Lucky 13 Fantasy Baseball Rules
Basics: Season Full Season Slow draft via message board 13 teams 26 players on a team +2 farmers Positions C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, (3)OF, IF, Util 15 games to qualify at a position (Yahoo! rule) 162 games maximum per position Pitching (8) Pitching slots any combination of starters/relievers. Bench 8 players (any combination hitters/pitchers) DL 2 players maximum Traditional 5x5 Categories R, RBI, HR, SB, OBP W, Saves, SO, ERA, WHIP Maximum 1300 innings Minimum 900 innings if the minimum innings are not met the team will receive only 1 point in ERA/WHIP categories. This does not effect other managers points. Roster Changes Daily Unlimited Moves Waiver Time 2 days Waiver initial order is reverse of draft order Retroactive Stats No Unlimited Trades Trade Deadline TBD on what Yahoo allows, will be the second to last date Yahoo allows. Trade Reject time 2 days The trade reject time can be waived if both trading managers request the waiver and the commissioner judges the trade as no chance of veto. Any manager can call for a veto vote via an email to the commissioner. The commissioner will not release the name of the manager requesting the vote. Commissioner will then email each manager individually for a veto vote Veto votes are YES or NO there are no conditions involved. It is not the role of the voters to fix the trade. Managers not casting a veto vote will not count either way towards the veto percentage. Veto = 50% or greater of owners casting votes not involved in trade If a trade occurs where there are an uneven amount of players swapped (example: 3 for 2) the manager must leave a roster spot open for the trade to occur. Yahoo! cancels trades if a roster spot gets filled. In the case of a trade getting canceled because of this situation it will be required that the trade is made again and the commissioner will commit the trade immediately and waive the wait time. If a manager deliberately attempts to sabotage the league the commissioner has the power to banish that manager from the league and freeze the teams roster. (dumping star players to free agency, ridiculous trades)

Draft: 27 Round Draft 26 man rosters plus 2 farmer reserves Farmer explanation: Farmer = 0 major league experience Drafted in any round of the draft Each team is allowed one farmer pitcher and one farmer hitter Can be retained for the season they are brought to the majors and the following season if they are never released If the player is not brought to the majors during the season the following year the manager can choose to retain the player as a farmer or redraft another player. The 28th position will be a keeper. Keeper picks will be due before the start of the draft. The player must have been drafted by a team in the previous draft between rounds 14-27 and never been released as a free agent. Free agents not allowed. The player must be on your roster by the trading deadline and on the end season roster. Keeper eligible players retain their keeper status when traded. Keepers can only be kept for one year. Draft initial order will be random Inverse Rounds Draft Order (snake draft) Draft Trading Allowed http://www.kffl.com/draftanalyzer/index.php Trades involving the highest draft pick in the first 5 rounds, the trade must be within 1000 points using the draft calculator Trades involving the highest draft pick in rounds 6-15, the trade must be within 500 points using the draft calculator Trades involving the highest draft pick in rounds 16-27, the trade must be within 100 points using the draft calculator 6 hour time limit with the clock off between 2am eastern and 8am eastern 12 hour time limit on the weekends no clock off time Starting in the 20th round there will be a 4 hour time limit If a manager has back to back picks they are allowed one time period and then both picks are skipped. Once a manager is skipped because of running out of time subsequent picks for that manager do not get a new time period until the manager makes their missed picks. Trades do not reset the time clock. The time is associated with the pick and not the manager. If a pick is skipped because of time running out the pick can be made as soon as the manager shows up. Players picked after the missed pick are off of the board. If a manager drafts a player already picked the draft will continue with the next manager and the manager who made the duplicate can replace the duplicate pick at any time. Since the draft immediately continues players selected after the duplicate pick are off the board as far as the duplicate manager is concerned. In the case where a manager picks out of order or someone other than the manager picking make an incorrect pick (wrong queue, duplicate pick) and others make picks after the bad pick the draft will revert back to the place where the out of order pick was made. Once a pick is posted to the message board the pick is final
removing the post and repicking is not allowed. A manager can leave picks with another manager if they will not be available to pick. Queues are encouraged.

