Got an extra 2B/MI. All starters. Not looking for much. Middle reliever would do it or multi player deal.

FA pool looking pretty shallow.

Youngroman, I sent you an email.

First trade of the year

mjd gets Hideki Okajima, RP, BOS

wiggs gets Luis Castillo, 2B, NYM

Little early for a trade, but I have an extra starting MI and wiggs needs one.

I'm still trying to figure out why I thought I had enough depth at MI to trade one. It's been a revolving door at that position ever since.

At least I have one thing in common with the league leader.

We both recently dropped a player who hit 2 bombs tonight.

Could it be that a .736 OPS isn't that valuable for someone that won't steal 25+ bases? I like Matthews' counting stats, and probably should not have dropped him while keeping Giambi, but in the OF that kind of OBP and SLG without big SB totals is a bit damaging......don't you think?

When you only get 4 bench spots and no DL I think it's important to grab proven players when they're dropped even if they are historically slow out of the gate. I'd rather have him than Reed Johnson, Kevin Millar, Jay Payton, or even the scrub I dropped for him, Eugenio Velez. I agree that he might not be worth the #2 waiver position, but who is in a league this deep?

Also, I've regretted burning high waver priorities in the past.

As we round the one-third pole, some boom and bust picks:

Matt G:
Boom: Lester (17), Dempster (24)
Bust: Byrnes (3), Oswalt (4)

WTF happened to Oswalt? Byrnes on DL now but has time to turn it around.

loki:
Boom: Soria (11), Wood (18)
Bust: VMart (3), Lowell (6)

What's higher: VMarts SLG or the weight of your favorite team's OT? It's closer than you think.

MBT:
Boom: Soto (10)
Bust: Practically his whole draft after round 12

Not much value in the second half of the draft.

youngroman:
Boom: Berkman (2), Fuentes (25)
Bust: Corpas (9), Lowe (12)

Pretty amazing when your second rounder is a BOOM pick. Berkman is a wrecking machine! Smart handcuff of Fuentes to Corpas.

Tequila:
Boom: Youkilis (8), Gregg (12), Sherrill (16)
Bust: Markakis (3), Johjima (11)

Perhaps not fair to label Markakis a bust, but compared to some drafted after him, perhaps so.

Me:
Boom: C. Jones (5), Sheets (8), Capps (9), Damon (10), Rauch (22), E. Santana (25)
Bust: Smoltz (6), Delgado (11), Snell (12)

Chipper's been unconscious. Sheets dominant when healthy (still have my toes crossed), Damon really smoking hot right now, E. Santana a season-saving flier in round 25.

More later.

In my weekly browse through the league, I noticed that 2 teams are projected to be > 100 innings over their max IP of 1350.

And one team is projected to be > 100 IP under that limit.

Continuing post #23....

Tree
Boom: Rowand (8), Ellsbury (9) Wainwright (10), Marcum (15), Nady (24)
Bust: Figgins (3), Putz (4), everybody but Marcum and Nady from pick 11 on!

Boom picks making him ride high while he awaits some early season disappointments (including Felix) to come around. He is hampered by not getting enough consistent value in the 2nd half of the draft.

Goldcoach
Boom: Theriot (15), Duchscherer (20)
Bust: Rios (4), Sheffield (5), Liriano (8), Buchholz (10), Marmol (11)

A little rough to call Marmol a bust, but he was expected to close. Joba has time to be boom OR bust. Lucky for Goldcoach he struck gold (pun intended) with his top 3 picks.

Jackhammers
Boom: K-Rod (4), T. Hudson (10), Percival (12), Quentin (18)
Bust: Cabrera (1), Del. Young (5!), Maybin (13)

K-Rod's been unbelievable - amazing to me since I personally saw him look awful in 3 games in Spring Training. I'm stunned at Cabrera's year - hell the entire Tiger lineup is baffling.

......more to come

my pitching is finally on its way out of a 1/1 in ERA/WHIP. expect that points to get higher and higher. I hope I can get them back up to 4.00/1.32. this could give me an additional 15 points with likely a few more in wins and saves (I am currently having 5 closers) too. The real question is: did I give up too much punch in order to help fix my leaking pitching staff?

I have to hope I have generated a sufficient buffer in offense to absorb the hit. I have no doubt Lackey will help me a lot in pitching....I just wish Yahoo didn't take 4 days to process a F-ing trade and I could have had Lackey for tonight's start. Maybe Manny will hit a couple of jacks to soften the blow.

currently, the first four starters and first closer i drafted are ALL on the DL.

my second closer, Jason Isringhausen, spent time on the DL, and still hasn't returned to the full time closer role.

in fact, with the exception of middle reliever Manny delCarmen and Taylor Tankersly, EVERY pitcher i drafted has spent time on the DL or is no pitching this season because of injury.

i know some teams do get hit by the injury bug, but this all seems pretty remarkable to me.

