Preseason Discussion

2009 Draft Thread

The draft thread is now open. We will use this thread throughout the draft.

Please do not mention players who are eligible to be drafted.

Please only post draft picks in the draft thread and all other comments here. If there is a traded draft pick, a commish will post that in the draft thread as a way to update the posted draft chart.

If you wish to trade a draft pick, it is still necessary to have a commish approve your trade, but it is not necessary to propose/accept on CBS site during the draft--though you are still welcome to do that. All trades need confirmation so we can be sure terms are understood and aggreeable (email to all commishs is fine as well). If a commish is not around and you are sure the trade will go through, you can ask that manager to pick for you and that pick will be traded once approved.

The commishs will be closely monitoring the pace of the draft and if need be will adjust clocks accordingly. The c clock will be posted here approx. every round.

Anyone in a rebuilding mood, I'm looking for closers/early draft picks and am willing to move top prospect Brett Anderson.

Ref - I repaired the formatting of the draft pick table. You must have selected to save the entire sheet, since you had hundreds of blank columns making the thread display extend way past the screen edge - which made the top post difficult to read, since the resulting table width was too wide.

When you save a section of a sheet for posting, make sure you selectthe required area and then only publish that area.

Figgins was the obvious choice for me:

my only open spots were C + 3B -> match
looking at my stats I had no base stealer -> match
he was picked the 2nd highest of all available players in RIBC drafts -> match

He was on my radar at #4... but I was probably gonna pass cause I am ok with steals.

RE: 3 Thanks. It was really late when I did it and in my rush I must have skipped that step.

RE: 2 I'll be interested to see how many and quickly the guys i let go get drafted. There were a number of quality players who should hve been kept by someone who had to be let go by several managers. Sometimes players just don't fit. I wasn't planning on keeping 3 closers, but the three people who wanted them badly went a different direction than a closer and the others weren't offering anything close to value.

RE: 4 That is the perfect example of what I am talking about. I like Figgins, but he wasn't the best match for my team. I have but one pick in the first 63, but with all the should-be keepers that were tossed back, there should be some players drop to me that wouldn't have. Still, at some point you have to figure should I take best available and try and trade for like value? That's a tough call too because I've done that before and been stuck with two studs at the same position.

Wang was the obvious choice for me (possible 17-19 game winner) despite a low K total.

Lots of talent on that board.

Re Delmon: no guts, no glory. I described him last year as having a dubious future in OBP leagues as a head case who doesn't walk, but he still has a higher ceiling than anyone else available in the draft. Trade for him, no; take him for free, definitely.

I like the Lindstrom pick. I considered getting him and trading one of my closers--but no guarantee it would get me a slugger I needed or a 3b worth anything. With Beltre, I still may not have it. Think he may have gotten into LoDuca's and Gagne's stash in 04! ;)

I don't think there is any question there are some sluggers still available. There are 3-4 guys who will get more than 25 dingers this year, and at least 10-15 who will get 20.

The problem is that there is some dropoff in other areas (like OBP) that make them a liability.

RE: 60

It's amazing how often my ideas, strategy and value of players are questioned in this league. You'd think 4 titles in 6 seasons would give me a little credibility. ;)

Glad all those people laughed at my expense when I drafted Hanley at 1.20 a couple years back. Most think he's overall #1 in fantasy now. I will make my share of gaffes but blue hen and my views are pretty contradictory. He had said that he only liked two of my keepers, period. Maybe that's why we finish each season on the opposite ends of the standings! ;)

(btw, for you that don't know--bh and I are friends!)

I see Adrian Beltre has returned to one of his former homes. I'm disappointed. He needs to be owned by only a few more teams to have been owned by every team in the league.

I'm a lot closer to Ref then BH on the value of players I'd say. Though it has to translate to success in this particular league. Yet.

[63] and [65]. First of all, don't take my word on anything related to fantasy. G20 was about my best finish last year. In TSN, I might have a little more credibility, but NOT in any roto league of any sort.

Granted, I think Ref is twisting my words a bit about his keepers. In fact, looking at his keeper now, I notice he only kept one of the guys he was offering for Braun (Cordero). So naturally he was trying to give up his fodder. Isn't it enough that you got Soria for a song?

bh, no one ever gets a player for you for a song. You'd trade a lot more if you had a better value of players! ;)

Twisting your words? I have the AIM convo archived!

