Subject: RIBC AAA: PCL Regular Season Discussion

- Dude [07724916] Mon, Mar 26, 2007, 17:37
Moving from a draft/preseason discussion thread to a regular season thread. From the last thread:
If you guys get a chance, check out Guru's RIBC consolidated draft summary. It's interesting to see where other guys went during the draft. If you wondered whether or not you "reached", you can find your answer there. It has a "min" pick (i.e. earliest that player was taken) and a "max" pick (being the latest they were taken) along with an average.
If you were FIRST to pick compared to the other 4 RIBC drafts, then yeah you have to worry. Conversely, if you snagged someone later than all the rest, you feel good. I'm both guilty of 'reaching' early and grabbing late:
Picked before all other RIBC drafts: Scott Rolen Freddy Garcia Anibal Sanchez Pat Neshek
Picked after all other RIBC drafts: Ian Kisler Dave Roberts Jim Edmonds Kerry Wood
I don't feel too bad about Rolen and Neshek as Rolen would've been gone one pick later as well as Neshek. Can't defend Garcia too much other than me liking his WHIP and hoping the whole "From AL to NL" BS works out.
Still, interesting to review.
JeffG - you can go ahead and release Jorge Sosa if you'd like and leave the spot open for Sammy. |

Wow, I really shouldn't have looked at that draft summary. Maybe Beckett will win the Cy Young and make me feel better about overpaying for him. Interesting stuff though - very helpful for upcoming drafts.

Very interesting to see that my MR run wasn't that unusual. My pick position is in parentheses:
Zumaya ADP 12.12 (11.02) Shields ADP 13.13 (12.15) Duchscherer ADP 16.03 (13.02)
Somebody took Duch in the 10th. I was the first to take Zumaya and Shields, but it looks like overall I only grabbed them about 1 round too early on average.

I knew I had a bad OF. This just shows that not only are they not that great, I over payed for all of them. I think I picked each and every one of them the earliest.

MBT, I don't think anyone was really bashing you about the guys you picked... I think it's somewhat unusual that you would have used three picks in a row on them, however. I like all three of those guys, and perhaps having them will really help out. Again, I don't think that's really in doubt either...
For my own part, it's pure jealousy, to be honest...

Never said anyone was bashing the picks. I don't regret taking Zumaya or Shields but if I had been actively drafting instead of using a single Q for 8-9 rounds I would have taken Duch later and gone after a stronger SP instead, most notably Dan Cabrera, Ervin Santana or Boof Bonser.

First to take:
Glaus, H. Matsui, Borowski, Zumaya, Shields, Dellucci, Scott, Rivera
Last to take:
D. Lee, Sabathia, R. Johnson, Betancourt, Blanton and next to last to take Pedroia
Seems to indicate I was quite a trend setter ;)

According to Guru's consolidated draft stats, 15 of my 25 picks and 5 of my first 10 picks were taken sooner than the average. By this standard I am either an astute judge of talent, or I will be making significant use of the waiver wire this season.

I'm not so worried about taking higher than the average - just more concerned about the real "reach" of taking him before any other league. I think those drafters towards either end will, by osmosis, perhaps be more guilty of that than anyone - most of my 'reaches' were in the odd-numbered round when I had the 3rd pick in that round and had 26 picks until my next one - thus if you want a player you have to grab him or say sayonara.

Yahoo has a neat new chart on the bottom of their league standings page.
It is too early to be useful after one day, but it may be useful later on.
It has a vertical number line showing the standings for each category where the top and bottom are the high and low, and then a line indicating where each person stands. Gives you an idea visually of how secure your current placing is in each category, and how many are in reach to pass.

Once the season starts, Yahoo traditionally automatically adds new players to the database on the morning following their first MLB appearance.

Weykool/Species - Re: Eldred pickup.
Everything updated fine on the roster but it looks like the pickup of Eldred was processed as a waiver pickup. Species will have to update Weykool's waiver priority. Other people have made waiver moves, so you cannot reset everyone back to inverse draft order. Based on the fact he has not made a waiver move, Weykool should be re-slotted right between Loki and Smith32.

There is a new commisioner feature called EDIT LEAGUE HISTORY. If you want to set it up, for each year, it will allow you to select all related RIBC leagues from past seasons. When completed there will be an "ALL TIME" tab under standings.

