If anyone is interested in any of the following guys for a pick of some type, it would make my keepers decision easier:
J. Mauer J.J. Putz S. Kazmir J. Chamberlain
Mauer or Putz I'd hope to get something fairly early-round. The other two can be had for a song.
If I post my keepers here before the 31st, am I allowed to change them up until the 31st?

When do we have to declare our keepers for the prospects, as some of the keepers might be desirable to draft during out regular draft.

Right now with the draft stopped we cannot access anything. Not draft grids, list of players taken, list of players available or our ques.

Just a reminder on prospect keepers:
You no longer retain the rights to your prospect that has exceeded the 3 year hold (those drafted in 2005), 150 IP or 300 AB unless you have claimed them as one of your six keepers as declared on January 31.

Here is the updated Prospect keeper list. Please mark your cheat sheets accordingly as there are several players that are desirable pick-ups. Remember if you draft a prospect during the regular draft and it is found out after another manager(s) draft, you are out of luck and must draft from what is left on the board at the time it is discovered.
PD may draft at anytime, but I'm not turning the clock on until March 3rd, a date we had already agreed to (it was split between that and the 10th, but due to real life schedules the 3rd became the choice). Therefore if it gets to a manager and he desires to wait that is an allowable choice. The rationale is very simple-pitchers and catchers have just arrived, and some position battles will have an impact upon where a player is drafted (two weeks can possibly make a big difference for some of us).
Here is the updated prospect keepers: Khahan Luke Hochevar-P-KC-drafted 2007 Justin Upton, OF Arin drafted 2007
Tree Phillip Hughes, P, NYY-drafted 2006
wiggs BRandon Wood SS ANA-drafted 2006 MIKE PELFREY, rhp, Mets-drafted 2006
Allhair Elvis Andrus, SS, ATL-drafted 2006
Unemployed Travis Bowyer, P, FLA-drafted 2006 Balriko Kazumi Saitoh, P, Japan-drafted 2007
wazaaap_guy Cameron Maybin, OF, Det-drafted 2007 Evan Longoria, 3b, TB-drafted 2007

Blackjackis21 Carlos Gonzalez OF Ari-drafted 2006

LOL!!!!
No, he's not that Ryan Braun, and unfortunately he did not match Milwaukee's Ryan Braun in terms of first-season production. He was dominant in 23 Triple-A Omaha appearances, posting a WHIP below 1.000 and an ERA just above 1.00, but he was years older than his competition. He is a groundball pitcher with a poor strikeout rate and he should pitch in extended relief for the Royals.

Can we please all check our rosters and make sure every player we drafted is listed on the draft grid at an eligible position?
Not that I'm going to ask for any roster changes or think there should be any roster changes, but I'm a bit irritated that Paul Konerko was not listed under the 1st basemen column. When I did my reviews of drafted players vs my draft charts, I noted in round 8 that both Pena and Konerko were not drafted in the 1st basemen or utility. So I opted to go with a pitcher instead of 1st base (if I had realized konerko was gone, I would have taken pena). But since neither were listed as 1st basemen or utility on anybody's draft grid, I decided to grab a pitcher and take whichever one was left of those 2.
Needless to say, Pena went and I couldn't find Konerko available anywhere in the available players. This DID affect my draft strategy.
So please, everybody just check your players on the draft grid and please make sure they are posted in at an appropriate position.
I've moved on from the incident, but now i'm spending time checking the C position to see if a pitcher I want has been taken already.

Tree I've listed Braun as an OF because he is coming into camp as the starting LF for the Brewers. I realize that he will need the first 5 games to become Yahoo eligible. Sorry if this has caused any confusion, but it's the way I'm putting my team together. Which is part of the reason I would not trade him a couple of weeks ago.
As for Konerko it was my mistake that he was not listed under 1st base.
I know I've always been big on paper work, but this year I've kept two list for each draft my cheat sheet, but also a log of each position and when a player goes off, I check the position I have him listed for and scratch off accordingly.

Tree ignore my email, with you and allhair trading picks the OTC board makes it look like your pick at first glance.
I just get a warm fuzzy all over thinking I have ONE prospect and many of you have tried to snatch both in this draft and also last Aug/Sept as a FA.

re:120 Hey I have a day job:) Seriously, if a player is in Yahoo's data base and is not currently on any teams big league or prospect roster they are free game.
Currently all undrafted players are on 48 hour waivers, which means roughly Sat/Sun all players will become FA. Until then players can be claimed off waivers, the waiver wire has been set up in inverse order of the draft.
Also will be looking into the Chris Young duo mix-up.

