11.01 Chad Tracy, 3B, AZ

Tracy was still available as I had hoped when I made my decision on Drew last time around. Tracy was everyone's darling last year but was a slight disappointment. That means he should have good value at this point as he projects well still with 90+ in the counting stats, a .350+ OBP and could touch .500 in SLG. He also fits in with my general strategy of being a low health risk, high upside agewise, pick. I took him over Beltre as I needed a slightly higher OBP and could take the hit in SLG. Youkilis and Overbay merited consideration as I needed a CI but Tracy gets the nod as the difference in OBP did not outweigh the difference in SLG.

11.02 Andy Pettitte, SP, NYY Wanting to add quality SP is becoming a stretch at this point in the draft, so the opperative word for SP now becomes experience. Pettitte had a tough start with Houston last year. In 2007 the NYY hitters should help him get out of the gate with a strong start. Run support is like a 5th pitch to the "mature" pitcher. He will keep it in the park, recruit the Rocket, get 170 K, 15 W with an ERA well under 4.00 and Whip @1.30.

11.07 Edwin Encarnacion, 3B, CIN, CIN

I needed a 3B and there were still some good option here as my pick approached. Youklis, Beltre, namely, and I thought about all 3 with this spot. Ultimately, rather than wait and have my choice narrowed down for me, I decided to take the guy I thought had the best potential. Encarnacion can mash. If his numbers were extended to a full season, he would be a much higher pick. I’m counting on a full season and even some improvement, as he’s still very young and has room to grow. Lastly, he should steal a few more bases than Youklis. Not much mind you, but every little difference counts when trying to gain points in that cat.

11.08 Josh Willingham, OF, FLA I was looking for the best hitter available with this pick. I didn't feel a need to get a catcher yet, because there hadn't been a run on them yet. Willingham put up decent numbers his rookie season. I expect his power numbers to improve some this year, and other numbers to at least remain the same.

11.09 Ervin Santana, SP, LAA,

Well the hits just keep on coming. I had been targeting Edwin Encarnicion in all my mixed drafts, because of some very optimistic projections I have for him. Like Uptown said in his rationale, he’s a masher playing home games in the Great American launching pad. So instead I picked…….

The other Santana has been a fantasy baseball favorite of mine since his rookie season in 2005. Very consistent at home, 19-5 lifetime with .310 and 1.14 peripherals, he’s actually improved on the road every year. Overall, I’ll expect 14-16 wins, about a 4.00 ERA and about 150 Ks. With a 1350 IP limit in this league, I won’t hesitate to sit him in certain road games especially in stadiums where he’s struggled in the past.

Watch this plan blow up in my face. I’m sure I’ll find a way to outthink myself using this strategy.

11.11 Josh Beckett, SP, BOS I feel much better about this pick than the last one. I was looking at SP or OF with this pick. With Patterson, Ordonez, Ibanez, and Bonds all coming off the board, i decided to grab what i felt was the best SP available. Im counting on 15+ wins, and hoping for a return to form with around 1k/inning, and a respectable ERA and WHIP. Even if the ratios dont come back down to pre-boston levels (hard to expect in the AL East), i still like Beckett as my #3 SP.

11.12 Jhonny Peralta SS, CLE I got a chance to make a new queue just after the 10/11 turn. With 9 picks before mine, I created a queue with Bonds, Ibanez, Kearns, and Overbay at the top (looking for SLG help). Peralta was next followed by others that you'll read about in my 12.05 rationale. He didn't fit the mold for SLG help, but I figured if all the others were gone, I'd get my 3rd MI and be done with that tough area. I believe last year's decline was nothing more than a sophomore slump and he will put up numbers closer to his rookie season

11.13 Brad Hawpe, OF, COL I'm thinking at this point that I should probably get another closer, and then I come across Hawpe. My sources are wildly in disagreement about what kind of year he will have (from the sanguine 590 AB, 180 R/RBI, .890 OPS to the melancholic 450 AB, 135 R/RBI, .855 OPS). The one consistent factor was an OPS in the mid to high .800. I'll take a chance on the optimistic side--insurance in case young Mr. Young goes on another forced sabbatical.

