Here is the draft selection order. When your turn is up, fill your name in on the blank line to indicate which draft pick you would like in the first round. Remember that the draft rounds snake, meaning if you have the first pick in the first round, you will have the last pick in the second round and vice versa.
If there are any questions please let me know. Once we have made our selections and all teams are registered in kafenatid, the draft will begin.
1 wolfer 2 KSOLOIVE 3 Joe 4 kooldad 5 philflyboy 6 Jason 7 frew 8 adamtkay 9 Vampire Weekend 10 twarpy 11 beastiemiked 12 hose 13 nando 14 SamP 15 judy 16 Jeremy Toce

Funny story... the ID for this league is 140467 ...yahoo makes 6s look like 5s because the default font is small, so I went to 140457, put in the password "santana," and somehow got entered in a Twins league. Maybe that's just a common password this year...

When it gets to my turn...
I'll take the highest slot left, so anyone can fill it in for me. What a crummy start -- knocks out several of my possible choices already so I need to dig deeper for my #1...

Jason,
It looks like three more managers need to sign up for Yahoo. Where are they in the draft selection order? How is the Kafenatid sign up going?

I'm going to e-mail kooldad and see if he can hustle it along. All but two have signed up for kafenatid... thats the most pressing issue since we can't start the draft without everyone signed up at kafenatid and the selection order finished.
Hopefully after kooldad picks we'll be on our way.

Jaydog, what's up man. I had a quick inquiry for ya. You don't wanna use the Yahoo live draft even though it's not a keeper league? Not that it makes a difference to me either way, and I am def one of those people who would be annoyed with a computer-drafted team if I missed the draft, but you know, just a speed inquiry.

Kafenatid is a really great drafting site. You won't be disappointed. The key is that the managers pay attention and check their computers regularly -- every 2/3 hours -- or set a queue if they are going to be away from the computer.

SamP, I love a life draft but the logistics behind trying to get 16 people together for a 25 round draft are nearly impossible considereing schedules and time zones. A live draft would take around 5-6 hours at a minimum and would be nearly impossible to scheudle with everyone. The kafenatid format allows for a slower draft and because of the draft queue and designated picker functionality allows for the draft to progress steadily.

Please, please, please set up a queue and make sure that it has a lot of players in it. I am going to pause the first round untill SamP picks. I have said in all of my e-mails that the first round will be untimed, so I cannot change that now, but for here on out the clock will be honored. We need to finish on average about 8 rounds per week to be finished by opening day so please everyone do your part to make your picks quickly or have a full queue set up so the DP's can select for you.

keep whining, there are no shortcuts -- that's the way it is! Slow and steady with a link up to the server each time you make a move -- that's the slowdown point.

We sould be flying along. I have a feeling though the people that check this thread already know about the positive aspects of the site though. If not, set up your queue and make a DP aware. We should cruise from here on out.

Correct frew, OBP and SLG are two separate categories.
The draft is progressing nicely now and we are on pace to finish before the March 25th opening day. As long as there are no long delays we shouldn't need to take any action to move the draft along.
Thanks for everyones cooperation, its been a fun and interresting draft so far and I'm looking forwrad to finishing up and starting the season.

It seems pretty clear that we are an evening (5 pm to midnight) and morning (6 am to noon) drafting group, but people STILL need to leave Q's so that we can make progress.
Hopefully, people will leave Q's over the weekend when there is no clock so that we keep moving along...
If you are going to be out, leave a message here so folks are not waiting and checking in without knowing...

Good point Judy.
A few of us are taking advantage of the draft queues but most are not.
The sooner the draft is over the more time we have for wheeling and dealing. We are in good shape time wise but the end of the drafts typically move slower as the player pool gets thinner so we need to make as much progress now as possible.
I'm always available to pick for people even if they do not have a queue set up as well so if you are going to be unavailable for any extended period of time and would like to send in your picks through my e-mail address... feel free.

We need to speed this up. We didn't even finish one round on Thursday. Trust the Q system -- or check your computer more often.
If you don't leave a Q and are going to be out of touch, please post it here so we don't keep wasting time checking in to see if any picks have been made!
I worry that we will be even slower this weekend... and that would NOT be good!

I'm going to send out a mass e-mail re-encouraging people to use the Queue system.
Even if we continue at this pace however we are still in good shape. We have over two weeks untill the 25th and we're almost a third finished with the draft. I'd obviously like to finish as soon as possible so that there is time to work the waiver wire, but I am not concerned with the current progress.

InfernO -- where are you? -- Just because the draft is paused does not mean you shouldn't continue to make picks!
Please be considerate and make a pick and then set a 3 person Q for your next turn.
The rest of us are waiting for you to act!

