1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My strategy for this draft was different than in past years. In the past I went after position scarcity. After a 16th place in PCL last year I decided to switch it up. This year I went on best available for the first 10 rounds, and then went after positions as needed. I pretty much executed as planned. We'll see how it goes. I cant do any worse than last year!

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I like Sizemore in the 2nd round, my SP picks of Escobar, Sanchez, and Maine in the middle rounds, and Encarnacion in the 12th. My worst pick was Nick Johnson in the 6th. I obviously had no idea he was injured. Despite it happening with a week to go in the season and on a team that has no media coverage, I am surprised I did not hear about it. Helton went just a couple picks later and I would have definitely got him there. It also made me go after another 1B in Nomar once I realized my mistake.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Cant say I really paid attention to other's teams yet so I dont know.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

How slow it was. How ridiculously slow it was. Other than that I was susprised how long SP's lasted. I kept waiting one round after another, and still the middle tier stayed there until about the 14th or 15th round. Oh and the 2B run in the 10th was pretty crazy too.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Just one thing: Helton for Johnson. Other than that, it went fine and I have high hopes this season.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able
to execute as you had planned?

My strategy was pretty much the same as Nerfherder. I'm not a
huge fan of position scarcity. I also don't like to draft too much
pitching as you can usually find decent pitchers later in the draft

2. What were your favorite picks?

My favorite picks were probably my 4 - 6 picks where I got
Adam Dunn, Chipper Jones and Todd Helton consecutively.
After these three picks I went away from offense for a while. I
also liked getting Alou and Edmonds late in the draft as they are
usually underated.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the
most (other than your own)?

I agree with Nerf I didn't really keep too much track of other
teams by the end of the draft and wouldn't want to offend
anyone else by naming anyone without facts to base it on

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I'll second how slow it was. I wasn't susprised about how long
SP's lasted because the same thing happened in the mock draft
earlier this year. What really shocked me was the fact that I was
able to keep drafting closers without starting a real closer run. I
usually stay away when runs occur which is probably why I don't
have any great Middle infielders

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything
differently?

This one is easy as I regretted this pick as soon as I made it. I
would draft Jimmy Rollins in the 2nd round instead of Vernon
Wells. I also would have drafte Jorge Julio over Brad Wilkerson.
Unfortunately I was told we had 5 starting OF positions when
apparently we only have 4. Thanks a lot Blue Hen.

Plan or strategy

My plan was to see where the draft was heading and try to get some players going unnoticed in other areas. Out fielders and pitchers seem to be the most sought after in the early rounds. It was nice to be first but hard to watch 31 players taken before the next pick. Each round always had 2 or 3 players I wanted so, I guess it was a satisfying draft.

Favorite picks?

Pujols, Ichiro and H Ramirez/ runs,rbi's,sb's

Other teams

I think there were quality picks every round for each team. How many times I watched other teams pick my 3 favorites for that round and have to regroup before my turn. Enjoyable.

Surprise of the draft;

Slowness. It would go fast and slow. No average time. That's why I caused a delay in the draft myself. Then I started sending ques.

Starting over?

I do not like number one pick. Middle of the pack would suit me. Still satisfied with results.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Well, I wanted to start the draft off with power. 100+ RBI, 100+ runs and big time SLG. I think I accomplished that with a string of Berkman, D. Lee, A. Jones, and A. Ramirez. I waited on speed and think I got some good speed with Cabrera, Freel, and Patterson.

2. What were your favorite picks?

Some of my favorite picks were probably the ones I reached out to get. Taking Derrek Lee in the 2nd round was a reach, but I'm glad I have him. I also really like Jeremy Sowers and reaching for him in the 16th was well worth it as well.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the
most (other than your own)?