11.14 Kevin Youkilis, 1B, 3B, OF, Bos I was thinking pitching here, but the guys that I wanted went not too long before me. So I decided to go with “The Greek God of Walks”, even though he is Jewish. That is precisely why I picked him. I wanted someone on my team who can get me 100 BB. He scored 100 runs last year too. I read that he might hit 2nd, so he should cross the plate a lot this year also.

11.16 Russel Martin, C, LAD YES! I now have 100% of French Canadian in the league! I humbly admit I reached here, but I don¡¦t think he would have been here 32 picks from now. I like the upside he gives me. Anything above last years # will be bonus... 65R, 65 RBI, 10 SB, 0.360, 0.440 I considered some SP and few RP¡¦s here... 12.01 Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, LAD Whatever, Nomar is too fragile to be consider a stud... he is nothing else than a bonus. 12.03 John Patterson, SP, Wash

I hope I didn't take my 2nd SP too late. John Patterson could be a risky pick, but reports are that he feels great. If he is healthy, he could get me 200 K's and a low ERA. He plays on a terrible team, so I am not counting on wins from him, but with run support, who knows.

12.04 Chris Capuano, SP, MIL

OK, first: Capuano is from Massachusetts, where I grew up (though I was born in Rhode Island). That should be enough right there. But add to it, he is devestating against lefties, has improved his walk rate from year to year, and seems poised to have a decent 12/13 win season. His ERA will be higher than I'd like, but Miller Park suits him well, and he should keep his Whip at a reasonable 1.25-1.3 while throwing over 200 innings.

While Markakis doesn't fit with the mold of the extablished player that I usually prefer in the first half of a draft, I like his potential, I think he'll get a shot to play every day, and . . . well . . . he's an Oriole -- so now I've got 2 homers to root for!!

12.06 Kenji Johjima, C, SEA With Martin and Barrett coming off the board, i thought this might be the beginning of the C run. Turns out i was wrong, since no more catchers were taken for almost 3 rounds. I felt that this was a decent place to take a C, not too early in my mind, and I had my pick off all but the elite. Johjima took a slight edge over a few others that remain undrafted.

12.08 Solomon Torres, RP, Pitt For several reasons, I don’t like this pick. First off, I needed another closer if I didn’t want to punt saves. Now I’m reading that Torres may need too much work to be the closer. He’ll do better as the setup guy, so he can appear in another 90 games again this year. And then TD grabs the guy that I really liked and should have picked. Made me sick picking him for TD from his Q. Finally, Cabrera, Francoeur, Byrnes, Jackson, and Hudson all flew off my Q with subsequent picks in round 12. But Broxton hurt the most. I really thought he might last 4 or 5 more rounds. I was looking for him as the steal of the draft at 16 or 17, as he’s got tons of potential, as I believe that he’ll unseat Saito eventually early this year.

12.09 Jonathan Broxton, RP, LAD I had targeted taking Broxton with this pick for the last several rounds. The earliest he was picked in other RIBC drafts was at the end of the 12th round, so I thought safe waiting to get him here. He is the setup man for my Saito who I also have. He is the Dodgers closer of the future, so if anything happens to Saito, Broxton will close. Broxton will get about 100 Ks, has an excellent ERA, and a very good WHIP. He will also get a few wins if he does not end up closing.

12.10 Orlando Cabrera, SS ANA

Left a queue for this pick with three pitchers at the top (Capuano, Patterson, and Olsen). I was really hoping to get one of those here. Sadly, it seems I am destined not to have a Patterson on my team this year. Cabrera was a few spots down as far as the hitters go, with Martin and Markakis being my first choices. Nevertheless, I like Cabrera. I see no reason to expect a dropoff in his production. He fills out my MI with a lot of these picks still needing to come off the board. I’m happy to grab him here before it becomes futile. Also, he helps me steals.

12.15 Connor Jackson, 1B, ARZ Jackson could be a stretch here, but he also could be a huge bargain if the peach fuzz Diamondbacks can duplicate hiotting in the majors as they did in the minors. A great swing, good eye translates to a .400 OBP, but lack of power will keep his SLUG to the low .400's. The 3rd slot in the batting order may generate RBI and R between 80 and 120. The real number is likely to be in the high 80's, but break out potential makes this CI pick a possible steal (or not).

