Here's our 16 managers:

1.Graydog
2.wesley
3.Donkey Hunter
4.maspero
5.Bean
6.Toral
7.AUSTIN
8.Robine
9.RobJ
10.Pancho Villa
11.MikeV
12.Aman
13.JL
14.Tilt
15.waterboy
16.Electroman

(We have a few managers who are playing in another RIBC league doubling up to help out. If some additional manager playing in no other RIBC league comes along in the next 15 hours or so, we may be able to accommodate him, but basically we should be moving along fairly rapidly from here.)

By tomorrow morning or so you should receive an e-mail telling you how to register at Kafenatid for the draft. Please register for it as soon as you can.

If you register at Kafenatid using a handle bearing no resemblance to the handle in which you signed up for this thread, please indicate your sign-up and Kafenatid names so we know who you are.

Our previous thread was here

While we get ourselves registered in Kafenatid, we can discuss certain matters relating to the timing of the league. I mentioned them in the last thread and will start the discussion of them in the next post.

My thoughts about timing issues:

1. Guru has suggested that we just assign draft positions randomly, rather than choose them, and I am inclined to agree. If anyone has strong feelings against this you might go ahead and express them.

Guru has offered to handle the random assignments himself. I will not ask him to do so until everyone is signed up in Kafenatid, so we have a day or so to talk about this.

2. I suggest we should start with a 4-hour clock on weekdays and a 6-hour clock on weekends. We have some catching up to do and with some attention to queueing we should be able to handle a 4-hour clock, as the other AA league was thinking of doing from the beginning anyway.

We're simply not in a position to have no clock on weekends. If someone has a real problem on weekends we can talk anout it.

I am inclined towards a 8 AM EDT - Midnight live time (and Midnight - 8 A.M. draft pause). What do you think?

I'm registered at Kafenatid now. This is my first time with this set up, so be gentle. Been playing fantasy sports since 1970 though (started with stratomatic baseball).

I am good with any format/times just spell them out before we start.

If we dont finish the draft before the season starts, will yahoo retroactively give us stats?

Bean:

Yahoo! can be set to give us retrospective stats or we can start a bit late. We can discuss that if it comes to that eventuality.

(BTW Andy Messersmith pitched a perfect game in my 1975 S-O-M league last week. First perfecto I've ever seen, and I've been playing longer than you.)

Messersmith, havent heard that name in a long time.

If you want to see perfect games, try using Walter Johnson or Pete Alexander in their best years. I think there may be one or two Bob Gibson cards in the 60s that might be deadly too.

maspero:

I've played in RIBC leagues with managers from Austria and Greece and in a different slow draft league with someone from Italy and things worked out all right.

I suppose the danger is that you might head off to bed while the clock is still running here, too far away from your next pick to leave a queue and things might move faster than expected leaving you timing out while soundly asleep. If we get a situation like that we can try and find some work-around: I could temporarily stop the clock until a time when you would be awake and in action again. Not likely to happen often if at all.

1. We are up to 14 registered. Before I launch a hunt for the other two I need to figure out who they are, and to do that I have to figure out the handles, from the first post in this thread, of these 2 registrants at Kafenatid: tekeballer and mwm2355.

2. The Yahoo! league has been created and invitations sent out to all managers.

We have 15 registered at Kafenatid now. I can't tell whether Kafenatid registrant tekeballer is wesley or RobJ. But looking at back threads, wesley indicated interest in the first qualifying leagues thread Feb. 24 and hasn't been heard from since, so my suspicion is that the missing registrant is wesley and that he is not going to show up.

It will be 2 days later tonight since the 16 managrts were fixed and I think at this late date anyone still interested should have been heard from by now. I am going to ask Guru to come over and set a random draft order for a 15 man league at his convenience. I propose then to set the draft order and start the draft almost immudiately, with no clock. If everything goes quickly and smoothly my inclination is to start the clock tomorrow morning. I would consider having one day with no clock if people feel they need to get acclimated but my experience has been that someone usually lets the whole clock run down making the idea more trouble than it's worth.

