I'm actually looking to trade A-rod and my 3rd round pick to receive someone elses first round pick and second round pick, but I was looking for someone a little further down to trade with.

Not sure the draft will come back to me, but I work midnights and heading to bed now. I'll be back at around 10pm Eastern. So if my pick comes up feel free to pass me and I'll pick when I wake up.

If it doesn't come to me just ignore this.

Hey guys, just one other thought, might be good to use our TEAM names as opposed to our rotoguru screen name. I usually go by Andyd, but I've been posting under Roll of Dice-K just so that people know what team is mine.

Case in point, I couldnt figure out who Rheo was when he posted the other day. Just a thought, might keep things running smoother.

R9 -

normally i agree, but, to the best of my knowledge, there has not been one peep from jackhammers since he said "i'm in!"

i'm a firm believer that when you get involved in a league, you need to pay attention.

R9 I agree with you completely, but we can't ignore the fact that at this pace this draft will end somewhere in july... apperantly there are a lot of guys here with limited access, even during the day, so we will have to start helping each other by using ques, because this is deffenetly not going the right way.

I tend to agree but the problem is rules are rules and they've been set out. Last thing you want is to bend it for someone and then later a similar situation will come up and people may wonder why they aren't entitled to the same bending of the rules.

Yeah, I vote letting him have more time. I think tonite or whenever Khahan reads this, he should make a ruling on what we do.

I know its super frustrating when people dont pick within a certain amount of time, but we really shouldnt worry that we wont finish the draft. I say we wait, let the league commish make a ruling on Jackhammers and the rest of the league.

Also, I dont see any posts by YoungRomans (next team) where he's chomping at the bit to go.

my bigger concern now is Jackhammer.

skipping someone in the first two rounds could kill them for the season.

that being said, there was plenty of advance notice that the draft began officially today, and it's been ongoing now since Sunday, so he had to have some idea, no?

If he times out, he times out. People can slow down their picks so the draft doesn't get too far ahead of Jackhammers. But we did have plenty of notice.

However, in the future, if somebody times out, please do a place holder post for them. Don't just note it in your own. I can edit the place holder post and get his pick in when he makes it.

Jackahammer, please email me your pick.

It sucks that someone had to get skipped, especially in the first round. Yet, there's still plenty of second round guys who are worth of a late first round pick.

I just dont want someone to drop out or not try because they didnt get the first round guy they wanted.

can we try to hold the rationales in order? I would suggest the following procedure if you are up:
1st post your rationale. this way the next manager sees that he will be up soon. if a rationale is missing simply post a placeholder for each missing rationale up to yours, so that a moderator can replace this posts later.
after that simply post your pick

if you missed out on one of your rationales, post it here in the discussion thread and a moderator can move it over.

Thanks for your attention

2.14 Jimmy Rollins

Jimmy really hadn't crossed my mind for my second round pick at first but as my pick drew closer and closer Rollins made more and more sense. Many of the big sluggers were flying off the board in the first and second rounds and once it was my turn none had slid down to me.

Rollins is a guy who can give me 125+ runs, close to 40 SB's, 75 RBI, and 25 HR's (a big SLG helper).

2.02 Manny Ramirez, OF, Bos

The first time I've ever drafted him in fantasy baseball. I hate the Red Sox and he's always come across as a primadonna.

I had a feeling that Tree wouldn't draft two OF's with his picks, and I would have preferred Vlad to come back to me. The only other person I had on my radar was Teix but with his slow season last year, I didn't want to risk it.

Manny is an injury risk, but look at his numbers in 75% of the season and it stacks up to most stud OFers. I think he's a steal especially with the addition of Drew to the lineup (he finally has proctection). Here's hoping his hammy/groin/knee hold up ;)

The ends really have it much easier. They only have to check in half as much. Oh well, no rush, just frustrating when you keep checking back in and finding that we havent progressed.

Never a big deal to me if you have a slow day like yesterday. It's going to happen where the chips fall badly and it's slow. One day isn't going to hurt. If it happens a couple of more times then yeah we should worry but for now it's no biggie.

Now of course these are just my opinions and are probably in the minority :)

3.16 Brian McCann - this was a combination of position scarcity, and just getting one of the better players out there.

there are three catchers that i think are worth drafting even remotely early, and then, after that, the level drops significantly. McCann is one of those three, and i wanted him on my roster.

4.01 Huston Street - wanted a closer. it's that simple. a number of closers went before him, and i think he was the best still available.

still, it might have been a bit early for Street, but i didn't want to risk going another 30 or so picks before i got a chance to get a closer.

