Subject: NBBL Preseason discussion and moves

We have 2 weeks or so until the season begins and we have a few things to accomplish.
1. Contracts and positions - According to the rules contracts need to be into me 72 hours after the completion of the draft. That was last night. However, I'm going to change that. Contracts are due to me this Sunday by midnight... The reason I need them so soon, is if they aren't correct we need time to correct them.
Positions, once I have the players put into yahoo, which I will start today, you need to update your rosters for starters...
2. Money, I have Money accounted for 10/12 people. I'm not listing who I have so far here, as I don't have that information handy, however you know who you are.
3. In conjunction with the money. What do we want the payouts to be?
We have $300 to spend.
4. Rule questions and clarifications need to be finished, I don't want to have to change the rules mid season.
5. As far as this league is concerned, all players are on a 1 year contract at this point, meaning any drops or adds or anything will cost you. We also all have 20 Dollas to spend... Use wisely my friends.
Anything else? Just ask... Enjoy the NCAAs its baseball time soon. |

just want to confirm.
1. once a guy's contract hits three years, i can renew, no questions? (or is that two years?)
2. if a guy's contract expires, i have first right to re-sign him before he becomes a free agent? remind me how this works again, if it's anything different or more specific than that?

Believe that's no and no Tree.
1. Renewing of contracts I never knew about, how it was before is you say sign a guy 1 year, then the end of the year you have an extra contract year left and upgrade them to a 2 year, meaning they are still yours but next season they will be on year 2 of 2. Like if someone is a 3 year, they will be on 1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3, then RFAs. Only way to keep them longer without threat of loss would be to upgrade to 4 or 5 year making them 4 of 4/5 they following year.
2. They become RFA's. Meaning it's like an auction and after said time is up on that player you have the option to Match or Pass.
I only half skimmed through the rules so didn't notice if there were any changes based on this contract stuff, so it could be wrong.

Something around this would probably be pretty good. Could make the payouts a little smaller across the board and give 6th place $25 also so everyone in the playoffs at least can have a paid spot in the next season.
$300
1st place season - $25
1st playoffs - $100 2nd playoffs - $75 3rd playoffs - $45 4th playoffs - $30 5th playoffs - $25

Upgrades are easy...
There are 2 ways to upgrade contracts. First way is during the season, if you do this, you can only upgrade contracts that are 1, 2, or 3 years in length. The upgrade must be at least 2 years...
IE Joe Mauer signed 2007-2010 = 3 years. I decide to upgrade him in 2008. His contract is now 2007-2012 and 5 years, he also counts as a 5 year contract.
Contracts of 4 and 5 years cannot be upgraded until they expire, however you could buy them out, then they go on waivers and then you could resign them by claiming them off waivers and signing them to a contract for the remainder of the year. that would cost you a lot of dollas to do that though.
When contracts expire at the end of the year, you can resign guys before RFA begins in January, as long as 12 of those guys go into RFA.
Then in RFA, you can match or pass on RFA for the bids that were placed on them
Rosters are in Yahoo... The following guys are not in the DB and you have to add them through Waivers. Remember if you fill their roster spot, you lose your rights to that guy.
Tony - Fla Matt Lindstrom RP WG - NYY Philip Hughes SP WG - Mil Yovani Gallardo SP Punk - Tam Jeff Niemann SP Wiggs - Ari Justin Upton OF

When contracts expire at the end of the year, you can resign guys before RFA begins in January, as long as 12 of those guys go into RFA.
so, if i have 18 guys with expiring contracts, i can resign up to 6 of them - any of them - before anyone gets a crack at them?

And how do you resign them? If they are 1 year you resign for 1 more year? If they are year 3 of 3 what happens then?

one more question - can we do any sort of adds/drops before the season starts?
or are we committed to the roster we drafted?

