The draft thread is now open. We will use this thread throughout the draft.
Please do not mention players who are eligible to be drafted.
Please only post draft picks in the draft thread and all other comments here. If there is a traded draft pick, a commish will post that in the draft thread as a way to update the posted draft chart.
If you wish to trade a draft pick, it is still necessary to have a commish approve your trade, but it is not necessary to propose/accept on CBS site during the draft--though you are still welcome to do that. All trades need confirmation so we can be sure terms are understood and aggreeable (email to all commishs is fine as well). If a commish is not around and you are sure the trade will go through, you can ask that manager to pick for you and that pick will be traded once approved.
The commishs will be closely monitoring the pace of the draft and if need be will adjust clocks accordingly. The c clock will be posted here approx. every round.

The main DSL line to the island was cut this morning, so I am unable to connect to the internet while at work.
I'll be back home again (and my trusty cable line) in a little over three hours if it gets to me with pick 1.10.

I won't be able to pick up Randy Johnson for several hours; if some kind soul wants to do it for me I'll take my demerit like a man.
I would consider dropping down out of my 3rd round pick if somebody sees somebody they want to jump up and pick. I'll even use a pick in next years draft to balance it if you are looking to jump up without giving the equal value back this season.

Thx hen for taking and posting my q.
Some interesting stuff going on but I can't talk about it right now. The last few years people have asked for recap threads in football and baseball. Depending on how things go we will either do that again or we can just do it in a discussion thread.
I am in and out today it seems. Trying to figure out my next pick and build a q just in case.
Nice work on the speed of the draft. Glad I left the q!

Anyone looking for a catcher of the future, I have one of the best slugging catching prospects in baseball, Jeff Clement, as a prospect that I would like to trade for draft picks. Clement was in the top 25 prospects as rated by Keith Law (ESPN), John Sickels (Rotowire) and is 42nd by Baseball America. Clement holds the national record for home runs by a high school player.
Kenji Johjima is in the final year of his contract, so it seems natural that Clement will get one last year of seasoning in AAA before likely being handed the starting job in 2009. Teams without a keeper-quality catcher might want to consider stashing Clement on your prospect list, and have a Major League-ready player available to plug into your starting lineup next year.

Many people are around and an email pops up and alerts them to pick. I've actually been around working on something else and have gone oer an hour and didn't know I was on the clock before. If you take a q, also please email or post that you can't so someone else can. Speeds up the draft and saves people their c clock in case they need it for later on. THX! I thought about having everyone just send an email (basically keep replying to all) to all and simply announce who was up with what pick like our Hoops league does automatically, but thought we are usually fast anyhow and save some email spam. We've been pretty good thus far.

I'd be interested in getting in on a "Reply to All" draft pick notification (or perhaps we make up an optional distribution for that)... especially with Gmail its no big deal keeping it all in one conversation. Those with other email would find it more annoying perhaps.

I've made a few picks from my iphone and it's kind of a pain in the ass(like an extra 5-10 minutes) to look at the next 3, get their emails, and then email them.
The mass email would definitely simplify it.

lol bmd #36.
I'm not a fan of JD, but we're talking the 200-somethingth pick here, so why not take a .380+ OBP guy hitting in that stacked lineup. I might have to be wary of him sitting vs LHP -- but then again that might be even better for his numbers.

I'd be more worried of him getting injured and sucking rather than the left handed pitching :)
I drafted him in RIBC so he'll probably suck again this year. Sorry.
I am interested in a future value trade for one of my 5th-or-below picks. If you have a pick at the end of a round, I will give you my pick at the beginning of the round. In exchange, you will trade your 3rd round pick next year for my 5th round pick (which is essentially just one round if you continue to be good and my team does as expected).

I was talking to Species via email about it and bmd had the same sentiments as I did. Took JD off my OF power hitting list early on. Besides, I'm hoping he does get hurt so Moss gets a chance to play. Of course who knows what Crisp's role will be? He has the potential to just crsh it, but can't help much on the shelf.
Injuries to my bug guns have really hurt me the last three years. I was able to overcome it 3 years ago, but cost me the last two. Doubt if I could have gotten Twarpy last year anyhow. Still I took Guillen and his impending suspension.