Tree,

I do apologize. Life has taken over lately and kept me from the computer world. I manage a sports bar, College Hoops has really kicked in lately and I deal with all of the Live entertainment also, and weve just had alot of great stuff happening recently. Longer hours for me, crazy hectic environment. Slow dial up in the back office where I try to check in when I can. I also work some weekends with a ski tour company, so I'm away at the mountains but those have now ended for the season. I'm involved in several drafts but this one has suffered the worst. I apologize to you and everyone here. Its not my normal MO to hold things up so much. I'll email you my cell phone # since you seem to be around alot and do my best to check in more.

the other drafts shouldn't concern us, we should be concerned about finishing this by opening day, witch is far from being a sure thing at this pace.

maybe it's time to push the panic button and cut the clock to 2 or 3 hours, that way people will be forced to send ques.

173Tree

1. when i emailed Astade before his (now duplicated) pick to let him know he was up, i told him to stick around because i was going to pick immediately after he did.

2. i made my picks in good faith. i'm not trying to be a jerk, but it's not my fault if someone else made a duplicate pick.

if i had noticed it, i would have held back. but i didn't, i made my picks, and if i were to lose those picks because of someone else's error, that would not sit well with me.

Tree - I guess it is no biggie. I simply don't know how Khahan sees the situation. If Astade gets his pick before yours he could sneak one of your picks away. thats why I thought it would be more safe for you to remove your 2 picks.

I guess the ruling will be that Tree's picks are valid, Astade gets the next 2 picks (9.15, 10.02) and we continue the whole thing.

six picks in 8.5 hours. and 4 of those came from queues that were left.

this may be the longest, most frustrating draft i have ever been involved in. leaving queues works - we've seen it. or, checking in every so often - that works too.

i hate to be all b!tchy about this, but a draft simply shouldn't take this long - and when it does, it drags all the fun completely out of it.

unless i'm mistaken:

1. Wiggs' pick is 11.06 not 12.06.

2. YouPlayToWinTheGame - unless there was a trade made that i missed, you're not up. generally speaking, 7 comes after 6. 8 does NOT come after 6.

Wow, lets F' this thing up a little more. The pick is for round 11. So it should be changed to 11.06 like Tree said.

Also, YouPlayToWinTheGame only gave Philly 3 hours (not 4) before picking ahead of him. It says wiggs posted at 17:35 and YouPlay posted at 20:35. So someone will have to delete his post and let Philly pick.

As I was doing that, Philflyboy made his pick.
I then added youplay's pick back in as it was posted.

Eric Chavez in round 12. How the mighty have fallen... Last I heard his injuries would be 'bothering him all year', but it wouldn't surprise me to see him play strongly through them. Could be a big steal.

i wanted Drew, but more so, i wanted a SS i felt comfortable with. it may come back to bite me in the ass, but there are few quality SS out there to begin with, much less at this point in the draft.

as for Chavez, i normally don't take players who have scary injury history. but, at this point, the risk was worth it.

I ran the numbers very quickly. In the first 6 days of the draft we made 84 picks, excluding the 10 that were made before the official draft start. In the succeeding 9 days we have made 93 picks. Thats about 10 picks per day, and if we were to continue at the latter pace it would take approximately 21 days to complete the draft. And for those keeping score, that's 4 days into the regular season.

Just to throw out an idea. I say we cut the clock down to 2 hours for anyone who has ever timed out. That way a person can have one 4 hour timeout before its cut down. Seems to me like there only a few people keeping this up each time around and the rest are being very dilligent with their picks.

Oh and Tree, Mikel will be up shortly if IHatePhilly doesnt pick soon.

Just to give people an idea, here is today's time between picks...

1. 7 minutes
2. 1 hour 11 minutes
3. 4+ hours (TIMED OUT)
4. 45 minutes
5. 4 minutes
6. 16 minutes
7. 4 minutes
8. 4+ hours (about to TIME OUT)

So, there is a good portion of people in this league that are spending a lot of time waiting for the few who wont take the time to either check in more often or send someone a queue.

Roll - you hit the nail on the head. We're reducing the clock for those who have timed out.

Anybody who has timed out one time is down to 3 hours. If you've timed out more than 1 time, you're down to 2 hours.

This means:

Jackhammers: 11 is down to 2 hours
rheo: 1 is down to 3 hours
achess: 1 is down to 3 hours
I hate philadellphia: 1 is down to 3 hours
Astade: 1 is down to 3 hours

Many others have been borderline or even taking 3 to 3 1/2 hours consistently. We'll deal with them if/when we have to.