It is still too early to get too concerned. It does not take much to get a jump in the standings. I was in 14th place about 10 days ago, now I am in 3rd. I think most of my movement in ERA and WHIP was related to my stats standing still but alot of people having their ERA and WHIP take a nose dive in recent days.
By the way, I spent at least a couple hours yesterday trying to decide whether to use my #3 waiver priorirty to make a claim on Phil Hughes. I was not sure if after his next start if he'd even have a slot in Yankee the rotation and may be back in the minors. So I was debating the gamble. It was all moot since darkside yanked him with a higher waiver priority.
In my case, sometimes a good waiver slot is a negative because it makes it that much harder to decide whether to pull the trigger.

46 | loki SuperDude

I also had a waiver claim on Hughes, and it is likely that other managers from the NY area or those who follow the NYYs did too. Of the two NY teams the Yankees usually do not overestimate their pitching prospects as do the Mets. It was a good pick up.
|
47 | darkside
ID: 181035120 Fri, Apr 27, 2007, 17:18

It wasn't too hard of a decision for me to use my priority. There aren't going to be too many prospects called up this year (especially this early) who are as good as Hughes. Obviously the problem is whether he'll stay up. But, I'm thinking he's safe to either stay up, or not be sent back down for long. The Yankees rotation is far too suspect to let his talent stay in the minors.
It was a different story in my AL H2H league (puget sound) since it's not uncommon for a star to get traded from the NL to AL. I decided to save my #1 priority in that league for Clemens or this year's Carlos Lee.

Darkside-I have had either LaRoche or Loney on my team, but decided that Loney had more potential. LA promoted LaRoche first to replace Betemit even though he is batting only .235 in the minors, because Loney has not duplicated his spring training or his 2006 MLB stats. If Laroche is doesn't hit, LA may play Garciaparra at 3rd and Loney at 1st. (I hope!!)-l

Figured it was worth a shot to grab him. I don't see him getting to the bigs and all of a sudden finding his stroke, but he did hit a GR double today, so that's a good sign. Betemit delivered a PH HR too, so if he steps it up LaRoche may not get much time, especially if he doesn't hit right off the bat. I can't imagine Loney will keep hitting so poorly in Vegas. It's tough keeping someone who doesn't play regularly on our roster with such a short bench. You've had good patience this season. It's paid off with Lincecum (or so I assume since I think he'll do well).

Last laugh is on me. An excerpt from 3.13 rationale where I selected BJ Ryan rational as the 3rd closer taken in the draft.
...I rated BJ Ryan a little higher than Mo (and Wags) because I feel like I'll get a few more Ks from BJ and he is less of a DL risk then either of the New York teams "sandman".
Ryan has been on the DL since 4/15. He underwent Tommy John surgery and is out the rest of the year.
Oh well.

Perhaps a "Last laugh is on me" aka "I can't believe I made that pick" thread is in order. From my rationales for 1.05 and 2.12:
Rational for 1st round pick Soriano: It was a toss up between Soriano and Arod, but I chose Soriano because of the combination of power and SBs
Rational for 2nd round pick Ichiro: Chosen for his SBs. Of course over 100 runs each season helped me to decide on Ichiro for my 2nd round pick
Soriano: SBs-3, SLG-.486 Ichiro: SBs-2, R-19

I can play that game:
Abreu 2.05: Abreu's gaudy OBP and 100/100 run/rbi potential combined with 25+ steals made him the 5 category stud I wanted. I really debated between him and Sizemore... Abreu: .325 OBP, .309(!!) SLG
Webb 3.14: Webb can be counted on for 210+ IP of solid 3.35 or better ERA and a whip in the low 1.20's. Webb: 3.75 ERA and 1.38 WHIP (just NOT worth 3rd round!)
Konerko 4.04: I really waffled between Konerko and Vernon Wells. I felt I needed to take the most reliable SLG guy off the board. Konerko: .289 OBP, .361 SLG Wells: .341/.484
Rolen 5.14: Most projections put him in the .890 OPS range, and I'm optimistic he will exceed those projections. Rolen: .266 OBP/.310 SLG for .576 OPS! lmfao!
Lidge 6.04: So I decided I would take my first closer and narrowed my choices down to Lidge and Chris Ray. In the end I went on some faith that Brad Lidge's 2006 was a fluke and that he will return to past glory.
The only reason I'm not in dead last is that since these picks I got Bonds (8th), Kinsler (9th) and Peralta (10th) for some pretty good mid round value. It's pretty funny re-reading one's rationales. We sure make up some funny stuff trying to justify our picks!!!

