Here are the sixteen members of the RIBC AAA league:

1 Bags
2 Mike V/Dilligad
3 Holt
4 Bandos
5 Mudge
6 Jkaye
7 TD
8 Papa
9 Peter N
10 Mikel
11 Rheo
12 Valkryie
13 Fosten
14 Hubble
15 C1-NRB
16 Waaazup Guy

(Apologies to wolfer who is a good drafter and competitor - start up a AA league!)

I have sent everyone an email with league information, Yahoo, Kafenatid passwords and etc.

Once I get the random numbers, I will post the choice order for drafting spots.

We have one issue to resolve: It is usual for AAA league to post rationales and I would like to continue that tradition. I have found that it is spotty at this level.

My rationale for doing rationales:
1. I enjoy them
2. I like writing them as they help my though process. I have been known to write a rationale and then change the pick.
3. It helps with post draft and season analysis - not to mention making recaps easier to write.

I have thought that maybe we could LOCK teams until the rationales are done.

I would liike to have some discussion and then a vote on what to require and how to require it.

Looking forward to a great, speedy draft and a very competitive season.

Based on the first set of numbers, I re-ordered the list like this:

2 Mike V/Dilligad 2
10 Mikel 17
5 Mudge 28
4 Bandos 35
14 Hubble 42
3 Holt 58
9 Peter N 66
16 Waaazup Guy 69
7 TD 71
12 Valkryie 79
6 Jkaye 81
15 C1-NRB 84
11 Rheo 90
13 Fosten 91
1 Bags 92
8 Papa 99

Then I applied Holts list to create the draft order, thus:

2 Mike V/Dilligad 2 10
10 Mikel 17 1
5 Mudge 28 4
4 Bandos 35 15
14 Hubble 42 11
3 Holt 58 2
9 Peter N 66 8
16 Waaazup Guy 69 9
7 TD 71 16
12 Valkryie 79 12
6 Jkaye 81 3
15 C1-NRB 84 7
11 Rheo 90 5
13 Fosten 91 13
1 Bags 92 6
8 Papa 99 14

Thus our choosing order is:

Hey,

just got back myself. I did send an email to everyone (including Hubble). I will email him again now. As there was no clock, and it is 27 days til the first game (average draft takes 16 days), we are in good shape and I don't want to skip him until tomorrow morning at 9:00am East coast.

While I am at it, a few words about drafting etiquette, though I think I have been in a league with almost all of you.

1. Life happens - avoid getting angry and maiking snippy comments.

2. Leave Que's - the feature is awesome. Designate pickers. If you are at the turn, post/send instructions and turn on the free form entry.

3. If you do time out, please be courteous enough to post a "sorry, life happens" - no need to go into detail.

4. Two timeouts will result in clock being cut in half.

Can i pick before 9 am in the morning? I hired 2 engineers monday and i was busy "training" them... i totally forgot it was started... i'll remove the dust from my secret "winning draft" book and look where i should pick. If it cant wait, put me last. Give 6th to Valkyrie, this is going to be my punishment.

Bandos, thanks for taking the bull by the horns and running this show. I think we'll be fine on finishing the draft before the season starts.

The kafenatid site is very draft-friendly. I know I'll be using the designated picker function quite a bit. I encourage others to do so as well if they can't be near a computer throughout the day like me. I'm looking forward to a fun and competitive league.

FYI: As I mentioned when I agreed to commish, I am driving to Florida from the chilly NE starting today. Ths means that I will be out of hat from roughly 9am to 4pm every day. I will leave long Q's with one general instruction: do not pick the same position twice in a row (subject to change). Holt, Fosten and Mudge are designated pickers. If there are any problems, I will adress them when I can.

Holt, please post your rationale or a placeholder ASAP, so that rheo may place his and we dont get behind of the bat!

If you are ready to post yours when the time comes up, just put in placeholders for the picks you are skipping and then the delinquent manager may post the rationale in this thread and I or another mod may move it over.

1.08 Miguel Cabrera, 3B, DET

I chose the 8th pick because I wanted to be in the middle of the
draft and I though there was an ever so slight talent drop after
the 8th pick.

I had Cabrera targeted from the beginning, as he was 8th on my
depth chart. Nobody fell from my top seven leaving Cabrera for
the taking.