Guys, I know people are at work during the day and don't have access. I'm one of them. I'm not allowed to check in during the day. When I get at 5 or 5:30 I have 3 kids taking up my time until around 8. I get about 15 mins before leaving for work in the morning and 2-3 hours after my kids are bed at night to check in. Out of my maybe 3hours and 15 mins during the day, I like to try to spend some of that with my wife. Point is, if I can do this w/out holding things up, so can you.

That is all you need to do, leave a que. Everybody's email is listed in the sign up thread.

...
now, I need a few minutes to do some research as my que has been emptied and I'll make my pick. :)

Then quit and stop crying about the draft Tree. You knew this was a possibility when you signed up for a slow draft.

I appreciate what you've (and others) have done to try and keep this going but it's getting a bit old.

I've done lots of these drafts here and there's always a bunch of worrying about getting it done in time and it always does get done in time. Yeah it usually involves cutting the clock but it's for everyone not just certain people.

You can't have different sets of rules for different for people. It's just wrong.

Not trying to stir up sh*t or offend anyone but this is how I feel.

For the record I'd like to know which round I timed out on. I looked over the list and don't see any.

You knew this was a possibility when you signed up for a slow draft.

actually, no i didn't. in all my years of playing fantasy sports - baseball, basketball, and football - i've never been in a draft this slow.

it's not just about finishing in time. it's about having a draft that is remotely enjoyable. drafts should be fun - not frustrating, while waiting for someone to take 4 hours to make a pick.

Tree I was completely on your side until you took a swipe at me. I have been here every night waiting for picks and the one night I go out for a few hours the draft goes through 4 picks in a half hour and I'm supposed to expect that I am all of a sudden up?

I made my picks, but in no way do I think its fair that I am penalized because others have been slow in the past. The fact that the draft has gone slow is more of the reason that I was not more apt to send out a queue. I don't see how a draft that has spent about 3 hours a pick should all of a sudden be expected to go through 4 in 30 minutes. I too have serious doubts as to weather we will get through this draft and am sorry that we did not go through kafenatid, but don't point fingers at me when I've been here all along and had one night where I miss for a few hours because I wasn't near being up.

I'm gonna say this - this draft is my only fantasy league this year, so I really hope that people here don't do harsh things like droping out and making the league close... just think of the 15 other guys before you do something like that. we all made a commitment here, we all could have signed for other RIBC league but chose this one. think about it.

Khahan - just my two cents.

let's drop the clock to 3 hours for everyone for the rest of the week, from 8 am to 11 pm eastern

on the weekend, let's raise it back up to four, then on monday go back down to three.

and from this moment on, anyone who gets skipped because they didn't leave a queue, drops down to 2 hours.

come the middle of next week, if we're not on round 20 or nearing the end, drop the clock to two hours, and we go go go.

I made my picks, but in no way do I think its fair that I am penalized because others have been slow in the past.

The past is all we have to go on right now. The idea of the shorter clock is to help speed the draft as a whole up. Hence the gentle kick in the pants to the people who have slowed it down (and a bit harsher kick to those who dragged it down).

The fact that the draft has gone slow is more of the reason that I was not more apt to send out a queue.

I don't see how the first should affect the second. Obviously #2 DOES affect #1. So maybe with the shorter time frames, you'll be more apt to send out a que. Hence, the gentle kick in the pants.

As for not using Kafenatid, I"m a big supporter of Fred's site. But I did not see where we could view others drafts this year (if I remember correctly, there used to be links right on my front page w/ other baseball drafts). I felt the ribc leagues were more of a community event and wanted our draft to be shared by the community. If I was wrong about viewing other drafts, I apologize.
(which as I write this, I see a link now for exactly what I had been looking for, so I'm sorry I missed that when it was set up time)

However, I don't see how kafenatid would have sped things up. People don't check in, they don't check in. They had 4 hours either way. The clock doesn't go any faster on kafenatid than it does on rotoguru.

You still need to leave a que on kafenatid to help speed things up.

Over the years I have don a ton of slow drafts on these boards. And this is, by far, the slowest of them all. There is absolutely no reason a draft that starts in February should be off schedule to finish by April.

Its not just the people who have timed out that are slowing it down. These are the times for the first few days of the clock, starting Wednesday at 8am and ending Friday at 11pm.
Dror: 19 mins (2 picks average 9.5 mins)
Wiggs: 1 hour 37 mins (2 picks average 48.5 mins)
Phillyflyboy: 1 hour 47 mins (2 picks average 53.5 mins)
Youplaytowin: 1 hour 10 mins (2 picks ave 35 mins)
Nerfherders: 7 hours 11 mins (2 picks average 3 hours 35mins)
R9: 3 hours 5 mins (2 picks 1 hour 32 mins average)
Roll of dice k: 1 hour 13 mins (3 picks 31 mins average)
Jackhammers: 8 hour 14 mins (3 picks 2 hours 35 mins average 2 time outs, 1 in 14 mins)
Young Romans: 6 hour 23 mins (3 picks 2 hour 7 mins average)
Rheo: 7 hours 52 mins (4 picks 1 hour 58 mins per pick
Astade: 32 mins per pick (4 pick 8 mins average, yes he's near a book end)
Tree: 1 hour 35 mins (4 picks 23 mins average per pick).

