0 Subject: Gurupie 20 2007 Draft Discussion

Posted by: Ref
- Donor [539581218] Thu, Mar 15, 2007, 22:19

The draft thread is now open. We will use this thread throughout the draft.

Please do not mention players who are eligible to be drafted.

Please only post draft picks in the draft thread and all other comments here. If there is a traded draft pick, a commish will post that in the draft thread as a way to update the posted draft chart.

If you wish to trade a draft pick, it is still necessary to have a commish approve your trade, but it is not necessary to propose/accept on CBS site during the draft--though you are still welcome to do that. All trades need confirmation so we can be sure terms are understood and aggreeable (email to all commishs is fine as well). If a commish is not around and you are sure the trade will go through, you can ask that manager to pick for you and that pick will be traded once approved or you may wait, but it must be approved before the pick is made by someone else.

During the untimed period (until Sunday at Noon, ET, research and develop your strategy. If you need time, then take it. But once we start the timed draft, you really need to have an idea of what you are doing BEFORE it reaches your turn so we may keep on pace.

The commishs will be closely monitoring the pace of the draft and if need be will adjust clocks accordingly. The c clock will be posted here approx. every round.

In case anyone has been looking at the free agents, please note that Brian Giles and James Shields are no longer available. The Keeper thread is the official list of keepers. Trip apparently mismarked two of his players on CBS. When I compared the two, I found two differences and made his CBS team mirror his post in the Keeper thread. Therefore Matt Murton and Marcus Giles are now available to be drafted.

It looks like a mistake.....after I emailed him, GO and PD that they were the next 3 up, Trip emailed back asking why Murton was still on his team. He said he has his pick ready but probably wanted to see Ref's resolution above first.

Yeah, I emailed him today just in case you forgot since you are on the road and he replied to me with that. Wish he would have let me know yesterday as I was up until long after Species picked. I didn't bother comparing checked boxes to keepers list--just the total number. Looks like Trip was saved by our Keeper thread.

Don't forget to pick up your own players in CBS. If people start forgetting, there is a good chance duplicate picks will be made.

No worries PD. I know we're going to be in a hurry, but don't want people to unnec. rush right now. We usually give people a couple days to look at dropped players and research and then expect them to be ready when the timed draft starts and their turn comes up. Obviously with so few players and so many managers, stuff happens unexpectedly that might throw you off at times by the time it gets to your turn, but it's all good.

My unofficial goal was to get through at least one round before Sunday at Noon, but judging by the first few picks, perhaps we can get through as many as two rounds--though do not want anyone to feel pressured to hurry right now. There will be plenty of time for that later! ;) I'm pretty sure we will slow way down later today and tomorrow.

Of all the positions/cats I need right now, I went with a SP. After last year's fiasco of high ERA/WHIP and being unable to keep a couple of top SPs, I decided that I'd try and get off to a bett start in those cats this year. Though the Reds seem to have downgraded their team and will prob. cost Arroyo some wins.

Maybe we will only get through one round afterall. If it doesn't get to me by tomorrow morning, I'll try and come up with a Q. Just not much time and I only have a few mins right now to assess things. Will be back tomorrow evening though.

FYI - in regards to my 2.03 pick, I will be out of pocket from roughly 11:30am PT to 4:30pm PT.

Was fascinated to see where Barry Bonds would go. I couldn't stomach taking him with one of my picks, but before making the trade with mbj I would have seriously considered him at 1.17. I guess now that he's gone I don't have as much "trader's remorse".

I had it narrowed down to Bonds, Cuddyer, and Chavez. Since I already had 2 OF keepers, it made the choice much easier.

I didn't enjoy cutting Bonds. I would have liked to keep him around (or at least trade him for something more than nothing).

I was torn between a safe pick with Cuddyer, or go big and pray with Bonds. mbj made my choice easier, though I anticipate I would've gambled anyway. I have a shot this year, but my offense isn't as powerful as it had been in '04 and '05, so the gamble makes sense. I'm just hoping for a 80/20/80/.450 season. Anything else would be gravy.

