Final draft order.
1. Bandos
2. Taxman
3. Fosten
4. wolfer
5. Bash Brothers
6. Aggy
7. Uptown Bombers
8. TD
9. mjd
10. JKaye
11. RoboGuru
12. jumpball
13. Mudge
14. Electroman
15. WG
16. Hubble

Everyone's done this before, so I'm not going to bore you with my draft etiquette rant, unless we have a problem.

If you are going to be away from a computer for a long time, please be kind enough to let us know here, or preferably, use the queue system on Kafenatid. When using the queue system, please make sure to assign designated picker(s). I suggest the manager before and after you. Remember to make your queue available, when you do use. Also note the "first player only" and "all players" options. As administrator of the draft, I'm automatically a DP. If you want me to be your DP, add me to your list so I'll get the email.

Special instructions for your DPs should be left on this thread. ie: "This queue is for round X only"

DPs, please check this thread for instructions before making said pick. No instructions, then fire away. It is every managers responsibility to leave instructions for their queue, if needed.

I'm leaving the clock off for now, but will turn it on tomorrow at noon. 6 hour clock with a pause between 11PM and 7AM. If/when it becomes your turn, you may pick, but all picks made before noon tomorrow are discretionary and not on the clock.

We'll discuss a weekend clock later. I'm leaning towards having a 8 hour clock seeing how long it took to select draft slots. I don't want this draft coming to a grinding halt on the weekends.

As commish, it's my job to keep this draft moving, but I'll also gladly help you out with a phone call or an email, as needed.

Happy drafting

I've been thinking about rationales. I don't have moderator privileges, so it's going to be nearly impossible to do them unless someone in the league has moderator privileges and wants to volunteer their services.

As a AAA league, we should be doing them.

I have e-mailed dave and requested that he review our managers and select a moderator limited to the time of our draft or request an existing moderator review our moderator thread to adjust accordingly. I agree that as a AAA league we need to "explain" our reasoning for our selections.

Do we have any volunteers for the limited moderator engagement.

I will volunteer and I assume mjd has (been) volunteered (everyone else just took a step back).

Are their other interested volunteers? Of course Dave (Guru) will have last say, as well as provide instructions/limitations etc.

Please post here by to morrow 6PM EST with your e-mail address...or e-mail me with a subject line "Moderator" (so that I can pick it out of spam filter).

I may not get to a computer before 1PM or so to start the clock. Shouldn't matter much, as I've notified the league, via email, that the clock will be turned on and no one has voiced any problems with it.

RE: Rationales

KKB wrote this in the RIBC thread: Quoting Guru: "I usually draft my rationales as I make picks, so that all I need to do when the time comes is copy and paste. I recommend that approach for everyone."

I would like to emphatically (and boldly) support this idea. This is my 4th RIBC (hard to believe!) and the only frustrating part is waiting days on end for people to post their rationales. RIBC takes commitment from all involved, so please, PLEASE!, follow Guru's advice so that you can post your rationales in a reasonable timeframe.

Besides, it's just much less work that way because you don't spend an hour trying to remember all the reasons you selected the player.

Guru replied:
It's been a useful discipline for other reasons too. On more than one occasion, I found my rationale to be so uncompelling that I decided to change the pick. So now I almost always draft the rationale before I make the pick.

I don't think we should start a rational thread yet. From RIBC thread quoting Guru:

Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned either here or in the rationale threads, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out.

After two rounds have been completed, a separate draft rationale thread will be started. We will try to keep that thread on a 2 round lag. Therefore, after you make your pick in round 3, please immediately post your round 1 pick rationale, and so forth. I usually draft my rationales as I make picks, so that all I need to do when the time comes is copy and paste. I recommend that approach for everyone.

I think we should all consider drafting our rationals as we make our picks, but not posting them until after the 2 round lag. We still need someone with moderator priviledges or this won't work.

Is the clock on or off over the weekend?
I ask because I will likely not be able to get online from about 11-ish on Friday night until dinnertime on Sunday.
With that said, I'm going to ask my buddy to keep his eye on our league and will give him the ability to draft a player.