That is counting clock time only from the official start of the draft through 3 days. Those trends pretty much continue. Dror and myself have been using que's from early on. Jackhammers and achess started using que's part way through and R9 and Mikel used a que late in the draft when they needed it.

Use que's, they work.

I missed some people: I hate philadelphia: 14 mins for 2 picks.
Mikel: 1 hour 17 for 2 picks.

Unfortunately, Ihatephilly, a time out is a time out. The simple use of a que would have avoided it. Its the guideline we go by.

But actually, I agree with Tree. 3 hours clock for everybody. 4 hours on weekends. Use que's and its not an issue. No one person is penalized. We all just need to make a concerted effort to speed things up.

I'd first off like to apologize to Tree for my comments from last night. They definitely could and should of came off a lot better then they did.

I think we all agree that we do this for fun. Where you get annoyed over the pace of the draft, I get annoyed with the constant complaining. The point I was trying to make (and upon looking it over again this morning poorly) is that if it's bugging you so much then quit. Now I don't really want anyone to quit but if it's causing so much worry and taking away the fun then is it really worth sticking around for?

I know personally I had a disagreement with someone in one of these league and it got a bit nasty and was taking the fun away for me. Rather then stick around I decided to back out since it wasn't worth putting up with. You'd mentioned 2 or 3 times thoughts about quitting and I got tired of hearing it honestly. Like I said, I wish I had been a bit less harsh in my remarks but unfortunately it didn't come out that way.

Generally I like to think I've done a good job of keeping up with things. A couple of times I've used up some time but that's going to happen. Everyone has reasons why this might happen (work, kids, significant others, in my case sleep). In no way should the clock be abused but in the case of Philly, no way should he be singled out for it happening once.

It's good that we've had some solid discussion last night/today on this because I believe talk is always good. Wish it hadn't gotten personal and again I apologize but at least some good has come out of it.

Now with that being said I'm going to send a queue off to Dice-K since I'm off to visit my kids and won't be back until 12:30 or so.

i own my 13.16 pick, but 14.01 is Khahan's, due to the Uggla-Drew trade.

Re: 279

Ya got that right Tree. I'm getting a big Q ready for the weekend. Maryland has advanced and St. Patty's day on Saturday to boot. No question it's a Terp crowd here but but Virginia Commenwealth stole the show today. They were actually chanting V-C-U tonight for the last 10 minutes of their upset over Duke.

I'm really sorry about my absence this year guys, I just took over this place in the Fall. I'm in several drafts which were were all cruising along in February and then things just exploded in March. i've been doing RIBC for a few years but I may have to duck out next year just for the sanity of the rest of the managers. i've been the cause of of alot of headaches and set the tone for this slow draft. On a side note, Tree has taken some grief in this thread, but I believe he has been a Gentleman throughout, and has done his best to help in whatever way to keep things moving. So if you come through Baltimore Tree, you have a bar tab, and I'll put the prettiest, friendliest girl on the staff at your table. I owe the rest of you one also.

I'll do my best to keep up with rest of it. I do have off through the daylight tomorrow, but then all hell breaks loose and I'll see you Sunday.

LOL. thanks JH. i think you started slow, then started sending queues, and that made things ok.

if it were me, i'd hate it - i hate drafting by queue, because it eliminates the twisting and turning nature of a draft.

i do appreciate your words. i am definitely pushy come draft time, but i believe that if someone knows they're not going to be around, they have a responsibility to leave queues and such - as a simple common courtesy. and for the most part (with noted exceptions - please, no one see this as a personal shot), no one is being "surprised" by their pick coming up. in a draft that's going to take upwards of a month to finish, there are no surprises.

on a side note. my brother lives in Baltimore. i haven't been down to see him in a couple years, and he's been putting the full court press on my in recent months, so sometime between now and the end of summer, expect me to take you up on your offer... ;o)

now, what beers do you have on draught? lol

The big question is why didn't Duke play for the last shot. Not to take anything from VCU but Duke had the ball with 20 seconds or so and scored. I know the shot was there but they left them too much time. Not sure if Coach K has said anything on it (just woke up) but the ending just left me shaking my head.