Some of the emails were alerting me to the fact that Toral posted in Politics Forum that he may have to drop out of our league. I followed the link and read this:

Toral

Fri, Mar 16, 2007, 17:48 nerve I am fine. Just extremely busy and next week could be the same, worse, or the pressure could be off. My concern is that a long queue could run out and I would be unable to take time to draft for another couple days and then the league might feel it has to do something.

SZ I will leave that up to the league. I would prefer not to leave. I may be dropping G20 as well so there may be no enthusiastic applicants there.

Just took time to type this while my projections were printing out. See you again after I'm able to pick.

Toral

We have interviewed candidates for our "waiting list." There has never seemed to be a shortage for this league or our G24 Football league. So it's not that we don't have a manager ready to go, but Toral has not made any contact to tell us that he can't continue. We will do all we can to keep him, but we are under a tight deadline and need to hear from him.

I am planning to go ahead with the G20 draft, though I won't make my pick until tomorrow. I should be able to keep up for a few days at least, but it's possible that I may just be overwhelmed by the middle of next week and have to drop. It might be prudent to have an emergency placement ready to go. Sorry I can't be more definite right now; I'm going to try to keep up with the draft but unavoidable time contraints may overwhelm me. I can't make a definite assessment of my time situation next week.

Perhaps a draft helper? I think it would be a waste to have to drop out of G20 just due to time constraints at draft time. Maybe we can find someone to help in the event you can't find time to make a pick? They might not make the best pick from your POV, but better then losing you as a manager.

Toral, if it would help, we can assign the person who is #1 on our waiting list to co-run your team to help you draft. Then if you can't continue, he's already familliar with it and if you can, then at least he's familliar with the league in case we need him during the season--much like GO did last year was with GL before taking over another team later.

(I will email this as well).

33 That's an interesting idea, but quite a pain in the butt for that person. The time waster is marking keepers off some list of ranked projections or cheat sheet. I do this manually. The helper would have to catch up on this, and keep up with marking off draft picks, on the chance that I have to give up. Not a job I would want.

well that's why we pick up our own players so available players appear in CBS. I don't mark off players like that. This manager seems pretty good and everyone I have talked to say he's solid. I have emailed him explaining the situation. He does need some time to research, get acquainted with our legaue and if you're around talk to you a few mins so he can pick. One manager in our league said this guy is so good that they are afraid he will be too good, LOL. I'd rather he look at things then the possibility of you being skipped and losing players and draft position as well as hurting are very small window that we have this year.

Soon after I e-mail the next 3 pickers, I will send a short queue, covering my early 2nd round pick, to the managers picking before and after me and to anyone else who wants one. It's intended for use if that pick comes up tonight or tomorrow before noon. Tomorrow afternoon I should be able to pick for myself.

I had two strategies developed for the next 4 picks before not getting byrnes. I know byrnes is streaky, etc. but for the year as a whole I thought he would fit into what I was trying to do. When he went of the board and I bumped Helms up from this pick to the last pick, I couldn't figure out which way to go. I still reached, but at least I reached for what should be some steals. I still don't love the pick, but so many middling guys left, I felt he was less of a risk than many of the others I was looking at. This draft can be confusing. I think it's tougher here than it is later. So many guys could be huge and so many can stink their way off of your roster quickly.

Betemit could be a superb pick. I was so close to picking him but have been rooting so hard for nomar to o to 3B and Loney get the 1B gig (unlikely at this point) that I didn't want to blow this pick. I think Bet will start at 3rd and do fine.

When I was up I told Pete who his next pick was but I wasn't going to pick him. He was shocked I was actually right. I just think it's bad that I can figure out who others are taking but can't figure out my own guys!!!

Draft has been going very well. Even with the time out and the other picks over the :51 per pick avg we must make (it's actually less with q's not counted), we are still ahead of schedule. We got through over a round and a half today. Would liek to keep this pace up as we will surely slow down this weekend.

Actually the :51 min per pick is assuming 12 hrs for everyone. When in fact it's closer to 9 hrs each max minus qs (about 40 mins/pick). Still we're ahead of schedule.

I should be around for part of the day but not continuously. Just realized that after this next pick I don't pick for almost 4 rounds. Giving that 7th rounder bck to GL is going to really smart. Not to mention some of those ill-advised trades I made last year. But no regrets.