100 R, 110 RBI and 1.000 OPS isn't out of the question for this
slugging 3B.

Other Players I considered: David Ortiz

1.07 David Wright, 3B, NYM

I chose the seventh pick because I wanted to try a mid-draft position. In previous years I've drafted twelth (not-so-much by choice), second (by choice), and fourth (by choice).

I was shocked- shocked, I say- that David Wright was still available at this pick. I'm very excited about his expected production and am happy to have secured a corner infield slot that saw four players go in the first round.

01.05 Johan Santana, SP NYM

It's always a gamble takng pitchers early, but I'm hoping the move to Shea will make Santana worth a 1:5 pick. 20 wins is certainly possible, along with 250 K and sub-3 ERA. One more bona fide starter and I'll concentrate on a middling offense.

I have received an email saying that I am the designated picker for Dilligad. I don't know why I am the "designated picker" I don't personally know him although i have played in a few leagues and have a healthy respect for him. It is showing choices...I am obviously new to this aspect. Am I supposed to pick for him? I dont want to screw things up for him or the draft. I will check my email jdinkmeyer@aol.com for further instructions. Sorry for the confusion. And if I am should i pick the first guy listed for him?

Papa: Dilligad probably made you a designated picker for him because you pick before/after him in the draft. With no other instructions in this forum, the protocol is to choose the first player on his list for him.

Go ahead and pick the first player listed.

if someone leaves a queue, unless they post something in this forum saying not to use it for whatever reason, then you just go ahead and use it.

sometimes a person will post something like "allow 20 minutes before using my queue" or something like that, so you should always check here before picking from a queue.

Bandos, since you pick before/after me, I'd prefer not to make my queue available to league admin. Is there a setting that would make queue available to DP only? Not really a big deal just something I was wondering. With us having four picks so close its kinda hard not to target some of the same players.

Also I have noticed people posting rationales here, shouldn't we start a separate thread for that?

just make it so he can only see the top player available. he can't see that player til your actual pick is up, so it shouldn't affect any of his decisions.

we have a separate rationale thread. people are posting some here so that their rationale can be moved into a placeholder.

1.10 Ryan Howard, 1B, Phi

Best power numbers available. I'm hoping that he can regain the OBP numbers from 2006 but even if he doesn't the SLG and RBIs make him a must 1st rounder. Almost took a chance on Pujols' health not being a problem.

2.07 Ichiro, OF, Sea

Another 351/396/431 with 50 SBs and 110 runs? Even a little less makes him a great fantasy player. His manager has challenged him to hit 400 and steal 80. Come on, come on.

1.09 David Ortiz, UTIL, BOS

What's not to like about Big Papi? He even managed to swipe 3 bases last year. :-) On a serious note, the fact that he only qualifies at the utility spot hurts some, but his numbers more than make up for it.

On what some considered an off-year for Papi, he still managed to drive in 117 runs, score another 116 and post an OPS of 1.065. I'm expecting another monster year out of Ortiz as he anchors one of the premiere offenses in the majors.

Other players I considered where Howard and Pujols. I couldn't get past the elbow injury on Albert. Howard was very tempting, but I feel like Ortiz is a safer pick with Howard's fluctuating batting average and semi-alarming strikeout totals.

2.08 Lance Berkman, 1B/OF, HOU

Well, nothing like having your queue get absolutely hammered. I had a 5 player queue of Sizemore, Crawford, Beltan, Soriano and Teixeira. Needless to say, none of them made it to me. I won't complain about bringing on Sir Lancelot though.

This pick does come with some slight concern. Berkman hasn't been a model of consistency. Injuries have been part of the problem. If he's healthy, I expect him to drive in 120 RBIs, score over 100, and post an OPS near 1.00 You could do worse in the 2nd round.

I did not give much consideration to anyone else. Lance is the anchor for an improving offense that should prove to be formidable this year. BTW, you should notice the trend of me drafting anchors/cleanup hitters early on. Expecting good things here.

2.16 Brandon Webb SP ARI

I figure if I want to put up big points in the pitching categories then I can't wait til the 4th round to start drafting pitchers. Webb is very consistent. I'm looking for 15 wins, 180 K's, 3.00'ish ERA, whip around 1.2 or lower.