Could work out fine for PD but you never really know about pitching prospects. Carrasco is rated one of the top prospects in the system but I doubt I would give up Matsui and Sherrill for that much uncertainty. I wouldn't overrule it but, IMO, this kinda seals the deal for this year for Twarpy.

The reason I posted this w/o approving it immediately is because I felt it was questionable at best.
Simply because a trade is viewed lopsided by other memebrs of the league though does NOT mean it should be vetoed. Just because you think PD should have gotten more, or you would have given more for said players should have no consideration in deciding whether or not a trade should go through. Furthermore, none of us have a crystal ball to determine how this trade will ultimately play out. In the short-run it's pretty obvious. In the long-run...well who knows. I submit that PD's players could still be as good if not better, but the two prospects are highly rated.
My thought is...why is this trade being made now? These are two keepers for PD so Twarpy gets two more keeps and PD two less. This could have been made before the keeps deadline and PD could have flipped that first for more. Also, I am biased against prospects. I've never had a drafted prospect pan out. There are so many sure-fire prospects that never pan out or when they do, don't turn out to be studs. Maybe these two will be different? Point is, Twary's getting two PROVEN players right now at least in a closer AND a nice producer for a good team. If the two prospects pan out, how long will it take before they do?
Bottom line: I wanted to get some feedback now before we acted. If we approve it or deny it and all hell breaks loose, at least we gave you the opportunity to pipe up since you don't get to vo on the site until we are done with the draft.
Officially: Species and I both feel at first glance that it's pretty lopsided but not enough to veto. Have not heard back from the other commishs. My guess is that it will be approved shortly.

Killer deal for Twarpy until Sherril doesn't pan out this year... he may or may not, who knows. Or when you consider Hideki is gonna get a few games off a week and is pretty old himself (Yanks are rotating Damon, Hideki and Giambi between DH and LF) I can't see him having much trade value... who is gonna give up significant value for him in a keeper league when his career is wrapping up? Seems to me like he got a few good chips to build on and a couple young arms and he got rid of Hideki while he had a couple years of trade value. And I don't think Twarpy cares - he's only adding him as a one season rental cause he wouldn't crack his keepers anyway.
Its all about perspective I guess. Good deal for both I'd say.

Ref - I will be happy to offer my direct opinions when needed. Please let me speak for myself.
What I said was:
- that I didn't like it - meaning, from a competitive standpoint it improves Twarpy greatly
- that I thought PD could have gotten more - meaning yes, it is a trade in Twarpy's favor, perhaps even greatly so, in my opinion
- but that in no way would the "c" word (collusion) even come into the conversation, and absent that, it's in no way veto-able

GO, I'm talking about PD's side. That's my whole point. Also would like to see PD's take on it.
Thank you for your opinions darky and GO. Good to hear from differing viewpoints.
Lastly, obviously not collusion. The whole point of trading is to make your team better, so just because a top team trades with a prospective bottom team and it's deemed lopsided still doesn't mean it's vetoable. We shouldn't be in the business of "protecting someone from themself." I always think it comes down to this: Does it hurt the integrity of the league to such a degree that it needs to be vetoed?
Tosh agrees with Species and myself. I am approving the deal.

It is a risk, no doubt about it. Sherrill is the closer for Baltimore (meaning I'm giving away 16-17 saves this year). But guys, you can't look at this trade on its own without looking at my team. Right now (only 6 rounds into the draft) I have as outfielders:
Matsui Francoeur Hopper Hunter Milledge
Hideki Matsui is a top OF if he remains healthy. But I couldn't start all these guys if I wanted to.
Also, getting two first round picks in 2009 is a real bonus. It'll help that I should have a very good young pitching staff, with 4-5 guys who can be #1-2 starters.
Does Twarpy improve? You bet. He's giving up two excellent prospects plus two #1 picks for two guys that can help him now. The value of this trade won't become clear for a year or so, by that time the value of these two top pitching prospects and my #1 selections in those drafts will be known.

It's one first round pick and a prospect pick as I have it on CBS.
Guess I have no idea why Hopper was even kept. I still think there are better OFs available right now. But that's just me. We all value players differently.
Thanks for the comments PD, that will help people at least understand where you were at when accepting it.