Yes, a manager can pick off waivers any player that is in Yahoo's data base.
As for picking up prospect eligible players each manager is going to have a different strategy, but if a manager desires to hold one roster spot throughout the season he's welcome to do so. Just remember that in order to retain your rights to such a player he must be one of your six keepers next year, or you lose your rights to him.
As for me I would rather take such a player in the prospect draft and if he pans out this year call him up, if not I'll be able to retain his rights until he surpasses prospect eligibility.
I'm ready to go with the prospect draft, but the majority of the replies to the draft date is the end of March.

Let's please discuss this over the board as we will have a future record:
Some additions to prospect rules to think about(ANY CHANGE WOULD BE EFFECT AFTER THIS YEARS PROSPECT DRAFT, and would require a 8 votes for passage): A) Prospects may be drafted in the regular draft, but from the conclusion of the regular draft until after the prospect draft prospect eligible players may not be picked up off waivers. B) Prospects must be declared on/or before the last day of February. C) Any prospect from a teams keeper list that is added to a team's regular roster between the end of the regular draft and BEFORE the prospect draft may be replaced during the prospect draft.

I'm not so sure I like A. In the past, the regular draft and the regular rosters always took precedence and had more meaning than the prospects and I think it should stay that way.
As long as we are clear that he can't be taken off of waivers but a guy on the FA list is free for the taking at any time regardless of status, I guess I'm ok with it. Or perhaps a minor tweak would be that prospect eligible players on waivers may not be claimed during the prospect draft (why shouldn't you be able to get them between the end of the rgular draft and start of the prospect draft?)

145 | GolfFreak

Not sure I like A. Teams that are on the lower end of the standings need there fair shot at the new hot prospect.
Team A has a good core, but in the 10 round takes the the best prospect off the board.
Team B needs to build his core, but cant afford to use his pick in round 10 for the hot prospect.
Not sure Im getting my point across like I would like. Doesnt it some what make the draft order in the prospect draft useless then?
|
146 | revvingparson
ID: 27222216 Fri, Mar 21, 2008, 15:18
|
Just to clarify on "A"- 1) Currently there is nothing in the rules that prohibit a prospect eligible player from being drafted in the regular draft. An example of this was 3 years ago Zimmerman was prospect eligible and was drafted in the regular draft.
2)As I think about it so that the rule isn't abused it may have to be amended to read "...if a manager drafts a prospect during the regular draft he must have him on his roster for the duration of the season. I want to avoid a player being drafted to keep him out of the prospect draft and then immediately being dropped off the managers regular roster. I don't know if this would answer GF's concerns or not.
3) The term prospect for our league is already defined as any player with less than 300 major league ABs or less than 150 IP whether he's a FA or on waivers.

Rev,
I think you may be over analyzing a non-issue. It hasn't happened yet. Everybody in this league seems to be a very conscientious manager and we all seems to be respectful of an 'unwritten spirit of the rules,' ie: we don't play dirty little games like this. Any rule you make to avoid something that may potentially happen for the wrong reasons will have a negative impact on just simply playing the game.
Lets take Homer Bailey. He's about to be optioned to AAA. By this rule you are suggesting in 146 (option 2) I'm screwed with Bailey. Right now I have the option of maintaining my rights to him and keeping him on my roster or dropping him for somebody else. Under your rule, I lose a roster spot all season long and am just stuck.
I just don't see the point in trying to police something that, to date, has not needed policing.
Here's a few options I can think of that are not as restrictive:
1) Do nothing until somebody causes you to do something.
2) Make a penalty for dropping a prospect eligible player w/in a certain time frame after the prospect draft
3)Make it so prospect eligible players may not be dropped for up to 2 weeks after the Prospect draft.
I would suggest (for people who find themselves in my situation w/ homer bailey) You cannot drop a prospect eligible player during the prospect draft (but you can before).
or
if you drop a prospect eligible player during a prospect draft you cannot draft him.

in the poli-league some of us are in, it's pretty simple.
between the regular draft and the prospect draft, you cannot draft a prospect-eligible player.
you can draft a prospect-eligible player in the regular draft. you just can't pick one up as a free agent/waivers prior to the prospect draft.
once the prospect draft is done, things commence as normal.