I'll make an emergency que and if anything happens again I'll find a comp to send it out.

3.04 Jake Peavy, SP SD I tend to draft my SP from the
National League if I can help it because pitchers in that league have
an advantage of not facing the DH. I happen to think Peavy is the
best pitcher in the NL although last year was an off year for him.
I'm looking for a guy who in the past has shown an ability to keep
his ERA below 3 with a low WHIP and great K/9. Even if he has the
down year he had last year, he still gives me 200k's without killing
my periphials.

4.13 Adam Dunn, OF CIN Consistently puts up 40 HRs
and while his AVG is terrible, his OBP is usually respectable. I
usually don't draft Dunn, but in other RIBC leagues he is going in
the 2nd and 3rd tounds, so I thought grabbing him here in the late
4th was a good pick.

speaking about rationales. it seems our thread stalled, so I put all of my missing ones here.

7.13 Eric Gagne, RP, TEX
before his injury, he was on top of the closer-tier. now that he seems finally healthy again I expect nothing more than what he accomplished before:
ERA below 3.00
WHIP around 1.00
around 1.3 K/IP
usual saves and wins for a closer.

maybe I should stop dreaming because that seems like a 3rd-round talent in the late 7th round. we will see how long he can stay healthy and how he really performs. then we can discuss if this was a steal or not.

8.04 Tadahito Iguchi, 2B, CWS
2B is getting really thin, with 3 of them gone within the last 5 picks I felt that I need to take one now or get some crap later.
Iguchi seems to bat 2nd on a White Sox team that is known for their scoring. he gives me some SB's too, so I hope he lives up to my expectations.
I also thought about C, SS and SP, but thought that the greatest dropoff is at 2B. only 3 catchers were gone and the next few ones are nearly equal. lots of SS are already gone, so I thought that I can wait another round or two. my best guess is that 2 more SS go off the board until it is my time to pick again.
looking at available SP, you can build an excellent 5-man-rotation, so I deferred once again.
321youngroman
      ID: 3751268
      Sat, Mar 17, 2007, 06:56
9.13 Randy Johnson, SP, ARI
I thought it was finally time to get my first starting pitcher. I think that he can get back to his old self, now that he is back in Arizona. I am not expecting his spectacular stats from his previous season with the D'Backs but something that lies between them and last year. only time will tell if that can get true.

other picks I thought here: a shortstop or a catcher. since 2 of the next 3 managers have already a catcher I can wait at least 1 more round. Shortstop is a bit different, there are only a few valuable ones left and the next 3 teams have no shortstop until now. I take the risk, because I think the SS that I want (Drew) will be there next round. the other SP that I considered was Erik Bedard. He went with the next pick, so I was not lucky with the decision for this pick because otherwise RJ could have been available with my next pick.
322youngroman

      Sat, Mar 17, 2007, 07:00
10.04 Rich Hill, SP, CHC
I initially thought about taking a catcher or shortstop here, but I couldn't get it done. my hole at SP was too big and the pitchers with good K/IP ratios are getting thin, so I'd better take one of them earlier than later.
Rich Hill did an outstanding job last year after the ASB: ERA 2.93, WHIP 1.05, 79 Ks, 6 wins in 80 IP. I don't expect that he repeats this but an ERA around 3.5 and WHIP at 1.15 with 1K/IP are not out of reach. those stats are similiar to that of Randy Johnson whom I picked one round earlier.

of the next 24 picks only 2 players have no SS, so I hope once again that I can still get the player I intended to pick since the start of the draft. I don't think that this applies to my catcher too, but it would have been too early to get him now. lets see if one or both of my guys are still around when I'm up again.
323youngroman

11.13 Jhonny Peralta, SS, CLE
we need at least one shortstop, right? thats the whole reason why I took one with this pick. in previous rounds there were no value-picks available at this position and don't want to reach for a player that is not a sure bet. I was thinking about Drew with my last pick but took a 2nd starting pitcher instead, hoping that he gets back to me, because only 1 manager was missing a shortstop until this pick. as it turned out Khahan steals him away as his 2nd SS.

