PCL Managers: This thread is for overall comments on the draft. You may use the questions below as a guide, or simply say what you want to say.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

1. I took the first pick in the draft mostly because I had never had it before and wanted to see what it was like. I found it difficult to plan between picks because so many picks went in between, especially in the early-mid rounds. Later on it was not as much of an issue because managers had different agendas. I wanted 4-cat players early with some steals thrown in. Jump on closers when they were good deals. grab all three MI in the first half of the draft. I basically did all of those things. I reached a little bit in the early rounds for fear of players I want not getting back to me, but overall I think I did what I set out to do.

2. I like getting Shields and Izzy at 8th and 9th. Putz at 4.16 was also a great deal. I got some value players that I am high on this preseason - Blanton, Jimenez, and Scott. I think I might have picked Kaz Matsui a turn to high but I felt I needed the steals and wasnt sure if he was going to make it around. I waited and waited for 1B and I hope that doesnt come back to bite me.

3. I never know what to say in this category. I figure people drafted pretty even. I have learned to take alot of RP at the end because of the restrictive IP limit. I didnt see every team doing this. Some are also going to be hurting for saves and steals but there are honestly not enough to go around.

4. MI flying off the board early surprises me every year for some reason. Good pitching sticking around at the same time is also surprising. But its the same thing every year I guess. The closer run happened a round later than I expected. I did not expect to start it at 4.16. In the mock I took Putz at 3.14. Last year I took Nathan at 3.08.

5. Hmm maybe hold off on Thome at 5.01 and take a 1B. But then I probably wouldnt have gotten Thome and LaRoche would be my UT, so its probably a wash. I dunno its an easier question to answer in June I think. ;)

So yeah I had a pretty good draft. I should be good with R RBI SLG, middle in OBP SB. Pitching should be middle to higher all the way. This year I got less starters and more relievers so we will see how that strategy works out. The best Ive ever done in RIBC leagues is T-7th, worse being 16th, so anything 6th or better would be considered a good year for me.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I was stuck with the 15th pick. I was not to happy with this pick, but it was not bad. My overall strategy was to grab all offensive players for at least the first 6 rounds and make sure I address the 2B, MI, C positions. I also wanted SB. I stuck with that plan by not drafting a pitcher until the 7th round. I picked up Brian Roberts for 2B and Rickie Weeks for my MI. Joe Mauer as my catcher is top notch. That is alot of speed there and they should carry me in that category. After I was done grabbing all the fire power early I wanted to grab closers to try to compete in saves. I drafted Rafael Sorianno in the 7th which should net me a good 30 saves. Brian Wilson also in the 12th was another source of saves. Overall I think I will struggle in saves, but should still be competitive enough not to be at the bottom.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Favorite Picks

1.15 Ryan Braun -
8.02 Rich Hill -
14.02 Josh Fields

Bad Picks

10.02 Ben Sheets - hope he stays healthy.
11.15 Job Chamberlain - If he doesn't get out of the pen this will be a huge reach.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Philsphan- Should be top in RBI's and near the top in every Pitching Cat.

Toral: Will dominate Pitching. Little weak at hitters, but it could work out.

Rogue9: ERA, WHIP will be top notch, SLG%,OBP,SB should be near the leader.

My projected standings (Of course I predict me 1st!)

1 JTSERB
2 PHILSPHAN
3 TORAL
4 JRDOOLIT
5 ROGUE9
6 KSOZE
7 ROCKET RICHARD
8 DONKEY HUNTER
9 ROB THAYER
10 DA BOMB
11 ATHLETICS GUY
12 GOATLOCKER
13 KHAHAN
14 JEFFAGGY
15 IHATEPHILLY
16 GURUDAN

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Alot of reaches IMHO. Here are some just to name a few.

2.11 Victor Martinez
3.05 Derek Jeter
5.14 Torri Hunter
6.06 JJ Hardy
6.16 Kelly Johnson
8.06 Juan Pierre
8.07 Geovany Soto

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I would have went after more saves. I think i might be on the short end of the stick on that one. Probally some more quality starters also, but I stuck with my draft plan pretty much so im happy.

Good luck to all! Should be a good year. Looking to get back to the Majors :)

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I had the 4th overall pick and aimed at picking Utley (if one of my top 3 of Arod, Hanley, and Wright fell, which they didn’t). Utley will contribute mightily in 4 categories while throwing in a few steals and also fills one of the weak MI positions. For the next few rounds, I looked to get big OPS type hitters while also selecting SPs if I felt they presented good value. I believe I executed this well by picking up Dunn, Mags, Swisher, and Sheffield. I think Beckett and Oswalt represent excellent value at picks 4.13 and 7.04. It’s hard to differentiate between the next best 5 SPs after Santana and Peavy, and for whatever reason, Beckett fell about a round later or more than his counterparts. I like Oswalt as my SP2 in the 7th round. I’m not high on him this year, but felt I couldn’t pass on him that late. He’s had a good spring thus far, so that is encouraging.