Farmer Specific Info
1) Each team is allowed one farmer hitter and pitcher. 2) They are drafted at any point during the normal draft. 3) To qualify for farmer the player must have 0 major league experience 4) I will put a list of teams farmers in the commissioners notes and will try and watch for farmers as they make the bigs...if you see one of your players called up...please post a message with your current waiver position and make a waiver claim on the player...I will waive the waiver time and fix the waiver order. 5) When a player is added to the Yahoo! DB once someone posts a public message that the player has been added you have 5 days to either claim or lose your rights to that farmer. 6) In the season the player is brought to the majors you can retain the rights to that player for the following season. 7) If the player does not see the majors...next draft you can choose to retain the player in your farmer spot or release him. 8) You can retain the farmer for as many years as you like while in the minors and still have 2 years rights when he joins the majors. 9) You can only keep one farmer hitter and pitcher a retained farmer still fills a slot. 10) Once Farmers make the majors if they are traded between fantasy teams they lose retention status.

I have requested a draft from Kafenatid. It might be tricky with our keeper rounds though. Not all the teams will have the same about of farmers/keepers, which will be hard to enter into Kafenatid, unless I use a placeholder.

Perhaps we come up with a list of completely ridiculous players that absolutely nobody will be drafting? and slot them into the 10-15 empty spots? Let me know how many holes you got and I can work on this list.

Yeah, placeholders shouldn't be too difficult to come up with. The difficulty would be that some guys would have more keepers than others, which would create some problems when setting up the draft, as the keepers would have to be inserted in the first couple of rounds.
Suggestions?

Request to Fred that he add players such as "A. Placeholder", "B. Placeholder" etc?
or if he can offer another solution? That basically not everyone has somebody for those rounds.

We also need to figure out how to enter the keepers, farmers into Kafenatid since we have uneven amounts.
Barilko asked Fred about using placeholders - the other option is to put the keepers/farmers at the very end. The tricky part of that is making sure nobody mistakenly drafts these people before that time. I would be comfortable with that myself, just post a list in the draft thread and everyone could cross those guys off their lists. Then when we get to the last 3 rounds, either you would pick your respective keeper/farmer or you would just use up your last pick on whoever.

Update Please sign up at both Yahoo and Kafenatid. As soon as that occurs, we can begin drafting.
I posted the list of unavailble players in the draft thread. These guys are off the board for draft purposes. At the end of the draft we will address the carried over keepers/farmers. For example, Pancho Villa is carrying over Ken Griffey Jr - he will just pick him in the last round. Slizz/Toral don't have anyone carried over. They are free to pick anyone they want in those corresponding rounds. We couldn't enter these names at the beginning of the draft because each team has an uneven amount.

Yeah, if you've never used it before you'll come to understand how great a system it is.
And once we are all in, everyone should designate a couple people as "designated pickers" which means they will get an email when you are on the clock as well. When they check the board they will see the top name on your que and can submit the pick for you to keep it rolling.
Another nice tool is being able to see everyone else's rosters on a chart as you go along. Then you can get a feel for what positions you should be targeting. i.e. "there is one good catcher left and everyone but me and the one guy picking after me has a C... I better pick him up here to make sure I get one"

It'll give someone the best 1-2 combo in the league... thats for a sure. And in a league this deep having two 1st round talents could be huge.
I probably won't do anything til the pick is up, then I'll go through the offers and pick the best.

Hi barilko, not sure what your email is so I posted mine here. I'm also gonna put the trade in the "Draft Thread" here on the board. While we won't be putting every pick in there... I'm thinking we should still use it for a few things.
1. The undraftable list (already there) 2. Any trades 3. When you select a farmer, please post it there after you select him on Kafenatid. That way we have a permanent record to refer to.
I'm also thinking we should post in there when that guy is called up throughout the season since we lose all that info from the Yahoo messages after the season. Essentially that thread will be used until this time next year for record keeping.

I'm also thinking, with this que system - no reason we can't pull it down from 6 hours to 4 hours for the entire draft. Nobody has any excuse for not having a few guys qued up and some designated pickers.

I'm a newbie here and don't wish to intrude myself too much, but I will say I'm strongly against going to 4 hours now.
It's February 19th!
Mind you, I can handle a 4-hr deadline. I already have 11 people in my queue for 2nd round pick (although I haven't made it available).