12.16 Orlando Hudson, 2B, AZ

These picks became total value picks as three players fell into my lap as it were: Hudson was one, though he is more of my sleeper, see below, Brian Giles, who was an 8th rounder in another draft and finally Adrian Beltre who we all hate apparently, but has been the "undrafted" in my last 4 rationales. As Beltre and Hudson fill out my infield, I chose them over Giles (who I really like - finally taken at 13.16 by a very happy Hubble). I could have easily taken two SP here, or even a third closer. I may really regret it but the hitters are too much of a great value at this point in the draft.

So Hudson first: One key cog to my strategy was getting Freel in the 9th round. Didn't happen, which forced my hand with the Roberts pick. As I looked at other drafts, I though I could nab Orlando Hudson at 14.16. But to my dismay, he started going higher and higher with each later draft - people were finding out that you might get Cano stats 7 rounds later with this guy. As my next pick is 14.16, and just about everyone needs at least one more MI, I though I just had to bite the bullet and take him a little early. He projects quite well at over 100 runs, 70 rbi, a dozen steals, .360+/.450+. There are only a few other MI's who are even close, in fact only 5 who are even half as valuable left. I now have three IF who could have career years. Hope springs eternal.

13.01 Adrian Beltre, 3B, SEA

I hate Beltre and I don't even really know why. I don't even think I've ever owned him. So what gives? Beats me. He will hurt the OBP and I will be lucky to get him over .335, but he could be one of the few .525+ slg guys left, he will get his runs and rbi, and a dozen steals. He was twice as valuable as any CI left after Conor Jackson was taken by Taxman. I just hit the button and I already regret it but oh well. It all worked out OK as I still got Reyes and Dempster, my 1st and 3rd choices for pitchers, and only Snell was snagged before I could get him.

It was time to add another pitcher, preferably with a good K rate. As the pick approached, I targeted Wainwright, who has been pitching well this spring, and also provided some protection for Izzy (perhaps). With Wainwright gone, Vazquez was my second choice. While his ERA isn’t great, his WHIP is respectable and his K’s were much needed for my staff. He should get 12 wins or so at least, anything more would be great.

Kind of a risk/reward pick here. Most everyone assumes that Clemens will be pitching this year. And the short list of possible teams leaves plenty of reason for optimism. If i get 20 starts out of him, i think he is well worth the 13th round pick. He should b top tier in ratios, and very good in wins and strikeouts.

I was also considering Chris Duncan here, but thought that he may make it back to me for the 14th round. He ended up going just 4 picks later.

You guys finally slowed down enough so I could breathe and see what happened with the queue picks!
After updating all the picks made, I couldn't help but wonder if I missed Marcus . . . nope, his name is on the queue of available players. I've already got 3 MIs, but at round 13, he could be a steal. I love that he's playing with his brother this year -- that should keep him loose and make it much easier to return to his old form. 100 runs and 20 steals are the key numbers I'm looking for.

I also considered Chris Duncan and brother Brian with this pick, but with waaaazup_guy having 2 picks before my next one and not having a 2B, I figure this was my last chance for Marcus . . . maaaaaybe Duncan will slide just a bit.

With the exception of Victor Martinez, whom I plan to put behind the plate anyway, I had no one eligible to play 1st base through 12 rounds. So, I decided it was time, and it came down to Jacobs, Kotchman, or Shealy. I selected Jacobs on the strength of his slugging (upwards of .480) and his potential to drive in a few runs. Not much more than that.

I decided to go back to back pitcher here, even though I now kinda regret it. There was a player I was interested in that I figured would drop to me in round 14. You can read about that in my round 14 rationale. Millwood is the staff ace in Texas. His K’s were over 150 since his Atlanta days, so I expect that to be the same this year. He should also be good for about 15 wins. It would be nice if he could return to form where he was competing for the ERA crown. In my books, a solid #3 pitcher.

14.05 Armando Benitez RP, SF Of course, Duncan didn't slide -- and he was taken by waaaazup_guy who needs a 2B! I went with Benitez here because I happened to read an article the night before this pick that indicated he was throwing well, has pitched 3 innings of no hit ball, and was being scouted by the Marlins. If he's throwing well and his knee is healthy, I like his chances of getting 35+ saves in either bullpen. This is my 3rd reliever and I only have 2 starters, so starting pitching was analyzed closely. I figured that a good starter will come back to me next round -- a potential 30+ save guy will not.