From there, I needed to work on my speed and saves, thus prompting my selections of Orlando Cabrera, Lugo, Lidge, Gagne, and CJ Wilson (who I later handcuffed with Kazuo Fukumori) in 6 out of my next 7 picks. From there, I filled out my team by picking some high upside/bounceback guys in RJ, Milledge, Kouzmanoff, Giambi, Ian Kennedy, and Garza.

Hopefully: Pie is able to hold onto his starting job, Bengie Molina produces above average C numbers while hitting cleanup, Vidro hits like he did in the second half of last season, Mussina produces somewhere in the middle of his 2006 and 2007 numbers, and Hampton pitches respectably. Of course, I’m not expecting all of this happen, but I think it’s reasonable for a lot of it to. Colby Rasmus will be dropped once rosters are entered upon hearing news that he’ll start the year in the minors (which is too bad, he could’ve been pretty productive if he won the leadoff job).

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Favorites are probably Milledge and Giambi. Both are having great springs and should do very well for me.
Would do over Rasmus. But selecting him in the 21st round is not a tragedy.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

After a quick scan, I will say Philsphan’s squad.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Last year, the two things that ruined me from the start were missing out on both the MI runs and the closer runs. Also, picking Albert Pujols first instead of A-Rod had a little to do with it too. This year I determined that I did not want to take a draft position on either end, but wanted to shoot for the middle. Lucky me I got the 9th spot. I figured that way I would minimize the distance between my picks and hopefully not miss out on any runs. I think I accomplished that goal. Guillen and Young in rounds 3 & 5 took care of two of the MI slots, although it was a struggle after that as many of the rest of the MI’s were taken quite early in my opinion.

I took Papelbon as the first closer in the draft. Following him up with Chad Cordero will keep me competitive with saves.

My other strategy was ERA, WHIP and K’s on the pitching side. I have traditionally been weak in all those areas, so I placed early emphasis on those categories. Again, except for Wang and Lowe (whom I picked for Wins) I think I did that.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I must say getting Santana as my first pick was a surprise and a gift. I’m not sure there was another RIBC draft that picked him lower. Johan in the NL and Manny Ramirez in a contract year are a nice one-two punch to start off this team.

I think Burrell in Round 8 was a great value pick. His OBP is too high for him to be selected that low, so I am very happy with that pick. His being from Philadelphia has nothing to do with it either ;-).

Dmitri Young in the 24th Round. A 2007 All-Star. I was sure he would go long before that. We’ll see how that turns out.

Michael Young may turn out to be a bust. It’s a shame to take an MI and not get any SB’s out of it, but there was really no one else around that was worth taking at that point.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I think I Hate Philly has the strongest offense on paper. Toral appears to have a strong pitching staff. Ksoze has good balance.

My top teams, according to my projections are: I Hate Philly, Ksoze, R9, Nerfherders.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Several times in the middle rounds I would just watch my queue evaporate one-by-one before my eyes, and I had to scramble to find a suitable pick. I suppose I should be used to that by now, but this year it seemed to happen more often.

I was surprised the closer run was as late as it was. I thought for sure my Papelbon pick would start it all off, but it almost took until the next round before Putz was taken.
I am constantly surprised by the reaches for SB’s. Too often in the middle rounds managers go for that one category at the expense of 2 (OBP and SLG) in getting a base stealer. But if you have solid bombers early who solidify the percentages then I guess it’s okay. I just have never subscribed to that strategy. Unless I do poorly again this year, then I may have to!

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I missed out on SB’s. That was a conscious decision, however, as I was determined not to reach for too far for that. Jacoby Ellsbury is my only base stealer, and I really didn’t reach for him. You can’t be solid in every category, and since my emphasis this year was on pitching, I’m not sure I would change anything.

This was a very fun draft. My best wishes to everyone this year. This looks like a good competitive group and I am looking forward to the season.

Draft position choice rationale

I felt I had one of the worst slots to choose from. By the time it got to me the top few choices were gone and I figured people would have taken the bottom 2 or 3 selections. I lucked out and was able to take the last slot giving me the corner pick. This let me nail down 2 picks at once.

