1.01 Alex Rodriguez 3B NYY

This was the first time I had the first pick to pick a draft pick, and I decided to go with the #1 pick mostly because I have never ever had a #1 pick in fantasy before. I thought about going with #6 if only because of the draft pick results thread, but I really wanted to see what picking #1 was all about.

So I picked A-Rod #1. A pretty safe pick - He has great numbers year in and year out is pretty safe from injuries. And unlike most big sluggers he can steal a few bases. I dont see how I can go wrong here.

This was a very difficult choice for me, as I wanted to take Hanley Ramirez, however, the potential lack of offense and protection of Cabrera scared me. When you are picking this high, you also want close to a sure thing and Hanley has only performed at an elite level for 1 year.

I think Wright will be a consistent 5 category player, he might not get the SB's of Hanley, but put him down for 30 HR and 100+ RBI with good Runs and Steals, I'll take that at a premium position.

1.03 Hanley Ramirez, SS, Fla

I got to pick my draft position 4th, and I hoped I wouldn't have to pick between 4th or lower. Perusing some 2007 stats and some 2008 projections, it was clear there were only 3 major 5-cat producers for our league. Arod, Wright and Hanley. Of the 3, Hanley had a boatload more SB's, one of the harder categories to fill without killing one or both ratios.

I knew Pujols was going to be a question mark, and that Arod would go #1. If I got to pick high I knew the guy I wanted was Hanley. If I wasn't going to get him however, I would rather take a later-round pick and get to make my 2nd round pick earlier. Toral made my decision a bit easier though, as now I could pick 3rd instead of 4th. I decided to gamble that Hanley would get past Aggy, and if he didn't I was ok with taking Wright. I don't think I could've picked 4th though, as the prospect of missing all 3 big 5-cat goons would've made me want to draft later, maybe even 16th.

1.04 Chase Utley, 2B, Phi

I had the choice to either pick fourth or in the bottom half of the draft. It was a tough decision as there are a lot of nice options this year for a first round pick and picking lower in the first round would allow me to get a better hitter in the second. I was looking to see who would be available to me at the 4 slot and if I didn’t find anyone that jumped out at me, I would’ve chosen to pick in the bottom half. After comparing some numbers, I found Utley to be a cut above the rest of who I figured would be available at 4 and decided to choose that slot.

Utley had a great year last year hitting to the tune of a .976 OPS to go along with 100+ runs and RBIs while only playing in 132 games due to injury. His 160 (the amount of games he played the year before) game projection would put him at just about 125 runs and RBIs. Throw in double digit steals and you have someone to build your team around. Oh, and he plays 2nd base. Utley’s OPS was over 80 points higher than the second highest OPS out of 2nd baseman last year (Upton). Utley’s overall impressive numbers combined with him being in a class of his own among 2nd baseman made him my pick at fourth overall.

1.05 Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Det

I decided after some thought that I would take Albert Pujols in the top tier making 5 players there (along with A-Rod, Wright, Ramirez and Cabrera), so I chose the 5th position.

There are 3 high quality 3bmen (4 with Braun) and somewhat more of a dropoff afterwords than at some other positions so I wanted to grab one of the top 3. Cabrera should still be getting better and moves to a better hitter's park in the middle of a stronger lineup. I hope for .410/.590 with 110 runs and 120 RBI.

1.06 Jose Reyes, SS, NYM

Second half slump in 2007 or not, Reyes is a fantasy stud. My SB category is covered with my first pick here, he'll hit for more power then he did last year, continue to walk a decent amount and score a ton of runs. Hard to pass on a middle infielder with this potential here.

Could have taken an earlier pick, but was really looking at being as close to the middle of each round as I could be.
8 was already gone, so I was content to take 7.
Until I looked at the thread and what had happened out of the 7th slot.
Not a Problem, guess I'll just have to prove the limited stats wrong.

Lots of choices with this pick, but was very content to get Big Papi.
The injuries sucked off some power, but probably helped increase his BA.
I'm looking for more of the same, with hopefully his power coming back to what we have seen in the past.

A good starting point.

1.08 Matt Holiday, OF COL - I purposely took the 8th slot in the draft thinking that it would leave me with an elite first pick in the first round, while still finding a great talent in round 2. Never did I think the decision would be as tough as it was though.