I have Yokel's Q and if I can't be around, I will fwd it on to someone else. Had darky's and Toral's Q but wasn't around when their pick came up.

Added a second table which shows our picks per round. Basically wanted to document how we did as a group per round. We've obviously sped up the past couple of rounds, even with the miscommunication of me and Gl with my Q and the couple long picks plus bmd who is approaching two hours right now as we are hitting the freeze.

I left most of the other stuff so it wouldn't affect the top chart and I could post them together. The avg on the right side of the charts are all dependent on the completion of the draft. So they can only go upwards.

As far as the c clock goes, only bmd is in real trouble of timing out of the draft. He will go pink after his next pick which means he has between 3 and 6 hours left. Seven people have less than an hour of cumulative time used. We'e only had one time out (though one was a minute shy). We are still on pace to finish on time. Still concerned about the inevitable weekend slowdown, but if we keep up the pace of the last two days, that won't be a problem. The commishs are very happy with how the draft has gone pace-wise. Thanks!

Guru is just one of several guys who is haveing a sensation draft by my estimation. One reason Guru's is standing out in particular is in the way he's been all too happy to pick up the guys I looked at hard. Betemit and Bailey and even Gomes. I passed on Gomes mainly because he was DH elig. and I have Hafner. He wasn't very good last year either. Betemit I'm already regretting as he's gotten a lot better this Spring and Loney's going to start off in the minors. Bailey I just didn't know. Weak team and hitters park. Even though he has more upside than O. Perez, I took the pitcher's park, good team and Ks. May regret it afterall!

Guys are just not falling as I'd hoped. Even guys that I thought might be a reach at my next pick are still going before it gets to me. Now 85 picks away, I should prob. quit trying to figure things out until it gets closer to me!

I'm hoping Bailey gets called up this year, sooner than later. Frankly, I expected to see him as someone's prospect already. I would probably have taken him in last year's prospect draft, but I didn't have any picks.

Regardless, it's painfully clear to me that I'm doomed to perpetual mediocrity unless I pay more attention to the future.

FWIW ref, one reason I was comfortable spending a 6th rounder on Bailey is that you traded an extra 4th and 6th rounder to me last year. ;-)

Re: Gomes. I'm hopeful he eventually gets OF eligibility, but can use him at DH if not. I'll confess I didn't realize he was only available at DH when I drafted him (although I noticed that as soon as I went to pick him up.) That probably wouldn't have changed my pick anyway. And maybe that's why he had slipped that far.

Food for thought: I'm not totally committed to keeping Podsednik long term. When I bring up Quentin, I'll have too many outfielders, and Pods is my only base stealer. I might be better off sacrificing that category. If I were to move him, I'd probably want a keeper-quality pitcher (or prospects) in return, and I'm not chomping at the bit to make a move now. (In fact, I might be more interested in dealing him after the ASB, especially if prospects are involved.) But for those who might be looking for more steals, consider him as potentially available.

Even though it's a pain for us, putting the prospects on indiv. teams sure helps me. Bailey isn't the only guy I thought was a prospect until checking the CBS FAs. Haven't grabbed one yet, but at least allowed me to consider them.

#126 - lucky? Wilson was at the top of my queue, so I had to settle for Neshek.

This draft has caught me off guard. I had no idea MR was going to go at such a premium! Now the Broxton's, Linebrinks and Shields level guys I can understand, but the extent in which setup guys have gone in this draft has thrown me for a complete loop.

....and drafting for this year sure takes a lot of the FUN out of this for me! I'd much rather draft these young studs with potential than boring guys like Cameron and Roberts! It pains me to see the Luke Scotts of the world go right before my eyes while I have to fill relief spots. Arrrrrgh.

Draft pick trade announcement
darkside gets:
6.18 and 8.10

Guru gets:
7.03 and 7.18

Guru is allowing me to make this contingent on myboyjack not taking the guy I'm targeting (which I think is unlikely). Since Guru is being kind enough to allow for this possibility, could the official timekeeper charge any elapsed time between 6.17 and 6.18 to my pick 4 and cumulative clock?

Thanks, Guru and Ref!