A2. Basic draft strategy? How well you executed it?

I always find this one difficult to explain on any meaningful level. My strategy was simple: Look at categories and draft accordingly. I tend not to look too closely at 'a strong Middle infield' or 'great corps of OF' because to me it doesn't mean much. If I'm compiling 150 SB I don't care if they come from my C or my OF or a combination of both (excepting of course for closers).

With that in mind, I think I executed my strategy fairly well. My OBP will suck. But my Slg and rbi's should be top 3. My SB and runs should be competitive and my pitchig stats should be competitive.

Favorite Picks
Grady Sizemore=man love. Plain and simple. Always glad to have him on board. I'm also pretty excited about my round 16/17 pick ups of Chad Tracy & Andy LaRoche. They are low risk high reward players. I think they both went under a lot people's radars because in a standard 10 or 12 team league the don't even get drafted. But in this deeper league they can be starters and contributors.

Do over picks
In a move that is very unlike my usual strategy, I took back to back closers in the 7th and 8th rounds. Very abnormal for me. Typically through 8 rounds I'll have 5 hitters 2 SP and 1 Closer (or sometimes 6 hitters and 2 SP). But I figured a closer run was due up and I'd rather start it than end it. Unfortunately I over-reached. I counted 7 acceptable closers I could have picked up with later picks and would have preferred 1 Closer and another hitter at that spot(probably Pat Burrell or Jermaine Dye).

Biggest surprise of the draft
I agree with JTserb that there seemed to be a lot of people really reaching. Some of the MI reaches ended up hurting me making it difficult to get the expected production and categories from those slots.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

By getting to pick 3rd, I knew I'd be able to draft a strong 5-cat hitter. I figured it would be Wright as I expected Hanley to go 2nd. Getting Hanley and his 50 SB's really let me do something in RIBC that I always wanted to do; compete in SB's without having a bottom OBP/SLG. Throughout the draft my goal was to take hitters who were strong in the normal 4 cats, while also adding in ~10 SB's. Often, the difference between 2 and 9 sb's on a cheatsheet can go unnoticed. I let that difference be my decision maker more often then not.

Consequently, my only low SLG/high SB guy is Furcal. I reached for Napoli in round 10, but he was the only catcher who can post 60/60/8/.360/.460. SB's from the C spot are big. Guys like Derek Lee, Bay, Adam Jones, Travis Buck, Votto can all add 10 SB's. Thats 50 SB's right there, where in the past I might only have 5-10 from those spots.

My 2nd vague idea of a plan was to not have too many risks. I don't think I did so well in that regard. Nick Johnson, Joey Votto, Adam Jones, Pedro, Harden, BJ Ryan... yikes. ;) Lots of injury bounce-back and rookie doods in that bunch. I think I balanced alot of those risks with decent backups (OF depth for the youngin's, CI/DH depth for Johnson/Votto, etc.) but I'll still be hurting if more then half of those risks don't pan out.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

BJ Ryan: I loved BJ Ryan in the 9th, until rotowire posted that he felt 'sore' a few days ago. Now I'm lukewarm on the pick. But if he pans out, he could be a round 4 type pick 5 rounds later.

Raul Ibanez: Round 11 for 90/100/.360/.490? Ok. :) Probably one of the most underrated guys in MLB. He's starting to age a tad, but in round 11 I'm getting solid production where others are taking big risks, or taking 1-dimensional SB guys w/ horrible ratios.

Greg Maddux: Maddux in round 18 seemed too good to be true. Decent ERA, helpful WHIP, average K's... and his standard 13-15 wins. Wins are always easy to overlook, so the ability to add a baker's dozen without hurting anything else this late is helpful. I liked El-Duque in the 24th for the same reasons. If he's healthy, he'll help in the same way. I can accept the garanteed injury at some point that late.

I also like my Neshek/Betancourt pickups. With only two closers (the same as many teams) the search for extra saves was underway. Borowski is a danger to lose his job (with Betancourt one of the possible guys to step in) and with Nathan a likely trade candidate Neshek could step in. Those reasons aside, both will help my ERA/WHIP/K's alot. The ability to get potential saves while helping 3 cats is a solid value in rounds 14-15.

