This thread is for overall comments on the draft. You may use the questions below as a guide, or simply say what you want to say.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also encouraged to post comments.

Since we did not do a running rationale for this league, you can also feel free to put any specific rationales for any specific picks, or why you chose the draft position you did in this thread.

Please have some fun with this and feel free to add any other comments, predictions, praise, insults (not too mean), and anything else that will add to entertainment value of this conversation, and maybe even spark some rivalries or smack talk.

Since I asked for it I'd better get mine up early.

For what it’s worth, I was going to take the highest available draft position (which I knew wouldn’t be very high) considering how far down I was in the selection order.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I started off working from multiple different projection sheets (as many as four at one point), so my overall strategy was to take the best player available with an emphasis on position scarcity. I did pretty well except for one flub early on and a mini-meltdown when I realized I didn’t have any Pitchers yet. Taking three SP and a RP (Hanrahan was a queue pick that is slated to close for Washington) in rounds 7-10 wasn’t part of any “plan”, but I like who I got.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I was surprised to see Jimmy Rollins still available at 1.11 and Brandon Phillips at 4.06 Those two picks nailed down my MI starters. I also like Jed Lowrie at 18.06 (another MI!) because he has CI eligibility and will hit in a still-potent Red Sox lineup. My last two pickups, Nick Swisher 24.06 and Luke Scott 25.11 could be the biggest steals of the draft if they can shore up playing time.

Speaking of eligibility, the pick that had me yelling “Do-over! I still have my finger on the button! Do-over!” was Russell Martin 3.11 I alluded to it in the Draft Discussion thread when I posted about paying attention to ESPN vs. Yahoo!/Kafenatid eligibility. Yahoo! has Martin eligible at 3B but ESPN says he can only play C. I got him to cover for Axel Rod until he’s ready. Oops. The informed pick here would’ve been Chris Davis, as ducksofdeath so succinctly pointed out by taking him at 3.12

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like parts of different teams. I like airallnite’s SP and OF. Eserel is solid up the middle with Reyes, Uggla, and Polanco (who was in my queue for round 11.) Jeffaggy looks locked in everywhere except in the bullpen. I could watch dilligad’s team this year, too; Go Rangers!

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The number of managers that timed-out. I know life happens because I timed-out a few years ago when my pick came up on a day when I was traveling for work, but we had at least four time-outs, including a guy on the corner. I was beginning to think we would be on a one hour clock this week to get done.

The other thing that I was surprised about was how many of ya’ll were peeking at my queue during the middle rounds. All it took was for me to add a player and he would be gone within two picks. At one point I had a six player queue set up with nine picks until mine and all but one of them were gone when it got to me. And they represented a variety of positions, too.

I also saw a high number of picks that I thought were stretches. In the past I’ve drafted young players for their “big-upside/high potential,” but not to as great an extent as the league seemed to this year. (Yeah, I know I said I should’ve taken Chris Davis at 3.11, but that was different. ;p ) This year I tried to go with a slightly more veteran team with a few exceptions- Span 16.06, Lowrie 18.06, Purcey 23.11 and, to a lesser degree, Hanrahan 10.06

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I didn’t pick up any OF until Hunter Pence 5.11 and Mark DeRosa 6.06 which may have even been too high for him. Consequently I think I’ll see limited production from those positions that are traditionally SLG establishers. From the looks of things, SLG and its buddy RBI seem to be the offensive categories I’m going to be lacking in to start the season; I essentially ignored them without even realizing it until the draft was over. A count category like RBI is hard to make up ground in, too.

Teams to contend with this year will be Rev’s Redbirds and Toral’s Wheatfarmers. They both had consistent drafts and should get consistent production across the board- meaning I don’t see a truly “punted” category for either of them.

Play!

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I like to try to draft the 9-11 slots, helps cut down on any runs that might occur.

Every other year I have gone the traditional way get offense first and pitching second. In that I finished 2nd division of AA two of the last three years I figured why not change the strategy. I then chose my OF of Hart, Milledge, Werth, Spilboroghs for their balance in their speed, OBP and pop and they should not hurt me too much. This strategy did leave my infield with mid tier talent, but should be serviceable.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Hart decent slugger and speed, Greene-his stats were much better on the road than at Petco and should have decent pop. I like the Glaus pick-maybe earlier than I should have-should be back sometime in May and provides me slugging. Junior, IF he stays healthy should be able to produce one more solid year.

Still can’t believe I had Loney ahead of Konerko, of course I compounded that by taking Weeks the next round instead of Konerko.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

A quick look doesn’t show one team that may run away and hide. As is generally the case with these leagues it is not only the draft, but who has the quick finger on snatching the waiver wire pick-ups.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The amount of times the clock timed out-which means queues weren’t left or they simply not long enough. Also the fact that with the exception of three picks my designated pickers drafted my team (which may of kept me from getting second thoughts on a couple of picks)

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Pick up a 3rd top tier RP in the 5-7 round, and pick a 4th starter in either the 14/15/16 round

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan was to draft the most balanced team I could. With 16 teams in the league, I knew quality closers would be scarce. That's why I took Papelbon with a relatively early pick. I felt fortunate to get Valverde at pick 8.09. I didn't want to dominate any one category but wanted to be solid in all. I think I achieved that.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Posada at 16.09. If (and that's a big if) he modestly returns to prior production levels, he could be a steal there.

If I had looked to see what kind of spring Jon Rauch was having, I would have made a different pick at 22.09. I picked him as a handcuff to Chad Qualls - doesn't look like that's going to work.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

They all look pretty balanced. Loki's team looks real competitive.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

This was my first draft with Kafenatid/Rotoguru so I really didn't know what to expect. After a period of time, it seemed to make sense to leave a queue instead of timing out. That didn't seem to happen.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Nope - I'm pretty happy with the team I drafted. I just hope the injury bug doesn't hit.

1.What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned? I used what is generally considered the standard strategy for these drafts, that is concentrating on hitting initially, waiting until later in the draft for starting pitching, and until the end for relievers. I tried to pick the best player available, tempered by always trying to obtain speed. When possible I tried to stay away from older players. For better or worse I was able to stay with this strategy.

2.What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?I like my outfield for all hitting categories especially SBs. My favorite pick is Matsui who while not fast will have a bounce back year after recovering from his surgery. Durscherer had surgery soon after I drafted him, and thus would be my “do over.”

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)? I like Aman, Ducks and VP.

4. What surprised you most about the draft? I also was surprised by the number of time outs most of which could have been avoided by using queues.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently? I waited too long to pick starting pitchers, and my season could easily depend on how astutely I evaluated and picked third and fourth tier pitchers.