Thanx Guru.

The draft has been started. Pancho Villa is up.

Some rules and guidelines pertaining to the draft excerpted from Guru's RIBC guidelines:

We will use this thread for logistical communications, to help others anticipate potential delays, to recruit someone to accept a queue, to announce or solicit trades, and to coordinate changes in the clock. Please check this thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.

Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned either here or in the rationale threads, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out.

When you select a player, please list him at the position that you primarily expect to use him. Of course, these positions are not binding, and are only indicative of your anticipated usage. Yahoo position eligibilities will be used throughout the season.

The draft software allows you to set up a queue, and to make that queue available to any other manager who you authorize as a designated picker. Be aware that, as commish, I am automatically authorized as a DP for everyone. Your queue will not be visible to your DPs (or me) until it is your turn to pick, and you may specify whether the entire queue should be visible, or only the top name. However, if you do not make your queue "available", then no one will be able to see it when it is your turn. If you want your queue to be used, then please be sure that you have it set as available. If you do not want your queue used, then be sure to make it unavailable. If it is your turn and a queue is available to me, I will make that pick for you unless you have posted explicit instructions to the contrary in this thread.

In order to keep the draft moving at an acceptable pace, please make active use of queues if you expect to be unavailable when it is your turn. Recent drafts have gone very smoothly due primarily to the active use of queues.

The draft will last for 25 rounds. You are not required to draft a player for every position.

Yes, this is one of those days. First once the draft started I could see additional info about the managers and I see tekeballer is wesley, not Rob J. Welcome wesley.

Then 5 minutes ago I get a e-mail from RobJ saying he had just tried to register and the draft was closed. Must have missed by less than half an hour.

The Kafenatid commissioner instructions say that draft order cannot be changed or additional managers added. Nevertheless I've stopped the draft and will e-mail Fred to see if he will restart the draft. I know he was around earlier today so I am hoping it's not a long wait.If RobJ can be added I will roll a 20-sided number die and insert RobJ in the position of the first number I roll between 2 and 16 so everyone will be about in the same place as originally set. (Pancho Villa has already picked and will keep his first position).

Sorry for the delay. We'll get moving by the end of this evening at the latest. You can always use your time setting your firat round queues...

Go to Kafenatid.net
Go to the On The Clock section on your left
and click on Home
Click on Draft Home for the Northern League draft
You'll come to the page where picks are made. When your turn comes up a slot will open up saying "Player Last Name". Type in the player you want to puck, last name first. Click. You will be asked to add his position, and then asked one more time if you are sure that is your pick.

For queues, click on queue management just above the list of managers. You'll see a section "Add a Player". You can look through that list of players and select as many as you want. You'll see the red notice above this saying that your queue is UNAVAILABLE. That means no one can see it. Once you have a queue you are ready to go with, click on "Make Your Queue Available". When your queue is available your Designated Pickers and the Commissioner (me) can see the top name on your queue only and make the pick for you.

Back on the previous page click on "Designated Pickers" amd name some. It's good practice to name the person who is picking right after you as a DP. That way he won't be held up waiting for you when he's ready to pick.

Per 24:

Fred has very kindly had Kafenatid restart the draft for us. RobJ will register at Kafenatid -- hopefully very soon -- I will add RobJ to the draft order, leaving the rest of the order in place -- I will reset the Kafenatid draft order, start the draft, repeat Pancho Villa's already made pick with him and we will be off again.

Rolling my 20-sided die, RobJ's position is:

12

Our new order is:

1 Pancho Villa
2 Tilt
3 JL
4 MikeV
5 Aman
6 Donkey Hunter
7 Graydog
8 Toral
9 AUSTIN

After all this kerfuffle, RobJ has distressingly not yet registered at Kafenatid. I have informed him in e-mails that if he had not registered by 3 P.M. that I would restart the draft without him. So the draft will begin again a few minutes after 3 at the latest; before if RobJ shows up and registers. I am checking every 20 minutes or so and have been since 9 PM last night. I had assumed that under the circumstances he would have checked his e-mail and registered sither last thing before going to bed last night, first thing in the morning or first thing after getting to work. It seems I was too optimistic.

