SB's he put up last year, especially on a Washington team that likely will let him run at will to generate offense.

6.08 Nick Johnson, 1B WAS
Johnson is one of those players who has more value in this format than that of a standard 5x5. His OPS is very high despite not hitting alot of HR and his OBP is one the best out there. His only knock would be his injury history so I am hoping for a full season from him.

6.06 Jason Schmidt, P, LAD
When I looked at SP, I wanted low WHIP and ERA, potential for 15+ wins and lots of K's. Schmidt fit the bill, and I think he's moving to a better offense and the same division should ease the transition while providing a few more W's.