I was originally leaning towards Pujols, and then Ryan Howard because of his greater RBI total. But right before I hit the button I went back to Matt Holiday, who probably has slightly more upside then the both of them, and he averages more games per year as well. While the past is not necessarily a perfect indicator of future returns, Holliday last year had more RBI, Runs, SB and a higher slugging than both Pujols and Howard. Only Pujols OBP of .429 eclipsed Matt Holiday's of .405. So after looking at the numbers I was swayed.

I've also noticed in the 2 other RIBC drafts currently running Holliday was chosen 2nd and 4th, so maybe getting him at 8th was less of a reach than I originally thought.

1.09 Johan Santana, SP, NYM

I was happy to get a draft position right in the middle. Last year for the first time I had the first position and I did not draft well at all. I missed out on MI’s (didn’t pick my first MI until round 12). So I thought this year that I would try the middle spot and maybe I wouldn't miss out on anything.

I was shocked to see that Santana made it down this far. I was originally deciding between Ryan Howard, Rollins and Crawford. But my pitching has always struggled in the RIBC, so I am happy to pick the best pitcher in the game. And Santana’s move to the NL should be a vast improvement from Minnesota. 250+ K, 19-20 W, Sub-3 ERA & WHIP under 1.00. I think he is a steal at #9.

1.10 Jimmy Rollins, SS, PHI

I could have chosen to pick 4th, but preferred being near the middle, 10th seemed to be a safe choice to still get a top player.

Noticed the draft had started when I was on deck. So the quick queue became Rollins, then Howard. Fielder was considered as well. Definitely still had my choice of top players. Was hoping to have an easier decision, but I won't complain about having some choices. Went with the shortstop due to my career long middle infield woes. Also, picking a reigning MVP can't possibly hurt my team, right [undrafted]? If I could say his name, it might make a better point, but the fact that he is still undrafted shows that I've been burned by ex-MVP's before. I like to believe this year will be different, the Phillies had 3 first rounders, so I like my odds of avoiding a burn this year.

Was less than thrilled with my draft position.
I wanted to be somewhere near the middle but would have preferred to be 6-8.
It worked out well enough by getting 12th.

Went with a power hitter with this pick.
Wanted to have a solid base to build on.
My prediction is Howard will have his "breakout year" and this will be the last year for a while that he slips to #12.
In future years I will expect him to be a top 5 pick.

1.13 Prince Fielder. 1B, MIL

My draft position choices were quite limited at this point. I decided to take the 13th spot to simply get as close to the middle as I could.

I was THIS close to getting either Albert Pujols or Ryan Howard with the 13th pick! That would have been a great way to start off the draft, as I have both ranked in my top 6. Prince Fielder isn't too shabby, but he's a bit of a risk. Was last year a breakout season and a sign of things to come? Or was it a fluke? With only 2 full seasons under his belt, it's not a sure thing that Fielder will hit close to 50 homers this time around. Obviously I'm hoping he can come close to last year's numbers, much the same way Howard performed after his amazing 2006 season.

1.14 Carl Crawford, OF, TB

I was hoping to get a high draft pick but as the last to choose I just got what was left. I have been picking towards the tail end of the draft in last years baseball and last years football so I had hoped for something different. Oh well. My original intent with my first round pick was to get one of the 3 first round shortstops but with the 14th pick I doubted that would happen so I decided to try and secure stolen bases in the first few rounds. Crawford does that without hurting me in other categories. Plus supposedly the Rays may be somewhat competitive this year and he could benefit from an improved offense but I doubt they will be that much better.

1.15 Ryan Braun, 3b, MIL

Went with the best player available here with my first pick. Braun was the
highest rated player on my board. Braun is young and also a stud.
He led the NL with a .634 SLG last year and should start me in the right
direction for dominance in this category.

I wanted to somebody who could just pound the ball. Was looking for a player that would start out by helping to prop up SLG, OBP and rbi's.

2.01 Grady Sizemore OF, Cle
Looking for a little bit of speed here. 25+ SB is always good, but add in a solid OBP and a near .500 SLG and you have a well rounded 5 category player.

REALLY wanted Sizemore or Teixiera here and Khahan took them both! Pronk really struggled last year so I guess this could be a risky pick, but I think he will bounce back to full form this year. I didnt like my other options in Guerrero, Ramirez, or sorriano. I also told myself I would not take a pitcher in the early rounds. Heres hoping that Hafner can repeat his 06 campaign when he hit .439 OBP, .659 SLG and 117 RBIS. Ill actually be happy if he hits the average of his last 2 years.