I agree Toral, a 4 hour clock isn't necessary. I just agreed with GO's point that we should all be checking in a little more regularily now that we are getting email notifications.
Jackhammers, when you are up, you can always just post your pick here and I can add it to Kafenatid.

Yeah, but on average this draft takes almost a month I believe with 27 rounds (and the season starts early on March 25th) + Barilko is going away in mid March. Based on getting everything set up and rolling we thought we'd have a few round head start by now. But it took an eternity to get everyone signed up (people still aren't in Yahoo) and this first round is taking forever for whatever reason.
Kafenatid should really speed things up once we get going and help us catch up, where people leave ques and we blow through 5-6 picks in mere minutes will help that. From right now til Opening Day - at a round per day is cutting it close. Forget that you want it done a week before to leave time to enter rosters, make adjustments etc.
I certainly expect things to get clicking shortly once everyone has their ranks and ques ready to roll. Hopefully that happens.

1st "reach" per say of the draft in BJ Upton @ 2B/OF.
Hopefully he can continue his 5-tool skillset:
OB% (400+), 30/100/100/30+ projected over 160 games.
I was hoping for the Rollins/Upton combo to anchor my infield :) Rats!

Its never a reach if you know that guy you really wanted wasn't going to make it back to your next pick. I'm sure some here were hoping to scoop him up with their mid 2nd round picks.
And then conversely you got Prince - who is a 1st round talent - a bit later than I expected. So it all balances out.

Upton no reach at all while eligible at 2B. By rotoworld draft kit, leaving pitchers out of discussion, Upton and Fielder were next 2 pix.

RE Pick 2.04 - Pancho Villa & Ryan Braun - correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt he a keeper as designated by the other thread?
Adam Miller Alex Gordon Billy Butler Brad Hawpe Cameron Maybin Clay Buchholz Clayton Kershaw Curtis Granderson Daisuke Matsuzaka Francisco Liriano Greg Maddux Hunter Pence Jay Bruce John Danks Jose Tabata Justin Upton Ken Griffey Jr Matt Garza Nick Markakis Rafael Soriono Russell Martin Ryan Braun Shane Victorino Troy Tulowitzki Yovani Gallardo
Not that I'm complaining b/c I have 2 elite players so far, but Braun would've been my 2nd pick instead of Prince.
I crossed everyone from the above list off my draft board. If that is the case, does Pancho have to re-pick?

And I just want to point out that, as a new team, I got no keepers, and therefore are, by my standards, entitled to whine and blame my poor performance on this for the rest of my time in the league.
I guess I should also ask -- what are the rules for drafting potential keepers this year? In which rounds? Ummm...prime numbers greater than 5?

I was glad not to have to consider Braun in the first or second round. I'll be interested to see where he goes in some other drafts. Although he has first round numbers and is ranked there by some sources, I'm always afraid of the sophomore slump factor, at least for early rounds

In addition to the 14th Round Keeper: As Chicago TRS points out, that player MUST be on a roster for the entire season, and never be on waivers.
You may trade for someone off another manager's roster, but as stated, that player has to be on an active roster for the entire year.

GO...the clock is messed up from yesterday's pause still.
It will say that ChicagoTRS times out around 9:30 this morning. He doesn't actually time out until around 1:00 pm.
Since you are picking after him, can you keep an eye on this and not skip his pick if he doesn't make it on before 9:30? Once you have picked, all of our clock issues are history.

Thats a good question, Barilko gone all day however. Thankfully its something that can be corrected.
If someone really wants to pick Maddux at some point today (I know, VERY unlikely for another 10 rounds) than just post that you intend to take him since he is likely available - and we will pause the draft until Barilko can confirm it.

A couple things:
Maddux as a keeper. That wasn't my call, as I didn't post the keepers, otherwise I would probably have noticed. (That is totally passing the blame on my part!) Its good that it was caught early!!! (Great work!)
Wiggs, check to make sure you know how to leave a queue. I watched Kafenatid all day yesterday, and it showed your name with the red outline of the negative sign. According to Fred, that meant no queue was left for people to pick from. Maybe you forgot to activate it then.
Guys, if you leave a queue, you must also activate your queue, otherwise nobody will be able to access it.