Sorry for the delay.

We are restarted. mwm2355 is up.

There is no clock for the rest of today. Starting tomorrow morning we will have a 4-hour clock on weekdays and a 6-hour clock on weekends, running from 7 AM- midnight. Check to see where you are in the list before you go to bed.

For those new to Kafenatid: you will receive a notice by e-mail when you are up. If you do not receive one the first time you pick, check your spam folder and see if the notices are being sent there.

A reminder re queues: for them to be of any use, you must a) make the queue available; and b) have someone to pick for you -- a designated picker. I am a designated picker for everyone, and will usually be checking in at least every 4 hours, but I offer no guarantees.

Be warned that I will be out of computer touch Friday night between 6 P.M. or so and 10:30 P.M. or so and virually all day Saturday, from around 8:30 to around 9 P.M. If you are relying on a queue during that period make sure you have a designated picker(s) authorized. If you know that you are going to be away for a period, you can go on this thread and ask if anyone will be around and able to be a DP for you during that period.

Man I hate making my first 2 picks on the Q, but what can you do.

Exactly what you're doing, if we expect to finish on time.

The regular season starts in 18 days. Toral needs a day or two to enter the draft, so we have 16 days. That means we need to have a minimum of over a round and a half each day, including weekends.

That can only be accomplished by committing to using the que system. 3 and 4 hour waits between picks will doom this draft to failure.

5 picks in three minutes. See how fast things move when people leave a queue?

tekeballer's 1.13 and 2.03 picks can be made any time.

If tekeballer has not picked by 2.13 (one roind after his missed pick). I will (if I'm around) stop the draft and make a pick for tekeballer following an objective method I will keep to myself to the moment. The idea is that the team suffers consequences for the missed pick but is not put into a position where it is uncompetitive.

After tekeballer's not picking last night, I e-mailed him to remind him that he was up on a clock this morning. He has a Yahoo! e-mail so I also sent him a message through Yahoo! to ensure it got to his e-mail promptly. If tekeballer has in fact dropped out...I forget what RIBC does in that situation. Especially before making a pick. I'll mull that one over a while.

Please use queues so we can finish this draft before the season starts.

tekeballer missed his 1st pick. I think its safe to assume he will miss his 2nd pick too. He will then, no doubt, quit. If not, he will lose interest over the season since he will have a hard time being competitive. Any way we can speed over his pick in later rounds, assuming he misses 2nd pick too?

Then there were 14.....

His second pick has already been skipped as per RIBC practice. It would probably be better to drop his team entirely rather than have to draft players for a phantom team.

Bean, you probably have something there. As commissioner I can skip his picks manually but that means a delay anytime I am not around and his pick comes up. I may consult Guru and see what has been done in RIBC before.

Toral,

I have a three part question for you:

1) The draft would be greatly enhanced if we could sort players and stats of only the still available players. You can sort players and stats in the yahoo league, but it will show all players until the team rosters are entered. Will Yahoo allow you to enter rosters as the draft progresses or do you have to do that at the end of the draft only?

2) If you can enter picks in yahoo as the draft is in progress that would be great. I've used that during live drafts on yahoo. Will yahoo allow you to designate a second person to act as commissioner?

3) If so, I would volunteer to enter the picks with some diligence (I'm retired), enchancing everyone's ability to use yahoo stats sorting capability during the draft. Of course a few people would have to quit dragging their feet about signing onto yahoo. You could remove me as an alternate commisioner after the draft. What do you think?

Bean,

I think we may be able to do this.

I can't appoint an assistant commissioner. But I could hand the commissionership over to you. You would have to promise to give it back....

What you would do is enter the players gradually under Offline Draft Results and, crucially, check Hide Taken Players at the bottom of the list of players.