Peralta is the best SS left and I am wondering which sucking SS will go until the draft is completed. the field at this position is pretty much depleted.

the only other option at this point would have been a catcher, but only Astade is missing one until my next pick comes due and there are a surprisingly a few options left. I think it is weird that all SS are gone and no C. I am counting at least 5 catcher that are more valuable than the next best SS.
324youngroman

12.04 Ivan Rodriguez, C/1B, DET
I guess he lasted that long because he is getting old. but Pudge is a different type of catcher. I expect a little dropoff from last year but that is good enough for me at this point. I had to take a catcher here because I think all the other equal options (Ramon Hernandez, Michael Barrett, Russell Martin, Jason Varitek) will be gone until my next pick. The bonus about Pudge is that he also qualifies at 1B which gives me a bit more flexibility. I guess I'll draft a 2nd catcher in a later round because it is always hard to get the maximum in games played out of the catcher position. I don't want to give away 25-30 games this year.

i hate Philly - if you're around, re-pick - never mind the fact that if someone makes a double pick, they oughta be skipped, Mikel has timed out.

Khahan's queued pick as made at 8:08 pm eastern time. clock ended at 11 pm after 2:52 on the clock.

it's now 8:41 am eastern, meaning he's had 3:33 on the clock. the pick began before the weekend clock, and the majority of elapsed time was before the weekend clock.

but, if you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, you can pick at 9:08 am eastern - in about 25 minutes - and then it's four hours.

7.01 Jeff Kent 2b Had a couple of injuries last year. After that he hit .327/.407/.515. Batting clean up should get him rbi's.

Hey all,
We have 7 full rounds to get through yet. We MUST average more than a round a day because I need time to finish inputting teams. I've been putting players in sporadically as we go along. But it will still take some time at the end to finish inputting and making sure they are all correct before I start the season. And we need this all done in enough time for players to clear waivers after the draft so people can add/drop and tweak their teams before Opening Day.

The 3 hour clock has not really seemed to help all that much. We are still getting stuck in places. I just had an 11 team, 25 round draft that started on March 12 FINISH today.

I'm going to shove this down everybody's throats:

1. Use ques
2. 1 and 2 man ques are NOT acceptable unless you are up in 2-3 picks. If you send a 2 man que and you have at least 5 people before you, tough. Do some research.
3. Send ques to multiple people.
4. Check in often, whether or not you are using a que
5. 3 hours is already a bit harsh. I do not want to have to make it a 2 hour clock. Ques will help prevent this from happening.
6. If you have not found a common theme in points 1-5, I suggest reciting the alphabet between P and R over and over again.

We are setting a goal right now: To be done with this draft by 11:59PM EST, Friday March 23.
If we are not, I WILL do a clock analysis and those who have been found to be holding the clock up this week (IE: taking more than half their allotted time per pick on average) will have a 1 hour clock.

Starting Tuesday, the clock runs from 7am EST until midnight.

I understand that we need to finish soon, but I have an issue with making the clock start at 7am. Im sure I am not the only one on the west side of the country and this would be 4am on the west coast. Thats somewhat unreasonable. How about making it go to 1am instead?

I second Nerfherder's post (#363). I've held up the draft a couple of times now, and I'm sorry for that. Being on the west coast, however, a 4am start time is a bit difficult. I'd rather reduce the clock to 2hrs.

Pretty sure this is what he meant.

how random. i don't even know how to access that thread - i don't see it on the pulldown menu (unless i'm missing it.) lol

Im sure I am not the only one on the west side of the country and this would be 4am on the west coast. Thats somewhat unreasonable.

no, not really. the clock runs until midnight east coast time. that's 9 pm on the west coast. so if you west coasters check in before you go to bed - say 11 pm your time, your time will not really be up until 7 am your time, which is reasonable at this late juncture.

besides, that's what queues are for. if you think you might miss your time, LEAVE A QUEUE.

i was in the same 11-team, 25 round draft as Khahan. it was smooth as silk. if i knew i was not going to be around, i left queues with the one person picking in front of me, and the two behind me.

most other people did the same, and for many rounds, i picked for myself, and the two people after me. this weekend we got an incredible amount of work done - i mean, i think we got 5 or 6 rounds done, if not more.

in this draft? from the clock start on saturday until the clock end on sunday we got a round and a half done, which, is GREAT for this draft, but sucky for all others.

people are timing out, leaving queues in odd places, leaving very short queues, disappearing when they're near an end and know they may be right back up (i mean, come on - you're near the end, check back in in 30 minutes or something!), and all sorts of things.

some people have mea culpaed and said "look. right now is busy season at my job, and i will try to leave queues, and i will probably time out."

i can dig that. it happens. it's frustrating, but at least people like that are trying, and explaining absences.

other people are disappearing randomly, being arrogant about it when called on it, and so on.

look - this is fantasy baseball. it takes second fiddle to real life, absolutely. but i also believe that when you enter into a league and/or draft, you are making a commitment, and you have a responsibility to your fellow league owners to your damnedest - and i find it hard to believe that many people here are.

it causes me great concern for this league, because i question the committment and seriousness of the players. if you're not in the top five at the all-star break, are you going to quit?

anyway, enough of that rant. maybe i just need more coffee. but Khahan's new clock is hardly outlandish, if you look at the back end. the odds of you sleeping through your pick - even on the west coast - isn't that likely, if you check the board before going to bed.