How about this for rationale humor:
Jason Kendall (25.07) - "Kendall is good for OBP, runs, and SB, but horrendous in RBI and SLG."
I think he's pretty much horrendous in everything (although he has 3 SB!), and I am seriously considering leaving the C spot empty. I'm not sure Kendall's counting stats offset what he's doing to my averages with his .200 SLG.

I've just accepted a trade which, the trade page said, won't be reflected in our lineups till Monday, the day after the trading deadline.
I presume the trade will go through. Anyone had this situation happen before in Yahoo!
Do we need to have the commissioner process the trade earlier (not today) to be safe?

This just in... Even this late in the season 13 2/3 shut out innings will help your ERA.
That is all.

I think I am at my high water mark since April by climbing into 5th place with last night's action (by a mere half point). With just over a month to go, it looks like JL and allhair will be tough to catch for the 1 and 2 slots as they battle for the league title, and perhaps 5 of us have a shot at the number 3 slot which gets an invite to RIBC next year.

I've never wished I'd made a free agent pickup 12 hours sooner so much in my life. I picked up Buckholz this morning figuring that if he did well tonight I might get a couple of starts out of him. I'm sure they won't be of the same quality as tonight's.

With a week and a half to go, the battle for the top spot, and the top-3 is getting interesting!

I'm just trying to stay out of the bottom 3 and relegation to AA in 2008. These efforts should have some impact on the top 3.

Our own pennant race is just as intteresting as the NL pennant races are turning out to be. I went from my personal high water mark of 2nd place 2 days ago back to 5th. JL has had a killer week so far offensively and overtook Slackjawed Yokels last night. Allhair is still in the mix. Andrew (who has not touched his team in over a month) is on autopilot and still holding his ground, now in 4th. I'm doing the daily pitching overtweaking for K and W but it has cost me a point and a half in ERA and WHIP placement.
My hope is, I'm part of a 4 way tie for SB, and just dropped out of a 4 way tie in OBP by dropping my OBP one thousandths of a point below the other 3. I think me finishing in the league top 3 will require me finishing on the top of both of those log jams.

My apologies for being an absentee Commish. Not cool, and I will take my shame to AA and perhaps face greater punishment by Guru.
Thanks to all who stepped up and stayed active in the discussions.
I'll say hi to Ozzie Smith for you.

quite a fight to the finish. I was checking the top 5's stats every night as things were so close and it seemed it was anyone's to win.