14.08 Bartolo Colon, SP, LAA A huge gamble here. He opted for rehab on his torn rotator cuff instead of surgery. Says he’s feeling fine, right now, though he looks like he will miss the first month of the season, regardless. He’s in the last year of his contract, so motivation shouldn’t be a problem. But if surgery is eventually required, this was a wasted pick. My strategy, unlike most, seems to be drafting more risky players and I’m not feeling particularly lucky. We’ll see what happens. Drafting is only part of playing this game. Fortunately, I think I’m a better manager during the season, than I am a drafter.

After my last pick, I knew I wanted to add an OF this round. I was also searching for a source of steals. I singled out Podsednik and researched him a bit. I knew he was dropping in people’s rankings because of the harm he does to OPS. The trade-off is his steals, obviously. But his hernia injury made him drop even further this year, as there was no assurance he would be ready for the start of the season and be running as he did previously. As I searched for news on him, I learned that he made his first appearance in a game yesterday (Friday) and played quite well, showing no signs of being slowed down. Guillen even said that he would consider using him on opening day if he continued to make progress. I did some quick and completely unscientific calculations and decided my team could withstand the hit on OPS. If Pods plays up to last years’ standard, I’ll be happy. His 40 steals bring me pretty close to my pre-draft target. Perhaps he will return to the 50+ SB level if he as healthy as he says is he. Anyway, at this point it was certainly worth the pick.

14.13 Freddy Garcia SP PHI I was looking to round out my pitching staff with one or two proven starters. The two I was looking at were Garcia and Contreras, why I don't know. I went with Garcia mainly because he has something to prove after last yeay and this is a contract year.

14.15 Kenny Lofton, OF, Tex If you are going to have steals, you must pick them up during the draft, you are not going to find them lying around on the waiver wire. At least, that is the premise I have determined for my RIBC International draft planning. Top steals guy remaining on the board I believe to be the ageless wonder signed by the (st)Rangers to play CF against RHP and sit against lefties. His OBP will run around .360 while he picks up 35 steals and 80 Runs. His Rbi's will be less than 40 and his SLUG will be just above .400. He will help in R and SB, neutral in OBP and suck in the other two categories. Necessary pick, but not necessarily a good pick.

14.16 Ryan Dempster, C-loser, CHC

Pitching, Pitching, Pitching. I knew that pitchers had to be my target after passing on them last round and having a few of my targets disappear. The only position player I would have taken here was B. Giles had he somehow fallen to me. Other than that, I was looking at pitchers, with a fallback option of Hermida (damn!).

Am I fickle? I may be. A favorable article about Dempster was just on ESPN. Maybe I had that in the back of my mind as I made my latest Q. I had Dempster on the bottom somewhere and then moved him up. As I thought about his competition (yet to be drafted injury prone pitchers), he looked more solid than before. I hope he keep the job all year and can save 30+ games without killing me in the ratio's. With three closers, I hope to actaully compete in saves or have some chips at the trading deadline. Now competing in Wins is gonna be harder as I only have two SP. Which brings us to the next rationale...

15.01 Anthony Reyes, SP, STL

Reyes has been the best pitcher on my board for a bunch of rounds, since Harang/Schil et al was taken. My projections have him comparable to Haren, harang and a host of other pitchers taken much earlier. I have been surprised that he seems to have flow under the radar as he was on the national stage last fall but he has been drafted relatively low in every draft I have seen. I drafted him X3 last year and was ultimately disappointed that STL was stupid enough to keep Ponson. However, they were able to keep the youngsters innings down (under 170) and let him get some more seasoning. It worked out well for them but poorly for my fantasy teams. This year, he has a guaranteed spot, as high as #2, though I think Wainwright will be better. I worry about his stamina as he has never gotten to 200 innings before, and he is still a little young, at 25, but here's to 200 innings, 13+ wins, sub 4, sub 1.25 whip which would be a fantasy bargain in this round. I better get close to that or I will have a hard time competing as he is SP#3.