Post #5 -You can resign 6 of those guys before anyone else has a crack at them correct.
Post #6 -Expiring Contracts can be resigned for any amount of time as long as your roster fits the guidelines of 1 5 year guy, 12 expirings for the next season, 25 players and less than 50.
The only real restriction is middle of the contract upgrades, which are a minimum of 2 years. If you are in year 2 of 3 and you want to upgrade that contract, you must upgrade to 5 years. That player then counts as a 5 year player, and cannot be resigned again until his contract expires.
#7 - Add/drops and Roster moves are only allowed after I receive your contracts, as nothing is free and you have to buy out contracts. Basically consider everyone on your roster as signed to a contract of at least 1 year now.
When you do go to drop someone, remember $2 per contract year, $1 for current year if after June 1 and $1 to pick up a player, we don't do freebees here.
#8 Tree I'll fix your roster.

I guess i'm still confused on the resigning a player. If i've got 15 1 year guys I can choose to resign a max of 3 guys to any kind of contracts I want? They don't have to be the same or anything?
|
14 | Matt G
ID: 561039520 Fri, Mar 16, 2007, 19:57

15 Expiring contracts, this year that would obviously be 1 year guys, you can sign those 3 other guys to any contract you want(max of 5 years) as long as... 1. You keep 25 guys on your roster. 2. Stay under the $50 cap 3. Have 12 guys who will expire next year.
So you have 15 guys expiring, you resign 3 of them to 2 year contracts(2008-2010). As long as you have a total of 12 guys expiring next year... Remember its not the # of years you are signed, its the year your contract expires...
After this season you could have 3 2 year guys...
2 expiring at the end of 2008. (2007 -2009) 3 expring at the end of 2009 (2008-2010)
Obviously only the 2 expiring at the end of the 2008 season count as expiring contracts for that year... So you needs 10 1 year guys on your roster who will expire...
Get it?

Does anyone else feel like we may not have enough dollas to go around? I mean only 20 dollas to start means only 20 moves can be amde all season assuming the min dollas per move. And then if you do that you have none for Restricted FA?

Also, need to really pay attention to how you work your contracts.

We have to pay for expiring contracts? So the 12 guys who will expire next year cost us $24?

Yes I meant An not and, sorry...
Yes we only get 20 dollas for moves, the idea is to really manage your money.
Remember you get dollas based on performance at the end of the year, and then dollas at the beginning of next season.
Contracts should be sent to me VIA email. I will put them into my excel sheet then before the season starts I can send that sheet to everyone. You can play with it and see what you have and the other contracts. It also contains a schedule for the year.
This SpreadSheet will keep the entire league on it.
I will Send you the rules GF as I have an Updated version that includes the DL revision.
A thing on Dollas, if we really feel that 20 is not enough we can look into possibly allowing more. I've talked about this at great extent with WG and Tony and some of the other guys, and it limits your moves quite a bit, but it makes you manage your money, which is the whole idea.
We won't have 17.5 Dolla bids going on for RFA I can tell you that much, it basically lets everyone stay competitive I think.
thoughts?
If anyone else wants an Updated copy of the Rules let me know.

well, instead of increasing dollas, i'd prefer to see a series of "free" moves allowed.
1. you get three "free" DL moves - that includes moving the guy to the DL, adding someone new, and subsequently dropping someone when the original get active active again.
however. when the player gets off the real DL, you have 3 days to either drop him, or the player you added. if you drop anyone else, it doesn't qualify for a "free" DL move.
2. i'd like there to be a limited "free" add/drop period. like - maybe for all of April, you can adjust your roster and such with free add/drops.
however. when you add someone, they automatically assume the contract of the person you dropped. additionally, when you add someone, you cannot drop them. they are locked into that contract.

So what are my options? Cost involved?
B. (After the season) expired 4 of 4.
So what are my options? Cost involved?