Good question, jb. At this pace we won't finish in time. No worry though, at this point, it's early. I am seriously considering a 8 hour clock on the weekends, to start. I'd like to see us do 1 round per day and 1 round per weekend.

I'm in favor of keeping the clock running on the weekends, even at a slower rate. Obviously the draft is going to slow down on the weekends, but I think no clock would be real frustrating. No one will ever know when their pick might be coming up. Especially since we are so early here, I think the clock would be useful. Let's make some good progress before we start being lenient with the time management.

My thinking exactly, Uptown. After how long it took to choose draft positions.

In the mean time, if Hubble does not pick before the clock stops tonight, I will stop the clock, to wait for him. If we can't give a guy a break right after his wife has a baby, when can we? He might be a little busy and I'm inclined to give him some time to get up to speed. If he needs a phone call or whatever, we'll do what it takes to help him out.

I'm a little confused as to why the draft is stopped. I totally agree with the reasoning in giving Hubble some leeway, but he wasn't due to time out until well into the morning, no? Wasn't the clock just going to be paused overnight? Why not let the pause do its thing and the clock run its course and see if he picked in his allotted time? If he timed out in the morning and we wanted to stop the draft, I would understand and agree. But why the preemptive stop way before he actually times out?

I'm out of pocket until about 11AM and I don't want a league member whose wife just had a baby recently to lose his first two picks.

I think it's a rolling clock and he will time out before I can stop the clock.

MJD -

As opposed to STOPing the draft, going to no time limit is more friendly as it would have allowed Hubble to pick and the rest of us to access the draft at least. This same thing just happened in another draft and we figured that out.

Soon it'll be easier to leave queues that don't get depleted so quickly.

Pretty weak for AAA. Today, I'm very disappointed. We must do a better job with leaving queues and checking in or we're not going to make opening day.

We had some pretty quick clusters of picks at times, but just got derailed here and there. I wonder if the top of the draft is around so that if wolfer could have left at least that two man queue they couldn't have made the turn back to him for the AM. Oh well, hopefully we will all hit our stride over the next few.

That's the frustrating part. I know we can and will get it done. Everyone just needs to focus, communicate, and cooperate.

I was just hoping at AAA, it would not be so painfully slow, at times. It's nice when a draft has some ebbs and flows, but grinding stops for hours at a time with no communication sucks.

We are still hamstrung because people are not using the queue feature. Certainly, when it gets to within 1 player, we ought to be able leave a a two player queue. I am leaving a two player que, but we be able to ck back in within 1 hour since I am in a turn around draft slot.

mjd -- i feel your pain . . . however . . .

I was one of the pain inducing managers yesterday when I had to leave at 11:30 for an all afternoon team session at work. At that time, there were 5 picks in front of me -- and about 5 1/2 hours before I'd see a computer again. It was too much work to leave a 6 man queue at that point. (It will be easier to do that later.) When I finally got back, I noticed that those 5 picks were made in the span of one hour -- one of our spurts.

My point is that even if we all try harder to leave a queue and be available as much as possible, there will be times when it's asking too much to do that (and we also have to be patient with "Daddy" too!). Although this will likely hurt me more than other managers (I have a lot of sites blocked at work, including RotoGuru -- luckily they haven't gotten to kafenatid yet), I propose that we shrink the clock to 5 hours (and reserve the right to change it to 4 if that doesn't speed us up) and shrink the nightly pause to 6 hours.

Also, please don't shrink the clock for one particular manager -- that's not within the spirit of the community to which we all belong.

The rationale for Dice-K says that they are in Asia, so the time difference is what the issue is. I'm not sure I agree with penalizing only one manager eitherm especially one that hasn't officially timed out yet.

That being said, asking people who will be away for a few hours to leave a queue or a message seems proper. In the case of Rotoguru being blocked, an email could have been sent to the commish just so everyone knew what was going on and not waiting around.

And on that note, I am going to be leaving in the half hour or so. If my pick doesn't come up by then, my queue will be available.