Looking over the teams its tough to tell, I would like to come back and answer this after I can see a team as a whole, instead of looking over the draft board.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

With the time it took withstanding, I was suprised at how few runs started. That really strikes me as good discipline by all the managers. People took closers early, but that didnt mean other people grabbed bad closers early. Same with catchers. I managed Ryan Dempster in the 11th round and Ramon Hernandez in the 14th. Usually those guys would be taken during runs way earlier.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything
differently?

I probably wouldve gone for a few more saves. I only have Dempster and some middle relievers. In the beginning I thought I should either get a couple closers or just PUNT the position all together. If I end up in last in saves, I'm going to regret wasting an 11th round pick to get Dempster when I couldve used it for a good starting pitcher.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

having the last pick in a 16-team draft was brutal. i really had no clue who would come to me at any point, since there were 30 or so players between picks for me. my plan was basically to get the best guy possible, and fill my roster.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

originally, i really liked Dan Uggla in the 8th round. but while feeling smug and clever, i realized there wasn't much left for me in the SS slot. i ended up with Stephen Drew in a trade for Uggla, which is a pretty big risk/reward pick, but one that i can live with.

picks i did like include Eric Chavez in the 12th (if he's healthy, could be a steal), and the back-to-back picks of Akinori Iwamura and Tom Glavine in the 15th and 16th round, respectively. Tim Lincecum in the 24th round has a chance to be a difference maker, and if Jeff Baker becomes a full-time starter, he's probably a steal at the 25th spot.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

too early to tell. i have not had a chance to look over them.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

to sound like a broken record, a combination of how long it took, and the seemingly lack of care and concern by a number of people in the draft. "oh wait, it's my pick?? but i picked two days ago!!!"

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

yep. i would have picked earlier. :o)

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

old news here: take the best player available, but:
a) try to take 2 closers in round 3+4
b) wait long for a starting pitcher
c) don't reach for a MI
d) get some setup-man in the later rounds to sneak out some saves and usually good ERA/WHIP/K-ratio

1a) mission not accomplished as the first tier was gone before my 4th pick. ended up with Gagne in the 7th round. not that bad if he keeps the job.
1b) RJ in the 9th and Hill in the 10th. I hope they play out
1c) I have not reached, but I got the talent that was left, and that is not looking very good
1d) mission accomplished (see Jorge Julio)

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

favorites:
Johnny Damon at 5.13
if he stays healthy Eric Gagne at 7.13
Curtis Granderson at 18.04
and of course: Jorge Julio at 23.13, 1d) payed off for the 1st time

do over:
Iguchi at 8.04 - was a bit forced because 2B was very thin.
Peralta at 11.13 - is he still the starter?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I have not looked at projections, so I can only look at how the teams are built. The more I look at other rosters I think they all (including mine) look horrible and have at least 2 weaknesses. is that me or was there not much talent out there this year? the players are the same but the real studs aren't out there any more.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

a) that it was real slow draft. in the end we finished in time. thats the important thing.
b) that so many starting pitchers went earlier than expected, because others that I had in the same tier were available 4 rounds later too. too many reaches for me
c) the "early" run on MI, I found it out too late and ended up with nothing special there.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I have to say nothing, because my team members are listening. If I would say anything negative about them, they would be more focused on what I think than on their play. and their play is more important than what I think.
Luschen, you are great, lets get ring!

all the best for you all, as long as I win.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I've never been too big on position scarcity, but this year I noticed a complete lack of any decent 3rd tier MI's. I knew I'd want to fill my MI spots with solid 2nd tier guys, which meant 6th-10th round picks at worst. Guys I targeted were Kinsler, Kendrick, Lopez and Weeks. Lopez I had to take a round earlier then I would've liked, but Kinsler (my favorite 2nd tier 2B option) somehow made it through 4 2B in 6 picks. ;)

Other then that, I also knew I wanted a top RP option (never had one in RIBC) and a solid SP by round 6-7. Other then that, just take power bats whenever I could. I'm a big believer in the runs/rbi's following good ratios and solid playing time.

Finally, I decided not to overvalue youth this year, and draft established vets for the most part.

