0 Subject: RIBC AAA PCL Draft Discussion

Posted by: GoatLocker
- Leader [060151121] Tue, Feb 26, 2008, 18:55

A new thread for the Draft Discussion since we have now started.
Will also get a Rationale Thread up, and we can kick it off when pick 3.01 is made.

As was already pointed out in the other thread, it does work better to do the rationale before you make your next pick.
If we do need to skip people on Rationale's, please put a place holder post in place.

I will be without internet until about 5-6 pm tonight. I have made a short queue available but I don't anticipate any of the players still being around when it gets to me. Just wanted to give you guys the heads up so you dont kill your f5 button if it gets to me before that.

I turned on the clock at 6 hours.
Pause is 1-7AM Eastern Time.
Obviously you can still pick when the clock is paused.

I'm getting ready to walk out of my hotel room to my meeting.
I've set my queue, and I know there is enough to cover round 3.

Probably not round 4, but should be back in 9 or 10 hours.

As the commish I see all queues.
So, if you make it available, all of your DPs plus myself will be capable of making the pick.

Put the late Rationales here, and we can get a moderator to move them over.

I'm back home, so should be able to get off of the queue and make my own picks.

And, will be watching so that I can make picks as needed.

Frankly I would rather things slowed down a bit to allow us to see more games to get information on players trying to earn a spot on the roster of a starting job.

I vote for no clock.

Picks Made 100 Time Per Pick 1:52:13 Picks Left 300 Projected Finish 03/26/08 09:54:14 pm

By my figures, we need to be done sometime on 22 March to be able to run the WW.

We aren't anywhere near making it unless we speed things up.

My plan was to start with 6 hours, which is what RIBC will be doing, and then shift to 4 if need be.
I'm going to see how we do today, but if things don't pick up, will change to 4 and leave it there for the rest of the draft.

Tough pick there for me with Oswalt.
Very surprised to see him available in the 7th round, but I guess like those of you who passed on him, I'm not that high at all on him this year.
Declining K rate, a big increase in WHIP, and his numbers away from home last year were terrible. However, a positive is that I feel he has a better chance to have a good, solid year over some of the younger and more unproven pitchers. Hopefully that knuckleball he's been working on helps!

How many of the picks have gone over 4 hours that a shorter clock would have made a difference?
More to the point.....how much time would we have saved if we had a 4 hour clock.
As we get closer and we need to meet the deadline I think we can adjust things more easily by making better use of DP's.
A shorter clock will do little to move things along but could mean missed picks.
I just think it is too early to panic right now.

I agree that a shorter clock isn't the answer, but what is missed in Cliff's draft analysis is that most picks seem to be made within 45 min, but a few of us are taking almost all of there time when on the queue slowing up the draft.

I believe off the top of my head, that we have had 4 since the clock started go over the 4 hour period.
I have no problem leaving it at 6 for another couple of days, but I would hate seeing us have to get drastic at some point in time.
At some point, people need to start using queues when they can.

5.14 Torii Hunter

Hunter seems to be a pretty consistent OBP/SLG type guy so I expect him to have his usual numbers. I am hoping that his move to the Angels may help his steals since they seem to have a lot of green lights.

6.03 Brian McCann

I had McCann as the last of the 2nd tier catchers so I took him. I expect him to improve some on last years numbers because he is still such a young player. Also the Braves offense should be potent this year in the middle of the order with the addition of Tex and probably more importantly subtraction of *undrafted player*

5.06 Carlos Zambrano, SP, Cubs

When I avoided another SP in the 4th round I effectively lost all the SP's in my queue but one, so I figured it might be time to take another. There really wasn't another SP I was willing to take as my second SP this early.

Zambrano, if he avoids his early season swoon, could give me a second ace to pair with Bedard. He'll have 200 K's +/-, high teens in wins (or more if the Cubs live up to their pre-season billing) and a decent ERA.

6.11 Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, Wash

I wasn't ridiculously high on anyone for this pick so I went looking for value. Zimmerman has ALWAYS hit at every level, until last year. He may play 162 games and has 25 - 30 HR power, should flirt with 100 runs and RBI's, if he can just add an OBP back above the .350 mark I'll be happy.

Oops, I oput my rationales in the wrong thread! Sorry about that guys. Here is the report.

5.09 – Michael Young, SS, TEX

This could prove to be a big mistake. The second I clicked submit I had second thoughts, and I don’t know why. I passed over Jason Bay and Konerko and Adrian Gonzalez, all of whom have much higher SLG. Numbers. But he is a solid R and RBI man, and I need to start going after those. I’m looking for 90+ R and RBI.

6.08 – Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, SD

I had targeted several guys in this round that were taken just before my pick. Vernon Wells was a great pick at 6.01. I also had Mauer and McCann penciled in this round too. But I also had Gonzalez. All indications are that he will have his breakout year this year, at least that is what I am choosing to beleive. So I really like his upside. I had another starting pitcher in mind here as well, but I feel pretty safe that he will be around for a bit. Until the 9th round when he got snatched up. Ugh.

