0 Subject: RIBC AA Eastern League preseason/draft discussion

Posted by: mjd - Leader [501381415] Mon, Feb 18, 2008, 00:19

We'll use this thread going forward with preseason/draft siscussion.

If you've been following the RIBC in this thread then you know that they're voting on a possible rule change. Rather than vote on this ourselves, I'm leaning towards following any changes that they may make, if any.

So unless anyone has any objections. I'd like to proceed with choosing our draft positions this week.

I already have one set of random numbers. I need one more set, 1-16, posted here.

Nice flurry of activity this morning.

ywk is up. He has a 12 hour time difference. He's probably sleeping now. I sent him an email reminder and I expect him to pick once he gets up.

This is his first time in a slow draft, but he is a very experienced fantasy baseball player. I've exchanged multiple emails with him, discussing the nuances of drafting this way and the feasibility of him participating in this league. I explained the Kafenatid queue system to him and that entire drafts been done before using the queue system. I explained how it will take due diligence on his part to set a 2 round (32 player) queue on a daily basis until we finish. I also explained that for the most part, this was an experienced group and that timing out would not go over well at all.

He understands everything to this point and seems very conscious of what it will take on his end to make this work. I'm very confident that with his previous experience and current motivation, that this will work out fine.

One of the reasons I'm moving things along (other than to keep the league engaged) is to open Kafenatid once we set the draft order, so that ywk and others can (re)familiarize themselves with Kafenatid and the great queue system.

Once we set the draft order, I'll open Kafenatid to untimed picks. I won't begin the clock until March 1st or so.

The other reason to get an early start is that I've gotten emails from several managers who have real life conflicts with one weekend in particular in the midst of the draft. A solid start will allow us to extended/suspended the clock on that or all weekends, as necessary. I usually like to run an extended clock on weekends, just to keep things from coming to a grinding halt, but we'll address that issue later.

Kafenatid is now open. Towards the bottom of our main draft page and just across from "League Settings" is "On the Clock Help". I encourage you all to read this. It's very self explanatory. Any further questions, please email me or post them on this discussion thread.

The draft shall remain untimed until Monday, March 3rd or so.

Don't forget to name a couple DPs (designated pickers). As commish, I'm default DP for everyone, but if you want me as your DP please designate me as one so I'll get an email notice when you are up.

All draft discussion and instructions for your DPs should be placed in this thread.

DPs-Please check this thread for instructions before making a pick for someone.

As always, in all RotoGuru leagues, please refrain from mentioning any undrafted player by name.

TIME OUT PLEASE!!

Matt G. has made his pick putting me "On the Clock" per an e-mail from Kafenatid. I do not want to hold anything up, but I am not ready to start drafting. How many of us are? I had thought that the draft would begin in the beginning of March, but I could start earlier; however this week would be difficult for me. Could we discuss and possibly vote on this?

At this point, the draft is untimed and all picks are discretionary.

If you are not ready, don't make a pick. No problem.

I just thought I'd open Kafenatid so managers could (re)acquaint themselves with it and maybe knock out a round or 2 in the process before we start the clock.

Braun was on it. Albert was not. I expected him to fall out of the top 5, but not in my wildest dream to me, at lucky 13.

A chance I'm willing to take at this spot

I just made a pick for MBT out of his queue. I took the first player available with no other instructions out there.

mjd can set his own rules, but I used these in the PCL last year, and they are good common sense:

=========================================
Designated Picker Protocol:

I think it would be helpful to consider these commandments before making any picks:

1 - Check your email for any specific instructions from that team - i.e. their queue could have been for "Round X only" and we'll need to give them time to readjust their queue.

2 - Check the board for posts about their queue, or other instructions relevant to that team's wishes

3 - Absent that, it is then the responsibility of the particular owner to have an updated queue ready and also to manage your DP's. If you do not designate that a queue is for a particular round only and someone picks from an available queue, it's on you.

==========================================

one question about queues. If you don't have detailed instructions you would just want to leave one player available right? Leaving more is for when you are giving the other manager some discretion right?

Species, thanks for making the pick for me, but a word of warning for DPs. If someone leaves a Q please give them enough time to make the pick themselves. The top player in my Q was taken during the 4 picks at the top of the round so I would have changed my Q based on that information. It's my own fault for leaving my Q on Active, but I had made my other pick 2 hours earlier so I was checking the draft progress. Live and learn.

dpr, discretion? Yes, you do give them that power, but given very specific instructions that shouldn't be an issue. Typically we'll just take the first player on the list. The other issue is that you might give the other coach an idea about a player he had forgotten about. As a rule of thumb I try to keep only one player available in my Q.

EDIT: One player visible in my Q, not available.

41-Those are great rules as far as DP protocols go. Nothing worse than meaning to help someone out as their DP and the pick gets screwed up due to a miscommunication.

43-When the clock is running and I'm someone's DP, I tend to give them a little time to make the pick themselves unless I definitely know they are not around. Maybe 30 minutes to an hour. Depends on the situation.

With no clock, managers can make their pick at their leisure. At this point, I won't make a pick as a DP unless I'm specifically asked to.

I also use the queue system as a player watch list for myself, so I'm very careful about keeping it turned off unless I'm not going to be available.

Nice to be in a AA league with a few other experienced managers. Makes my job easy.