Why is the draft paused on the weekends? I think we should unpause it and move the clock to 4 hours.

beastie -- I agree -- we need to move to a 4 hour clock to force people to use Q's. RIBC is a league that REQUIRES respect of its participants and that includes: making timely picks, using Q's and/or at least letting the others know what your timing plans are!
Since Thursday morning, we have made a total of 14 picks. We need to be completing at least 2-4 rounds per day to finish on time without too much stress.
We have wasted this entire weekend and I am sure there are more teams managers who have been checking into Kafenatid on a regular basis to see if there has been any movement.

Hey all. I understand the frustration but the weekend pause is there so people can take time off of checking websites, player lists, etc... Some people take time off on the weekends and do not have access to a computer so while its unfair to keep everyone waiting, its also unfair to force people to be glued to a computer during a weekend. I realize that everyone should have a queue set up for this reason but if we make good progress during the week, the weekend pause should not matter.
I'm going to reduce the clock to 4 hours and will consider reducing it further if we cannot make better progress during the week.
The karenatid site does not allow you to set different clocks for different time periods so the pause is the only way to give people a chance to sleep.
If we can finish 2-3 rounds per day over the next 7-8 days we will be just about finished with plenty of time to spare.

Well there no point in moving it to 4 hours if you aren't going to change the weekend to at least 8 hours. My weekdays are more hectic then weekends and I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat.
Just change the clock back to 8 hours on Friday night and back to 4 on Sunday night(or probably keep it at 8 for next Monday since it's st. patty's day). That should take care of not being able to set different clocks for different periods.

I'll see how much progress we make this week. If we need to keep the clock going over the weekend I'll do it. I'd probably just leave the clock at 4 hours and just tell people to use a queue if they don't think they'll be around.

Thanks to everyone in the last stretch for using the queue system. As I expected, the last few picks flew by.
I can't emphasize to the rest of the league how much this helps. We could easily go through 3 or 4 rounds a day if everyone was using the queue's. You may think that you are a observant drafter, but even saving 20 minutes here or there because someone has a queue set up will help out tremendously.
If you are not going to be actively sitting in front of the draft hitting refresh (like I know many of us are) please set up a queue and make sure you keep enough players in it so that you can make your picks in a timely fashion.
Again, thanks to all who are helping keep this thing moving.

Jaydog has been discussing your league’s draft situation with me. I usually don’t intercede in the affairs of RIBC qualifying leagues, but in this instance, some counsel seems warranted.
The draft software at kafenatid has served us well for many years. For the past few years, a typical draft has averaged approx 24 picks per day. At that pace, a 16-manager 25-round draft should require about 17 days to complete. On that basis, your draft was started in plenty of time to finish in advance of opening day.
AA leagues tend to have a fair number of new managers who are unfamiliar with the normal expectations for these drafts, or the mechanics of the kafenatid system, or both. Usually, after a round or two, people get the hang of it, and the draft progresses without significant incidents. Occasionally, though, one or two managers are habitual offenders, creating a widespread sense of agitation for the rest of the league.
So first, let me state the general expectations for this type of draft: 1. The clock will generally be set in the range of 4-8 hours. Please understand that the purpose of the clock is not to allow that amount of time per pick. It is only to give everyone ample notice when a pick is due, or about to be due. A manager should only be taking advantage of the full clock when the draft has been moving quickly, and thereby getting to his/her pick earlier than expected. 2. The system allows for each manager to establish a queue, which – if made available – can be used by the commish and any designated pickers to make a pick when that manager is unlikely to be present. It is not generally expected that a manager will set up a queue 10 picks in advance of his pick; most managers would want to be able to react to more recent developments. However, when a pick will be due within the next 2 or 3, it is reasonable (and expected) to make use of that feature if the picker may not be available when the pick is due. 3. If a manager knows of certain limitations on availability, he/she should make other managers aware of the potential delay, and efforts should be made to work around those situations – via use of telephone, or even contingent instructions to a designated picker via email. This forum is the best place to post those notices, and to solicit others to help out in those instances.
Looking at your league’s situation, things seemed to be going well until Thursday, when the draft bogged down. Turning off the clock for the weekend was obviously not a good idea. Some managers may have even considered that as a suggestion that the draft would not resume until Monday. Since this morning, however, the person who failed to appear this weekend also failed to set up a queue after his 7th rounder, and once again timed out immediately after the turn. Whether that was due to ignorance, or inconsideration, or circumstances beyond his control is unknown. Fortunately, you’ve recently had a burst of activity, much of that stimulated via queues. Single time-outs can slow things down, but multiple time-outs are real draft killers.
I do not think that is it a good idea to shorten the clock to less than four hours – yet. But I do think that you could implement some agreements that would help keep these blockages from recurring.
1. Eliminate the weekend pause. 2. In the event that a pick is skipped, the following rules will apply (a) The skipped manager will continue to be skipped until all picks have been made up. (b) A skipped manager who has made up the skipped picks will have future clocks reduced by one hour for each time-out, subject to a minimum limit of one hour per pick. (c) In addition to allowing 4 hours per pick, a second clock will be monitored such that two consecutive picks must be made within 5 hours, three successive picks must be made within 6 hours, etc. This will need to be administered manually by the commissioner. In no event, however will any manager (who is otherwise current) have less than one hour to pick.
I know that last item seems complex, but let me explain by example.
If manager A exhausts his 4 hour clock, then manager B will have only 1 additional hour to make his pick. When waiting for manager A to pick, manager B should be setting up a 2-player queue if he/she might be unavailable after the timeout. Similarly, manager C will have at least one hour to pick, but no more time than that if the cumulative time for picks 1, 2 and 3 would be more than 6 hours. Again, this is because that manager has had ample opportunity to set up a short queue.
Stated another way, if you are second in line, you know that you have at least 5 hours to get your pick done. If you are third in line, you know you have at least 6 hours. And if you are 4th in line, you should have at least 7 hours. You have plenty of time to notice that your pick is approaching, and you have plenty of time to construct a reasonable length queue if your availability is questionable.
The purpose is not to “punish” those who come after laggards, but rather to try to enforce the use of queues when the list would be short.
Hopefully, these situations would be rare. (Usually, they are unnecessary!) But they would at least ensure that timeouts do not multiply and compound. And in the event that the draft pace picks up, the commish could relax implementation of these cumulative standards. In particular, if a historically conscientious manager can see in advance that he has a potential problem, he could appeal to the commish for an appropriate accommodation.
Slow drafts like this provide an opportunity for everyone to be able to make thoughtful picks on a schedule that should be workable for everyone. Hopefully, with better awareness of established expectations and protocols, you'll get this back on track without further snags.