I specifically asked for full disclosure on any issues that needed to be addressed during this draft and that it was absolutely imperative to communicate any problems within the group. I promised to do everything in my power to help out with any issue. Hubble's wife had a baby, we cut him some slack. If BB is on the other side of the world, they need to let us know when they will be available to pick and leave a Q when they can't.

Anything less than 10 picks is not too much to ask for a queue, IMO, especially after about the third round. If you are properly prepped and know ahead of time that your schedule will be dicey, you need to use the queue.

The precedent of shortening one's clock or at least the threat of that has already been set by Guru himself in the 2007 RIBC draft thread header: "Although the clock will be set at 6 hours, we cannot make satisfactory progress if many managers use much of that allowance. We need to average a little more than one round per day, so please do your best to keep up the pace. If we fall behind, managers who are chronically slow may be put on an shorter clock."

We are not averaging a little more than one round per day and we are falling more behind every day we don't make this minimum, Disturbing patterns are showing up early in this draft

As far as the spirit of this community: during these slow drafts there have always been certain rules of draft etiquette that need to be observed. The current level of rudeness by some members of this league are rapidly becoming intolerant.

At 3:00PM jeffaggy made a pick in another kafenatid draft. At that time his current pick was three picks away. That is only a 4 player queue, not a 10 player queue.

I see mjd's point and favor corrective action now, not days from now. If feelings get huer within the community, so-be-it. The commish has job to do.

We either help him, get out of the way or let him assign players in lieu of a draft.

From the Eastern League Chat thread:

218: so do we have to wait another four hours for someone who timed out already?

219: Right now yes, but at this pace, some people are going to get their clocks cut down by the end of the day tomorrow.

I didn't know this before tonight, but it seems that there is precedent for shortening clocks for individual managers. I'm still in favor of shortening our pick time to 5:00 and our pause to 6:00 first.

Here's what I'm proposing. When I get up tomorrow, I'm halving the clock to 3 hours. For most of us, this will not be an issue, as most are picking within an hour or less. For those few who are letting the majority of us down, it will be. Once people start timing out, I'll go ahead and either shorten their clock or skip their turn. I don't want to be tyrannical, but we must quicken the pace. This draft will finish on time.

And anyone who fails to accept my invite to join us here to communicate a problem, will have to eventually deal with severe sanctions. This draft will finish on time.

BB and jeffaggy, what's the deal?

Yes, it is getting easier, but at this point in the draft, my pick that's 7 positions down the road is still somewhat dependent on the 6 picks in front of me.
In a few more rounds, that dependency won't be as important.

You do whatever you think you need to do as commish and I'll manage within those constraints. My posts should only be considered as suggestions based on what works for me -- you've got all 16 of us to handle! :-)

Our apology for the delay yesterday. Not trying to argue here but just so you guys know we're in Asia and there's a 12 hr difference. When we're up last time it was 4 a.m. here. My brother waited till 1 a.m. and we were still 5 picks away, so he went to bed.

Anyway we knew this is the price to pay for playing fantasy baseball in Asia so there's no complain. We'll try harder or maybe get up every 2 hours if there's a chance we'll have to pick at the odd hours.

The guys in front of us pick quick so sometimes it's hard to leave a queue with long lists. Then again we'll also try our best to do that.

Ironically, my access during the work day is frequent, when I get home after 7pm, sometimes I can't access the internet until I take care of her and the house, please try to be a little sympathetic with me as your are with Taxman's situation.

I have avoided getting involved so far as the frustration is always taken out of context. In a draft a few years back, I expressed frustration at the latest 5 hour delay and the specific manager who happened to have been the culprit took great offense, citing, as aggy did, his previous track record of picking in a timely manner. so:

Aggy: It is NOT YOU that the frustration is directed at. The frustration has been building. You happened to be the latest to take over 4 hours to pick. That is all. I, for one, was unaware of your situation and I do have sympathy. As I have sympathy for our friends in the far east, and Hubble, and Tax.

Here is my take after a dozen of these drafts:

1. The clock is meant to allow for emergencies (I had to rush out of the house yesterday cuz both my kids had ear infections and was gone for a few hours without being able to post or turn my Q on - they're fine BTW).It happens.