To test if this will work, someone please enter the league, look under players and tell ne, aho do you see listed as the #1 O-ranked player at SS?

Now we'll have to concentrate on getting the last 2 teams entered.

While Bean did not indicate that he did not want the same position twice, if the queue system results in managers being stuck with players they don't want they will simply stop using queues. And Bean is new to Kafenatid. So I would rather stop the draft and check here than press ahead immediately.

There are availabale queues from tekeballer and maspero so if Bean is around we may still make some more good progress tonught.

Yesterday smoked!

I see where Robine has been up for a while, which indicates to me he may be a West Coast guy.

Just for the sake of clarity, maybe all managers could post their location, so we can better understand late night and early morning waits.

Me - Utah MST

Total - Somewhere near Toronto - EST

Maspero - Italy -?

Those are the only ones I know.

There is still one person that hasnt registered for the league at yahoo. By my calculation, it is one of these three:

achess50
Robine
waterboy

There are two teams registered that I cannot be sure belong to these three:

UD Flyers/A C
Switch Hitters/John Boy

For you three, please register if you havent, and tell me which team is yours if you have.

These others seemed obvious to me:

Pancho Villa/Pancho Mountain/BobbyC
mwm2355/Tilt23/mwm2355
JL/JL/Chad
Dilligad/Dilligad/mikevivian
absr/absr/Absr
donkeyhunter/Donkey Hunters/bainlnlay
graydog/graydog/ryangray16
Toral/Niagra Loyalists/realtoral
maspero/Rotten Amoebas/maspero71
tekeballer/tekeballers/WesC

Funny I was just wondering exactly the same thing. Is everybody out on the West Coast or soemthing? If it is more convenient, we could move the clock time to 8 A.M. - 1 A.M.

But then if robine is on the west coast it would mean that he wasn't able to pick after 9:30 P.M. his time either.

im on the westcoast, i have no problems with the stoppage as it is now, im often up late so i can continue queues for people late at night (often 3 to 4 am eastern) to keep the draft moving. the other side of that is i will be relying on cues for morning picks. i have no problem with that and usually can check by 1pm eastern.

1. I will be out of action from 6 P.M. to about 10 P.M. My queue should last 2 rounds.

2. The weekend clock (6 hours) is in effect tomorrow.

3. I am at a function from 9 A.M. till 9 P.M. tomorrow and out of commission. I'll leave the largest queue I can before I leave, but if you're fast enough you may be able to get in a round or two after I miss a pick, which would be amusing.

Yo, Robine! This is the 2nd morning in a row you've held up this draft.

If we all take 4 hours(and counting) to make a pick, then each round will take 60 hours, or 4 1/2 days.

At that rate, we'll be halfway through the draft when the season starts.

Leave a que before bedtime.

Managers who never leave queues and repeatedly use most of their clock should heed the following rules taken from Guru's RIBC instructions:
Although the clock will be set at 6 hours, we cannot make satisfactory progress if many managers use much of that allowance. We need to average about 1.5 rounds (24 picks) per day, so please do your best to keep up that pace. If we fall behind, managers who are chronically slow may be put on an shorter clock.
I would not like to have to reduce a manager's clock to 2 hours and hope I don't have to.

A further RIBC instruction:
Please check this thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.

Robine: please register your team in the Yahoo! league. I have e-mailed you 3 times about this. You are holding up the entry of our draftees onto their teams and our ability to use Yahoo! sorting tools to make our lists of players to draft.

This morning I was working on my queue. I found a player that was on the player list but could not be put in the queue. I sent an e-mail to kafenatid. Will let you guys know how efficient they were. They say 24 hours.

Based on that, he will prolly be available in two rounds, which should be more than adequate. The guy usually goes undrafted in yahoo public leagues.

I'd tell you who he is, but I understand that its forbidden in the RIBC to mention undrafted players. (tease....hehehe)

When I had an unlisted sleeper added he got added within about 2 hours --and then someone picked him up before my next pock, which really sucks.