MBT - sincerely sorry if I stepped in too quick. If you didn't want him, I don't see why the Commish couldn't reverse the pick since YR hasn't picked. And since he's European, I doubt he's picking tonight as he's probably sound asleep.

No need to change the pick, it's not that big of a deal and it was my own fault for not turning off my Q. Brian Roberts is just fine, gives me another speed guy ;) Just wanted to give the other DPs a head's up before someone did get upset.

Just an FYI for the league, I'm going out of town Wednesday and won't have internet access for about a week. I do have someone who is going to manage my draft so not to worry. However, he's only going to be monitoring the Kafenatid website, not the Guru site. If we ever start a draft thread please post my picks and I'll get to the rationale portion after I return.

As AA, I believe we're not required to do rationales.

I was planning to do a draft recap. I'm jotting down a few notes of my thought process during the draft to help me make my picks. I'll incorporate them into the recap.

Last year I found it helpful to write the rationale before making my pick.

I actually talked myself out of a few picks. Just not enough to advance to the RIBC or stay in AAA p)

That includes the first 2 days when managers were still preping and only a few picks were made, so we've actually pick up the pace since then.

I think it's a compliment to all the managers in the league that we're doing so well without a clock.

I have a quick question regarding Free Agents. Once the draft is over, how do we go about picking up Free Agents? Is it 1st come 1st serve like with regular public yahoo leagues, or is there a different method?

DB - once the draft is entered, every undrafted player goes on waivers for 48 hours (I believe). After that, everyone is a free agent and standard Yahoo rules apply.

That's correct, Species.

That's why I'm hoping to finish by March 22 or so. That way we can run wavers for 48 hour and still have a day or so for FA pick ups before any games begin.

Not critical, but that's the plan.

Once we get through 5 rounds, I'll start moving players into the Yahoo league.

A March 22nd finish is GREAT! That's the day I leave for Spring Training baby! Woo hoo this will be off the hook.

I can't believe we haven't made the turn in this round yet. Booooooooo! loki, that god of mischief, is at it again.

It looks like youngroman was either 1 - not scared of; or 2 - unaware of Kazmir coming out of his 1st spring start with a discomfort in his elbow. Yikes!

I was not scared of Kazmir's discomfort. I like his potential even if he misses 1 or 2 starts early on. I see him performing similiar to Hamels and he was gone early this round. only the next few weeks will tell me if that was the right decision.

Why did Carlos Pena slip to me at 5.02; what am I missing?

Because I got greedy looking at ADP's and thought he might fall. I was all set to take him at 4.05 but thought taking some solid #'s at SS was more important. Oops.

That being said, while he's always seemingly had the skillset to do something sort-of approaching what he did in 2007, the fact remains that he's been a disappointment up until that point and his season came not just from "out of left field", but of of Mars if you ask me.

Nice pick.

I almost picked Carlos with 5.01, but his numbers in the past just didn't show that last year was what to be expected, especially at his age.

Instead, I believe Adrian, who was expected to put up these numbers has a better chance too. Plus I always end up picking 1B way too late and platooning two guys who I shouldn't ever start...

Yes, i lieu of turning the clock on I'd like managers to act like it is on and set a queue if you're going to be away for a period of time.

I can see that most of the league is at least stashing players in their queues.

And perhaps we can communicate a little better and let the league know what's happening. Like we would do if the clock was on.

I think it would be pretty awesome to complete this draft without a clock. It would probably set a RotoGuru Invitational League record. At least for AA.

That said, we still have a way to go. We're still 10 picks away from the quarter pole.

mjd - any way to see the average time per person?

regarding queues - i think in a league this size, leaving a queue is VERY difficult. i mean, i can go as many as 20 picks between two of my picks - and it's even more for some people - and things can change dramatically in that amount of picks.

IMO he doesn't mean a queue 20 picks long -- but if you are sitting at your computer but getting ready to leave, and you see you are 4 picks away from your next pick, it's reasonable to set up a queue for that one round while you will be afk. To me there is little excuse for multiple 3+ hour delays in the span of 3 or 4 picks.

175-I hope so.

176-The standing rule is: Check here and your email for instructions. If none, fire at will. However, wiggs is usually around most of the time, so I usually give him some time to make his pick. If he doesn't pick in 20 or 30 minutes, he's probably not available.

There's a lot of queues set today. Rather than just blow through them all, I recommend that we stop using them once we get to the top unless instructed to use them for the 23rd round. We'll have already exceeded our minimum quota for today.

212-and he certainly won't be the last. I'd imagine that a fair amount of these later round picks are merely placeholders for guys currently on the ww.

Could be worse. You could have picked Andy LaRoache. Just about the time Matt G picked him, I read that he will miss 8 to 10 weeks with a freak right thumb injury.

The league is started. Please check your rosters for errors. They're much easier to fix before the season starts.

All undrafted players are now frozen and will be available for free agent pick up in 48 hours on a first come, first served basis.

Wavers are set to the inverse order of the first round of the draft.

Nice job on the recaps. I'll post mine later today.

RE:226

It was felt that adding a DL slot would further dilute the already shallow pool of players available via free agency or the waver wire.

It was noted during the discussion that an extra bench slot was added a couple years ago to help managers deal with injured players.