Tree - Got your contracts, they look good... As for the free moves, I'll think about it.
Right now, it only costs 1 Dolla if you drop the original player you picked up off the DL, thats kinda the bonus.
I don't think we will do free ADD/Drop periods... I just don't like the sound of that, and I know that would cause problems, considering Yahoo won't be housing our league after the season, so it basically is done by who gets the move to me first... So if you email me and MikeyB IM's me, and I get the IM first, its like... too bad... So I'll have to think about this... but for right now its a no.
GF - A. No options, a 4 year contract has to expire cannot be upgraded.
B. You may sign him to another contract for any length as long as you have the dollas, and 12 other guys enter RFA that year. As well as staying under the 50 CAP.
MikeyB - Got your contracts, look good.
Still waiting on a couple of contracts, I've talked to a few of you who are sending them shortly, but if you haven't talked to me I need your contracts.
I'm Asking for them so early so that 1. We can do moves, 2. If they don't work we can get them corrected before the start of the season.
thanks!

re 31 - When the year ends we won't have yahoo holding all our players and moves and everything... I'll do it with a spread sheet.
I want them early so that we can start making moves, trades etc... right now you cant add/drop a player until you get your contracts in. Also, remember all moves must come through me on Email.
re 32 No, when he expires, as long as you have 12 other expiring contracts you can resign him to any contract...
Guys you are making this harder than it has to be...
50 years cap 25 players 12 contracts that must expire and go into RFA every year.
If you have 14 contracts that expire that year, you may resign 2 of those guys before they go to RFA... the other 12 have to go to RFA...

Tree - was unaware about that, I'll have to look into how this may benefit us.
Still don't know about this "free" period. It kinda rewards people for drafting really recklessly and then being able to swap players they don't want. IE you have Carl Pavano signed to a 3 year contract and it's the free period, so you can just cut his contract and pick up another? Kinda voids the whole point of contracts.
Wiggs - I do not have a check from you yet... when did you send it?
I got contracts from a bunch of you yesterday and this morning, thanks. For those of you remaining, we spoke and I know they are coming soon so that's fine.

yea, Wiggs - that's probably a league-by-league rule.
Justin Upton is a weird one though. it's very unlikely he'll be called up to the Majors this year, so i don't expect to see him in the Yahoo database.
he's starting the season in A ball, will probably finish up in AA, and *maybe* be called up before August, but it's not certain. that's a long time to keep a roster spot open - not just for memory sake, but for having your team be "short handed"...
also - and i think this is absolutely important to discuss now. the following is a list of players Matt posted that were not in the database:
Tony - Fla Matt Lindstrom RP WG - NYY Philip Hughes SP WG - Mil Yovani Gallardo SP Punk - Tam Jeff Niemann SP Wiggs - Ari Justin Upton OF
let's say Wiggs signs Upton to a 5-year deal. per the rules set in post four of this thread, if he picks someone up to fill that waiver roster spot, he loses his claim on Upton.
so - how does that work? does the person he picks up immediately assume that 5 year deal?
it seems to me that anything else would be patently unfair, as i can't just decide to drop a guy with a 5 year deal if i want (or, can i?)

Good point. I'd go with the view that if you pick up someone to fill that spot you auto-buy out the persons contract since that's the just of what you are doing. Using up the bones for that transaction. It was your choice to draft them, so don't see why there should be a freebee if they aren't able to play for you this year, or next for that matter.

To answer the questions:
1. If you have a Guy who is not in Yahoo and You choose to pick up someone else, you MUST pay for that. Simply because someone else could of drafted that player (Justin Upton for example) and signed him to a long term deal. I don't think it is fair to be able to draft him, sign him for 1 year after the initial draft for free to see if he comes up early, and then swap.
You made the choice to draft him, you gotta play by the contract rules...
2 dollas to buy out per contract year, 1 dolla for this year after June 1st...
thanks!

It should start at any time you want it to. But it eats away at your Dolla's. You signed a guy to 1 year want to release him and pick up someone else believe that's 3 Dolla's.

Sending out the Contracts tomorrow, Fosten still hasnt gotten his in, which is BS... but I'm sending them anyhow... they are on my USB key on the other side of the room, but the gym was very rough tonight...
I'll update his afterwards...
When you do a move... and you can do them now, you can do it on Yahoo, and email me at the same time... that way I can change the dollas. Just be sure that you dont use too many...

Matt -
i was under the impression, and it seemed to be backed up in the original discussion thread, that we were allowed a maximum of two 5-year deals.
one owner appears to have three.

