On the next shelf down, you find many high quality players who were simply better than any hitter oN your roster in 2007, PERIOD. They can be yours for draft picks, pitching or other top shelf commodity players (and no, as good as they may be, prospects aging old farts 3 years past their prime and allstars who have been fighting injuries or down years ARE NOT top shelf material).
Carlos Pena - He only had a .411 OBP (9th in the majors) and 46 HR (4th in the majors)
Brandon Phillips - The highest ranked 2nd baseman in 2007. Oh, and 1 of only 3 players to hit 30 HR AND steal 30 bases. Add in 100+ runs and 94RBi's and you get one the most well rounded players at a rather shallow position.
Miguel Tejada - Going into last season, he was rated as the #2 SS. His power may have dropped, but his OBP was respectable and he put a nice combo of 81 Rbi and 72 runs. Those numbers should see slight increases in Houston (guessing around 85-90 ea for Rbi and Runs and 15-20 Hrs). A 3rd round pick and he's yours.
Carlos Zambrano - 177K's, 18 W's and 3.95 ERA and that was a down year! Would like to package him for a different ACE, but if I'm *stuck* with him, he makes my keeper list. Oh, boo hoo (yes thats sarcasm).
Bargain bin players. They are either high prospects or still waiting to have a break-out season a la Carlos Pena/Brandon Phillips. Get them now while they're on the cheap:
Jeremy Bonderman - hasn't quite reached his projected potential....yet.
Delmon Young - Played in all 162 games last year so you know he'll get his at bats. Projects to a 20/20 player, though didn't really show signs in 2007. The skill are there and he has a new club to break away from his bad attitude past.
Brad Hawpe - steady and consistent for the past few years. Solid numbers, but not mind-blowing, though he's great for the OBP.
Ian Kinsler - A little inconsistent in 2007, but when he was hot, there weren't many better. He paced with A-rod for HR in April but got sidelined by injuries. Bounced back nice and finished 20/20 with 20 hrs and 23 SB at 2nd base.
