I will explore trading Moustakous for a propsect pick here because I've got too many 3B. So if you get to your pick and think you'd like him instead, it should be easy enough for us to swap.

I'm available and still negotiating the first pick with a few
interested parties.

Big Papi is included in a couple of those deal negotiations.

Best come loaded for bear, as the ultra-hyped rights to
Strasberg won't come cheap.

I'm looking for a top notch hitting prospect who will not exceed
the prospect limits by the end of this year AND high mid round
pick(s) in the 2010 and/or 2011 supplemental drafts.

OK, I misread mjd's email yesterday.

I took it to mean he wouldn't be available today and he was going to take a ceratin unamed player. Apparently he is here afterall and is still OTC.

He is still OTC though and even if he trades the pick--the elapsed time until then is still his.

Depends on what he takes with the supplemental picks. Having two third-round picks is a pretty nice deal in 2010, and moving up 4 rounds in 2011 can also be nice.

When Ref eventually drops Strasburg, mjd can pick him up with his extra 5th round pick in 2011.

Yeah, lot to consider with that deal. I like my end of it for now, too. We shall see. Big thing to me was that Beckham is at least a year out and I already have Hanley at SS. Just hoping Stras can help me sooner rather than later. Slizz for instance, said he wouldn't even be taking Stras at #1. Hope it works out. My first trade of the season. Hope Papi continues to hit. Also hope that Stras isn't another Brien Taylor. Pitchers are so hard to figure out.

Funny thing is that I first saw Stras as a FA and made the issue which we adopted as a rule. I'm really glad as that loophole that CBS opened wasn't right. mjd said he had lots of offers.

I have Slizz's Q and most of his list is gone. I might have to fwd it to someone in a few though.

I kind of like the Beckham side of the deal or at least think its balanced. Strasburg for Beckham is even of course, but personally I prefer the hitter cause they seem more reliable and less injury prone. So then I take the value of Beckham prospect upgrade, and add on two draft picks for Ortiz that seems solid. I also think Ortiz is just about done.
33Slizz
      ID: 576421220

My ranking of the top prospects:

1) Mike Stanton - 39 HR's at 18 in his first year pro! Like Species said, at worst he's Adam Dunn in the MLB. Considering players like that are hard to come by in G24, he's a definite steal. Not to mention one heck of an athlete as he was scheduled to start at USC football!

Even the Red Sox offered Manny Ramirez straight up for him!!!

2) Aroldis Chapman - Lefty, just as fast/faster than Strasburg, and a wider array of pitches. Elite prospect.

3) Stephen Strasburg - I think this has been discussed on the board enough.

4) Carlos Santana - Great pick PD, this guy can flat out ball. OPS greater than 1.000 last season...wow!

***Huge Dropoff After this in terms of prospects***

5) Logan Morrison - Great player, but I don't think has the same fantasy upside as the players mentioned above. Of course I get stuck with him :/

6) Player TBA

7) Alcides Escobar - Great talent, awesome defense, one heck of a player...but his fantasy upside looks rather limited by his body of work in the minors. I don't see more than 30 SB's/season tops.

My queue (& email to ref...assuming strasburg went #1):

1 - Mike Stanton, OF, FLA

2 - Carlos Santana, C, CLE

3 - Logan Morrison, 1B, FLA

4 - Player TBD

5 - Aroldis Chapman, P, Cuba

6 - Trade/Email me**

**Take the first reasonable offer to move down in the 1st round. Just try for a reasonable upgrade in the supplemental draft. If no offer comes through, and I am forced to pick, take Alcides Escobar, SS, MIL

True, I did not get a prospect pick in return. But Tim Beckham is
a prospect, and he looks to fit in well with my other two
prospects. I now have a pitcher, an outfielder, and a shortstop,
all highly rated and under age 20.

Sure, in the short term Ref did well. He's suddenly in the mix
and if Ortiz continues his power output, it will help him. Hell, 2
months ago, I couldn't give Ortiz away. He was just rotting
away on my bench.

I'm committed to a major rebuild of my team. I'm not going
anywhere, anytime soon. Me or my team. However, I do have a
plan and plenty of time to implement it.

Re:28 I had discussions with 7 other managers which generated
over 35 emails. Some teams were eliminated because they did
not have a prospect I was interested in that would not surpass
the league imposed prospect limits by the end of the year, so I
would have had to burn a keeper slot to keep them or they did
not have or were unwilling to part with draft picks.

Also my research revealed some interesting facts:

• Since the draft began in 1965, 101 pitchers have been drafted
in the top five selections. Only 12 have won 100 games. (Josh
Beckett is closing in, with 94; check back in a few years with
Justin Verlander and David Price.) Of those 12, five finished with
losing records.

• Those 101 pitchers have combined for just 68 seasons of 15
or more wins -- on average, less than one per pitcher.

Also note that of players picked in the top 5 rounds, hitters
have produced much more star power. The pitchers have
produced just one borderline Hall of Famer (Kevin Brown), while
the 118 hitters drafted in the top five have produced four Hall
of Famers (Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Robin Young and Paul
Molitor), four likely future Hall of Famers (Ken Griffey Jr., Alex
Rodriguez, Barry Larkin and Chipper Jones) and two borderline
Hall of Famers (Dale Murphy, Mark Teixeira).

I even found and article that breaks down Strasberg's pitching
mechanics and interestingly enough, they compare very much to
Mark Prior's. They had slow motion video of both guys and
made frame by frame comparisons.