7.09 – Javier Vazquez, SP, CWS

Looking for another starting pitcher alongside Santana. I was looking mainly at K’s, and Vazquez was at the top of my list of remaining pitchers with the most projected K’s. I don’t care much about ERA or WHIP at this point, I just am looking for about 200 strikeouts.

8.08 – Pat Burrell, OF, PHI

My hitting is suffering in a few places, so Burrell is a good fit for my second OF slot. His high OBP and SLG make up for Young’s weaker numbers. He should have another solid year in that Philly lineup. Truth be told, I wanted Victorino because I needed steals, but he went 4 picks earlier.

According to my rankings, I had Burrell ranked 48th on the list of hitters. The fact that I got him in the 119th pick suggests to me that I got some value here.

Gonna just put my last rationales in here for now:

4.16 JJ Putz, RP SEA This was a surprise to see arguably the best reliever still here at pick #64. I thought about taking him at 3.01 so this was an easy choice.

5.01 Jim Thome, UTL, CHW This was a much harder choice. I wanted Corey Hart here, but he was gone already. So were a few other offensive players I was surprised to see gone. So I took the best available slugger left, which happened to be Thome. Barring injury, he should put up good numbers yet again and will be a nice addition despite his inflexibility.

6.16 Kelly Johnson, 2B ATL This was the point where I came to the conclusion that I did not like drafting on the turn in a league this deep. It is almost impossible to plan ahead and you see your queue shrink into nothing over those 30 picks. I was reaching a bit for players because I didnt think they would last the next 30. I wanted Renteria or Furcal here, and they went at 6.14 and 6.15. Johnson was going to be 7.01 anyways so it worked out well. I have him projecting in the top 5 2B this season so this will be a good pick.

7.01 Jeff Francouer, OF ATL Frenchy was a reach but I knew he wouldnt last until my next pick. I like his upside and if he can combine the power of 2006 and the discipline of 2007 he could do some special things this year. If anything he should provide decent SLG and RBI this year.

8.16 James Shields, SP TB I was surprised to see Shields fall this far. He was one of the best all-around pitchers in the AL last year while pitching in the toughest division in baseball. I project him to continue to play at the level, but even if there is a little dropoff this is a nice pick at #128.

9.01 Jason Isringhausen, RP STL I was orginally going to go for hitting in these two picks but I went pitching because there was such great value here. Another guy who I felt slipped too far. He gets his 30 saves with good percentages year in and year out. Good solid RP, especially for a #2.

9.09 – Chad Cordero, RP, WAS

This was the most amazing round yet. Five of the eight players picked before mine were all in my queue. Cordero was not one of them. The 5 RP’s that went off the board since my 8.08 pick were all on my short list for this round. Again, Cordero was not one of them.

This is a strategic pick here. Four managers picking after me in this round still don’t have a closer, and with the closers that just went off the board, I felt I needed to pick up what was immediately left in order to stay (at least initially) competitive in saves.

10.08 – Jacoby Ellsbury, OF, BOS

Not many base stealers left. This pick was between Uggla, Blalock and Ellsbury, the former two falling off the board a few picks before me.

Ellsbury has been on my radar all draft. I expect a great year from him in that Boston lineup. He should get over 30 steals and provide decent OBP. I really do like his upside.

K-Rod to the rescue. Last season in AA I waited and waited on closers and was the bain of my season.
So, decided to go with a top 5 closer this season and then go from there.
Looking at right around 45 saves and ratios of 2.96 and 1.23.
Will help me in 3 cats and won't hurt in wins (4?) or Ks (95).

Had actually ranked him higher than this, but due to his current issues, figure I could wait longer to draft him.
Just wasn't willing to try to go another round.
Didn't think he would get back if I waited.
Looking at somewhere around 220+ Ks, and ratios around 3.19 and 1.27, 14 wins or so.
Good young SP to take a risk with on anchoring my starters.

5.13 Miguel Tejada, SS, HOU

Some say Tejada is washed up or that he's on the decline. The fact that his name appears on the Mitchell report doesn't help either. I think he'll rebound to have a strong year though. The move to Houston will only help to improve his numbers. It would not surprise me to see him get 100+ RBIs and 90+ R.

6.04 Billy Wagner, RP, NYM

It just felt like the right time to take a closer. The top closers were coming off the draft board and I didn't think I would have a good quality closer if I waited another 30 picks with my next pick. I'm very happy with who I got. Wagner should be a great source of steals as I expect the Mets to be one of the top teams this year.

7.13 Mariano Rivera, RP, NYY

I'm very surprised to see Mariano Rivera available at this point of the draft. I really didn't plan on taking another closer here, but Rivera's just too good to pass up right now. His numbers weren't as impressive last season, but he's still among the league's best closers in my opinion.