Not sure I'd want to redo any picks, but I always seem to have a weaker OF in RIBC. After Bay and Ibanez I have a whole lot of hope for my last two spots. (Adam Jones, Buck, Matthews Jr, Headley) Its probably one of the easier positionss to fill off the wire, but maybe an OF'er instead of Napoli in the 10th would've been the way to go.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Hard to say, as I didn't do a projection sheet this year. Some teams look great on paper, but it all depends on how contested some categories are. Teams with 80 SB's may only get 5 rotopoints, where teams with 100 can get 15. That 20 SB difference can decide the league obviously. (SB is just an example, and any category can be like that) With that in mind I tried to be competitive in all categories. The teams who did the same are thus my favorites. Whoever they are :)

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Philsphan stealing all my picks. ;) Burrell, F. Sanchez, Ankiel, Dimitri Young, Marcum, Fuentes, Moylan... I've never seen one manager so thoroughly destroy my queue before.

Other then that, my only real surprise was the managers who forgoed SB's and Saves. I've yet to see an RIBC league winner be weak in any real category, so to punt a category to me is make a tough job even harder. Its also hard to fix mid-season when you're in 4th place but have a 2 in SB's...

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Maybe an OF'er over Napoli, who in hindsight was going to slip. Would also have loved to grab a 3rd closer, as I hate investing an early pick in an RP (Saito in 5th) only to be mid-tier in saves. Oh, and I would've loved to have found a way to get a 2B who didn't completely suck. ;) Kept waiting, and I ended up with the amazing combo of Grudz/German. The temptation to punt 2B is already there... ;)

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

With picking my 1st round draft selection I wanted the 8th pick going in. I reasoned the first 8 picks in no particular order were Arod, HanRam, Wright, Reyes, Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard. In my opinion the biggest drop off was after that. In retrospect I wouldn't have minded being a little lower than that as I had forgotten about Matt Holiday and the beginning of the second round had a lot of good talent.

My overall strategy for the draft is always the same. I target guys with high OBP and Slugging. I made every single offensive pick in this draft with those categories in mind.

On the pitching side I went with a bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier starters who get a lot of strikeouts. You'll also notice I stuck with NL pitchers since they face easier lineups and are less likely to implode.

It sounds like some of the projections don't rate my team very highly, but I'm not surprised. Projections focus a lot on past performance and I'm sure having a guy like Oliver Perez on my team destroys my pitching in a lot of the projections, even though if he repeats his last season he would be a major assett.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
1.08 Matt Holiday - Very happy to get him in the middle of the 1st round. I hope he is able to give me only 90% of his last year numbers.

6.09 - 9.08 My pitching staff After my first 5 picks I felt very secure with my offense and needed to focus on pitching. I was very happy to get Chris Young in the 6th round, and over the next 3 picks with Jenks, Myers and Cain I thought I was able to get a pretty nice pitching staff.

My Bench I was excited to be able to get huys like Melky Cabrera, Mike Jacobs, Barry Bonds and Moises Alou to fill out my bench. The first two are solid starters who can fill in should any of my players get hurt. The second two would be starters aside from the fact that Alou is always hurt and Barry Bonds is not currently with a team. Whatever playing time they get on my team is a bonus, but they were both towards the top of the league in OPS with Barry having a 1.045 OPS and Alou a .916. I hope to plug these guys both in whenever they play.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Philsphan seems to have a very balanced squad, as does Toral. I would guess that they will be up in the top 5 come seasons end.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
How late the 2nd tier pitchers lasted. I know everyone usually focuses on offense first but there were a lot of really good pitchers going in rounds 6 - 12.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

As soon as I picked Carlos Pena I was regretting it. At the time I had no idea who else to draft, but had I known that Chone Figgins was 2b eligible on yahoo I probably would have taken him here.

As much as I like Matt Cain I may have waited on him as pitching wasn't a big need at that point and I was still able to pick up gorzellany in round 15.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Given that I was towards the end of the draft (12) I had to wait and see who fell to me and go from there.
My emphasis is always to draft the best available and then fill in the holes later.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
Faves:
3.12 Ichiro - Had to be the steal of the draft.

Do over:
17.12 Baldelli - News of his "illness" came out the next day.

Very happy with my 1st 7 picks:
1.12 Ryan Howard
2.05 Jake Peavy
3.12 Ichiro Suzuki
4.05 Russell Martin
5.12 Felix Hernandez
6.05 Chris Young
7.12 Tim Lincecum
From there the water got a little murky.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I think there are about 12 teams who are fairly even.
Dont want to name them and dis the other 4.
This will probably come down to who finds the players on waivers to put thier team over the top

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Nothing really everyone seemed to be picking the best players available.
It seemed like I was alwasy deciding on 3-4 players and those players were gone over the next few picks.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?
Bribe the person doing the random numbers to not make them random.
I like my team.
I should be competetive.
There are some really good managers in this league so anything in the top half should be good for me.