2. Courtesy is VERY important. If you anticipate delaying the draft by more than an hour or so, please just post so people can plan accordingly. Post, "have to go out for three hours, I'm X picks away" and either" Q left and on with instructions" or "really can not leave a Q at this time." At least the rest of the league will know to stop checking.

a.People get frustrated when they have no idea why the draft is being delayed.

b. I , and maybe others, get angry when no explanation is given. You don't need tell us your private details, a simple "sorry, unavoidable, won't happen again." It really annoys me when I wait 5 hours, the pick is made, no rationale or explanation posted. I feel like you don't care. AND this community is based on cooperation and courtesy - act accordingly.

3. If there is a long delay, the next in line MUST leave a Q. There is almost NO CASE where a 2-3 man Q can not be left. There are always a few managers who simply refuse to use the Q feature and I have no idea why. I have completed two OTC drafts this year. Granted they were 12 team leagues, but one took just over a week and the other took just under 2 weeks. I made about a half dozen picks personally. If there is something about the Q you do not like, lets discuss it and figure it out. PLEASE.

4. We will finish, we always do. We are less than 2 rounds behind the RIBC. The Q making will get easier as we go on as we will need different things.

5. Remember, 5 picks can take 5 minutes, plan accordingly.

So, as I sit on vacation slurping down Pale Ales by the pool, remember that I am around a lot and happy to be a DP for anyone.

Peace :)

Via a new commsh tool on Kafenatid, I can see who has players in a queue or if the queue is empty or not. I cannot see a name until it is that manager's pick. Very cool.

Mudges queue is empty and not available.

If you're within a few picks from now either leave a short queue or check in tomorrow AM.

Also, people are busy with their own drafts, busy lives and other things, so it can happen.

I'm going out for a few hours. Things will probably move slow during this time since our league mates in Asia are probably sleeping and Taxman is attending a funeral. Someone else besides me is monitoring his draft's, but Tax will be out of pocket until this evening.

Looks like aggy's wife might have had the baby. He actually had 12 hours before timing out, at noon.

Hopefully, everything is fine and he shows up soon. Because of his mitigating circumstances, he will not be skipped if it becomes his turn and he still has this current time out on the board. He'll get his full clock, but we can't afford to stop the draft at this point.

Problem with Aggy is that he needs 2 MI and a CI. The pool for these players was already thinning before he timed out at noon.

I propose that when it becomes his turn again, if he still has not caught up, we briefly pause the draft in order to choose the next ranked players on Yahoo, Rotowire, Rotoworld, ect. to get him caught up. It's pretty late in the draft, but he's got some holes in his lineup that need to be addressed soon, if we are going to maintain competitive balance in the league.

Any other ideas?

The last pick Aggy made was around 3pm Saturday. Given Aggy's circumstances, I think we should turn off the clock and give him until Tuesday morning to make his picks. If he doesn't pick by the time MJD gets up on Tuesday, then MJD should make the picks for Aggy.

The draft has been moving fairly fast the last few days, and even with a days delay we should still finish well ahead of schedule.

Just for the record, here's the plan:

Tomorrow, without intervention from Aggy, he will time out shortly after 7AM ET. Go ahead and pick BB, and others at the turn. In 10 more picks, it will be Aggy's turn again. If he shows up, he can make up the 2 picks he owes from the remaining pool of players at any time.

If he fails to show by his next turn, I will pick the 3 highest ranked Yahoo players, according to the positions of his greatest need. Then the draft will continue and we'll go from there.

I'll be back by noon and let's see what happens.

As always, all comments and suggestions are welcomed and will be seriously taken under advisement. I've gotten a few emails and I appreciate them, but I'd like to keep this discussion on the public forum, so that whatever happens is on the record.

How about mjd picks two for Aggy right after he times out? Since we all know mjd's plan, we (the 5 managers picking between Aggy's picks, including myself) might pick best MI and CI available before the thinning pool is further depleted. I'd feel pretty guilty if I do pick an infielder.

I can wait until 8AM ET, if extra time is needed, for either Aggy or mjd.

I know the issue seems to have been settled, but I'll add my two cents anyway.