I just realized I picked up a prospect-eligible player post-draft in Manny Parra. I had forgotten all about the prospect draft. I'm throwing him back in the pool - I certainly had no intention of trying to circumvent any unwritten rules.
Incidentally, I like B and C. For A, I'd lean along the lines of what Khahan and/or Tree are throwing out.

I do think we should come up with something.
I would like make this move >>> Drop Carlos Ruiz and pick up Towles. But some how I feel this is wrong. Towles only had 40ab last year.
Maybe no FA moves till after Prospect draft?

154 | Khahan

I guess my problem with the rule is that it gets into intent. If you are planning on dropping Carlos Ruiz to pick up Towles because your intent is to use Towles during the season and you think he's a good choice, then I would say go for it.
If your intent is to make the switch to thin the talent pool for the prospect draft and you have no real intention of using Towles then shame on you. (and I know you aren't doing this GF, just using you as an example).
So my question is: Do we go on the honor system or try and police intent?

Re: 153: I picked up Steven Pearce because the guy was mashing during spring training, and I honestly thought Nady was going to get dealt to the Mets, thus opening a spot for Pearce.
While Pearce is a prospect eligible player, I did throw out the question as to whether it was legal for me to pick him up. I grabbed him thinking he would put up great 3/4 of a season's worth of numbers, ala Ryan Braun last year, but obviously not as huge.
As for all the rules, I don't mind them, but I think the first couple of weeks are key for prospect guys as we see who has nailed down starting jobs, and I would hate to be handcuffed from adding a guy, OR, awarding a manager who just happens to be on the prospect clock when a rookie is just declared a starter for his team.

i think you need a hard and fast rule.
it works very well in our other league, and it's simple. once the regular draft ends, you can't pick up anyone who is prospect eligible.
if you thought Towles was a better option than Ruiz, then you should have drafted Towles. otherwise, now you have to hope your luck holds up and you can take him in prospect draft and call him up.
regarding this: re:150 I don't believe that is necessary in that (Parra) is scheduled to be with the Brewers.
maybe so - but if we had this rule in place, that wouldn't matter, and he wouldn't have been able to pick up Parra.
i think this is a very good rule.

What is the purpose of having prospects and a prospect draft?
I realize that each manager will answer this differently, and that for every Zimmerman that is drafted in the regular draft and sticks his first year, there is also a boat load of Rasmus who are diamonds in the rough and get shipped back to AAA {I now must make the decision to hold him until he's called up and play with just 24 players or dump him now}.
Personally I look at prospects and the drafting of them as guys who are 2-3 years from making it to the big show. Therefore of the 3 prospects that will be on my keeper squad this year only one will be ready for the majors (drafted him last year).
Perhaps what would makes things more palatable for some is having the prospect draft start the day after the conclusion of the regular draft (still have rule "A") but the time frame it is in effect would be shortened. Thus both drafts would be completed by early midMarch and undrafted prospect eligible players could be added off waivers/FA and thus the only "luck" involved would be the normal who heard about their "sticking" first.
The purpose for instituting rule "A" is very simple the two moves that have been discussed in this thread are allowable under current rules, yet there are differing opinions as to whether the moves should be made/allowed. As far as I'm concerned the moves should be allowed because that's the way the rules are written, but putting rule "A" in place takes away the gray and makes it a black/white decision.

prospects, to me, are two-fold.
1. to help build for your future, be it in 3 years or 1 year. in a league i'm in with a prospect list, i drafted Huston Street, knowing that he'd likely be the A's closer the following season, and would mean i could draft one less closer in the regular draft.
2. for a contending team, to maybe give you that something extra that might take you to the title. draft that guy who might contribute THIS year, and call him up at just the right time where he could give you that boost.
personally, i don't think we have enough prospects. i'd like us to have no less than 5. fantasy baseball - more than other sport - requires more in-depth research, and that's why i like it better than the other sports i play.