I probably didn't need to trade up, but when I saw rotowire's blurb on Baldelli going down w/ Dukes replacing him in center (along w/ the fact that it looks like Dukes will have a good shot at making the team as a 4th OF'er), I decided to play it safe and try to get him soon.

I had heard long ago that they were going to put Dukes on the team this year. He is a major head case that is always in trouble but I hear he has more talent than some of the guys we're hearing a lot about--possibly more than his teammate Delmon Young.

If you planned on waiting, he wouldn't have been there.

I followed Dukes last year intently as I was looking to draft him as a prospect. Scared me away but like what I've read about him over the winter as far as that the DRays are going to give him every opportunity. I like the pick. He wasn't on my radar but that's just because I had forgotten about him. One of the disadvantages of using a bunch of cheat sheets with everything organized and crossing names off, etc. Now just 3 more rounds before I can pick. Funny that when I approved the trade I realized that was my draft spot that I had traded away.

PD times out at 10:03 ET. Cards said he posted in another thread that he was out for the night, so I'm hoping he gets back before timing out but with that info I think it's unlikely.

We have a situation behind the scenes that we are trying to deal with. Hopefully we can come up with a resolution soon as it only applies to two managers.

We're still ahead of schedule. The last two full rounds of each counted 10:16 against the clock. Had some slow downs but all in all we're still in excellent shape.

Six managers still have used less than an hour of their clock. Two managers though are in trouble of timing out of the draft at their current pace. bmd has 3:32 left for his final 7 pcks (about 30 mins/pick) while PD has 4 hrs over his last 9 picks (about 26 mins/pick). Many are around for qs if anyone needs them.

At our current pace, we'd have to have a major slowdown in order for us to alter the per pick clock rate. But if we do, we may have to take time off the c clock. Something we really don't want to do and could hurt the managers with short clock even more. I think we're going to be fine though. This has been a very good draft as far as the quality and timliness for the most part. GL, bj21 and Darkside are in the lead for the least used clock thus far. Long way to go though.

We have an unprecedented issue (can we just blame it on the new commish? ;)).

One of the traded draft picks didn't show up in the chart and we were not notified about it until today after one of the picks was already made.

The pick in question was:
8-27 Twarpy gets Pete's 4th rounder for his 8th

There are three options to figure this out.
1. give glavine to twarpy and pick 8.14 to pete
2. Do nothing as Twarpy didn't catch this before pick 4.19
3. Do something in between to be fair to both parties and the league who was affected by Pete's added players last year

The opinion is that it is unfair to take away a player this late after it has been picked that alters draft strategy. Also unfair that Pete benefitted last year and doesn't have to give up the 4th he agreed to. Unfair that twarpy doesn't get a 4th. But he shares in the blame for not catching it sooner.

Decision: Twarpy get's Pete's 7.19 and 8.19 this year for twarpy's 13.14 and 14.14 with an option to change the 8.19 for 13.14 this year to next year's 7th for 14th rounders. So basically, unless both agree to do the 7th for 14th next year in lieu of the 8th for 13th, then it stands. The thinking is that a simple 7th for 14th isn't enough to mitigate the 4th rounder. And because it was agreed that it was for a pick this year, we didn't agree that the 4th for 8th should carry onto next year.

We all feel we have some fault in this issue so hopefully the happy medium is as fair to both parties and to the league as it can be.

So basically the trade is now:

Pete gets 4.19, 13.14 and 14.14
Twarpy gets 7.19, 8.14 and 8.19

I'd also like to add that we talked to both pete and twarpy separately and they were both willing to do whatever we decided. Pete even offered to forfeit glavine to twarpy. twarpy refused that saying it wasn't fair (and we agreed) and even offered to wait until next year. After we told Twarpy what we were leaning toward doing he was ok with it. Obviously it's not the best situation for him (or us) but it helps that both parties were so willing to go along with whatever we decided.

After he got Orvella he asked my opinion on him and said he was the future. But I do see what he's doing. He's handcuffing the closers. Solomon and Capps from Pit. Orvella, McClung and Reyes from TB. Of all teams to handcuff closers though!

Trip I got it, thanks for asking. Have gotten qs before where they didn't even know if I was going to be here or not. Better than no leaving a q but I'd say if you don't ahve time to ask, send it to multiple people. I am going to be here for a little while then will be gone for at least a couple hours--maybe more.