If you check the rules that were sent out in the NBBL Rules.doc file, it clearly states in there that the only restrictions are MINIMUM of 1 5 year guy and 12 expiring contracts, 25 guys, 50 Dolla Cap.
Here is the contracts Section directly from the updated rules.
Contracts Done in years, 5 through 1. You MUST have at least 1 5 year and 12 EXPIRING contracts. That means that in year 2 you may have expiring contracts from your 2 year guys(2007-2009) who count towards that… Remember 12 is the MINIMUM. So you can have more than that if you don’t re-sign. The key is the YEAR that the contract expires… In season 2 you can have guys who expire that year who are 2 year guys and guys who you signed after year one who expire in year 3… The year is key… The end of the 2007 season is 2008. So 1 year contracts signed in 2007 are 2007-2008. 2 Year contracts are 2007-2009. If you sign a 2 year contract after the 2007 season, that contract is 2008-2010.

in this thread, it was discussed, particularly in posts 73 to 78.
that discussion came after the rules were sent, and that's what i went with.

is it possible to allow us to make some changes to our contracts since there was a misunderstanding? I thought it was max 2 5s and 2 4s, so that was how i sent it. I think i even said in the email I wish I could have 1 more guy for 4 years.

No where in that did I say "Max of 2 5 year guys."
Goatlocker said that, but he was incorrect...
Yes in Post 78 I said, "GL is correct, it's just giving us more flexibility than what WPFB did... I think" however I was ONLY referring to Post 77 where GL says "The key is 25 Players total, 50 contract years max, at least 12 expiring contracts each year."
The rules as stated in the NBBL Rules.doc is what you should of gone by this entire time, that's why it was sent out to everyone, and when I did the revisions it was sent out again. I NEVER changed the Contracts part of the Rules... So there was no reason to believe otherwise.
Simply put, GL isn't the commish, so when he says "max of 2 years" it means nothing, no offense to him. Unless it is added officially to the rules, and it has never been added to the rules, you have to go by the document which was sent out.
However, I am reasonable and I can see how you could be confused, even though it's clear that majority of the league understood that the rules as stated in the doc were the rules.
You have until Saturday at midnight EST to get your contracts to me VIA email. If it is in my inbox 1 minute late, im keeping the ones you have currently I will be sending out a league wide email... dicussing these rules.
also adding a penalty for late contracts and late moves and such. Please look for that in the rules.

Thanks guys.
I gotta take some stance on things, if I'm too flimsey then the league will be run like crap. I just wish I'd come up with the penalty of Dollas for late days before this season so that Fosten would of felt compelled to get his contracts in on time. But that's ok, if they aren't in to me By Saturday night, he loses opening day.

I dont know if there is anything that we can do, but it does seem alittle unfair to have him forfeit opening day. All that is really doing is giving whoever he plays 10 free wins and a commanding lead for the start of the season. Maybe a stricter dolla penalty, or something like that would be a better option. Or maybe he should just send his contracts.
Ohhh, What if we just assign all his players to 1 year deals if they arent in by sat. you cant assume who would get better contracts then others.

|
110 | Matt G
ID: 561039520 Sun, Apr 01, 2007, 20:12

no, read the rules.
Picking up players for a DL movement is 1 dolla.
If when the player you put on the dl comes back you drop the player you picked up there is no charge for that.
There are NO free moves...
|
111 | Matt G
ID: 561039520 Sun, Apr 01, 2007, 20:18

Here is the DL explanation right from the rules.
DL: 1 Dolla, you can pick up a player with this move, HOWEVER when player comes off DL in MLB, if you drop the player you picked up, it is at no cost. If you drop the player you DLd you must pay 2 dollas per contract year to buy him out… It is only 1 bone for that same year if after June 1. If you drop a 3rd player you must pay 1 dolla to complete the original DL move and buy the contract out of player 3. You can also put another player on the DL and keep the first two players for 1 dolla. In this case, the player that you originally picked up is still counted as the pickup and if you drop him after all said and done, there is no additional penalty. All DL and Roster Moves must be reported to the Commish VIA email for Contract and Roster validation purposes.