I think it's enough of a pain just making sure I don't pick up other's declared prospects, let alone not be able to pick up "prospect draft-eligible" prospects.
So, contrary to my normal disposition, I think that less is more in this situation.
1) If a manager wants to pick up a player, let him. Nothing I've seen out of this league so far indicates that someone would purposefully add/drop prospect-eligible players just to keep others from selecting them in the prospect draft. Does that mean it can't or perhaps even hasn't already happened? No, but neither (to my knowledge) has it been a problem.
2) I think that limiting an entire category of players (which might actually represent the most intriguing category of players after the regular draft is completed) from the league is very restrictive IMHO.
3) Restricting prospect-draft eligible players will require a fair amount of oversight. Mistakes happen, but it just seems that we're creating a situation where we're actually inviting mistakes to occur.
Having said that, I understand that the original proposal was to restrict add/drops only during the period between the regular and prospect draft, so I think the impact would be relatively small.
In particular I dislike the idea that if you pick up a prospect draft-eligible player that you have to keep that player for the entire season.
We could push the prospect draft back in the season, and then establish a cut off point prior to the draft, after which prospect-draft eligible players couldn't be selected...
Or we could do as rev suggested, which would be to push the prospect draft up, so that it ran after the regular draft, although I think that's a much less attractive option.
Personally, I'd be fine with the idea that if someone engages in suspicious activity, that rev just freezes their team from add/drops for a period of time - say a month. I'd prefer to have a punitive punishment than a presumptive restriction on the entire league.

It never even occurred to me that taking a prospect eligible player in the regular draft could ruin the prospect draft. There's always some young player we have high hopes for and figure will make the roster out of spring training. If you draft someone like that (in my case David Price) you take on the risk so as long as we can continue to do so I'm good. As for the interim period between drafts a ban on picking up prospect eligible players is fine but I can see myself making that mistake even with it in place. I would like to have the prospect draft start right after the regular draft concludes.

you don't look at a guy's stats before you pick him up. you can't look to see if he more, or less, than 300 ABs during the few weeks between the regular draft and the prospect draft?
i see things like this:
1. move keeper declarations from January 31 to March 1. this includes prospect keepers.
2. Run the draft from about March 3 to about March 10.
3. you are more than welcome to call up one of your prospects during the draft - he counts as a draft pick, and it opens up a prospect slot for the prospect draft. this happened in one of my other leagues this season, as Phil Hughes was called up with one owner's final draft pick.
4. Run the prospect draft to begin the monday after the regular draft ends.
really, it's quite simple, and not complex at all..

Tree, I understand what you're saying. Of course it's not so hard to check that type of info, but mistakes will happen (and did at least a couple times even with prospect keepers being drafted in our last draft) and that it's not that big a deal in my opinion. The comment of mine that you cite was sarcastic in nature.
I initially interpreted the reason for this discussion being the idea that rev didn't want people drafting prospects just to keep them out of the prospect draft only to drop them later (while also having no intent of keeping them in the first place), which seemed like a fairly unlikely scenario to play out.
I now believe that he was trying to build a way to preserve the importance and value of the prospect draft, which seems to make more sense in light of his posts.
That said, I'm not a fan of the idea of having players in the FA pool (prospect keepers excepted) that aren't available for general consumption. Having adjacent drafts might be a good solution.

I see in post 107 that WG desired to draft Kershaw and in post 109 I mention that Kershaw had been requested and added to OTC's database...and in the prospect post wg mentions that he used Wise as a placeholder(though in the above discussion I see no mention that Wise was the designated spot holder), then in post 113 wg asked if the commish had to make the swap for him. I'll be honest until right this moment while I was sifting through this I did not connect the dots that post 113 was reference to 107 and 109.
With that being said the following is the Commish's ruling subject to league discussion...wg is to remove Wise from his 25 man roster and leave open a spot for Kershaw this is per league rules..."If a drafted player is not found in the Yahoo! data base you will have an empty slot that must be left empty to retain ownership of drafted player."
Let me know what you all think.

It has been brought up before that between having 3 prospect keepers, and 4-5-and now 6 keepers that in some ways the draft is being diluted and will become even more so with the addition of another keeper. (Not saying this is my position just reflecting on past argumentations)

Just so there's no confusion the difference between D & E is we did not draft this year with the intention of keeping 7 at the conclusion of the 08 season so option "D" allows for a one year delay before implementing 7 keepers so everyone can draft thinking 7 in 2009.

A) Prospects may be drafted in the regular draft. The prospect draft shall commence the day after the conclusion of the regular draft.
YES
B) Prospects must be declared on/or before the last day of February.
when do we declare regular keepers? i think both prospect keepers and regular keepers should be declared at the same time, and i think that should be no sooner than two weeks before the drafts.
C) Any prospect from a teams keeper list that is added to a team's regular roster between the end of the regular draft and BEFORE the prospect draft may be replaced during the prospect draft.
yes, presumably this is meant to cover a situation where, say, someone has Carlos Gomez as their prospect keeper, and wants them on the regular roster, instead of drafting Joe Schmoe with the 25th pick, they "promote" Carlos Gomez with that 25th pick.
D) To increase from 6 to 7 MLB keepers starting with the 2010 season.
yes, but only if E does not pass.
E) To increase from 6 to 7 MLB keepers starting with the 2009 season.
Yes. absolutely. we may not have drafted for 7 keepers, but i'm pretty sure every team in this league easily has 7 keepers on their roster.