2.03 Alfonso Soriano, OF, CHC

Soriano defintely fit my bill of wanting to secure stolen bases while helping in other categories. I am hoping his legs remain relatively injury free this year. I see he has already hurt his hand this year but my projections do show all around improvements over last years substellar performance.

Guerrero is no longer the 5-tool player he once was, but he's still one of the league's best sluggers. While he has lost some speed on the basepaths, the other parts of his gave have remained consistent throughout his career. I took him here with the expectations of a .950+ OPS season with 120+ RBIs.

With my power hitter on board I wanted to look at balancing out my team with either a pitcher or speedster who produces runs and high OBP.
What better way to do it than with the #2 pitcher.
My prediction is Santana struggles this year in his new home.....so essentially I got the best pitcher in baseball.
A true workhorse with low ERA/WHIP plenty of K's and Wins.
I live near SD so I may make an appointment with the DS skipper to talk about getting Peavy a few more save opps as well.

Hoped that Upton or Peavy would fall back to me. Had Chipper and Victor in mind if they didn't.

Had to go with Upton once my pick came up. The chance to solidify steals and middle infield in the first 2 rounds is hard to pass up. I now have 2 speedster middle infielders that can hold their own at the plate. Upton should continue to be a threat in a surprisingly dangerous Rays' lineup. He seems to be quite good in the outfield, that can only help him at the plate, a clear mind and confidence can go a long way. He has always been a big bat, the question was always the glove, I think now that he has found a home in the outfield, the pieces are set up for 2008 to be a humungous year.

The best hitter on the board in Round 2, according to my data after Upton went in the previous pick. I wanted the steals from Upton but Manny is solid. He appears very healthy and is in a contract year, so he should be motivated. Expecting 90+ R, 100+ RBI, OBP over .400 and SLG over .550.

2.09 - Lance Berkman, 1B/OF Hou I had a long queue of people after I made my first pick whom I thought might make it back to me for my second pick. These included Peavy, Pronk, Teixeira and Vlade. When none of them were there I made a new small list with Chipper, Berkman, Abreu and Dunn. All in all, every player on this list has a flaw, the flexibility that Berkman allows my roster to have, as well as the hope that he rebounds from an off yeat made him my choice.

Potentially the best fantasy C out there, especially since he takes a break from behind the plate to play first base, and he generally misses no more then 15 games a season. Good production and OBP from a shallow fantasy position, the only thing he won't do is run. I had targeted Manny here but he went three picks sooner.

2.12 Bobby Abreu , OF, NYY

At this point I was looking for a hitter who can make a 5-category contribution. Abreu is something of a risk here at 34, coming off a bad season. However hitters this age often decline in 2-season chunks rather than regularly season to season and I figure Abreu likely to bounce back in 2008, even at 34. I see .390/.460 with 215 R + RBI distributed according to where he hits and 20+ steals.

2.14 Derrek Lee, 1B, CHC

After starting strong in SB's with my round 1 pick, I decided to go OPS-heavy with a couple big bats at 2.14 and 3.03. There seems to be an inordinate amount of top-tier SP arms this year after Santana/Peavy, so I knew I could grab a SP in round 4 or 5 that would be very similar to the ones available here. My only worry was that the RP run would begin shortly after my 3.03 pick, but I felt it was too early to take an RP arm. Sure enough, I got both a great SP and a great RP in rounds 4/5.

My queue with 9 picks to go was: Upton, Beltran, Berkman, Abreu, Manny, D. Lee and C. Lee. I was hoping I would be able to grab 2 of these 7 guys. Five of them went in those 9 picks however, and Carlos Lee got nabbed right before my 3rd round pick.

The 'deep' position of 1B was looking very shallow by the time my pick came up. The last two .900+ OPS guys left were Lee, Helton and Pena, who has performed at that level for 1 year only. I felt Lee had a bit more upside then Todd in all categories except OBP, so I went there.

I think this is a risky pick, however, I thought Phillips might go mid 2nd second, so I was happy he was there. Again, a good 5 category player who will be batting clean up on a good offensive team at a premium position. I was considering Granderson and Lee, but was hoping on them would fall to early 3rd round.

This was the guy I was targetting for this pick. A breakout year last year, demonstrating rare 5-point skills - he is essentially Jimmy Rollins except that he is an OF, and thus not quite as valuable. Still, the combination of SLG and speed is a nice thing to have.

