I'm in . . . and happy to keep the philliephan legacy going (although there is no way Paul would have ever finished 9th). I'll have a keeper list by early tomorrow at the latest.
Let's settle on a draft time ASAP in case I have to change up a couple things -- as I mentioned in the email messages, the best time for me would be Wed night on or after 9:30 EDT. I will not be able to be on the message board regularly due to work constraints, but will check as often as possible. I can communicate via Yahoo email.
I've talked to Brian (philflyboy) and he's willing to take over Greg's team if we need a manager to keep the league going.

I can handle two teams if needed also. Solvang sluggers and would keep a team for my Brother if needed. Suggest that we go ahead and start Draft ASAP so that we can have endless time between picks or 8 hour intervals ??? I kept some notes from last year so that I will send my keepers next.

Marko/Solvang - as I understand it, the hope is to do a true "live draft", meaning we knock off the entire draft in one sitting.
If we revert to a slow draft at kafenatid, we won't finish until well after the season starts. (That would be OK with me too, however).

I am sure that Mike Chen will signup giving us 7. Why dont we wait one more day to see who else will sign up from old team? Then we can retro stats after draft as might be hard to do live one. We should go ahead and recruit at least one person new. Jumpball- lets start with philflyboy. He can signup on Yahoo and once in about two days we know who will not be in then we can give him one of the teams for him to pick keepers.

Philflyball- here is the link to your team. You are going to have a hard time picking the keepers. I presume Mike Chen will post his keepers and joint soon. This means after you we will need one more manager. Mark - is your brother up to this.

I assume you can set kafenatid for 1 minute picks, thereby simulating a fast live draft. Is that what we are planning? If someone isn't available, no one will have been able to set up a queue - and kafenatid isn't really well configured for setting up a very long queue (suitable for a full draft).

More assumptions: -- We probably can not use Yahoo! for drafting due to the lack of lead time and/or the way the league is set up. IIRC, I think there's a 90 second time limit there. -- There's probably not enough time to input 40 picks (especially since there's only 32 above) before we start so we'll each have to do that on our own during the draft. -- It looks like we aren't going to be ready to start a draft tonight . . . and my schedule is full the next 2 nights. I could draft on Saturday or Sunday, late morning/afternoon EST if we want to shoot to draft this weekend.
BTW, I'd suggest using a 2 minute increment -- most people will take less than that, but if someone needs to use the can . . .

To me it looks like Kafenatid is the best way. If we set this for 2 minute picks this will get it done fairly fast. All we actually need now if for Mike Chen & Mark's brother to pick their keepers. Saturday is hard for me but any time Sunday after 1PMEST is OK for me. Any other comments

I've cleared a portion of my schedule, so I now can be available to draft from 6:30PM until 8:30PM EDT on Thursday (that's tomorrow!). Since I have the 2nd pick, I can easily make a 2 man queue and you guys can start a few minutes earlier if you want. If you twist my arem, I might be persuaded to make a 12 man queue!
I can also start a draft anytime between 10AM and 3PM Saturday and anytime after 11AM on Sunday. Monday night will be tough because I have to get back from Camden Yards first :-) but unless there's extra innings, I should be able to start by 8-ish.
Welcome back deepsnapper! Best wishes for improved health!

Thanks guys. I enjoy playing however bad at 5x5 I am.
Other than a Rotohog team I bought during football, I passed on baseball this year as the drafts started so early and I was looking at eye & shoulder surgery back in January, Now they're both on hold.
I can draft anytime. I have the first pick. let me setup my cheatsheet and I'll be ready in a short time with the first pick, but as far as a fast live, the weekend would be better.

Thanks Mike! Since you set it up, you have the ability to enter the 4 rounds of keepers. It's either that or we'll have to do that as part of the draft process.
I was going to suggest that we start this early as a slow draft with no time limit in order to get in a round or two before 9PM EDT Sunday night, but philflyboy just informed me he is out of town until Sunday evening.
See y'all at kafenatid at 9Pm Sunday night!

Perhaps we should plan for a simultaneous group IM session as well? That would allow a means for us to communicate with each other during the draft. That may be particularly important if someone is missing, or has to step away for some period.
I'm not particularly adept at instant messaging, and have no idea how to set up a group session, but I'll bet someone in the league knows how to do it.
The alternative would be to use this forum. But the forum isn't very good for realtime discussions.
Finally, we need to make sure that everyone is available for the draft - or has made an extensive queue in advance. I think everyone should confirm that they'll be there. Assume nothing!