You can of course draft an undrafted player by picking a placeholder -- someone injured for a long time or who definitely won't be drafted -- and posting here who the real player is. Wouldn't work with a queue though.

OK,

I have entered draft results in yahoo league through pick #12.10. You may now sort player stats of ONLY the available players in the yahoo league. Please take the time to verify your team results with the draft results under draft central on the yahoo front page. Your team roster page will not be available until after the draft is complete.

Since Robine has yet to register on yahoo, I had to create a team for him with my wife's yahoo account. Hopefully it will not be very painful when he finally does join us.

I'll try to keep this thing fairly up to date for the remainder of the draft, please be patient and alert me whenever you see an error.

I've stopped the draft.

Electroman asked that his picks be at two different positions. Casey Blake is 1B/3B; he has Ryan Howard so Blake must be assumed to be a 3B. The DP selected another 3B per Electroman's queue. True, that selection could go to CI but I interpret this as being anither selection at the same position. I am going to reverse it and select someone at a different position.

If it turns out I was wrong Electroman can have [undrafted player] if no one else has selected hum before he checks back into this thread.

The que was unavailable. I don't know how anyone could pick, much less players not in my que.
If you look at my roster, you'll see I have no 2B, although Theriot is eligible.

So the top two players in my que were/are C B and F S, after Hill and Fontenot were taken.

I have 6 other players in my que, a couple 1st baseman that I forgot to delete after picking Helton last round, and 4 OF, but not Griffey.

So, if I had a choice(which I should)

I'd select Freddy Sanchez - 2B -Pitt
and
Josh Willingham - OF - Wash

Your queue can be unavailable (it is; I didn't see it) but Free-Form picking available, at the same rime.

When you go to Queue Management you will see a red bar indicating your queue is unavailable, and below a white bar which indicates whether DPs can see first name only or the whole queue, and below that either a red bar showing that free form picking is unavailable or a green bar showing that it is available. What do you see?

On the que management page, it just has the big red unavailable box.

When I click the make que available, I get the three boxes like normal, green, white, red.

But it's been set to unavailable and the message:

Your que is currently UNAVAILABLE to your designated pickers and the league administration

This is my 10th draft on Kafenatid, and I've never had this problem before.

Next time I'm up, I'm going to delete my designated pickers and see what happens.

You're looking at the wrong box.

The question is whether in the second box below that you see this message:

Make Free-Form Entry Available
Free-Form Entry, or the ability to use the Search functionality, is currently UNAVAILABLE to your designated pickers. Please note that the league admin ALWAYS has the ability to use Free-Form Entry.

Or this one:

Make Free-Form Entry Unavailable
Free-Form Entry, or the ability to use the Search functionality, is currently AVAILABLE to your designated pickers. Please note that the league admin ALWAYS has the ability to use Free-Form Entry.

Hmm...I wasn't the right person to check whether you are on free form entry or not because the admin can always use free-form entry. Next time you might pick one DP, not me, and have him see whether he is able to make a puck for you or not.

I changed it for you. But you can change positions yourself. Go to the main League Draft page, click on your name in the "Manager" column, a list of your picks will come up. Click on the player's name and you can change his position.

Being listed at the wrong position here causes no problems. The position designation is just a convenience for when you look at the draft grid to see what you and other managers need.

From Guru's RIBC instrtuctions: "You may draft a player even if he is not currently listed on Yahoo. In that event, you will have the first rights to claim that player when he is listed, as long as you preserve that roster slot for him."

In Yahoo! the unlisted player is replaced by a placeholder, who may be anyone you are certain won't be drafted. It should be a hitter placeholding for a hitter. That makes it easier for the manager to remember what the guy stands for.

OK, I put Brent Lillibridge, Alexei Ramirez's projected backup shortstop on CWS, in Beckham's place. Obviously tekeballer is a soccer fan and that's why he picked Beckham. ;)

I was curious and looked Beckham up. He played some A ball last year (58 AB) and is listed as an AFL top prospect for what it's worth.