Overall, I felt I accomplished everything I wanted to, save perhaps my final goal. Guys like Edmonds, Alou, a few SP's got away from me, and my OF is depending on Ari's young group to really blossom. (Quentin, Young and Hairston have to fill 2 spots.)

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Napoli in the 16th round has a real chance to be a big bargain. I figure too many managers saw his .230 BA and forgot all about his career OBP (minor and major) of over .150 higher then his BA. He can SLG near .500 as well, and with a full season can do 50/75 runs/rbi easily.

Sheffield in the 4th seems like a good deal, given that his 100/100/10/.390/.550 OF counterparts were going 30 picks earlier.

B. Giles in the 14th, Lilly in the 17th and Shields in the 21st all seem like great value picks as well.

Since I have 5 closers now, going back I could've easily skipped one of my mid-round picks and gone for a solid starter. Not a big deal though, as I can easily make a RP/SP trade now.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I Hate Philly took a bunch of guys I wanted, so I assume his team will be strong. ;) Haven't gotten around to finishing my projections though (got bogged down after the 14th round or so, haven't felt like finishing them yet either) so don't have any real concrete comparisons yet.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Nobody's mentioned it, so I'll point out that it took a bit of time to complete. ;)
Other then that, I think the 2B run in the middle rounds was completely normal. That was about the time to take all the guys who went, and with a very weak 3rd tier behind them, that is the groundwork for a very stable run. The only other thing that surprised me was being able to amass a SP staff I like, a lineup I like AND still find enough rounds to take 5 closers. Didn't see that one coming...

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Skip Torres or Borowski, as they're not needed. Couldn't have known about Paps though. Also, maybe one more veteran OF bat over both of Quentin/Young. Edmonds and/or Alou were in my plan there, and I probably needed to take Edmonds when he was still there in the 15th...

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I guess I had certain players targetted that I wanted to get. These were generally jacks of all trades that contributed to multiple categories. I got one with my first pick, but this strategy really went awry as 2 people in particular kept sucking up my que as my pick came up.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
Soriano has to be one of my favorites. He contributes in all 5 categories and was a nice start. I also liked Brandon Phillips in round 10 (especially with the MI run we had a few rounds earlier). My favorite pick from outside of my own team was Noah Lowry in round 20 in a 16 team league. He should have gone 10 rounds earlier. I also think Rich Aurilia in round 18 could be much more valuable.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Nerfherders seems very well balanced across all categories (and he took Grady Sizemore from me!).
I also like Mikel's team, but that might have something to do with the fact that he took Jimmy Rollins, Jason Giambi and Dan Haren right before me in consecutive rounds! Then a bit later he takes Adrian Gonzalez!

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The mere fact that we finished!
Seriously, the MI run we had in rounds 7/8 was a bit surprising. I think a number of managers really reached here.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I'd rig it so I had a pick more towards the middle of the pack. (ok, its sarcasm, I wouldn't rig it, per se, but I'd like a pick more towards the middle). I also would have gone after a second closer a bit more aggressively.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan was to be flexible and let the draft come to me. I didn't want to reach for players which led to me not taking any closers.

I, like many others, also wanted to have a strong IF. Giambi, Rollins, Young, Gonzalez, and Tracy help cover all 5 hitting categories and should keep me competitive in all 5 cats all season long.

1. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Favorite:

Santana: Having the best player at a position is great. Having the best player at a position by a long shot...even better.

Kevin Millwood: Getting him in the 20th round is a steal.

Ian Snell: Great young talent with 180K potential. 16th round - great deal.

Emil Brown: 24th round - great value.

Bonds: 8th round - He looks good in ST. He puts up great averages and if he can play 125 games I'll be a happy camper.

Least Favorite:

Dave Weathers - could have done better.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Philly and R9

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Nothing really. I felt that some people were taken a little earlier than I had expected, but that happens every year.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Not draft Weathers.