If we're still not ready on Kafenated, let's not screw Will by starting the draft tonight. He needed to put a monster queue into OTC as he couldn't draft tonight. Did he give a giant queue to anyone?
A few games delay won't make the differece with regards to my finish in the end. I keep drafting the same players and expecting differenct results. lol
I'd rather start right with everyone in the draft if that's possible (or at least represented).

I emailed Will this afternoon to see if he had a queue he could send me. So far, no response. I imagine he might already be away.
If so, we should suspend until another time - or else just run a slow draft. Marko doesn't seem to realize we were going to try a fast live draft tonight anyway. Mike was proposing 2 minutes per pick; Marko suggested 8 hours! Maybe others were similarly confused?

Agreed. After 8 years I certainly wouldn't want to start drafting w/o coldwater coyote. The draft's half the fun.
If Michael gets the last couple of us signed up, he can input the keepers and we start a slow live until the fast live clock can begin at a TBD time later on.

Guys, I goofed badly. When setting the order, I got philflyboy confused with jumpball because of the phillyphan team name. Argh...
I've emailed Fred at kafenatid to see if he can change it since I cannot change the order. The only other option is to switch the 2nd and 4th teams draft in each others place and I can sort out the rosters after the draft?

I'm here and ready to go . . . am expecting to be here for a couple hours tonight picking a full complement of players. If that changes, we're probably going to run into other issues with people not available. If we've got 9 people here tonight, I suggest we go for it.
Let me know what I have to do to resolve the philflyboy / philliephan issue.

Mu kafenatid page is refreshing every 15 seconds, which is too often (and much more than every 10 minutes as indicated at the bottom of the screen). Does anyone know how to change the refresh rate?
BTW, do we have a chat area set up? Can we use the one at kafenatid?

The page will also refresh when a pick has been made. If this is not the issue, then it may be a known Internet Explorer issue. The should go to Tools > Internet Options. Under the "General" tab, click the "Settings" button for "Browsing History." Select "Every time I visit the webpage" for Temporary Internet Files.

And don't set it for free form, or I may not be able to see your queue at all.

I no longer have Dennis' #. He mentioned that he may not be around, and it doesn't look like he has a queue.
If we're stuck for another 10 minutes or so, should we reschedule? I am not sure what Kafenatid will do if there is no queue and we hit the time limit.

If we hit the time limit, his pick is skipped and the next person can choose. The skipped pick can be made up at any time. You can avoid that by lengthening the clock, or by turning off the clock altogether.

Unitl he gets here (assuming he's coming), we could pick for him by choosing the player that is rated the highest by Yahoo! among all remaining players with some allowance for position. Currently the player ranked highest by Yahoo is Beltran, but with 3 OFs already on his roster, I'd suggest the next highest (Phillips).
We'll also need to shorten the clock if we're going to try to finish before sunrise.
|
105 | Mike Chen
ID: 352252323 Sun, Mar 30, 2008, 21:27

I'd love to shorten it. I wanted to give us a chance to have everyone present. With 2 minutes, it may be tough to check for the highest rated player.

Looks like we are stuck.
I'd suggest we revert to a slow draft for now, with something like a 4-6 hour clock, and some night-time pause.
However, we really need to encourage everyone to make active use of queues if you cannot stay on top of this. We need to average less than one hour per pick (including night) in order to complete this in a week.
Feel free to name me as a DP - I'm usually around. As long as you set your queue to make only the top name available, you don't risk tipping your hand. But make sure you do make the queue available, or it does no good.

I think the suggestion of a semi slow draft through the week is going to be the easiest solution. Trying to get everyone together one night to draft will be tough. Other option is to see if yahoo still has a fast draft date for this week so that a person can have his team auto drafted for him if he can't show up.

Problem for me is that slow draft would be tough since I'm in Tokyo, so when the draft would have the most activity, I'll be asleep. But if that's what everyone wants to do, I'll set up a queue or have someone back in the US draft for me.

I'd much prefer a fast draft as I can not get to the site at work. Making queues when you are looking for a particular position is tricky -- say player A, B, and C all play 2B -- I put them at the top of my queue because I want to draft that position next. I may wind up with ALL 3 of them on my team if the draft progresses quickly.

