0 Subject: RIBC AAA PCL Draft Rationales (Round 6-10)

This thread will be for managers in the RotoGuru Invitational Baseball Challenge to provide the rationale for each pick.

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

Please post your ( 2 round lagged) comments at the time you make your pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If possible, please draft your rationale at the time your are making that pick. Not only does that allow you to remember your thoughts "in the moment", but it also makes it simple to copy and paste it when it is due, avoiding unnecessary delays and/or placeholders.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale. Simply post something like "2.10 placeholder for Guru". This makes it easy for me (or any moderator) to splice the eventual rationale in the proper place.

3. If you are providing rationales after a placeholder has been inserted, then post it in the draft discussion thread, and someone will copy it over.

4. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

The general format should be:
1.01 Alex Rodriguez, 3B, NYY
Several sentences of rationale.

for Donkey Hunter:

6.03 Brian McCann, C, ATL

I had McCann as the last of the 2nd tier catchers so I took him. I expect him to improve some on last years numbers because he is still such a young player. Also the Braves offense should be potent this year in the middle of the order with the addition of Tex and probably more importantly subtraction of *undrafted player*

6.04 Billy Wagner, RP, NYM

It just felt like the right time to take a closer. The top closers were coming off the draft board and I didn't think I would have a good quality closer if I waited another 30 picks with my next pick. I'm very happy with who I got. Wagner should be a great source of steals as I expect the Mets to be one of the top teams this year.

6.07 Paul Konerko, 1B, CWS

As much as I wanted to take Chris Young, I couldn't justify 3 pitchers in a row, especially with a need for a power bat. Still no closers jumping out at me, so definitely zoned in on a power bat. Also considered filling up my MI spot early but once Rickie Weeks was picked I pulled the chute on that plan. As good as Renteria did last year, he might get lost in that Tiger lineup much like he did in his last trip to the AL. A corner infield anchor was really the only option here. I played most of last year with a makeshift 1st Base unit and it was something I didn't want to do again. Narrowed down to Konerko, Adrian Gonzalez, Lowell and Zimmerman in order. Konerko wins because 8 out of his last 9 years have been impressive, consistency is key for me. AdGonz was tempting but Petco still scares me, and it didn't feel right for the third basemen yet. If Konerko doesn't get traded and the Sox stay healthy, batting between Swisher and Thome will be a dream come true.

for Philsphan:

6.08 Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, SD

I had targeted several guys in this round that were taken just before my pick. Vernon Wells was a great pick at 6.01. I also had Mauer and McCann penciled in this round too. But I also had Gonzalez. All indications are that he will have his breakout year this year, at least that is what I am choosing to beleive. So I really like his upside. I had another starting pitcher in mind here as well, but I feel pretty safe that he will be around for a bit. Until the 9th round when he got snatched up. Ugh.

6.09 Chris Young, SP, SD

I was going back and forth on this pick between Roy Oswalt and Chris Young here. On the surface Chris Young is better in Wins, Strikeouts and comparable in WHIP and ERA. He did have a rough 2nd half last year, but I'm hoping that with all of spring training he has some time to figure out what caused that. He also tends to get a hurt hammy here and there, but at least those aren't arm injuries.

Hoping for a solid low 3 ERA, 1.10 WIHP, 15 Wins and 175 Ks. Nothing extraordinary, just a good start in all the pitching categories.