3.01 C.C. Sabathia SP CLE

I strongly considered Jeter for this pick. I also looked at Ordonez, Granderson, and Dunn. In the end I decided that the supply of extremely high quality SP's was much lower than the supply of pretty good hitters. If I want to put up big pitching numbers, why not take Sabbathia to anchor things along with Webb rather than gamble on what would be available later?

Looking for close to 20 W's, 200 K's 3.20'ish ERA. 1.15 ERA. Nasty!

02.12 Erik Bedard, SEA SP

Way, way out on a limb with this pick for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is that I already have a quality starter in Santana. I looked seriously at Markakis and Dunn and figured that one of them would make it back to me (Dunn did). I decided to go against the conventional wisdom and took Bedard, who I think will get 16 or more wins at Safeco while piling up over 200 K's and maintaining an ERA in the low 3's. But, then again...

3.09 Justin Morneau, 1B, MIN

This could be seem by some as a mini-reach, but I think its solid value for Morneau. I did not expect him to even make it back to me so I had to differ plans slightly. I originally had not planned on taking another 1B, but he'll make a solid CI. Also, if I need to shift Berkman to the OF, Morneau can fit in nicely at 1B. I must admit that I do have a personal bias so that was certainly a factor as well.

My best guess for why Morneau dropped is due to his sub-par performance last year. His 2nd half was forgettable. I think he'll bounce back this year and produce like he did in his 2006 MVP campaign. I'm looking for around 120 RBIs, 95 runs scored and an OPS over .900.

2.10 Brian Roberts, 2B, BAL

Between Roberts and Brandon Phillips at 2B, I took the SB and OBP over the SLG. That's what OF are for :) Because of my draft position, I was afraid that if I didn't get a top second baseman here, it might be the middle rounds before I filled the position.

3.07 Chone Figgins, Util, LAA

Looks like I'm not punting SB this year like I have in the past. This is poor fantasy philosophy, but multiple position eligibility has always done a little something for me and I've coveted Chone Figgins in every RIBC the last three years. Chone won't give me the OBP and SLG I like in the early rounds, but I expect the SB and R to make up for it.

2.09 Travis Hafner, 1B, CLE

Like Peter N. I was hoping that one of , Vlad, Beltran, Soriano,
etc. would fall. None of them did which directed my attention to
the 1B position. Lance Berkman and Travis Hafner. Peter N.
took care of Berkman for me which made my decision easy.

Hafner has had great numbers through out his career with the
only exception being his 2nd half in 07. IIRC he was suffering
through some nagging injuries which contributed to his
struggles.

I look for Hafner to have a bounce back year and have numbers
close to his 06 campaign. If he can produce 110 RBI 100 R and a
1.000 OPS I'll be extremely pleased.

3.08 Curtis Granderson, OF, DET

After I picked Hafner the two players I had on my wish list were
Adam Dunn and Curtis Granderson. I didn't expect either to
make it back to me but to my suprise Curtis did!

Curtis had a monster 2007 joining the exclusive 20-20-20-20
club. 20 HR's and 20 Triples sure do help the SLG%.

I look for Curtis to be close to his 07 numbers and if he figures
out how to hit lefties...yeah, I'll say it...he will surpass them!

I can see 110 Runs, 80 RBI, 25 SB, .860 OPS

4.09, Alex Rios, OF, TOR

I was looking to add an IFer at this point in the draft and I had
my sights set on Robinson Cano. I Missed him by one pick,
thanks Pete.

Next on my list was Rios. His projected numbers are actually
pretty comparable to Granderson. Needing 4 OF's in RIBC it's
nice to know I have 2 solid players that can contribute to all 5
categories.

I can see him getting 100 R 80 RBI, .860 OPS and 20 SB's

I already had Roberts typed into the word file. Oops. Guess others saw the value as well. I had planned on he and Chris Young for this turn so…

3.15 Chris Young, OF, AZ

I think his solid rookie season was a precursor of things to come. In this format, he is a contributor in all 5 cats as his BA is the only problem so far. 30 HR and 20 SB isn’t too much to ask.