PD - not entirely. it'll much like how the poli draft works, where if you promote a player from the prospect list to the regular roster during the regular draft, it opens a slot up on the prospect list.

We're over 1/2 way there guys. Just need 3 more yes votes. Lets get 7 keepers declared then start trading again.

Tree: The rule specifically refers to the time between drafts only. If we run the drafts right after each other this time frame goes to zero, making the rule moot.
The promotion of a player outside that specific time frame isn't covered by the proposed rule, IMHO.

then i think we need to get the commish to comment, because when taken that literally, you're correct.

I agree. If we're trying to cover other kinds of things with the prospects we'll need to make the rule more clear. I'm not 100% sure on what the goal is so I can't suggest language for it, but it sounds like, once we get that language, the rule is probably going to get passed.

On a technical note, yes PD is right. I guess I read it as the intent was to let us replace anybody called up to our roster betweeen prospect keeper declaration and the prospect draft.
Up to 7. 1 more Y vote.

Sorry for the confusion should read: C) Any prospect from a team's keeper list that is drafted to a team's regular roster during the regular draft and BEFORE the prospect draft may be replaced during the prospect draft.
I hope that clears up the intent.

in other words, what i said?
if with my 25th pick, i choose to "promote" a prospect to the regular roster, that prospect slot opens up for the draft?

hey folks -
can people PLEASE look at the prospect list before picking up someone who is quite likely a prospect.
for the third time in less than three weeks, someone picked up THE SAME PROSPECT that has been posted about here, as well as on the Yahoo site.
PLEASE - look before you leap. if someone like Mike Pelfrey is still on the waiver wire at this point, the odds are pretty good there's a good reason for that.
come on folks.

Congratulations to Barilko for winning it all this year. That was a great finish and I did my best to make it interesting (still cant believe that 2 days before the season ends I gained 7 points. Thats a huge gain) but just couldn't hold on.
I think this season for me was summed up in 2 decisions: 1 -not keeping Adrian Gonzalez 2 -Trading Jason Bay for John Maine in the 2nd week. Either one of those would have probably given me the boost in rbi's for another 2points and John Maine didn't do crap for my pitching staff.
Good Job Barilko and good luck next year. I still think I have one of the best keeper bases and am coming out swinging.

Thanks! Luckily I was at a retreat all weekend and wasn't able to witness your huge comeback attempt!
I have a nice set of keepers as well, and look forward to defending my title!
Key moves for me this season:
1. Trading for Pujols who was rumored to possibly miss time this year due to surgery. He was his usual awesome self.
2. Trading John Maine for Jason Bay, which Khahan talked about in his post.

Congrats guys, you both did an amazing job this year, and my hats off to you. My team was pretty bad all year and I was definitely in 11th for a while, so I think a 3rd place finish considering that is pretty good.
It's always fun to look ahead at keepers for next year, what are you guys thinking? Mine currently look like: Reyes, Kinsler, Longoria, Manny, Halladay, Hamels, and either Bruce, Liriano, or Lester.

I have 9 (!) keepers:
Edinson Voloquez Tim Lincecum CC Sabathia Carlos Zambrano Carlos Pena Aubrey Huff Chipper Jones Ryan Ludwick Ichiro Suzuki
Couple guys on the bubble (Soto, K Matsui, B. Lyon). Tough choice next year. Do I start out with an awesome SP core and take all position picks the first 4-5 rounds? Or so I spread the wealth and go with a "best available player" strategy? Hmmm.

i really don't know what happened to my team.
i'd finished top 3 four years running, including back-to-back victories in 05 and 06.
i guess my Pujols trade turned out to be a godsend for barilko, but a total disaster for me. oof. looking back at it, i'm like...wow...waht was i thinking?
i did end up with a trade in mid-season that netted me two keepers, but ultimately, this season was an unmitigated disaster for me.
who do i keep?
Teixeira Markakis Hamilton Lee K-Rod
and then a choice of some young pitchers, or Young, Davis, Zimmerman, Pedroia, Victor Martinez (???) and a few others...ooof..i just don't know.