I also thought Morneau went a little late
I had Morneau qued up and ready to go. Then I looked at Pena's OBP from last year, a full 70 points higher. That means a lot since we changed from BA to OBP.

I didn't know that Pena's OBP was so much better. I forgot about the switch when I made my second round pick of Soriano... not worth thinking over now whether I would have gotten someone else or not.

Remember... "que's are your friend" and make sure you leave a couple designated pickers to push those picks through if you aren't around.
TRS - is Fukodome a Farmer for you? do you have a Farmer spot open anyway? I was curious who else had him on the radar as a potential Hitter Farmer and now wished they took him earlier.

Would that be allowed?
Two points:
1. You have already declared your farmer keeper, and nobody has been allowed to draft that player for the 11 rounds the draft has been going on.
2. You drafted Fukodome as a regular player, and then thought about farmering him only after someone made a comment.
Just my thoughts.

Good Points Barilko. However, to TRS's credit, he did say the following:
Hitter Farmer: Jose Tabata (not 100% sure if I will retain or not)
Eventually, TRS did make it official that Tabata is his farmer hitter before the draft started.
While I do agree with both of your points, I don't think that this guy would've been drafted within the 1st 11 rounds therefore I do not think its that big of a deal to make a special exception.
I would defer to the league to see if they agree (7 votes, not counting TRS). Just my two cents...

Agreed Slizz...Tabata isn't all that attractive now,
But, lets say that someone else wants to drop his farmer and the draft is currently in the 19th round, and that player is very attractive come round 19. That would mean that whoever is on the clock gets lucky and would be able to pick him up.
|
215 | ChicagoTRS
ID: 344311322 Mon, Feb 25, 2008, 18:29

There is a precedent...last year we had a manager draft multiple hitter farmers...and we ruled he had to declare which farmer he was keeping after the draft and had to drop the other or trade the player during the draft.
I would think I keep both and have to drop one after the draft and I do not gain another pick towards the end of the draft. Or I would be ok with dropping Tabata now.
Agreed it is kind of a gray area/not covered in the rules. It should probably be clearly defined.
|
216 | Slizz
ID: 171101318 Mon, Feb 25, 2008, 18:58
|
NOTE: I'm just throwing ideas out here...
What we COULD do is similar to the NFL Supplemental draft...have a silent auction where each person submits a bid on a already retained farmer and if he chooses to drop that player in exchange for another player, he will give up that pick in next year's draft.
EX: Before the draft we all declare our farmer keepers. After declaring the farmer keepers, we will have a silent auction on already declared farmers. We would elect someone to maintain a chart tracking all bids (EX: Slizz bids on Tabata for his 2009 20th round pick, GO bids on Tabata for his 2009 20th round pick, Barilko bids on Tabata for his 2009 19th round pick). In the event something like TRS picks fukodome and declares him as a farmer keeper and wants to drop Tabata, a silent auction would already be in place. If Barilko has not designated a farmer keeper yet, he would than own the rights (similar to a option contract) to obtain Tabata for the 19th pick in the 2009 draft as his farmer keeper (for one year only) while only giving up his last pick in the current draft.
Your thoughts?

I will have to think about the farmer rule...because I definitely think there should be an option to drop a farmer. I see it in cases like this where there may be one or two farmers everyone is interested in but they do not want to really drop their existing farmer unless they get one of the prime available farmers. There should be an option to drop.
Maybe allow drops during the draft and then the dropped farmer becomes available in a certain round...and a random point in the round. Like 20th round...pick number random.

re: 215
It is a gray area. But then why even declare whether you are keeping a farmer if you can just drop them anyways? If that was the case, I could have just said that I was keeping Scott Elbert and then dropped him at a later date.
To me the essence of the farmer is to take a chance on a single young prospect. One prospect, not stockpile a bunch of prospect-eligible guys and then pick and choose at a later date which one you are going to declare.
I guess that is my interpretation of the rules, but would be open to putting it up for a vote.
As for last year's precedent, I was on the record as saying I didn't care for that circumstance either.

A bit of a reach on Price...but I'd rather lockup my farmers now than later.