4.02 Ian Kinsler, 2B, TEX,

After losing Roberts, I had Kinsler as my next best 2nd sacker. The ratios are merely average but the sb’s and runs will really help. With Sizemore, Young and Kinsler, I am well on my way to actually competing in SB for the first time in my life. Feels weird.

4.08 Robinson Cano 2B, NYY

What's not to like about a guy with Cano's power at a thin position. I was very happy to see him make it to me. After losing out on my top guys in rounds 1 and 2, I feel like I've been fortunate to get Morneau and Cano in rounds 3 and 4.

I'm expecting Cano, at the age of 25, to really emerge this year. An OPS over .850, 100 runs and 100 RBIs in a deep Yankee lineup is not unrealistic. You can't say that about many 2nd basemen. He also made strides last year against lefties.

I had targeted the 5th round for my first pitcher. I had Harang

enough depth left at RP I decided to grab Harang and pick a
Closer in the 6th.

Harang's going to give me 200 K's 16 W, a mid 3 ERA and a sub

4.14 Justin Verlander, P, Det :

I wasn't planning to take a SP this early, but I keyed in on the Verlander/Lackey/Oswalt class of starters and decided to get one of them. I concluded that JV is the best. Oswalt is no longer a 20 win threat on a weaker Houston team. Both JV and Lackey can win 18-20 on playoff teams. JV has a little more upside than the stable Lackey in my opinion so it was personal choice in eventually settling on Verlander.

5.03 Pat the Bat Burrell, OF, Phi

Along with Abreu, another one of the players hugely benefited from RIBC's use of OBP. Burrell's value sees an even more drastic bump than Abreu (One site listing Auction $ has him at $10 with AVG and $22 with OBP). Burrell is as consistent as they come with approx. .400 OBP/.500 SLG for 3 years running. Factor in the ballpark and the lineup he hits in and it's a very reliable source of offense.

Not the SLG you'd want from the first OF you get, but a solid OBP balances out the power lackage. Bay could be responsible for producing 200 runs this year (R+RBI), although his supporting cast will have something to do with it. (Don't they always?)

I wanted to get a SP with my 3rd or 4th pick. I thought many more SPs would be drafted before my 5th pick. No hitter stood out as being superior to others available, so I decided to pick a SP with my 3rd pick and a hitter with my 4th pick. I thought Beckett, Verlander, and Hamels were the best SPs available. All three are strong in W, K, ERA, and WHIP. I had Beckett and Hamels rated a little higher than Verlander. The top ones are gone, so I plan to get an average one in a late round. No 2B or SS stood out as being significantly better than the rest. I thought Lowell was the best 3B available by far. I was also looking for a 2nd SP. I probably would have drafted C. Young if he didn't go with pick 7.05. Cabrera is an above average MI that will produce a high number of R's, above average RBI's, and about 20 SB's. His OBP and SLG are average for a MI.

6.09 Francisco Cordero, RP, Cin

After taking Harang in the 5th I had to pick a closer in the 6th.
There was a mini run that took my favorites away (Wagner,
Jenks, Saito) but I am still pleased to have a potential 40 Save
guy. If he keeps the ERA under 3 and WHIP under 1.20 I'll be psyched.

7.08 Edgar Renteria, SS, DET

It had been a while since I took a Tiger, so when Renteria was
available in the 7th I just had to take him. I felt that there was a
bit of a drop in talent at SS after Renteria so I was hoping he
would make it back to me.

Renteria joins a stacked Tigers lineup in 08. I feel the following
numbers should be within reason. 90 Runs, 70 RBI, .350 OBP
and .440 SLG. 10 Steals.

8.09 Manny Corpus, RP, Col

Nobody was really jumping off my depth chart at this point in
the draft so I decided to go with one of the few remaining strong
closers on the board. Corpus performed wonderfully for
Colorado after he took over the closer position in 07. I expect
Corpus to pick up where he left off last year and I don't think 35
saves is out of the question.

6.14 Paul Konerko, 1B, CWS

This definitely felt like the last reliable 1B left on the board, so I put some faith that he will improve over last year's #'s. Something in the range of .360 OBP/.520 SLG plus 100 RBI would certainly validate taking him here. History suggests this is a reasonable expectation.