I think that if Aggy times out again, the draft should procede up to and including pick 16.16. At that point the draft should be stopped and two players should be selected for Aggy. After pick 16.16, all teams will have 16 players, except Aggy who will have 14. At that point I think we need to catch his team up. Allowing teams to have 17 players before Aggy has 15 seems a bit harsh, especially given the fact we the circumstances of his absence. Of course, if Aggy returns anytime prior to 16.16, he should make his picks.

If the above scenario plays out, after two players are selected for him, round 17 should begin as normal. As to whether or not Aggy gets the full clock for his 17th round pick, I'll leave that open. But I really think that after the 16th round is over, Aggy should be given 2 players from a standard ranking.

That's my opinion anyway. For the record, I'll be away from the computer from 6 am until 3 pm on Monday, so I won't be able to take part in any other discussion. Also, I'll likely turn on my queue in the morning before I leave for work just in case my pick should come up before 3 pm.

I won't be back until about noon ET, so don't wait for me. BB, pick whoever you are going to pick, don't worry. If Aggy does not show up by the time he times out just after 7 AM, he will be MIA for almost 36 hours and that's unacceptable.

Several people, in various drafts, this year, have had family emergencies and situations that were beyond their control and somehow they communicated to their league that there was a situation. Including a couple of managers in this league. I'm not trying to be heartless here, but it's a pretty well known fact, on these message boards that you can't just disappear for days at a time during a draft, without some sort of communication, and not expect to suffer some sort of penalty.

If Bandos wants to hold up after round 16 to either wait for Aggy or wait for me to pick for Aggy, that's on him and not necessary. When it becomes Aggy's turn again, we'll have plenty of time to make his picks.

I picked for wolfer. I understand the rationale behind Uptown suggestion. If MJD was around, maybe it would make sense, but to wait til noon, then possibly wait another 4 hours at aggy's pick would be tough. When we get to 17.06, we get him caught up, and continue on. Realistically, less than 2 of the next 10 players we draft will remain on our teams anyhow.

Let us all hope that everything is WONDERFUL in aggy's world!

Matt Lindstrom (mudge), Phillip Hughes, and Josh Hamilton (both Fosten) are not in the Yahoo database. Those player are theirs alone as long as there is room on said roster whenever they do become available.

I've added placeholders (players unlikely to be drafted or on the DL) to those rosters.

So I guess that means if you drop the placeholder, you essentially give up the right to the player.

I just remember that if/when he becomes available, as long as you have an empty slot in your roster (placeholder) you have exclusive rights to him.

Mudge - you should keep the placeholder on your roster until the drafted plater becomes available. I would email Yahoo now to request that he be entered. Actually MJD should do that after the draft is over for all the unavailable players.

As far as how he gets on your roster, I have never been able to get around waivers with yahoo. You should just wait til he is a fre agent but maybe others know better than me.

I just pulled this off the RIBC discussion thread header:

"You may draft a player even if he is not currently listed on Yahoo. In that event, you will have the first rights to claim that player when he is listed, as long as you preserve that roster slot for him.

Once the draft is completed, you will no longer be able to protect a slot for any unlisted player. At that point, unlisted players will only be available through the standard waiver/free agent process."

Of course, Fosten just drafted his 3rd player not listed in the Yahoo database, Sammy Sosa. Need another placeholder name.

And unless Fosten is lurking, he'll never know, as he has not posted once on this thread. I've sent him multiple emails with a link to this site.

I'm back.................. finally. About 10 seconds after my 12:35PM post, I lost power. Someone must have hit a utility pole because it's 70 and clear. And it's only snowed once in the past 2 years.

A rare occurrence for me, but it figures it would be in the middle of a draft.

Thanks to Taxman. Fortunately, I had his cell number and he made my 21st round pick and was prepared to help me make my picks for the 2 drafts that I still have going.

LEAGUE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Still missing a bunch of rationales, thanks to those who are keeping up with them. The rest of you slackers need to get on them.

We will be doing a draft summary, I'll have that up soon. No specific order necessary, just fire when ready.

PLease check your rosters on Yahoo under "draft results". I want to start the league soon and it's alot easier to fix any errors now before hitting "start".