Below is Yahoo's answer to Retro stats. Looks like no player rotation, just go with your best.
Any non head-to-head Custom League that completes its draft after the start of the baseball season can elect to have the stats of their starting lineup made retroactive to the start of the season. The commissioner may choose to use this option during the league creation or set it at any time prior to the draft date via the Edit League Settings page. Retroactive stats always go back to the beginning of the regular season.
Once your league's draft is complete, this setting cannot be changed.
After your league has drafted, the commissioner will have the next seven days to select the date on which your retroactive stats will be run—there will be seven days from which to choose.
By 11:59 p.m. PT on the night before the retroactive stats are to be run, all teams should have set their starting lineups to contain the players they wish to receive retroactive stats for. All teams will only be given retroactive stats for one lineup, so the team that is set on this day will act as though it was active for the entire season.
Once the retroactive stats have been run, they will not be rerun or cleared. All managers need to have their lineups set before the chosen date.
Once the retroactive stats have been run, the league will begin to function like any other.
If the commissioner does not set a retroactive stat date within the seven-day window, the league will begin to receive stats on the following (eighth) day—without any retroactive stats.

Guru:
I am going to be out of pocket until about 8PM tonight so I have a queue ready.
I think the retro stats is the way to go. I will email everyone and post here once this is done giving the date of start so that everyone can set their lineup. This gives a little different twist.

I like the idea of retro . . . can we go back 4 years for my Randy Johnson retro stats? ;-)

Except that 4 years ago, Randy Johnson was on MY team!

210 picks completed in just 108 hours. Very impressive!
That's an average of just 31 minutes per pick - including pause periods.

Dave...thanks for helping out on my picks. We had a great time in Seattle including a visit to Safeco Field (really cold)... only to see JJ Putz get injured. Are you sure that you didn't deliberately skip Johnny Cueto in my queue!

[183] I think we had over 108 hrs. of downtime during the original draft 9 years ago. Seems a long time ago since that first one on Sandbox.
I had a great time drafting with ya'll. I also want to thank the DP's who helped me out with my picks.

I have set the teams this morning on Yahoo. Let me know if there are any errors. Remember there are no DL slots in this league. I would like to see at least one & I vote for two DL slots. What does everyone think?
Also I think we have retro stats but I am not for sure but to make sure everyone needs to set their teams based upon what has happened in the past. Cueto was not in the Yahoo base on time to get his stats (I think). Good luck to all!

We have so many bench slots already. I don't think we need any DL slots.

I don't see any mention of retro stats in the league settings. Are you sure the league us set for that?
Do we start tracking actual stats on Sunday (4/6)? If so, everybody needs to set their lineup on that date.
Or will retro stats (if they are being used at all) continue to apply until the date they are activated?
Very confused...

The league settings page simply says "Start scoring on April 6". That implies to me that retro stats are not enabled. And the rules say that if retro stats aren't selected before the league is activated, they cannot be used.

What the main page says about retro stats is:
"You have elected to run retroactive stats for your league. As a result, all previously accumulated stats will be cleared and rerun from opening day. Please make sure all of your managers have their desired retroactive stat lineup set by 11:59pm PT on Tuesday, Apr 8. You can also cancel this action via the retroactive stat tool."
This means that the team in effect on April 8th at 11:59PM will accumulate the stats up to that date. Maybe it will only be from April 6th but I will check to see if I can make it go back earlier but maybe it will only start that date.

Interesting feature I like with the "drag & drop" vs "classic" Yahoo menu type. If you've made roster moves using the D&D menu, you get a warning msg. if you try to maneuver away from the roster page if you haven't submitted the roster changes. (I can use all the help I can get.)
No DL unless the bench size can be reduced.

with 8 bench slots, no DL slots are necessary.

Quick question about retro: does it matter how we have our lineups set today and tomorrow? . . . or will everything be calculated as of the end of all games on Tuesday no matter what we do with our lineups the next 2 days?

I am guessing that the only lineups that count are the ones in effect on the end of the day on the 8th but I honestly am not 110% certain. It might be good to also set the lineups today and tomorrow.
I see from the vote no DL slots are necessary.

Finally, some clarity:"Your commissioner has elected to run retroactive stats for your league. Your league data will be updated on Wednesday, Apr 9 and all previously accumulated stats will be cleared and rerun from opening day. Please make sure your desired players are in active roster spots by 11:59pm PT on Tuesday, Apr 8."

It is not very often I sit on top of a roto league especially against quality opponents. I have to take a snap shot of this while it lasts!! I will be in my rightful spot toward the bottom soon, no worries!