Dave Frew is in fact my name.
As for the draft, it is harder for me to draft on the weekends, but it doesn't mean i am opposed. I would rather be slightly inconvenienced on the weekend if that means i have more time to trade and waiver before the season starts.
I like the idea of the punishment of clock too.

Does anyone remember if Inferno (JeremyToce) was ever signed up in the yahoo league. I seem to remember that when I checked last week we had 14 teams signed up and when I checked today there were only 13. This may mean that he pulled himself out. I have another team waiting in the wings to pick up if he withdraws but I'm going to give him untill tomorrow afternoon to get back to me. If I don't hear from him by then, we'll make the switch.

Jason,
Why not bring the new guy in at a specific round # -- say for round #10. It'll give him some time to get ready before he has to draft.
How will kafenatid handle that? Ask Fred. I think once the draft positions are set, they might not be able to be changed. You might need to DP all his choices.

He's already taken Soria (a closer) with his 8th pick and I'm going to get a queue of 5-10 players from him so that I can make his 9th and 10th round picks for him. By the time it comes back to the 11th round, we should have him fully integrated into the draft.

A couple of questions have come up that I wanted to address.
You do not need to draft a player for every roster slot. For example, if you want to draft 8 outfielders and no catcher you are more than welcome to do so but you would need to either pick up a catcher on waivers or not start someone in that slot. Same goes with pitchers, you do not need to draft a relief pitcher, but if you do not you will forfeit that roster spot untill you pick up one on waivers.
You may draft someone that is not in the yahoo player pool, but you will need to leave a roster spot open for that player until he is added. For example, if you would like to draft Jed Lowrie (red sox), make an announcement to the forum that you are taking him and draft some schmuck in kafenatid as a placeholder. This schmuch must stay on your roster until lowrie becomes available. If at any time you drop the schmuck, you lose the rights to lowrie and he eters the standard waiver pool.
There is no DL slot in this league. You have 4 bench spots and if a player enters the DL and you wish to keep him on your team, he must take up one of your bench slots.
I guess thats all for now, if anyone has any other questions, let me know. We're making great progress everyone... keep it up and we should have this thing finished early next week with plenty of time to spare.

Hmm. Very confused by #157. So if I don't draft or play a C (for example), those stats (obviously) don't count..., so the scores are the averages of the the others in my lineup??? So if there is a really lousy guy -(low R, H, OBP etc), I can just not play him??
Also do we have a DH position?
I sense this is going to be a long learning curve for me.
By the way I am back for the night, but DPer's can pick away at whomever shows up in the list - I am going downstairs to watch the Villanova/Syracuse BBall game which I TIVO'd. Be nice and don't tell me the score yet...