After I start the league, it will take 48 hours for wavers to clear. After that, players can be picked up as FA without impact on your WW priority.

Placeholders. I'm going to ask a further question about this to another commish or on the RIBC thread for clarification. I always thought that as long as you held on to a placeholder, you had exclusive rights to that player, even after the season started.

2 more placeholders:
Scott Baker->Joey Votto (Fosten #3)
David Murphy->Joakim Sorio (Taxman)

For other placeholders, see post # 401,402, and 432.

Here's clarification on players not yet listed in the Yahoo data base. Thanks, Guru.

You can hold onto a slot for drafted players only. But you can no longer put in a claim (waiver or otherwise) for players who are not yet listed.

Perhaps I should have said it this way:

You may draft a player even if he is not currently listed on Yahoo. In that event, you will have the first rights to claim that player when he is listed, as long as you preserve that roster slot for him. Once the draft is completed, you will no longer be able to protect a slot for any unlisted player who you did not draft. At that point, unlisted players will only be available through the standard waiver/free agent process.

all --> I'm not certain if this has been explicitly stated yet or not, but in order to preserve a roster slot for your drafted player that's not listed in Yahoo, you MUST keep the assigned placeholder on your roster. Once you drop the placeholder, you forfeit exclusive rights to your drafted player. When the drafted player becomes available, the commissioner can make some fancy moves to get him on your roster in place of your placeholder without the 2 day wait and waiver claim.

mjd --> if you need another placeholder, Davis Romero (Tor - RP) is out for the season.

mjd --> my first 24 picks as entered in the league are accurate.

Thanks again for getting this done! As a commissioner of a league, I understand that it's a lot of work.

Jumpball,

http://www.kafenatid.net/feedback.php?feedback_subject=otc_player

You can try this to add a player to kefenatid. It may take 24 hours though. Maybe you can just put in a placeholder and let MJD know who you really want to pick.

Yeah, I read that -- I didn't realize that I had to be THAT proactive; especially with a player that IS listed in Yahoo.

I'm going to go ahead and pick another player -- it was a toss up anyway.

I have a little quam about timing out. According to me, I should have 6 minutes left on the clock, no? 6 hour clock on the weekend. The clock finishes a 1 am, last pick was at 10:46. That is 2 hrs 14 minutes. Starts at 6 am. I was at my computer at 9:36 am, giving me about 10 minutes to pick no?

Electro, please make your last pick so I can finish loading rosters onto Yahoo.

Everyone please check our rosters under "Draft Central"->"draft results" for errors. It's alot easier for me to correct a roster error before I start the season.

I'm hitting the "Done" button on Monday when I get up between 12 and 1PM ET.

Electro, thought I fixed it, but Yahoo switched them back and now it won't let me switch and "save." I'll try it tomorrow when I'm not half asleep.

Or maybe I'll have to fix it right before I hit "done". In any event, I'm aware or it and it will be fixed before the season starts.

LEAGUE ANNOUNCEMENT

Draft has been released, and the league is activated. Waiver priorities have been set. All undrafted players are now subject to waiver claims for 48 hours. After that time period, they will become free agents and available on a first come first served basis. Any dropped players will be subject to the 48 hour WW before becoming free agents.

Waver priorities are set to the inverse order of the first round of the draft.

Electro and WG: it's on to plan B. Yahoo would not let me edit your rosters. Please trade Lugo for Felix Hernandez ASAP.

The following players are still not in the Yahoo database and are represented by the corresponding placeholders. Please do not waste your waver priority picking these players up. You have exclusive rights to said player as long as you maintain roster space for them. Either keep the placeholder on your roster or maintain an empty slot on your roster. I will be watching.

Phillip Hughes->Keith Foulke (Fosten)
Josh Hamilton->Kris Benson (Fosten)
Sammy Sosa->Sean Marshall (Fosten)
Joey Votto->Scott Baker (Fosten)
Joakim Soria->David Murphy (Taxman)
Matt Lincecum->Josh Kinney (Roboguru)
Dustin Hermanson->Cha Baek (Hubble)