8.04 Shane Victorino, OF, PHI

I was faced with a tough decision here. My team still lacked a real source for steals. Juan Pierre would have filled that void very nicely. But could my team absorb that .350 SLG? As much as I want 60 SBs, I felt more comfortable taking someone with some more pop in their bat. That is why I decided to go with Victorino here. He may only get me around 30 steals, but at least he doesn't hurt me in the other categories.

9.13 Johnny Damon, OF, NYY

Just like with Victorino, I needed Damon's speed to stay competitive in the steals category. I'm expecting at least 25 SBs from Damon along with 100 R's and 75 RBI's. His 2007 season seems to indicate a decline, but he should still be able to reach those marks with ease.

My round 13 queue will probably make it to round 14.

However, in round 14:

If I picked a CI in round 13, do not pick another CI in round 14.
If I picked a MI in round 13, do not pick another MI in round 14.

3.03 Alex Rios, OF, TOR

Speed is good. Not interested in a closer yet. Too many similar starters to choose from. Definitely going for some power this time.

Rios wasn't even on my radar after my 2nd round pick, however the picks that were made since then required a change of thought. Chipper, gone. VMart, Ordonez, Pena, gone. DLee, Granderson, CLee, Guillen, all gone. It seems that noone on my queue is safe, so I'm gonna have to reach to get the players I want. Almost considered changing course and going with pitching, but I really wanted to get a big bat here.

The extra steals is what had me worried that Rios might be snatched up before the 4th round. I don't think many regard him as a legitimate power threat yet, even with the Derby Crown last year. But I can see this being the year that he finally puts together a big six months. His first couple of seasons, he was too skinny and seemed to have trouble with endurance. His 3rd season was the breakout that was ruined by a staph infection, what a heartbreaker, the East was up for grabs that year. As he gets bigger, the stats also get bigger. This guy has Vlad potential. Last year, he had the huge first half, the Derby crown, and an all around great season, but he tired out in September. This year has Rios written all over it, if someone on the coaching staff realizes this and puts him in the 3 hole this year, myself and the Jays will be very successful.

4.07 Dan Haren, SP, ARI

Still not down with picking a closer. Hoping Russell Martin would make it to me, he naturally didn't. Now gotta go for a starter. Especially since I had a good feeling that Jim Thome would make it back to me. When will I learn? Who knows, Haren might not have made it back either, and he really stood out to me amongst the other pitchers this time around. The other pitchers being: Verlander, Beckett, Harang, Lackey. There was just too much upside with Haren for me to let him slip though. This guy is a machine. Look at his last 3 years, he is literally a machine. Now he gets to move to the NL and have Orlando Hudson playing behind him. Not only that, but he should be somewhat ahead of the learning-the-hitters curve since he originated in the NL. 2008 NL Cy Young, may as well put Haren's name on it now.

5.10 Aaron Harang, SP, CIN

The whole top tier of closers passed me by. Jim Thome passed me by. Still don't know if I could have justified a Util pick in round 5 but it would have been nice to grab another power bat with huge upside. Swisher in a nice offense would have been decent as well. A few too many question marks with the other bats to keep me away from my debate between Harang and Chris Young. Pitching in Petco, and staring at his first half numbers made Young verrrry tempting, but I went with what I thought was a safer pick. Last year finally opened my eyes on Harang, and I am hoping that this year he will continue to become a household name. He became a strikeout machine down the stretch last year, and I feel that he can at least make it through one year of being ridden by Dusty Baker to top 200 K's again. I now have another horse in the rotation to make me form a solid ERA, WHIP and K foundation. The wins are a crapshoot, and if Harang can get some help this year he could sneak into the Cy Young picture again. Could have won it last year on a different team.

Sorry for the delay guys, but I do have one question: How in the world was I skipped?!?

Last night around 8:45 or 9 I checked in and we were going down the snake for round 21 stuck on Gurudan. I checked again around midnight and it was still at Gurudan. I checked again around 2am and it was STILL ON GURUDAN.

I log in this morning around 9am and its showing Rob Thayer is up for his round 21 pick. I checked in just now and I've suddenly missed round 21 and 22 and we are suddenly 5 picks beyond me? And I've lost both players that I had qued up (bruce and gordon).

Looking back over the times that picks were made it appears I was actually on the clock as of 7:35pm last night. I know I could have 'left a que' and avoided this. But I check in obsessively throughout the day.

I'm not asking for any redo of picks. Looking at the times that are recorded for making picks, it appears everybody has done exactly what they are supposed to do. I just needed to vent as I'm more than a little irritated.

OK all.
All teams are now loaded.

Two teams only have 24 players.
Khahan due to Colon not being in the data base.

Gurudan due to Cueto not being in the data base.

In order to retain ownwhip of those two players, you must leave one roster position open.

If that postition gets filled, the player will then be a FA when they hit the data base.

Please take a look at your teams and make sure I did not make any mistakes.

I'm going to verify the Waiver Order, and then we'll be off and running.