As far as an offer, I never even made an offer to you. Just started naming players on the bubble of my keeper list. Some were in, some weren't. One was on my keeper list unil a minute before the deadline. Still may have made the wrong call on that one. Truth is that this was my most dofficult decision on keepers since I chose to keep Vernon Wells and trade Matt Holliday for a 2nd rounder. This was harder because so many of the players I had to let go fit really well with my other keepers. Every team is different and what works for one, might not work the same way for another. *shrug*

I made several attempts to send the dues notice out tonight, using the league email address. I'm not sure if it went through properly or not. Can anyone tell me if you got a complete email - and did everyone get it? or are some not getting emails delivered through that address.

It should have included info about both dues and the prize pool, as well as sending instructions.

Im looking for an OF slugger and a closer to round out my roster for this year, obviously theres no "starting" closers left in this years draft, but if I land an OF it can change my draft strategy, so I'd prefer to look at possibly making some moves now.

What'd I'd be offering is Tommy Hanson, he was sent down today which in my opinion makes him more valuable for a rebuilder as he may not hit the IP threshold and therefore wouldn't have to be declared a keeper, none the less the reviews of him are stellar from all publications (CBS compared him to Lincecum in todays brief). I'd also look at sending draft picks as well as prospect picks. So for any team rebuilding or retooling with next year in mind that doesn't feel that your borderline 9th keeper OF wont be a staple of your team in the future, or has a closer that may only close a year shoot me an email to discuss options.

Based on the eails I've gotten, a couple seem to be confused about my last post.

I am happy to package say two draft pikcs to move up for one draft pick. I can do that a couple times.

Also, I could possibly trade a closer in some kind of package that would at least include a keeper-quality player. Not interested in trading Cordero straight-up for an upcoming pick exchange. ;)

Pick 2.13 - I was torn between Kouzmanoff and Fields. I take Kouz. Fields goes at 2.15

Pick 3.09 - I took Nady but seriously considered Lopez. Lopez goes at 3.12

Pick 4.09 - I was torn between Maine and Ziegler. I take Maine. Ziegler goes at 4.11

Pick 5.09 - I was torn between Kotchman and Gregg. I take Kotchman. Gregg goes at 5.12

Pick 6.09 - Torn between Cuddyer and Galarraga. I take Cuddyer. Galarraga goes at 6.12

[120] You made the picks yourself. Every pick is between 1 and 4 mins, don't think you're in any jeopardy. ;)

GO needs to pick before 11:00 in order to avoid being the first pick to time out in this draft. Through sic rounds this makes only the fourth pick that even went over two hours. Great job. Saturdays can be very tough days for drafting though.

I like Snells. Ks. Then that's where it ends. :( I made a huge list of SPs last night as I had to go there and Snell didn't make my list. Several who did though have gone since then. Dunno how Kawakami will fare though. Hoping that he will do really well since guys don't know him yet. I like Litsch but I went a different direction because for his team he doens't have a lot of margin for error. He doesn't K guys and he won't win a lot. So banking on ERA and whip--which is good obviously. Villanueva will get some vulture saves early on--but who knows how long it will be for Hoffman to get back.

A few aren't emailing (or doing so consistently) the next managers in line. Most don't keep hitting the refresh button to know when someone has selected. This can really slow down the draft.

Also, I've been finding several players not picked up in CBS. Not all are proxy picks. Please assist us so we don't have an issue with duplicate picks. Might see if CBS draft allows traded picks for next season and we can simply draft both places. That can cause issues at times (proxy picks and no commishs around) so didnt look into it even though they've added the feature. We're still good on time but a lot of people are sitting and waiting on picks to be made and a heads-up really helps.

Would really help if people would pick up their own players. I know i've picked up several for people already. In fact, I was getting ready to post the draft chart when I read it.

Page back on CBS has closed all my IE windows prob another dozen times since I posted it.

OK, off to to figure out a makeup pick now...