My first reaction was negative, but it depends on how you value the players. I don't know much about Carrasco or Niemann except what I read so I could be totally missing the boat and I'll be interested to see how they turn out.
I believe that Carrasco is decent prospect, rated #54 by BA and projected to one day be a #3 starter. Niemann is likely going back to the minors this year but he was at one time highy rated, but seems pretty far down the depth chart now. TB has lots of pitching prospects right now ahead of Niemann, but that doesn't mean Niemann won't turn out fine.
Looking at prospects PD has 2 and will likely call up Milledge so that will leave Joel Guzman as his only prospect. Guzman likely gets dumped at prospect deadline still leaving him a prospect pick in the next draft while keeping Carrasco and Niemann.
One thing I'm unsure of is the prospect pick. Why a 2009 pick, or does that mean this coming year's prospect pick? We probably need a clarification on that since a prospect this year would be '08/'09 prospect. At first I thought PD would get Twarpy's prospect pick this year so he could wind up with 4 prospects, but now I'm thinking he'll just have 3.
The reason I don't think it is a great trade for PD is that IMO neither of these guys is going to be called up right away and even when they are it likely takes a while to develop. Why not just take a chance on new pitching prospects in the prospect draft where you could probably take guys with just as much upside as Carrasco and Niemann and still have Matsui and Sherrill to trade later?
Then again, PD has Hunter, Francoeur, and Milledge in the OF and Giambi at DH, so Matsui is expendable. I can see him wanting to move Matsui for pitching, but while I agree that Matsui is on the decline, he is still a top 20 OF most likely. He may not have any trade value to a rebuilding team, but to a contending team getting a guy hitting 5th in the Yankees powerhouse lineup ain't too shabby. Sherrill has all but won the closer role making him instantly valuable in our format where closers seem to be gold.
Overall I think it fits the needs for both teams. I like Twarpy's end of it better since I don't think either pitcher is a can't miss type and so many of these pitching prospects don't pan out. Twarpy gets a hitter with an airline named after him hitting in a stacked lineup and a closer that could turn into a stud closer just as easily as Carrasco or Niemann could turn into stud pitchers. A lot of closers come out of nowhere, so who knows. PD does get another 1st round pick next year and can have 4 prospects in 2009 so that will help his rebuilding.
That's my take on it.

Make no mistake. Perm Dude loses this trade. It's a bad decision for him but it's a bad decision on the level of keeping Norris Hopper. We didn't veto that, did we? Perm Dude has made a series of bad decisions that have led to him having six outfielder to begin with. But bad decisions are allowed - that's why he has such high draft picks.
This trade is absolutely fair. Twarpy is trading some of his future for the present. Perm Dude is trade some of his present for the future. Given where each team is, it's perfectly reasonable.

Cards, the reason I took his 2009 pick is this gives me the flexibility of keeping both prospects Twarpy is giving me, plus Guzman. If I keep three prospects, having Twarpy's 2008 prospect won't help me at all because I couldn't use it.
By the 2009 prospect draft one or all those guys will probably be called up/dropped. But I don't believe that will be clear for 2008 so it will allow me to keep the prospects if needed.

The 2nd chart is the actual round and pick of the draft. The first cahrt is each managers individual pick regardless of what round it is selected. As you can see, pick 6.10 was charged 0:00 time. Pick 7.10 (your 6th pick) was charged the 1:46 properly.
mbj, done.
This draft is well behind last year's pace. As you can see, we're averaging just over one round per day. Last year we averaged almost 2 rounds per day.

According to the Los Angeles Times, John Lackey will be sidelined until at least mid-May after being diagnosed with a strained right triceps.
Lackey has never missed a start during his six-year career, but won't be cleared to begin throwing again until at least mid-April and figures to miss at least 7-8 outings. "I'm going to do everything I can to get back as soon as I can, but I've got to be a little cautious, and they're probably going to be pulling me back, going a little slower than I want to go," Lackey said. Mar. 17 - 8:59 am et
And of course, I have Kazmir starting April on the DL.

Yeah Cards sent me a link yesterday. Said Adenhart could even make the team now that Lackey is out for awhile. Hope he only makes it as a 5th starter. I wasn't expecting him to even be called up until after the asb and then in short relief until next year when he would get looked at as a starter.