Some in other leagues are doing recaps. Here's mine.
Drafting goals - (from draft recap thread) Pre draft I was shooting for .355 OBP, .468 SLG, 986 RBI, 1036 R, 139 SB. 4.32 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 1096 K, 87W, 75 SV, which I figured would yield about an '11' at each slot. It turned out these projections ended up being very close in 8 of the 10 categories in being the stats needed to score an 11. I used different free projections available tried to pick guys who would help my team accumulate those goals. My team surprisingly pretty much hit the ballpark for those projections on all counts.
Draft Strategy (also from my post in the draft recap thread). - Not waiting too long to fill MI positions even if there is a better player on the board in other positions. Did not want to have happen to me what always seemed to burn me in prior years where I get a few stats drainers with the leftover scraps at those spots very late in the draft. I got very lucky in that two of the MI I took, Iguchi in Rd 10 and Hardy in Rd 17, I would say exceeded the expectations of that draft position. - Also took a different approach than prior years, this year I wanted to first focus pitching on closers (ERA WHIP and SV guys), then back fill with starters 3rd tier and lower once the main closers are gone. Even losing my RD3 pick BJ Ryan to injury, having Jenks and Jones on the roster helped me finish high in saves, although Jones for a closer expectedly had very lame ERA WHIP and K numbers. With my 3rd tier starters and worse, I was hurting in wins all season as I only had 2 staters who got more than 7 wins for me this season. I only scored a 4 in this category. - Steals. I never like drafting 1-dimentional pure steals guys, so I always look to take players who can get a dozen or so steals. 5 players on my team gave me decent double-digit steals plus a couple more in the high single digits helped my finish middle of the pack. It would have been higher if I did not trade Sizemore mid season, but the trade helped me in other areas.
In season Strategy - Other than the obvious don't leave a dud on the active team too long, I really thought it improtant to watch the innings and make sure the all get used up to help in the W and K counting numbers. I think only half of us hit the IP max. For me maxing out late helped me finish with a 14 in K's (moved up 6 slots in K I believe in last 2 weeks) If I could have gotten lucky and picked up a few extra winning pitchers when I 'rotated one slot' the last 2 weeks of the season, it could have gotten me even closer to 1st place overall, and with a better starter or two over the season even perhaps could have won the league outright. - Trade. I must have said no to a record 10 offers this year, and I got several nos back for offers I made. But I did make one deal mid season (with Conchero - Sizemore for Chris Young). I was in desparate W, ERA, and WHIP stats and was high in runs and steals where I could not fall too much. Surprisingly Young who saw about a month of the 3 months I had him on the DL, and only got 1 win for me, but he helped my ERA and Ks out. - Pickups. I did not have an effective pick up strategy other than to keep my eye on my roster and look for replacements anytime someone is worth drop consideration. In RIBC next year, I'll have to be more pro-active. But pickups is the biggest crap shoot in RIBC format with 16 active people in the league. When I decided I wanted Hunter Pence in June, he was just nabbed by someone else several hours earlier (I had picked Pence up the day before in my office league).
Worst draft picks.(based on 20/20 hind sight) Rd 3 - BJ Ryan. I called this a safe pick. Missed practically entire season due to injury. Rd 14 - Chris Burke. I thought this could be a steal, but a slow start followed by the Astros comitting to playing Biggio all season, made this move a total bust. Rd 22 - Carl Pavano. It is tough to claim a bottom round pick is a bad pick, but just mentioning his name is good for laughs.
Best draft picks Rd 5 - Chipper. Rationale says I almost took Rolen here. Chipper will get MVP votes this year because of the all around season he had. Rd 18 - Noah Lowry - 13 wins from this low spot is pretty good. Rd 19 - Aaron Rowand. Horrible spring and being in trade rumors during the draft kept Rowand off the board. Lucky pick it turns out as Rowand had a great season in the averages and in R and RBI. Rd 25 - Bengie Molina. Last round and still needed a C, got lucky with Molina because the busts I wanted were picked already. Molina was just good enough to keep me from playing catcher-go-round all season.
What about the other players I drafted? I think one reason I did so well, is the rest of my draft was pretty much dud-free. Other than the exceptions above, the reason my team did well was players like Berkman, Wells, Jenks, Co.Jackson, among others, all played right at expectations based on round picked up.
Best FA and WW pick-ups. - Joba Chamberlain. My only Waiver pickup (rest were free agents). Only 19 innings pitched in the regular season (post Yahoo! waiver period) but a microscopic ERA and WHIP, a huge K ratio, and a couple of wins and a save. As a Yankee fan who has caught Joba-mania in the Bronx, all I can say is that famous quote from Wayne's World "I am not worthy! I am not worthy!" - Garret Anderson. Lucky grab. Picked him up a few days before he came off the DL, he had an awesome last 2 moths of the season, probably most responsible for me moving up to 3rd place from 9th over the stretch run. - Alex Gonzalez. Actually picked him up twice and dropped him once. He missed weeks at a time dealing with the issues with his sick child, but when active he was a good fill in first when I needed a 2B based on a poor selection of Chris Burke, and later when I needed a MI after Iguchi was displaced from a starting position on the Phillies. In about 1/3 of the season in which he was on my roster he gave me 40R 40RBI and kept the team SLG on target.
Worst drop - Kevin Gregg, I grabbed him in rd 20 and droppped him a few weeks into the season. Ended up closing for the Marlins by mid-May.
Summary. I'd love to say it worked out just as I planned it but in reality sometimes dumb luck plays a factor. There were a couple of times in the draft when I was deciding between 2 players that it turned out I made the right guess. (Berkman or Hafner, Chipper or Rolen, Harang or Uggala/F.Sanchez). There were a few times I was bummed my guy was snatched just before my turn that it turned out to be a good thing (Based on my rationales, I had Aurilia, Harden, Kendall and Lidge snatched up when they were my #1 queue guys for various rounds). Had I gotten my wish for those rounds, I'd likely have finished in the bottom of the league.
Congratulations again to JL and slackjawed yokel who I look forward to competing with again in RIBC (assuming top-3 get invites). Also, thanks to everyone who made this a very competitive season. There really is no difference in talent from the RIBC AAA and majors. I competed with many of you for multiple seasons already and I look forward to the years ahead when we'll be in the same league again.