Actually, I think Nerf has a good point. The whole of setting the clock stop/start is that we are not penalized on time while we sleep. It can be tough enough on west coasters as it is having their clock start at 5am already.

I'll gladly concede that point and run the clock from 8am EST until 1am EST. Us east coasters lose about 2-3 hours due to sleep on the end of that clock. The west coasters lose about the same on the beginning of that clock.

As of Tuesday, the clock runs from 8am EST util 1am EST.

Working midnights really sucks for these draft since I know that basically I'll be asleep for around 8 hours during the draft. I'll try leaving queues (and updating my schedule so as to try and not hold things up) as I've been lately but a couple of things.

1-I hate leaving huge queues. The lack of control is hard to deal with (ie. position runs). Also I'm sure the last thing someone taking a queue wants is 3 pages of instructions (yeah that's exagerating but you know what I mean)
2-If we zip through a round in a couple of hours and it's back to me then I'll most likely time out (unless my queue somehow lasts) I'll try to add a couple of guys I think might last (ie-picking them in my opinion a round or 2 early) at the end of the queue that I'm interested in but you never know what can happen.

I'm not trying to be a pain, just trying to be honest with my situation. At the same time I don't want to handicap my team (I do a good enough job of that myself)

As for today I'll be around for a couple of hours but I plan to go to bed fairly early. I'll have a queue ready for when I'm taking off.

same here. i am at my computer at work 9 to 5 eastern most days (with meetings tossed in here and there), and at home from about 8 to 11 (except for when i plop down in front of the boob tube, but even then, i check email every half-hour or so)...

now you have TWO people who around a computer quite often - yes, leaving a queue sucks. but, what sucks more, is a draft that lasts a month.

i think Khahan has been VERY lenient. if i were commish, we long ago would have gone to a 2 hour clock from 9 am to midnight eastern time, with a 4 hour clock from midnight to 9 am.

it's time people. as two of my favorite wrestlers say, it's "time to man up," and get this thing done.

one hour is very quick - heck, for some of us, that's a commute. lol...

that's why i'd reccomend the what i proposed up above:

if i were commish, we long ago would have gone to a 2 hour clock from 9 am to midnight eastern time, with a 4 hour clock from midnight to 9 am.

i'll add to that:

if you get skipped, and still haven't picked when it comes back around, you DO NOT get a new clock.

i know i've pissed off some people here. that's fine. i've made friends on this board. i've got people who don't like me. all i'm trying to do is get a draft done that really should have been done 2 weeks ago.

i really think it's time for something drastic.

i disagreed with it earlier, but i think a one hour clock is the way to go.

from 9 am to midnight eastern, a one hour clock. (that's 6 am to 9 pm on the west coast, which isn't unreasonable). from midnight to 9 am, a four hour clock.

enough worrying about what is fair and what isn't fair. we've had weeks to deal with that, and what's bloody unfair is for those of us who want to draft but we can't because everybody else has some damned random excuse.

if you've got another queue pick for Sandwhich, be ready to go with it, because no way should someone who timed out get a brand new three hours on the clock.

I wrote a long post but decided to delete it. I'll summarize it quickly.

Tree, I know you're frustrated and want this thing done, and we appreciate your effort, but its getting a bit tiresome to always see you complaining about a timeout or someone taking a while. My school's wireless network was down, I missed a class to ensure I could pick as soon as possible, and there's this waiting for me:

i emailed him. i guess he hasn't picked.

this simply isn't working.

And Khahan spends time with his kids, and because of your 2000+ posts today feels the need to appologize for it.

I know you're a good guy and mean well, but its rubbing me (and others) the wrong way and if I don't say anything about it you'll continue to do so without knowing. So this is me asking you to please tone it down. Khahan is on top of things as commish and will alter the clocks as he deems necessary. Its good enough for me, and it can be good enough for all of us. If its really annoying you to be spending all day watching 5 picks go by, do something else and send a queue to someone. :)

r9 -

1. everyone has an excuse. this went down, that went down, this happened, that happened. it works for a week or so. it stops working when the draft goes nearly four weeks, and we'll actually be lucky if it only goes that long.

2. khahan was apologizing because he thought he would be around sooner to take a queue, not because he felt bad.