I told Pete that we were giving Twarpy his pick 8.19 and not 8.11 where he traded for someone else's pick because that's what would have happened if they simply traded a 7th and an 8th and didn't specify differently. So we at least discussed that he still had 8.11 so not sure if he forgot or not, but I suspect he wasn't prepared for how fast the draft went today and didn't think it would get back to him after the slowdown yesterday at this time. He is showing as active on AIM, but I'm guessing it may be one of his roommates as he went idle at 12:30 ET. Typically he gets back around 5:00 ET from class or at least on some days.

What I find troubling are some of the guys I had high on my list are still there!!! Troubling because I htink I may be screwing the pooch. Other guys who I had pegged as later round sleepers are starting to fly off the board now. I was hoping they'd be back after my 85 pick hiatus. Still plenty of servicable scrubs to choose from though! ;)

Sure wish I had the news on Boston's closer situation now rather than a few days ago when I made my 1.18 pick. Hate wasting a first round pick!

Yeah that should be a good reminder for all of us to update our emails on teh G20 site to what email we want. I have everyone's email in my gmail account so i can just type in a couple letters and it comes up. Perhaps he is using yahoo, but I only have his gmail in mine. Once everyone checks and updates, I need to compare my address book with that. Others do too as I still get some emails to my Yahoo account that went down for 3 weeks last year and forced me into gmail. I don't use Yahoo anymore and only check it when the email inbox catches my eye on my home page.

I really like gmail as it has the converstation format which is unique and it has a chat feature embedded in the email which is nice.

Things are not coming together for this draft. Looks like I may need to deal one of my keepers to shore up some very week areas. Maybe Brian Roberts or even one of my draft picks? I don't know just thinking out loud here.

Yeah, I just hate for people to time out. That's why we made it for 12 hrs even though we could only avg around 9--just relying on others not to use as much time. Still everyone knows the deal and plenty of resources for Qs. Even with Pete missing his time slot we still have had a really fast day today. Way ahead of schedule heading into the daunting weekend slowdown.

A superb day. Looks like all of this worry about getting done on time was for nothing as we are looking to finish early with another strong day. Pete is almost always on top of things so his time out and his AWOL for the current pick is odd, but it's no sweat.

Double check your teams to see if you have all of your players. I started to do some initial groundwork to figure out who I am going to take (since it has been so long since my last pick) and ran into at least one player that I knew was gone so I added him to the respective team. That could cause some major issues if you don't pick up your own player and someone else nabs him.

Correct, but my point is that if say I choose a guy already picked and pick him up and take off and no one catches it (or right away) then I am screwed. I'd get to re-pick when it is found but am essentially skipped for that pick. It's a good idea to check the draft thread first, but just saying that mistake shouldn't happen if we remember to pick up our players when possible.

I've gotten a few e-mails about trading picks, and just thought I'd post about them here since they all follow the same idea.

Trading picks for next year's picks seems to be a popular new trend, but I'm not interested in sacrificing next year for the late rounds of this year. I'll do something like my 13th round pick to a team who's got two 14th rounders and doesn't need both, or a 12th for a 13th and 14th, etc. like in past years, but this next-year stuff is getting crazy. ;)

My internet connection went down last night and came up right before I picked for Code. Obviously it is up now but not sure if it is fixed or is still intermittent like it has been the past couple days.

I must have been the only one code queued up but I highly recommend anyone sending me a q to also cc it to at least one other person. I have a few in my inbox right now and I still need to go figure out who I am going to pick as my top picks are being snatched again.

Punto really helped me for awhile last year off the wire but faded down the stretch. With a full year, he has the potential to help you in steals, runs and obp. But then again, it seemed like he couldn't buy a hit late in the year.

PD is up, but will time out shortly after he gets home or before if it is after 7:30.

Will continue to check every so often.

Back to work.

Make sure you are aware of the c clock of the manager who is picking in front of you. PD and R9 are both under three hours and have mulitple picks left. Others may go under at some point. I'll try and keep this as updated as I can but again, it's ultimately your responsibility to know when you are on the clock.