Twarpy has his queue active but unfortunately it's empty.
Yes you can decide to not start a catcher if you want. This won't hurt your average but will hurt your Runs, RBI's, and Steals.
Generally speaking, a single run or RBI is more valuable than a slightly under average obp or slugging. But its your call as a manager.

Brian, Nando, ltran, spetes
I will be up until Twarpy picks or times out -- BUT I think the pause might hit when he has 3 minutes left! --if you want to leave Q's with or with out instructions.
I also get up at 7 and can make moves for people then. Just leave instructions in this thread.
NB I asked Fred about the no change for DST and he said it all runs on EST but it does stop at midnight for the DST. So it does work although the clock shows EST.

DH = Util -- and we get one, per the league settings: http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/140467/settings
As a Util/DH -- You can plug in a player of any position. (IE: OF for example)

Also, some players are only available as Util, for example Jim Thome and Frank Thomas are only available in the utility spot.
Any position player can play there (no pitchers).

This is REALLY SPOOKY. I have this really long Q list and since round 14.01 only one player has been taken off of it by one of you guys...
I am beginning to think I REALLY don't know what I am doing!

The 2nd half of the draft goes on insane runs so it's pretty hard to leave queues. We should finish well ahead of schedule but I'll try to keep a better eye out from now on. Picking in a sec.

So the draft progress was great this week. If we stay on pace we should be into or at least close to round 19 by the end of the day. This puts us on pace to have the draft wrapped up by about Wednesday.
I'm going to keep the draft going during the weekend but I'm going to extend the draft clock to 6 hours. If you are not planning on being available to pick this weekend, please either set up a queue or at least post a message to this forum so I can take that into consideration.
Let me know if there are any questions/concerns.

Twarpy has two picks to make up since he's been skipped twice today. I will consider holding the draft up if we get too far ahead so that he doesn't fall too far behind, but hopefully he'll get in touch with me soon so he can make up these choices.

My Q is actually short now and I don't know anything about any of them - except stats and most are buried in their lineups. If it gets emptied, I am not sure who I'll be picking! There is almost no one left!

Im not particularly thrilled with the commish selecting a player for me by my queue without a request to do so. (Rd. 17) I left instructions with another manager, offline (maybe that was my mistake) and the DP'er was informed of my instructions. I apologize for not using the board to update the group, as it was a last minute trip (and i could not get internet connection in the hotel, as I expected) - But please do not DP for me again, unless requested.

I appologize for that. When I see a queue full and there are no instructions as far as who to select I assume that its fair game. Since I am an automatic designated picker for everyone there is no way to know if someone chose to have me select or not.
I will not pick from your queue again unless you instruct me to.

See post # 182 and 183
Let's give Twarpy a couple of hours (4?) to fill his Q -- he left a note about how hard it was to draft on weekends and I think we should reward his courtesy.
Any thoughts?

No prob, I understand. Just an FYI, as my DP'er was kinda worried that I might be upset. I do not know (nor am I going to check) who I might have taken in that round, or subsequent rounds, but I do know I wanted a shot at Bonds, and Randy Johnson. Both of whom I got anyway. If Pena was still around, theres a good chance I might have taken him after them two. So, no harm no foul. On a side note, who ever heard of a hotel (in Atlantic city no less) that only offers dial up, w/ associated long distance charges, etc... That was the most dissappointing part. :)

jason,
can we help you put our players onto our YAHOO teams or is this something only the commish can do? (In AOL, each manager can do his/her own.)

No,
Only the commissioner can do it. It's fine though, I've done it before and it doesn't take too long. Hoefully we can be all wrapped up by Tuesday and hit the seasson running on Wednesday with a week before opening day. Great job everyone.

As we post our final picks I thought I'd let you know what our next steps are.
After the draft is complete (today hopefully) we will retire this thread and start up another thread that periodically updates the standings to that the other RIBC leagues can keep track of our progress. We can also use the standings page to discuss trades, trash talk, etc...
I plan on having the league entered into Yahoo tonight. When the rosters are finalized in yahoo each undrafted player automatically goes into waivers for two days. Waiver priority is assigned in reverse order of draft selection. If you select someone that is on waivers, you will be moved to the lowest priority. After the two day waiver period, each player goes into the unrestricted free agent pool and can be selected by anyone without affecting their waiver priority.
Trades can take place at any time untill the late august trading deadline. All trades will be reviewed and accepted/veto'ed by myself. I will pass approval onto the RotoGuru in the event that I am involved in a trade or cannot make an appropriate or unbiased decision.
Other than that... good luck and here's to a competitive season!