7.03 Jose Valverde, RP, Hou

Yes, the thought of him closing in Minute Maid Park is scary. But I had to get a closer before it was too late. Hard to project ERA and WHIP, but 35-40 saves is all I need from him keep up in that category.

8.14 James Shields, P, TB

At #126, it seemed like Shields might have dropped a bit below what he is worth. He might struggle to win more than 12 games, but his command is outstanding, meaning good K numbers and a low WHIP are to be expected. His ERA might be near 4, but overall a solid #2 starter for me behind the ace Verlander.

9.03 Joakim Soria, P, KC

I am a big fan of Soria even though saves will be hard to come by in KC. I don't think 30 is out of the question, making him a fine pairing with Valverde. I feel like I have 2 of the top 15 or 20 closers. In a 16 team league, that should work out very well. Saves will be available on the WW as the season goes on, but with the first-come, first-serve FA policy, it may be hard to jump on guys in such an active league. I'd rather be safe and have two closers locked in.

Lidge is expected to be the Phillies closer this season. He should get plenty of save opportunities because I expect the Phils to have a winning record. Lidge pitched better with the Astros in 2007 than he did in 2006 and I think he is finally over his 2005 playoff disaster. I don't expect his K rate to approach 2005, but he will still average over 9K/9. I heard a report today that his rehab from knee surgery is going well and there is a chance he will be ready by opening day. I expect Lidge to be back by mid/late April at the latest. I also considered O. Hudson to fill my need at 2B. Since everyone that picks prior to my next pick already picked a 2B, I feel Hudson will be available at 10.04.

Attn: I just got enough time to look at the rationale thread. It's a mess. I simply do not have the time to make the edits necessary to make it look decent. There are many first round picks without a rationale anyhow, so I guess people arent that interested.

I want to thank those of you who took the time to religiously post theirs and I will look forward to reading them in a draft recap, where I will be posting ALL my rationale's. If anyone has a ton of time and the desire to get us up to date with the rationale thread, let me know and I am sure we can ask Guru to allow you to do it.

FYI, part II. I havent heard from Hubble (who emailed me that he was going unexpectedly to the WARM for this week) in a few rounds. I was to send him a list of who was taken and he would email me a Q. He implied that I could go ahead and make his picks if he did not email me. So I have been picking for him the last 2 turns(much to my dismay as I have been taking players off of my Q and drafting them for him!). I hope he returns soon or gets in touch with me.

This is unusual. Concerns?

That stinks. If I were in Hubble's position, I think I'd ask someone who isn't involved in the draft to pick for me. Asking you to take players off your own cheatsheet makes for a pretty crappy draft experience. I wouldn't have any problem at all if you asked an outsider to make the picks for him. We could also choose a random cheat-sheet off the web and just take players off it for him. Missing a week of drafting should be like missing part of a yahoo public draft (ie, you end up with some less than optimal players).

Hey Bandos, I agree with what Holt suggested.

If an outsider could pick for him I'm fine with that.

If that's not possible I say take the two highest ranked players on
Yahoo. (That's what would happen in a fast live anyway).

So i'll be another day at least without being able to draft. If everything goes well i should be back wednesday morning to continue whatever left of the draft. Thanks to Bandos to pick from my Q. Sorry i couldnt make anything longer but as i told him already we booked a last minute flight to D.R. and left almost the same day (1 day drive to airport). I ask at least 3 people outside the draft to help me with my draft, sadly none could help me out. Thanks again to whoever pick for me.

Good to hear from Hubble. Chicago trs will pick til Hubble gets back to Quebec.

On another note, the percentage of players drafted from here on in that will remain on your roster for the year (or be major contributors) is probably less than 40%. I would love to get this done before the weekend and certainly before I hit the road north again on the 18th. Right now we are scheduled to finish on the 18th. I would love to see more than TWO Q's on and filled at this point. There will be a clock this weekend as by that time we will be at the bitter end.

I enjoy rationalizing things so here goes:

10.14 Shane Victorino, OF, Phi

Now that Aaron Rowand is gone, CF is all Shane's. He has more SLG to offer than most of the SB specialists, and hitting 2nd between Rollins and Utley/Howard/Burrell is an outstanding situation. Overall my projections aim for 100 R/50 RBI/30 SB and and an OPS between 750-800.