Sorry about that Code Cracker. I just went back and looked and see that you had two different queues for each of the two picks. I failed to scroll down and didn't notice that. Your correction is approved since it was my fault and Erstad was the top player for your round 12.09 pick. I have the email if anyone needs verification.

OK, we have a resolution.

Two issues:
1. The corrected pick for Code, might be unprecedented, but it's the right thing to do. I saw the Q and code was VERY specific of the list he wanted for each guy and Cards simply took the #2 guy on the first pick instead of the #1 guy for pick 12.08. Once we figured out what actually happened, I think we're all ok with it.

2. Huge misunderstanding of the rules. By rule, once your team is filled, your draft is over. Albeit, you may trade any remaining picks you still own until they come up. Once they come up, they are skipped. The pick doesn't officially exist anymore. Apparently the rules and the directions in the initial post wasn't clear on this as Code, GL and even Cards were thinking that the pick was still good until the next person picked.

Because of the confusion that even a commish didn't understand/forgot and approved the trade, we are NOT going to overturn it. However, going forward, you MUST trade an extra pick before the pick before it has been made or it will be skipped and no longer be an asset that can be traded.

Now back to the draft and I'm up... ;)

I just got online this morning. It has been crazy. Funny that I got online just before I got an email that mbj was up and I was checking email right then. I had his q and I was up after him. But now that I'm checking the thread and teh c clock realized that twarpy was skipped and he shouldn't have been because that's peter n's pick at 13.14. He times out at 12:11 ET which is in about 20 mins. Then R9 has 1:30 left on his c clock to pick. If neither of them pick in time then Pete will be skipped again at 13.19 by rule (since he would not have made his 13.14 pick) and PD will be on the clock at 13.20.

So there may need to be some re-picks. Want to be fair to everyone based on our established protocals.

LOL Pete! 13.19 isn't up yet!

OK Pete picked at 12:06 so R9 has 1:30 on his c clock left and would time out at 1:36. If R9 doesn't choose one of the guys picked out of order or is skipped, PD will be on the clock as soon as R9 pick or 1:36 arrives, whichever is first. If he takes one of the guys picked out of order that manager's turn would come up again and his clock would start. R9 would need to email that manager and everyone behind him.

I'll post the clock as soon as possible after the round ends. Will have to catch up after R9 picks/times out. The only other traded pick I see is 14.14 that belongs to Pete but he will be passing that pick unless he can trade it before 14.13 picks. Doubt that it happens. So the chart should help everyone figure out what is up (including me).

Yeah the way I see it, our picks now are likely the first ones to be sacrificed, so I wasn't worrying a whole lot about my last one.

As far as R9's last pick goes at 14.15, as soon as Tosh picks at 14.13 (Pete is forfeiting his 14.14 as of now), AA will be on the clock at 14.16, however R9 is eligible to make his pick, he is just skipped.

No, after you pick, R9 is skipped at 14.15. Actually AA won't need 14.16 as he's done so mbj will be on the clock after Tosh makes his 14.13 pick. Toral is still on the clock right now and doesn't time out until like 5:04 or something like that.

The last two picks have been killers for me. The draft stalled one short of me two nights in a row, and my turn started at 4:15am and 4:41am. I was able to make my pick this morning only because I fell asleep in the Lazy-Boy, and was on the clock when I woke up at 6am.

Yeah our draft can get really confusing because:

1. All the traded picks messes up all the original slots
2. Traded picks after the grid is made that people forget about
3. People having too many/not enough picks
4. The time element we use for the courtesy of all involved and the motivation to pick/Q to keep the draft moving

Even though we've slowed WAY down, we're still days ahead of our deadline. If we get done tomorrow and able to get everything set up so waivers can be turned on--that's still 3 days ahead or two days ahead of running waives two times for people to pick guys who were thrown away in the first WW run. Still only one game that first day, so for the most part you get an extra day yet.

We're adding players that we found that were forgotten to be picked up as a courtesy. If we miss anyone and you don't pick them up before we turn on waivers, you will lose your rights to those players.

As a Mariner fan, it looks like it might be a long season. Only 2 of their starting 5 pitchers were drafted ... and I took one of them.

Why no love for the Mariners? :-(