Don't be so quick to annoint Twarpy as the team of the Century. While his rotation is all-world, there are still some potholes he has to navigate:
- Will Harden be another wasted keeper? - Can Borowski keep his job? - Sherrill hasn't proven jack diddly. He's 30, about to turn 31, and while he's death on lefties, historically righties have given him a hard time over his career (1.71 WHIP, .261 baa). To his credit he was awesome against everybody in 2007. - While I like Brian Wilson, and he has closer stuff (and the mentality), the Giants suck balls and Wilson has historically been wild.
He has sacrificed his offense to build this powerhouse rotation. Even after getting Matsui, he still has a ways to go. Before incorporating a SS, using Sportsline's own projections, he's coming up woefully short in several categories:
OBP .371 - this is strong, obviously, but assumes Pujols' .431 (?!?!??) projected OBP holds up. Plus he has to plug in some .330-ish SS into his lineup
Runs - if you give him a 60-run scoring SS, he'd project to 750 runs, well behind my 795. And I doubt I'm as high as mbj or Pete or Ref.
HR - if you give him a 12-HR SS, he'd project to 161 HR, which he'd be lucky to score double digits (i.e. I project 231)
RBI - if you give him a 45-RBI SS, he'd project to 631 compared to my likely league leading 871.
SB - He's actually pretty decent here at 105 to my paltry 89.
His lineup is also ripe with concerns: - Pujols' elbow, obviously. I doubt there is a manager in this league who doesn't expect Albert to play 135 games. IF he's lucky. - Napoli has competition - Castillo is old - Kubel has never stayed healthy nor reached his potential - Matsui, while a rock-solid hitter in a great lineup, is so dinged up they have to put Giambi at 1b just to let Matsui DH - Brian Giles needs a walker - Gary Matthews' big contract might sit the bench
Obviously he'll dominate in pitching but he has a ton of questions in his lineup. He's already traded away his 1st, 4th and 5th next year, plus a 1st in 2009. I suppose if I was willing to go that far I could be more stacked too.
I think there are 6 teams that could compete....although sure, Twarpy needs to have some bad luck, but there's a reason every pundit in the fantasy baseball world says not to draft pitching so high - it comes with so much risk.

Lord, with that pep talk I think my offense can beat Twarpy's now. You can do it! :)
I have holes I have to plug before I could even be in the same conversation with the twirpster--perhaps even fecies, mbj, etc. I haven't really looked at too many other teams--just some of the keepers and who I thought some teams ahead of me would take.
I can't go into detail what my strategy has been during this draft yet, but anyone who looks could see that it's no mystery. Not taking the best players available--that's for sure.
The way I see it, the more you trade, the better chances are improving your team--or for me at times--destroying it LOL!!!
OK, Time is running out for my 11th and 12th round picks. YOu can trade up this year or maybe we can talk about picks for next year. Won't cost you much. I plan on reaching big time with one or both of my last picks so I could get creative.
Also may need someone to accept this c clock and run it for us. Don't think the other commishs have the time. Let me know if you can do it. Will have to go over a couple things. As long as you know basic .xls and can post it in our threads, we're all good. There are a few managers who are really going to need to see where they are as we hit the last 5 rounds. A couple are already at about 3 hours left.

Yeah, not sure why people are pissed at this trade. Personally, I see it as Twarpy getting perpetually stuck in trading next year picks to fill holes this year, earlier and earlier each year. Certainly thats a result of competing each year and being a contender, but so what?
He's already out a 1st, 4th, 5th and two prospects, so his trading options before the season even begins are rather low already, and he's got 3 closer options who could all flame out. The top will certainly be more competitive this year then it was last year...

The green in the draft grid are picks that will be skipped. These picks are the property of their owners (so they can be traded) until that pick is up, at which time they are immediately skipped. (Commish can correct me on that if I'm wrong, but I think thats what Ref said.)

Not sure why, but Ref put a bunch of your picks in twice in the top half of the c-clock chart. I re-did your part and I can confirm you have 3 picks and need 3.
Given that this is the 3rd owner to spot an error, I guess we'll have to disregard the charts, at least until everyone checks their teams and confirms my numbers for them...