Everyone remember this day......the day I started talking trash.......as the day of my downfall:

You know it sucks to be 30 points ahead of the league when you have an offensive day like this:

.447 OBP
.613 SLG
11 runs
11 rbi
2 SB's

.......and gain ONE POINT!

It SUCKS to be the MAN!

43youngroman

and that point was in SB because I only went with

.408 OBP
.537 SLG
8 runs
7 rbi
0 SB

which is pretty much the average I get every single day. only the SB was missing.

now if my pitching would be better. Scott Kazmir has a 6.30 ERA in his last 2 starts. Fuentes got shelled with 5 runs in less than an inning. you need to eat a lot of innings to recover from that. at least I get more saves and Ks lately. 120-125 pts are still possible.

and yes it sucks to always finish 2nd.

Your counting stats are light years ahead of me and everyone else, youngroman, and you have a good chance to pass me in OBP. Steals will be a crapshoot for me - I'm actually surprised by where I'm at. But I can't imagine me losing much more than 10 points or so in offense even with injuries.

My rotation is hot right now (Lackey, Nolasco, Lohse, Buehrle) but losing Capps hurts and I will drop in saves. But I think, overall, I will improve in pitching and should be able to stay above 120 points by year end. If youngroman can come up to that number it can still be very close.

There's a long way to go but naturally I am thrilled with my 1st half. It could hardly have gone better.

My midyear assessment of my team is that it will be impossible to catch Species. If all my players have a great second half, I would max out at 115 points. This of course will never happen. Species, I would like a thank you for not being patient with Nolasco and also from Rev for doing the same with Bradley. I never learn.

re 41:
8 runs
13 RBI
3 SB
.548 OBP
.841 SLG

on an off-day for a few teams and I lose 0.5 pts. that sounds not right! too bad Morrow decided to give up 2 homers.

looks like I max out my points in the hitting categories at 78. now its time to get back some of the pitching points. -0.16 in ERA would get me an additional 5 points, -0.02 in WHIP an additional 2, add 1 or 2 pts in Ks and I'll peek at around 124pts. is that enough to catch Species? I doubt it, but I am trying.

I am thinking for weeks now if I should trade for a better pitcher to up my pitching cats, but I can't decide which batter to trade. they all go regularly nuts. since my pitching got better in the last couple of weeks I am still waiting to pull the trigger.

42 K in 61.2 innings (+/- 3)

I lost all of my closers (Capps, Street, Rauch) and my SP's have gone into a slump......I still feel I have the staff to regain some lost points, but yr and I seem to trade places in OBP, SLG, SB and K's on a daily basis! being 1st in 6 categories is awesome. but the worst for you is: I am still not on my peak. I can gain another few points in SB (5 SB for 3pts), W (3 W for 2pts), ERA (0.07 for 3pts), WHIP (0.03 for 2pts). in a perfect world thats 10 more points.

4 weeks to go and we are within 0.5 points.

I wont fall below 75pts in hitting and SV and K are pretty much an additional 32pts. for me it is a huge challenge to gain a few more points in ERA, without falling too much back. that category is really close and a small improvement looks to be the best way to win it.

lets hope that Oliver Perez and Zach Miner are not imploding today.

Yeah, it's been a crazy August!

I think you're going to pull away down the home stretch, Roman. Too many of my horses who have carried me this far are leaking oil down the stretch. Pretty soon my Angel aces (Lackey, Santana) will go into "get ready for the playoffs mode" and start having 6 inning stints, limiting their K's and ability to get wins.

Well if youngroman wins he will deserve it. He outmanaged me and I rested on the laurels of my outstanding draft. I am going to be short some ridiculous amount of games (in excess of 100) and there is no excuse for that. That alone had to have cost me 30 runs and 30 rbi, and if I had those stats it would not be this close.

But, the fact is that I was lazy and didn't closely follow the little injuries on my team that caused so many day-to-day reports......or I would miss 3 or 4 day absences out of laziness.

Saturday will sure be interesting!

It really looks like a SB or a win will decide the season.