11.03 Scott Rolen, 3B, TOR

Sometimes you just have to take a risk. A lot of my picks come with a higher probability of projection accuracy. Rolen does not bring this level of reliability. He could stumble thru the season with a sub-800 OPS or he could re-emerge as a .350/.500 type hitter batting 5th or 6th in a hitter's park. At this stage in the draft, it was worth the gamble to me. I will need to draft a back-up plan later in the draft. Mark Reynolds was one option--but he went in rd. 14.

12.14 Chien-Ming Wang, P, NYY

Wang is the opposite of Rolen, in that I consider his projections very reliable. Of course, I'm not asking for too much--a 4.0 ERA, 1.3 WHIP, and 18 wins (that's a lot, but almost a lock if he makes 30+ starts for the Yanks). I think this is a safe pick--there is a better chance he goes above his projections (20+ wins, 3.5 ERA) than going below in my view.

13.03 Ryan Garko, 1B, CLE

The more the draft goes on, the happier I am with this pick. A true masher, who can easily post a .500 SLG and 100 RBI (though my projections only ask for .480 and 90). He is not an elite 1B, but when I think "CI", Garko is the type of hitter I imagine.

14.14 Michael Bourn, OF, HOU

Not sure I really needed another base-stealing OF after the Victorino pick. Bourn will drive down my OBP/SLG at a position I should be able to stock up on OPS. But I couldn't resist the temptation of a 40 SB campaign, and Bourn has that potential at the top of the Astros' lineup. Steals and saves are commodities and at this stage in the draft, I had to grab one of the remaining sources available.

15.03 Jeff Francis, P, COL

Francis is a tad volatile but in today's MLB landscape, that's just what you get for a 15th rd pick. But I actually do like Francis' potential as my #4. He plays for a great offense and should be able to get 15-17 wins again. His ERA/WHIP might make me cringe, but if he can just keep it within the 4.2/1.35 range, I can absorb the hit and tack on his wins and K's to my staff.

5.15 Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, Was

He is hitting that time in his career where I might get a career year. A new park, a bit stronger lineup, maybe it equates to bigger numbers. 3B doesn’t seem to be as deep as it once was so I grabbed one here.

6.02 Scott Kazmir, SP, TB

injury..what injury? Maybe more wins in an improved TB team with the usual high number of strikeouts. Nice complement to Peavy to form a core of SP. Usually I have two closers by now. As 5th is the highest I’ve finished and have never been in contention before last year, maybe that strategy is flawed. We’ll see.

7.15 Jim Thome, UT, CHW

Doesn’t help fill scarcity but my early picks are quite low in the slg category, thus I had to suck it up and take the best slugger available. If I get 130 games from him and a .550 slg I will be very happy. Crap, anything over .500 in 500 AB’s would make me happy.

8.02 Dustin Pedroia, MI, BOS

Kind of a homer pick here as I like the kid who plays for my team. Nonetheless, the MI depth always scares me in these drafts. There was no SS worthy of this high a pick and while 2B is deeper this year than in years past due to the emergence of Phillips, Cano, Pedroia etc., we still start 48 MI in this league. It seems like he is solidly entrenched in the top of a potent Boston order and should score runs while having no speed whatsoever. Decent ratios for a MI as he has a bit of pop.

9.15 Lastings Milledge, OF, WAS

PECOTA is quite high on Milledge and I seem to own him in every league. Based on all other kinds of averages, this is a huge stretch and maybe he would have lasted a bit longer but it is obvious that others have access to pecota as well. He has been sitting at the top of the hitter list for quite some time as it seems the potential SB really help him. By adding him to sizemore, young and Kinsler I should have a good chance to be at the top of SB this year. But boy my SLG is struggling…

10.02 Kevin Youkilis, 1B, BOS

Another homer pick. Youkilis is the definition of average for this league in every way except OBP where he helps. His RBI total is dependent on where he hits I the lineup.

11.15 Kosuke Fukudome, OF, CHC

Another PECOTA pick. All the news is good out of Spring training with him either hitting 2nd or 3rd. PECOTA has him at a .900 OPS. I’d take anything over .800 at this point in the draft. Plus, how can you not like saying his name a lot.

