pick#1 you can go years without getting a chance to draft number 1, so I never turn down a chance. not that it's a huge advantage or anything, but I can draft in the middle or the tail end any time.
1.01 Alex Rodriguez, 3b, NYY
Not much to say here. If you pick first you take A-Rod. If I was going to take anyone else I would have traded my 1st rd pick down. Last year the A-Rod owners in all the leagues I was in just ran away with things early. Hoping for a repeat of that.

1.02 Jose Reyes, SS, NYM
Wanted a pick near either end since so I don't have to follow things as much, as often. I normally pick late but with the 2nd pick open I went for it.
Then I realized what a mess the 2nd pick was and with I had something else. Reyes, although he was down last year, seemed like the best choice. Thought about Ramirez but with the surgery decided to go with Reyes.

1.03 Hanley Ramirez, SS, NYM
I was lucky enough to be able to prioritize my top pick as a top 3 pick. I knew that either Reyes or Hanley would fall to me here. I actually expected Reyes to be my guy, but I am more than happy to get Hanley. Either way, I got a great head start in the SB category at a scarce position. I could have seen taking a 3B (Wright or Cabrera) here as well but ultimately the 50+ steal threat along with the terrific power Hanley has shown was too much to pass up. After two years of middle of the pack RIBC finishes picking 13th and 10th, I am hoping this is the year I break through. There's a lot more work to do, but Hanley and his all around 5x5 profile is a fantastic start.

1.06 Chase Utley, 2B, PHI
Picked based on position scarcity- Utley is by far the best 2B out there and had a bigger spread advantage over all other 2Bmen than any other player had over his competition at any other position

1.12 Ryan Braun, 3B, MIL
I wasn't quite sure where I wanted to draft this year. I did read the post on the baseball boards about the draft position success that picking 6th has. I just wasn't sure who the 6th best player was. Choosing to pick 12th let me stew over who I wanted, or what was left, and be close to the turn.
Braun is a hitting stud. Baseball Prospectus projects him to be an A-Rod or D. Wright type hitter. If he can avoid a sophomore slump I believe the hype. This is a guy who can rake.

1.13 Prince Fielder, 1B, MIL
I did not have a choice in draft position, but I don't think draft position matters as much in fantasy baseball as much as it does in hoops or football. If I had a choice, I would have picked 8 or 9 so there would be less chance of missing out on a run at a position.
I rated both Fielder and Pujols about the same and much higher than any other player remaining. They are both strong in the same categories (R, RBI, OBP, and SLG). I would have picked Pujols because of his longer track record, but I was concerned that the elbow injury could cause him to miss a significant number of games. If Santana were available I would have considered drafting him. I thinks Santana’s stats will improve playing in a pitchers park and in the NL. I didn’t think any other pitchers were worth consideration this early.

1.15 Grady Sizemore, OF, CLE
I can hope and pray that someone like Rollins or Utley would fall to here but to no avail. As they were snatched up I though I might get Albert. Nope. So when my pick came up I just clicked the top guy in my Q. Sizemore is a five cat guy, though a bit low in the percentages for me. Still, I always have a problem with steals and he will certainly help a bunch there. I expect CLE to score a bunch and for Grady to lead the charge.

2.02 Jake Peavy, SP, SD
After offering this pick for trade, and then seeing Hubble do the same with his, I knew that I would have to make it. There are many good players to choose from here but most were OFers and I already have one of those! Dunn would have been a nice complement, or Crawford or Soriano to solidify steals. All good picks to match with Sizemore expect for their positions. Many of the MI options seemed like a stretch, though I am high on BJ Upton as well. Peavy and Santana really make up a tier all unto themselves and I have had Peavy the last few years with great success. I am happy to welcome back a 230+ K guy to anchor the staff.

2.04 Vladimir Guerrero, OF, LAA
I was hoping to draft Peavy, but he went at 2.02. I didn't think any pitchers other than Peavy and Santana were worth drafting this early. I also considered Beltran and Soriano. I liked Guerrero a little better than the other two because I value a OBP more than steals. Hopefully I can draft someone to get me steals in a later round.

2.05 Carlos Beltran, OF, NYM
I had three players in mind here; Beltran, Soriano, and Ichiro. I ultimately decided to go with Beltran because he produces in all five hitting categories. With Braun and Beltran I have given myself a solid foundation in all the hitting stats without sacrificing any one category.

2.15-Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cin
Mostly position scarcity here. Nice to lock up 2 above average middle infielders. Only really thought about Bedard here, always nice to get a Canadian but with him gone, was a pretty easy pick.

Young, good, bit of speed, lots of upside. Plus my top rated player. Didn't really consider anyone else but Jose Rios. Hoped he'd fall to me in the future but nope.

2.11 Carlos Lee- OF Houst. I almost took VMart here but opted for Carlos Lee as the safer pick in a year when I think outfield depth will be lacking.

2.14 Victor Martinez, C, Cle I knew I could probably get Victor here, and I was happy to do so, even if it might be viewed as "early" by some. Catcher is not an exciting position, but Martinez and Russell Martin are studs. I would have even considered taking Martin if he had made it back to me in round 4 and shifting VMart to 1B.

3.03 Bobby Abreu, OF, NYY
The use of OBP in RIBC elevates Abreu's worth. Batting 3rd for the Yankees, Abreu can easily score 120 runs (as he did last year), drive in 100 and post a .400 OBP. Oh, and he steals 25 bases. The only question is his slugging--not horrrible but certainly not up to par with what someone would want from an OF being taken early in the 3rd round. Considering I drafted the top slugging C and SS, I figured I could take that hit here and receive the rewards Abreu provides in the other categories.