Robine:

You still have not signed up for the Yahoo! league. I suggest you get to it immediately as the draft is likely to end today or tomorrow. After a period for managers to review rosters I will hit the End Draft button and further registration of teams will become impossible. So I wouldn't wait much longer.

With his 25th round pick, Pancho selected Pedro Alvarez, 3B, PIT. He is not available in Yahoo currently.

I've put Ramon Vazquez, a projected back up to Andy LaRoche, 3B, PIT on the roster instead.

Like Beckham, he's another prospect who wasn't projected to make the cut. Good Luck with that.

Well he was the 1st player taken in the MLB draft last June. There's a good chance he'll make the club, since neither LaRoche nor Vazquez exactly strikes fear in the eyes of NL hurlers.

Roger that....nothing wrong with taking prospects in late rounds.

I've took two in the last two rounds myself, Jordan Zimmerman & Gaby Sanchez.

Good Luck to both of us.

BTW, on one depth chart I saw Hinke as the second string 3B over Vazquez. Not sure how that figures in.

I haven't followed baseball closely for a few years, is it common for guys to go straight to the majors from the draft? Any other first rounders projected to start this year in the bigs?

David Price, Alvarez's former teammate at Vandy, was brought up last year by the Rays, and just sent back to the minors today.

I think it's more of a financial move, though, plus, the Rays have experienced a recent high level of success, which has eluded the Pirates, who need to put some butts in the stands.

The Rays have two pitchers (Jeff Niemann and Jason Hammel) who are both out of options. Word is that one will be the fifth starter and the other will be long relief. Price was definitely a better pitcher in the spring but as a Rays fan, I can wait awhile before he comes back. His final pitch in last year's ALCS was memorable enough for me.

Isringhausen has also pitched well but also may not make the team.

That's it! After a late and inauspicious start, we really got rolling. That's the fastest slow draft I've ever been in, by a good measure. Thank you for your co-operation un leaving queues, and fast picking. For the rest of your time in fantasy, whenever someone suggests a draft start time that is earlier than you want saying they need 3 weeks for the draft, you can say "Why I was in a draft that did it all in eight days." The RIBC, which usually finishes first in these things is still in Round 21 ;)

Thanks ro Bean for entering the draft results as the draft went on. I usually haven't been able to use the Yahoo! sorting functions in drafts. And I was spared the most tedious hour of being a commissioner, entering draft results.

There are a pair of picks srill to be entered. Then I would ask everyone to go into Yahoo! and examine your team and check that it's the one you drafted. Go to Mock Draft Central/Draft Results/Team. Post hear of you've been given someone you didn't draft. Most people already have their whole draft entered. Please post here as well if you have checked your team and it's OK.

I am starting a draft recap thread. You are invited to discuss the draft, your strategy, what went right and what went wrong.

I will give everyone until SATURDAY MIDNIGHT to check out your team. Sometime on Sunday I will hit the Draft Finished button and start the league. All free agents will be on two-day waivers if you want to start jigging your team around already.

Thanx again.

Other than the post that my team is correct in yahoo post (which it is). Is there any need for this thread anymore? We have a perfectly functional message system in Yahoo. Seems silly to not use it, keeping everything in one place.

We'll keep this thread open until the draft is actually closed, and them start a new thread for in-season discussion. You can talk on that, or Yahoo!, or both of you want. For me, Yahoo! comments aren't as user-friendly as this message board.

I've changed the placeholders.
Reid Brignac, SS, TB is now placeholder for Gordon Beckham. Brett Wallace 3B, SrL is placeholder for Pedro Alvarez. I should have advised Bean to select placeholders who won't be in the major leagues at all, so there's less likelihood of starting them by mistake.

It's all good. That was an amazing draft. Thanks for the DP's that did a great job reading instructions, and making the correspoding picks. Probably one of the best drafts I have taken part in.