3. as i said in a previous post, it really doesn't matter to me at all if i rub people the wrong way, or piss them off. at this point, i feel a certain right to be pissed off, because there are just enough people not giving two $hits about this draft.

i look forward to drafting, and i take it seriously enough to commit to it. if you're not going to make the commitment, then you shouldn't sign up.

4. i've taken pretty good strides to not make it personal. because it's not personal. it's about making an effort, and 3/4 of a round a day is not making an effort.

most of the people who are timing out are the same ones. it's not that hard to leave a queue.

As has been said Tree, yes, it can be difficult to leave a queue. If you're ten picks away and you don't know when a run will start/end or if your guys are all going to get picked, should that owner make a ten-man queue? Not practical at all.

this went down, that went down, this happened, that happened. it works for a week or so.

Actually, it works for eternity, or however long we will live. Our lives don't stop interfering after one week unfortunately. Our lives do not = an excuse for us. You've said you understand this; then understand it.

it really doesn't matter to me at all if i rub people the wrong way, or piss them off.

Fine. I said my peace. You rubbed me the wrong way and you don't care. I'll leave it at that.

absolutely practical, if you know you're going to be away or not have ready access to a computer, and especially when a draft has run this long.

ideal? no. practical? absolutely.

But I did not feel bad because of any posts. Just thought I'd be able to help out, made the offer and then I couldn't follow up.
......
I think the issue of the speed of the draft has been addressed quite enough. Lets just move discussion on to other topics. Like some of the nice picks that have been made in round 16 and 17 of a 24 man draft. Normally there is some kind of banter along these lines. Unfortunately, it has taken a back seat to other issues that multiple people are bring up over and over again.

Yeah. I for one was pretty amazed Curtis Granderson was sitting out there this late. The guy leads off for one of the best offenses in baseball! Although he does have that all speed and no stolen bases tag.

I also thought Rich Aurilia could be a great value pick this low. I mean, the guy's probably going to bat cleanup in SF and protect Bonds. He'll probably get some good RBI opportunities.

I was also actually suprised how the "runs" went. Seemed like 2nd basemen, SS, and RP went very quickly. While top 5 catchers stuck around for awhile, and mid-tier starting pitchers are still being picked now!

YouPlayToWin has timed out. PhilFly is up. i wonder if i have a queue from him, since i've gotten a lot.

definitely some interesting picks coming up this late. there are players i marked as great values at this point in the draft, and other players i couldn't imagine drafting, and even a few that i had no clue who they were!

there are still some nice players out there too...

Woooooooo, at least one of my picks in the draft is deemed decent.

I was thinking the same about Aurillia. I've had my eye on him for a couple of rounds but didn't pull the trigger until now. Should put up decent numbers as the "young" guy in the lineup. Plus some nice versatility.

I agree though. Been an interesting draft.

well its an interesting draft because if you have a guy you want, you gotta grab him when you can because he might not last a dozen picks later when it finally gets back to you. There were a few times when I know I reached (Derek Lee in the second round, Jeremy Sowers in the 16th or 17th).

Lot more strategy then in a standard 12 team league. I kinda like it, you get the same effect in a NL or AL only league, but I like the idea of having both leagues available to pick from.

1. Red Scorpions
2. I hate Philly
3. Mikel
4. Khahan
5. Dayton
6. Dayton
7. Khahan
8. Mikel

9. I hate Philly
10. Red Scorp
11. Wiggs

i have queues (provided the players last) for all the teams in bold.

which means if Wiggs and I Hate Philly both stick around for a few after they pick, we can turn this thing around mightly quickly...

we are moving well today. this is cool. right now, Griffey Jr in the 19th round has all the potential to be a steal.

probably the perfect spot for him. if he stays injured, he doesn't damage your team. if he stays healthy and hits well, you've got a steal.

Khahan - can we get a ruling on this tonight, when you get two minutes?

standard draft rules do not give you another clock when you get skipped - but i'll stand by what you decide. still, someone who has already cost us 3 hours at one point in the day shouldn't cost us another three.

I think if a guy times out once, then it comes back, and he still hasnt made the pick, then he shouldnt get another clock.

But once he checks in and gets up to date on his picks, then he gets the 3 hour window back.

I think that's fair, but your right, we should make a ruling one way or another.

Hey Guys, things arent getting any easier here. Well, the good news is we've got a brand new computer at work. The bad news is that most of it is still ON THE FLOOR IN THE BOX. No access from there for the next few days. I've sent a updated Q to Tree with some oddball picks that should make it through a few rounds. I'll be back around 8 tonight (WED), some of the AM tomorrow and Fri AM, and then sometime late Friday night. I'll be checking in but my Q should cover it. Use the cell # if you need to