15.02 Paul La Duca, C NYM Gotta have a catcher, and not many proven commidities left on the board. La Duca will join my crew of don't hurt you bad players, however his SLUG number can be a problem.. I look for Lo Duca to put up numbers similar on the low side to Lofton w/o the steals. OBP @ .360, Slug @ 4.10 @ 70 runs and 40 RBI's. Less than 5 steals. Not much upside here.

15.04 Jose Contreras SP CWS The second of my two veteran pitchers. I was thinking of possibly Penny but I went with Contreras because it is already announced thathe will be the opening day starter and Penny isn't thus giving me the possibility of more starts.

15.07 Boof Bonser, SP, MIN A young pitcher with lots of potential for a breakout year. Boof has pitched well this spring after finishing up last year very strong. I expect him to be a solid contributor in all four pitching categories as a starter, but I am especially excited about his K rate and potential for high a win total. I like Boof better than my SP pick in round 13, Javier Vazquez, and with both of them, am starting to like my starting staff. Only other pitcher I considered was Chuck James, but like Boof better.

15.08 Dan Wheeler, RP, HOU I already had 4 SPs who would eat up about 900 of the 1350 innings max. Plus 2 RP using about 150 innings. That leaves around 300 innings for the rest of the pitchers. 1 more SP and 2 RP should cover these innings. Comparing Wheeler to SP Daniel Cabrera who I also considered, I looked at theses stat projections: Wheeler - W/IP - .043, ERA 2.70, K/9IP - 8.5, WHIP - 1.2 Cabrera - W/IP - .059 ERA 4.50 K/9IP - 9.5 WHIP - 1.45 I didn't seem like I was giving up too much in Ws or Ks, and I had a chance for some saves if Wheeler ends up being the Astro's closer.

15.09 Chuck James, SP, Atl

Finally, one of the guys I targeted in a specific round was available. As a Brave’s fan, I’ve been watching this guy come up through the system and he’s been successful at every level. With injuries to the Brave's lefty’s in the bullpen last season, Chuck made the big club, last year as a reliever. Then in May, he landed on the DL, with hamstring problems. Upon his return, the Braves decided to stretch him out and put him in the rotation. He responded nicely by going 11-4 with a sub 4.0 ERA in 18 starts. He has an outstanding change up and has been working on a slider.
After the disappointment of missing out on Broxton and Edwin Encarnation, I’m very pleased to get Mr. James in the 15th round.

15.11 Jeremy Hermida, OF, FLA

I felt it was time to finally grab my 3rd OF now that I have my IF filled and no SP standing out above the rest. I had considered taking Penny or Sanchez but thought that one of them would make it back to me in 10 picks. Hermida marks my first real risk/reward pick of the draft. Everyone was sure he would be a stud last year before the injuries. This year I look for a healthy break out season from him.

Im hoping for something in the area of 80/80/10/.350/.500 at least. The SB potential made him a little more enticing than some other OF available.

15.12 Anibal Sanchez SP, FLA While waiting for RoboGuru at 15.11, Hermida was at the top of my queue -- hey RG, you needed a reliever!! The next couple players on my queue were starters (Cabrera & Penny) simply because I only have 2 so far. I wasn't really enamored with either of them. There's a hitter on the list that I want, but am pretty sure that he'll come back around the turn for my next pick (we'll see!). I went back to double check on SP and OF. A few names surfaced that weren't on my queue (Maddux, Matthews, Hart) . . . but only one stood out above the others -- Sanchez. He had great numbers in only 17 starts last year (look 'em up!). those numbers extrapolated over 30 starts would be worthy of a much higher pick.

15.13 Ty Wigginton, CI, TAM Not much to say here other than I was expressly told by my contact in Prague (yes, Prague, in the Czech Republic) that I absolutely needed to take Dan Haren and Ty Wigginton. Well, I already had Haren by that point--for what I felt were good reasons--so I decided to take Wigginton because this guy must know what he's talking about. That all said, Wigginton has a wide range of eligibility (1B, 2B, 3B, OF) and a decent enough stroke.

15.14 Joel Pineiro, RP, Bos

With this pick, there is a whole lot of upside if named closer. And at the time of this pick, he has the inside track. This would be my third closer, and for a team like the BoSox, you will have a lot of opportunities. It also gives me very good depth in the saves department, which would be useful for trades if I am lacking in other departments.