I had a pretty good draft too and managed to get some good players off waivers to fill in when some of my players went down. what impressed me most is that most of my players played every day and because of that I missed only 44 games all season. and around 30 of these 44 were in the last 2 weeks where a lot of my players were a little banged up and sat out for a game or two. the key for me domination on the hitting side is that I maximized my games played.
if only my pitching would have been a little better lately. I was down to an ERA of 3.9 and am currently back up to 4.14. I am now hoping that I play the right starting pitchers tomorrow to get a final boost in wins and hopefully in ERA and WHIP too.

YR deserves the "Best Manager Award" for out managing the entire league with nearly optimal use of his players. All of his position players with the exception of catcher have played very close to the maximum, and catcher projects to 147 games. However YR is max'd out in innings, and will definitely lose 1 point in Ks and probably 1-1.5 points in Ws. Good luck to YR and Species; you have made it interesting for those of us out of contention.

As for my team, I thought that I had a good chance to move up enough in the standings to make it back to AAA next year. However my #1 draft pick, Matt Holliday, slumped for the last month of the season and my #2, Maglio Ordonez, has slumped for the final two weeks killing my chances of gaining in the hitting categories. As the season went on, my goal dropped to getting back to AAA in 2009 because my pitching fell apart with a season ending injury to Yovani Gallardo and an injury to Aaron Harang along with my inability to replace them with quality from the WW. Winning was not going to happen, but getting back into AAA would have been nice.

Looks like it going down to the wire.

I've been from top 5 to last in the standings. Long strange trip.

Happy to requalify for AAA.

loki - I am not maxed out in innings. I have 1.2 left. I will have a total of 4 starters today in addition to my 5 relievers. this means I could get around 20-25 Ks and a win or two today and I think this should keep me at the top in Ks and may get me 0.5pts in wins too. I also added a lot of base stealers today. in case I want to use them tomorrow to secure my points there too.

I still don't know if it will be enough.

YR-My understanding of the rules is that once one of your pitchers throw 1.2 innings, you will no longer accumulate any pitching points. This is why I assumed that I would pass you in K's and possibly W's. Anyone have any input on this?

Looking at the Stat Tracker, your interpretation appears to be correct. However it still makes no sense that a team can gain points from innings pitched over the maximum. I am going to post on the RIBC thread to get Guru's opinion.

As of now Stat Tracker has Species at 128.5 and YR at 126.5. As per Guru and Yahoo, YR's rule interpretation is correct. My lineup will be changed to try to advance in W's and K's.

that was close. Species wins by 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 W, 0.01 in ERA.

this year this is the second 2nd place for me (after RIHC) where I lose that close. that hurts. I am now hoping that my RIFC season is more successful. it looks like I will start the season 8-0 with the most total points overall. looks again promising, but we all know that means nothing.

My compliments to the winner, i tried to make my best to make life difficult for Species and for Youngroman but i realized very soon that my gap was too much.
I'm very sorry for youngroman as i fell short of 1 run and 1 rbi, too bad, especially when during the last days a lot of player were scratched from the line up.

Thanks to everybody

Wow that was incredible. At bat-by-at bat saw swings in points. As the Yankee game progressed, on multiple occasions (i.e. a Giambi at bat) I both tied YR in both SLG and OBP, only to drop back out of that tie! Then Damon walked and scored a run which broke a tie with Tequila in runs!

I, perhaps foolishly, had decided I would rather die with honor than cower in safety when I chose to start John Lackey and Ervin Santana against Texas. I should have especially known with Lackey - he had been awful this month anyway. But in the end, my ego and not wanting to back into winning - combined with what I THOUGHT was a safe lead in ERA - I went against my gut and started those guys anyway. Thank goodness it didn't cost me the title.

Thanks to everyone for a great season. I actually didn't know the season ended yesterday, hence my Det/Min pickups. Great job youngroman on a superior managing job - I got lucky with a great draft and strong start. I'm sure you can extract some revenge in our next league.

This was exciting. I did try to keep whittling away, as Freddie Garcia [Real Life Manager] said, "for the integrity of the game". A good and well fought win for species and an excellent push by the contenders. Congrats and a special thanks to MJD for being will to act as commissioner

Thanks to all who participated to the end for maintaining the competitive balance of the league.

Congrats to our winner, Species, and to all those advancing. I'll send a report to the appropriate thread so it's on record for next year. My thanks to the league member who picked up the tab on Kafenatid.

Please consider a donation to the RotoGuru site. Without it, none of this would be possible.

Guys, thanks for an interesting year from a bit of an absentee manager. Just too much other stuff going on this summer to give this league it's deserved attention.

But there is a movement to not allow inactive managers to advance. See the thread in the baseball forum.