12.02 Jeremy Bonderman, SP, DET

I still see potential here even though I appear to be the only one. His K numbers will still be well over 150 and I am hoping that the ratios get better. On a solid Tiger team he may get more wins than his skill level.

13.15 Carlos Marmol, RP, CHC

My first relief pitcher. And he’s not even a guaranteed closer. At this point in the draft the closers are basically gone. Wow! There are some pretty crappy pitchers in that bunch too. This year it seemed like you had to go for 2 or 3 out of the top 9 or hold your breath and pray. When it became apparent that I wouldn’t get anywhere near the top 9 I decided to basically punt saves. Marmol should be the guy in Chicago but even if he is not, his stuff is filthy and he will add some quality innings and a good K rate.

14.02 Mark Reynolds, CI, AZ

Still trying to make up for the power outage at the top of the draft. Reynolds had the highest SLG of any CI left. While he may lose some AB’s to Tracy eventually, I need that stat here.

I hear ya on the queues. However, here's one problem with them:

Say I want a SS with my upcoming pick. The draft is 5 picks away from me. I put my top 3 choices for SS, assuming I will get one. Well, what happens when the draft comes right back down to me several picks later? One of those SS could still be #1 in my queue, but I no longer need one. It is hard to arrange players to cover TWO picks. For those of us on the ends, this becomes slightly problematic. If there was a way to indicate position preference for 2 picks, then the problem would be solved.

Some more complex reasoning for those of you curious how my mind works:

16.14 Mark Ellis, 2B, OAK

D'oh. Should have taken Giambi here. He would have fit in perfectly at the Util slot with his always high OBP. I gave the top 2 a chance to get him, and holt took him before the draft got back to me. As it is, I end up with Ellis, a decent 2B who can fill the spot for me. 80 R/80 RBI would be realistic marks, and I'd be happy with that. Biggest question are his OBP/SLG which is tough to project. I hope for something in the 330/430 range.

17.03 Greg Maddux, P, SD

I really hesitated to draft Maddux, having already rostered Wang. That gives me two guys who will combine for about 200-220 K's. I won't be winning that category it appears. However, Maddux is a very valuable #5 starter at this stage in the draft. Showing only minor regression over the years, he still looks poised for 13-15 wins, a 4.0 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Most importantly, he always pitches his 200 innings, thus maximizing the effect of his ratios (WHIP being his biggest contribution of course) on my staff.

18.14 Chase Headley, 3B, SD

I was thrilled to land Headley who complements the Rolen selection nicely. I just have to hope that either the veteran comeback or emerging star card works for me. Headley could be starting in LF on opening day due to Edmonds' injury (From what I read, Hairston is favorite for LF job, but would play CF in Edmonds' absence). With a full time job, Headley is one of the biggest sleepers of the season. Maybe not Ryan Braun level, but certainly could become a top 10 producing 3B by mid-year. I drafted very conservatively this year, but I was able to nab a huge upside guy with this pick.

19.03 Dan Wheeler, P, TB

I think Wheeler's stats were inflated last year. He isn't a 5+ ERA pitcher. I hope his work as a set-up man yields better results (3.5 ERA, 1.2 WHIP-ish stats) and allows me to plug him in as one of my 9 starters to help ratios, and pick up vulture counting stats. Best case scenario--he ends up closing. Not a long shot with Percival and Reyes as his competition.

20.14 David Dejesus, OF, KC

Hard to believe the guys I am drafting are still starters. I still have a couple spots to fill. Dejesus is a leadoff hitter, and even on the Royals, that means a healthy # of runs scored. His 101 runs scored last year were very under the radar. He also contributes about 10 steals, and 50-60 RBI. His problem last year was his horrendous 330/372. In 05-06 he posted identical 352/445 lines. I would be thrilled if he can return to those OBP/SLG levels for me in 08. Even if he splits the difference to 340/420, he'd be acceptable as a 20th round pick.

re 166. what you do is click the link that toggles between "all players" and "only first player". if you have it set on "all players" then like Bandos said you can specify here what position you want to draft in each rd.

freeform is useful if you prefer to e-mail a designated picker with your queue instructions, rather than loading your queue with players at kafenatid. freeform allows your dp's to select any player.