FYI - Ref still owns picks 11.18 and 12.18. However, he has maxed out on players so he cannot make those picks. He can, of course, still trade them away. If he has not announced a trade by the time 11.18 comes up, it is immediately forfeited and the draft moves on. He can trade 12.18 at any time up to the time that pick comes on the clock.

I'd like to call up Phil Hughes for the 1st time.
This means I do not need my 14th round pick and only have 1 pick left.

R9 - your chart looks accurate to me. I picked my 10th pick this AM (via queue), and have 3 picks left. I will be one pick "short".
darkside - I will take care of Hughes for you.
Re: Ref/mbj pick trade (not that it needs further explanation). If I was at my computer when Code picked and had yet to receive Ref's confirmation, I would have picked and moved on. But since I was not at a computer ready to pick, I went ahead and accepted Ref's instructions even though they were +/- 15 mins after the deadline.
Let's try to pick up the pace and bang out these last few rounds.

My plan is to make one more pick and to call up my prospect, Joey Votto - I think that will comeplete my roster. I will forgo my last round pick..

I'm planning to send a queue to GO (who pix before me) and allhair (who pix behind me). Do they both still have pix this round? Is anybody holding queues for them?

I wish to call up Kosuke Fukudome for the 1st time.

Callups of Fukudome, Hughes and Votto have been noted within the rules. I have removed their salaries from the website, but didn't release and pick them back up. I *think* just the removal of the salaries before waivers are processed is good enough - if a Commish knows different, let me know.

Everyone please double check your rosters for accuracy. I try to every round to check, especially for queued picks, but I will sometimes miss. I missed a Slackjawed Melvin Mora pick from Round 7, for example.

Teams who's status in the draft grid I'm able to confirm: Goatlocker, darkside, Guru, R9, mbj, Peter N, Ref, Species, Twarpy. The rest of the teams may have extra picks as well, so please post when you are done your draft.
Species #336: I show you as having 3 picks and needing only 3 picks. With 10 picks + Justin Upton aquired via trade, you only need 3 more. Correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Justin Upton still belongs to me and I've already brought him up for the second time.
And, no, I will not need my 14th round pick and it is still available.

Yeah, I wish I had Upton!
Either way, yes I have 3 picks left, so it's all good. Merci' R9 for picking up the C clock and these 'who needs picks' thing, as it's very handy.

I am back. Thanks to everyone who has picke dup the slacks and the contacts from bh, species and cards. I responded as soon as I was able to read the texts.
As far as the chart goes, before I posted the last chart, I went through the picks and everything appeared to be correct adn both charts balanced. I am not sure what is wrong. I do know that GL called up two prospects and Pete called up one before the draft.
Looks like I still have a pick left. If someone wants it, let me know. Otherwise it will be skipped.
If there is anything I can do to help speed this up let me know. Not quite sure why this draft has been so slow this year compared to our normal lightning quick drafts but at least we started it earlier than initially planned.

Not sure GO will pick before morning since it is Midnight back his way. I'm going to bed as I am just beat.
Somebody going to be around that I can send Twarpy and my pick to in case GO picks.
Otherwise, I'll pick when I get up.

My mouth dropped when you grabbed Ray, GL. Nice. I can't believe I forgot about him. I would have grabbed him earlier if I'd had him on my radar. Why he wasn't is beyond me.
I'm also done drafting. Thanks all!

We've never had prospects called up before/during the draft before. This year we have had several. Not sure what to make of that just yet. It will certainly speed up the draft thoug as there are several skipped picks in the 14th round.

Ref - I don't see an issue. If people are willing to forgo picks for their prospects, more power to 'em. I'm short 1 pick, but have Kennedy I will use, so it works out.

I don't know if it's because we're drafting prospects better or teams are calling up prospects earlier, etc.

The next two on the clock both have less than 3 hrs left on their c clock.
Toral has 2:17 and is OTC now. So he times out at 12:31 ET.
AA is next and has 1:31 left on his clock.