231 | ChicagoTRS
ID: 344311322 Mon, Feb 25, 2008, 21:31

You get your farmer for the year he is called up and the following year...you can retain forever as long as he is in the minors.
|
232 | barilko6
ID: 8118237 Mon, Feb 25, 2008, 23:07

Also...just a reminder for our new managers, Round 14 marks the first round for our late round keeper exception.
You may keep any one player drafted in Round 14 or later, so long as they remain on your or another manager's roster for the entire season. (So no player that was on the waiver wire at any point during the season qualifies.) You may trade 14+ round players from team to team and still have that player qualify.
You can only keep that player for the following season.
So Slizz, being at the bottom of the draft order, you get to draft the first eligible late round keeper!

If he's never been in the majors, you don't need to put him on your roster. Once he gets called up, you gotta add him within 5 days.

Ok, What I am seeing is Rasmus has no major league experience, and he has been assigned to triple a to start the season. Why does it say on the yahoo board I need to pick him up?

The way I understand it, you can leave him as a prospect and not call him up (until he finally gets called up by St.Louis).
Perhaps TRS is under the impression that Rasmus was going to be on the Opening Day roster as rumored (til the other day when they sent him down. Longoria would be the same for Slizz.. neither has played an MLB game yet.

See post #3:
5) When a player is added to the Yahoo! DB once someone posts a public message that the player has been added you have 5 days to either claim or lose your rights to that farmer.
I understand it is sort of arbitrary about how Yahoo adds players to their DB but the reason the rule was written this way is so we do not have the situation where managers are picking up others farmers as free agents. Generally Yahoo only adds minor leaguers who are very close to the majors. The benches in this league are very deep and one of the purposes of this is so you can find a spot for minor league players.
I am going to add some language to the rules for next year giving teams until Apr 1st (or maybe 5th?) to make initial claims...just to give time for people to sort out their teams.

305 | Great One

Thats why I was confused I guess, cause I thought we went the "0 games played" rule to avoid having to track when Yahoo arbitrarily adds players (which they seem to do on a whim sometimes) and to make it a more concrete thing. You see your guy's name in a boxscore - you go and pick him up. Otherwise you'd need to search for your player every 5 days to make sure Yahoo didn't decide to add him and I don't think anyone wants to do that.
For example, Longoria was available last year and there was no way he was being called up. But perhaps someone in more of a dynasty format league wanted to add him so they probably put in a player request and Yahoo added. And my farmer pitcher is set to be the #3 in the Reds rotation by Opening Day - and yet he's NOT in the Yahoo database.
I do agree we have plenty of room on our benches for these guys, so that ain't a problem, but I think its difficult to count on people to repeatedly search to see if their guys was arbitrarily added by Yahoo.
|
306 | ChicagoTRS
ID: 4110481415 Mon, Mar 24, 2008, 09:58
|
That is why we have the rule:
5) When a player is added to the Yahoo! DB once someone posts a public message that the player has been added you have 5 days to either claim or lose your rights to that farmer.
So you do not really need to search for a player...heck you can know he is in the DB and you do not need to claim until someone posts a message stating the player is there.

Thats reasonable... we can all kind of keep an eye out for each others guys.
It would be nice if Yahoo would add on a consistent basis each week... i.e. every Sunday they posted "status changes" as they call them on the site. Or emailed a list of them all to the commish or something.

Question on prospects. At what point do we decide that a manager has given up rights to his prospect by not picking him up?
And,
How do we decide the exact time that another manager can claim those guys, assuming that one of them could be very desirable.

Damn, I know the feeling bro...I can never get the UTIL / IF spot right on my squad.
I put in Jacobs over drew, drew hits 2 HR's and steals a base. I put drew in for jacobs, Jacobs hits a walk off and puts up a decent fantasy statline.
Same with Lastings Milledge (his only production on my bench)/Jason Bay/Rick Ankiel (2 HR, 4 RBI/Runs)/Frank Thomas (Grand Slam)...which brings me to my next point:
I am looking to move either Jason Bay or Rick Ankiel for a comparable power hitting 1st baseman/infielder (I.E. Adrian Gonzalez). Bay is a guy who should give you .375 OB% 25 HR and 10-15 SB. Ankiel looks like hes primed for a 30+ HR year plus he bats in front of Pujols in a hitters park!
Get back to me with any offers / indications of interest...