Main Entry: Ludd·ite
Pronunciation: \ˈlə-ˌdît\
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps from Ned Ludd, 18th century Leicestershire workman who destroyed a knitting frame
Date: 1811
: one of a group of early 19th century English workmen destroying laborsaving machinery as a protest ; broadly : one who is opposed to especially technological change
— Luddite adjective

I read a HUGE study and comparison of all of the browsers. I wish I had saved it and linked it to the forum. Think it was on PC Pitstop. But anyhow, IIRC, the conclusion was that Chrome was great at first but hasn't been able to keep up with the changes (whatever that means I forget).

In the end they preferred FireFox to IE. I use FF for a few things but I've never been able to get java to work right in FF. In CBS I can't ever see the live scoring, etc. I worked for weeks one season to get it working and finally scrapped it. Got it back last year as this site I use works better for FF. I want anything that's going to make things easier, but I don't have my CBS pword and IE has it stored. Guess I can go get it automatically.

I have two extra picks. I'm looking to move my 12th and 13th for an 11th rounder.

In fact, depending on if there is anyone left that might fit my team well, I would even consider giving my 11th and 13th for someone's 11th.

[212] Species has 23 mins on his C clock and bmd has 1:55 left. If others have multiple picks before the next chart is posted, they may be suspect to timing out as well. It is rare that someone times out of their c clock, but if it does happen, the next person will be on the clock as soon as it expires--just like the per pick clock.

I decided to have all threads in this forum show all posts (rather than just the last 50).

Since most of the longer active threads in this forum are for drafts, this should help when searching for previously picked names (without having to redisplay the hidden posts).

There was some benefit to it. On my blackberry, it was a pain to scroll down to see the newest posts. I think this could be solved by placing a link to go to the expanded page rather than javascript. If the JS didn't work on your device, you could always click the link for better results.

I think 50 is fine, especially in a draft where most posts are one line.

We have the same thing available to us at CBS w/o having to load 240 keepers and prospects. Not sure it allows us to change draft order for trades but will look into that for next season. The best thing is the sortable stats CBS provides for all players remaining.

[265] The draft chart in teh 14th round was still valid. Had traded picks so it can throw you off when you're used to following the same guys.

[266] Tried showing X. Only other way to do it is have another chart showing how many picks a plyaer has left. As of now, I am sure that 14.10, 14.19 and 14.20 will be forfeited (unless traded).

With four forfeited picks, we may get done today afterall.

Let me remind you our rules as far as when the draft ends...

--If all picks have been made and there are no skipped picks unaccounted for, the draft is over.
--If the last pick has been made of the draft. Skipped picks will have three hours from the time they were skipped or until the last pick was made (whichever is greater) to make their pick or it will be forfeited.
--If the last pick of the draft times out, he will have three hours to make up that pick or it will be forfeited.

These rules were put into place because people were intentionally getting skipped in order to find breaking news and run to their computer to pick at any time. There have been suggestions that if the last pick times out he forfeits that pick which is logical, but I didn't want someone who didn't have a c clock left to automatically forfeit.

Please, everyone go through your team and make sure you have all of your drafted players picked up. You should have 23 non-prospects on your team once your draft is over. It's a lot easier than us trying to figure it out. If we turn on waivers and your drafted player is NOT on your team, he will be forfeited. But we will go through and try to make sure that doesn't happen.

bmd times out at 11:09.

Slizz forfeits his pick at 11:39 or when bmd picks (forfeits) if he is timed out after that time.

We will keep using this forum until we can get waivers turned on and the season started. Then we will move back to teh baseball forum.

Thanks forgetting the draft done today.

I'm just going through dropping players. Twarpy is missing two players. Have only done a few teams thus far.

Dropped all prospects.

Twarpy is missing 2 players.
GL is missing 1 player.

Let us know who those players are as add/drops are turned off until we get waivers on.

Several teams need to go through and make their temas legal before Sunday's freeze.

Waivers will be turned on today (Friday). I had hoped to get things done and get them turned on Thursday, but this sitll works. All players will come off waivers at change of day Sunday morning. All players will then be free agents and may be picked up and used that day if done so before the freeze.

I found that Twarpy did not pick up Richmond and GL did not pick up Purcey. Made those pickups.

Twarpy msgs me that he was short a pick. I confirmed that after going through all picks. Not sure what was up with teh chart as it balanced.

Working now to get the waivers and order set up so we can get the season underway.