Re: 378 yeah I get why you and others are doing it not. Just commenting that it has never happened before. We've been doing the Prospect Draft for several years and this hasn't happened before and now we've had so many call-ups already and I anticipate more. In fact, I even have a player or two who may be called up--depending on their role. I'm just wondering what the MLB teams are doing different or what we've done differently as managers to have all these prospects potentially ready to help our teams right now to all be called up and still in Spring Training.

Ref, its probably partly that we had a better bunch of prospects, plus the ability to call up/send down again makes calling up not as big a decision.

Good point, R9. This is only the 2nd draft in which we were able to call-up and still retain prospect-eligibility.

Lets finish this draft today! everybody send a long list of players to all those with completed drafts and finish this damn thing off.
Side note, I'm confused by that chart. Cause I though I actually was gonna be SHORT a pick.. and then I trade Wilson leaving me with an extra empty spot on my roster... so even if I had an extra pick going into the draft (which I was unaware of) than at the least that should even out and I would still have 3 picks left, no?
I don't plan to call anyone up yet either prospect wise, so its not that I don't think.

People are really going to have to pay attn to the chart to see who is up. As I posted in the draft thread, 13.13 is apparently forfeited and Yokel has been on the clock.

To make that less confusing and so you don't have to watch everyone else's drafts... do you think it would be a good idea to do what we do in Lucky 13? say I don't want my last round pick cause I plan to call up Longoria... then in my 14.06 pick - I actually "draft" Longoria like this -- 14.06 Evan Longoria, 3B, TB - Prospect call up
Or even if you have an extra pick, you should stil be required to "pick" there even if its just to type in that its extra and you are picking nobody. Even if that just means emailing a "que" of a forfeited pick to the guy going after you so he is aware you aren't picking.

GO, thats probably a great idea to implement next year. The biggest problem with making that draft grid, was that I used people's CBS team to figure out how many picks left people had. If someone didnt pick up their latest draft pick, I'd miss that.

OK, Times are over.
We need the timed-out picks of R9 and Toral. Typically we give them 3 timed hours from the end of the draft to make them up.
Since the draft is over, trades are now under the voting process and submitted via CBS.

OK things seem right. Now that Easter weekend is over and people should be able to be around we can start waivers at any time.
Does anyone have a preference on which day we start them?
Choices are: A: Today so they run Wed morning B: Tomorrow so they run Thurs morning C: Wed so they run Fri morning
There are games early morning Tues and Wed. Originally we had planned to turn them on Tues so they ran thurs morn (B). That was to protect the draft (not getting guys for free so early and finding out news to get free pickups with the to early games) around those tues/wed games and to not start them over Easter weekend when some might not be around to make claims.
I am planning to start them tomorrow (B) unless there is enough support to start them today or Wed. The benefit to starting them on Wed could be a full day to evaluate what happened in both early games.

I may not remember correctly, but I thought in the past the idea was to get the draft over with and run waivers as early as possible so that people can start adjusting their team prior to the season. Trying to 'protect the draft' doesn't really fit with that scenario, plus the draft is over and the regular season is starting, so why not start waivers right away? The problem with delaying, is that it makes no sense to bother scouting players now to pick up since you can't even pick them up anyway. These first two games count as the regular season, yet we can't pick up players now to start in that game if we were so inclined. I'm not being critical, just pointing out things I'm thinking about now that the draft is over that I hadn't thought about earlier. Personally I was all set to pick up a player before I realized we decided not to start waivers yet and I couldn't. Not a player I care to use a waiver claim on, so the sooner waivers run and the free agents are available to add, the better. Ideally (in my mind anyway) in the future we would want free agents to be available prior to the first regular season game, so the sooner we run them the better. The draft runs close enough to the start of the regular season that we shouldn't worry about late news. There is no protection during the draft, so why try to implement something afterwards. That's my take on it.

RE: 423, if we could have gotten the draft done earlier and not have to start waivers over Easter weekend, we may have considered that. If we hadn't moved up the draft we still prob wouldn't be done.
But with a couple people asking to start today, I'll send an email. I'm like GO, I like to get things started, so whereas I'd personally prefer to get them going asap. gotta weigh that with the best option for the league. Since we had mentioned before that you wouldn't get free pickups for the first two games so draft accordingly, I'm still leaning B--though I can see C as well. That way if any player jumps out everyone gets equal chance to got them on waivers.