3.01 CC Sabathia, SP CLE

This was a pick made mostly because I was worried about what could come off the board in the next 30 - I wanted to get a top-flight SP to anchor my staff. I was hoping Peavy would fall this far but I took the next best thing. Hopefully CC will continue his success from last year and the high inning total doesnt come back to bite him.

I was thrilled that Lee fell here, a 35 HR guy who is a threat to steal 15 bases on an improving offensive team. I normally try to get position players early as I did with Wright and Phillips, but I think OF depth is not great this year. I considered taking a front line SP pitcher here, but could give up getting a power OF.

With my queue running out with Carlos Lee dissapearing right before my pick, I dug a little deeper to find a big SLG bat. Other guys like Ichiro, Jeter, Pena, Markakis, Ordonez either didn't fit my team very well, or I didn't want to gamble on repeat performances. I get a nice solid .900+ OPS 3B bat in round 3, so no complaints.

I like to pick up an MI in the 1st rounds where a league has this slot, especially one as big as this one. Otherwise it seems like I always find myself scraping the barrel for the 3rd middle infield slot. Derek Jeter is geeting up there at 33, but I think I can count on him for one more season as a top producer. I look to him to put up .380/.450 with 100+ runs, 80 RBI and a dozen steals. With both him and Abreu I have to watch not to beccome too Yankee-heavy in case the whole team goes down the tank, but maybe there's a Yankee fan in the league I can pawn these guys off on a for a profit; there often is.

Last year in the RIBC I stocked up on starting pitching early, to compensate for my lack of MI’s and Closers. That proved to be disastrous. So this year I decided I wasn’t going to put myself in that situation again. I need to a solid MI in Round 3. Hopefully Jeter, Guillen or Tulowitzki falls to me in the next round.

So Jeter falls four spots in front of my pick. I was hopeful that he would have made it to me. But I like Guillen here, especially with his 1B flexibility. I’m expecting 90 R, and 90+ RBI.

I made up my mind that I was going to take a starting pitcher with either this pick or the next one to ensure that my team had at least one legitimate ace. It came down to either Beckett or Webb. They both look even, maybe a slight edge to Beckett in the W's department. However, he's also the more injury-prone (blisters) of the two. So I decided to play it safe by taking Webb.

4.03 Justin Morneau

After using my third round pick on a low slugging high steals guy I knew I needed to get some slugging out of this pick and Morneau came up as the top slugger available.

4.04 Robinson Cano, 2B, NYY

Beckett looked tempting here, but I didn't want to overdo it with the pitching this early in the draft. I thought about picking up somebody who could get me SBs, but Roberts and Figgins were already gone. The other base stealing threats seemed like a reach at this point, so I went with a solid hitting 2B in Cano. He won't get me any steals but he'll help me a lot in the other 4 categories. I believe Cano has a real shot at a 100 R/100 RBI/.875+ OPS season.

4.08 – Jonathan Paplebon, RP, BOS

I missed out on closers last year as well, so I wasn’t going to let that happen this year. Will this be the start of the closer run? Considering the 3 drafts going on, my pick of Paplebon (#56 overall) was by far lower than anyone so far, so does that mean I got a real “value” pick here? Or perhaps the other leagues are over-rating him and I bought high?

Since only 5 other closers have been picked since this one, I probably reached.

He is a nice complement to Santana. Over 40 saves, ERA under 2 and a sub .900 WHIP and a K/9 ratio of almost 12. I now have an excellent pitching foundation. Time to work on the offense.

I had a 3 person queue of Hart, Hawpe and Helton, not that I only wanted players with last names beginning with H, but I did want another offensive player. In the end I went with Hart cause I felt I needed some speed, and I thought Helton would fall to my next pick. Obviously as you'll see with the next rationale that didn't work out quite the way I planned as Helton went next.

Hart brings decent pop, steals and an ok OBP. Nothing spectacular, but who is at this point. He has nice upside, but is also a slight risk after a late season swoon last year.

4.10 Todd Helton, 1B, COL
Know some think he is on the downhill side, but still think he fits a need in this format from the OBP / SLG side of things.
And glad to see somebody else (see previous rationale) thought this also.
Expect the Rockies to be real good again this year, and for Helton to be right in the middle of the mix.
After 4 rounds, I'm real happy with the way things are shaking out and taking care of the first couple of cats that I wanted to.