With the youth and future picks involved in this deal, it will be
several years before this trade can be honestly evaluated.

He has 94 ABs and doesn't have a starting job right now. So I figured even if he has 200 more ABs, he will still be under the threshold. He's had one game at C. Needs 4 more this year or 9 more to be eligible for next year there. It is a gamble, but with him not playing regularly now, I felt it was worth the risk.

#67: Yeah, for some reason I thought MBJ drafted him, but that might be in another league. His last name changed (it was Inoa a few months ago), but I didn't find him drafted under either name.

The guy just turned 17 and is already 6'7". If they can keep him from trashing his arm he might be a real diamond in the end.

Of course 17 in DR years might mean he's 20+ now! ;)

If Beane pays $4.25M for this guy, then he loves him. He wants to be in the majors in two years, but the As are going to take it much longer--as they probably should. 6'7" 210 lbs with great mechanics. Could be something special in a few years.

I had the same weird feeling seeing the Ynoa pick.....obviously he had been renounced or something because yeah I thought he had been picked previously as well.

Drabek will be interesting. Two plus pitches, but can he develop a 3rd major league pitch? I definitely would have taken Latos over him. That was a nice pick.

Fascinated by the Dee Gordon pick. He's lightning fast.....can't wait to see how he progresses out of A ball.

Thanks Species. I'm looking at it like this: He's gonna be up in 2, maybe 3 years...and by than Rollins will be slowing up and I can just transition him in.While he does not posses almost any power...I am hoping he can turn into Jose Reyes. XBH Machine with 60 SB potential, at SS!

From Baseball Prospectus - "It’s possible that no prospect excites me as much as Gordon has this year. He’s reeled off seven straight multi-hit games as part of an 11-game hitting streak, during which he has gone 22-for-45 to boost his season averages to .308/.372/.405, with his blinding speed adding eight triples and 40 stolen bases. The thing is, when you ask scouts about him, all they talk about is how incredibly raw he is. He’s getting this done on almost pure athleticism alone, and the gap between what he is now and what he can be is still massive. While it will require more research and discussion, I’m becoming convinced that he’s the top prospect in the Dodgers’ system right now.”

Thats not the real reason I picked him though. I just happened to be tuning into Baseball Tonight sometime around the draft and Peter Gammons listed his "Under-22 All-Star Team". He had Dee Gordon as his starting SS and than took some more time to praise him after talking about Strasburg in terms of top prospects...Since he was not on the Baseball America Top 50 mid-season prospects, I crossed my fingers and hoped he'd fall to the 2nd.

Only time will tell on this one.

WOW.......didn't see this coming:

Matt Latos-S- Padres Jul. 14 - 9:49 am et

The Padres are likely to call up pitching prospect Matthew Latos to start Sunday against the Rockies.

Latos was 3-0 with a 0.36 ERA for Single-A Fort Wayne before gaining promotion to Double-A San Antonio in late April. The fun hasn't stopped. In 9 starts (47 innings) at the Double-A level, the 21-year-old is 5-1 with a 1.91 ERA, 46 strikeouts and a .192 BAA. Some stats are just too good to ignore. Latos definitely seems like a guy worth keeping an eye on.

Slizz - Gordon was on my radar for sure and I like the pick. I'm more a Baseball America guy but the whole "raw" thing is echoed there as well. He needs work on defense, but you can't teach speed and he is amazingly fast.

I am using the same logic with my Eric Young Jr pick.....we can all afford to go without power in the middle infield in exchange for the steals. Young gets on base and is a 40-50+ SB threat. He's done very well in AAA. My risk is that he doesn't win the 2b job and has to move to CF......I really need him at 2b next year!

Young is in no way "worth" taking over many higher-ceiling players......but with my team on the mature side it makes sense to take players who are closer to helping you......like Ref tends to do.

Jaydog's pick of Drabek is a duplicate (already taken by BH in 15.18).

RE: Bowden form the draft thread...

My guess is that he was once a porspect and was renounced and the salary was not removed. If he's not listed as a prospect and every thing else about him is eligible to be drafted, then he can be drafted. There is no service time--which isn't surprising. That just mwans that he hasn't been on a roster at the freeze.

My bad. I am pretty sure I neglected to remove salaries from many of the renounced prospects. Thankfully we posted the prospects before the renouncements started so I can go back and fix it.

I count all 31 players picked. We need to go through and verify they are all legal.

I like the Eric Young pick. He's the kind of player who has value in this league, since he's an infielder who steals bases and is almost in the majors, but has very little actual value. He'll probably play for a couple years and help his G20 owner(s), but could be out of baseball quickly. If you're not going to get the top prospects, that's an excellent way to use the prospect draft.

As for Drabek vs. Latos, here was some of my (hokey) logic:

- Drabek might be kept as a prospect in March 2011. I'm pretty sure Latos will lose eligibility before then.
- Drabek is a feelgood story coming back from serious surgery. Granted, that makes him more of an injury risk but them's the breaks.
- Drabek is a Phillie, at least until we trade him for Roy Halladay.
- Drabek is the son of a Major Leaguer. More importantly, he is the son of a Major Leaguer I watched a lot and like.

Here are guys who are not in db and were not laled as so in the draft:

Gordon, ackley, tate, kelley

If there are others or there is a typo, etc., let me know asap so they can be protected with a salary.

Please go through all of your prospects and make sure there is a salary attached to them. Also, please check your former prospects and make sure those players have their salary removed (unless redrafted).

There are now 60 prospects in the rules. All prospects seem to be legal and the draft is over.
