I sent an email to all with draft guidelines. Please read it.

Kafenatid is having some difficulties with emails to Yahoo mail addresses. If you have one of those don't rely on it, check Kafenadid directly.

Let the picks begin

Looks like the draft is paused?

That's because I screwed up the pause times. I've asked Fred to fix it.

Ah. You can still run the draft. Also, many changes can be made through "Edit League Settings" and "Edit Draft Pause" pages.

sorry to end the draft prematurely last night. My sleep is WAY off from being sick. Last night I was up until 4 am. This evening I fell asleep by about 8:15 EST which is a good 45 mins or more before my pick was even up! And now I'm up in the middle of the night. Hopefully I can get back to sleep. hehe

at least tomorrow morning we can keep it rolling.

Also,

I've designated 3 pickers. All 3 of you have been pickers for me in past leagues for years upon years. Just give me fair time to make my own pick.

Thanks for using the queue Aaron. It is the key ingredient to a smooth flowing, enjoyable draft. As commish, I am everyone's designated picker.

Wow, I didn't realize a 'fair time to make my own pick' was less than 1 minute. Yes, I'm lodging a bit of a complaint. I'm not so certain that is who I wanted for that pick. I personally did not make it. I was not even given a chance to make it!!!!

Email to MikeV -
Complaint about the que. I have been checking the draft all morning long regularly. I checked and there was 1 person to pick before me. This was at 12:30. At 12:45 I jumped back and we're 3 picks past me with my pick being made immediately after dilligad's pick.

I have a post on the guru forums requesting a fair time to make my own pick for and I had come to the conclusion that Gallardo is not who I wanted. Please correct this. I'm still debating between 2 people but gallardo was not one of them.
---- (end email)

Dilligad's pick was made at 12:35. My pick was also made at 12:35. Can we please pause this a moment to fix this problem? Luckily neither of the 2 I'm considering have been picked. however one of the players picked was still very high on my list and not out of the question for me to consider.

You should turn off your queue's availability if there is any uncertainty about the pick.

Let t he pick stand as is. I didn't realize the other pitcher I was considering is already gone.

But the que avialability is 100% beside the point PD. Making an immediate pick right away without giving the manager in question a chance to review his own team first?

In a perfect world it shouldn't matter. But I can give a dozen examples of when a single pick can throw off a que plan. And when the manager in question has a specific request concerning his que to give him time to review it.

It was immediate. The email from kafenatid is registered in my hotmail as arriving AFTER the que pick was made.

I hope you get your change. However this "fair time to make a pick" idea is always a problem causer. What is a "fair time"? If you want 15 minutes, or 20 minutes, or 30 minutes it would be better to say so. Also it would be good if you would remind the commish every once in a while of your wait period request, because he's picking for 15 people and it's hard to remember the details of everybody's additional rules. And your other DPs should obviously be informed specifically by e-mail.

toral, the 3 people I have designed as pickers are simply people I trust. I've been in multiple leagues with them over the years (sometimes multiple leagues in the same years). I understand 'fair' is a bit ambiguous, however the people who I have chosen have demonstrated to me in the past that its not a problem. :)

On the flip side, I received an email from Mike V. The issue is resolved. Thanks Mike.

Glad to hear everything was cleared up. DPs you trust enuf that you don't need to be too specific/detailed is a good solution. But most queue pix are going to be made by the admin, I think.

Yeah, I can try and remember and usually don't check that quickly anyway - but as Toral pointed out I, for example, am in multiple drafts and am DP for lots of different people so its hard sometimes to keep everyone's individual situations straight.

Its nothing against Mike V, the request for him not to pick. It has to do with the positioning. His pick is right before or right after mine. Having the person right before/after picking que picks for you can just lead to issues.

Jeez, my queue just gets decimated every time through. Maybe I should just wait a bit before loading up more players. I didn't think Gallardo or Josh Johnson would be grabbed this early.

If you can find it in your hearts, let me just get round 11 out of the way now, too. Thanks and much appreciated.

Ok, so nobody wants to give into poor khahan's pathetic sob story and let me cheat. ;)

I must say, these last 2 picks have been absolutely agonizing for me. Right at the point where I can take my team in so many different directions. And I know which ever direction I choose will probably shut me out from 3 others as those players I'd like are being picked before it comes back around to me.

I will no longer have a queue for the rest of the draft, you will have to wait for me to pick because of this. sorry but I can't handle mistakes like this.

Because the Guru didn't want one. If I remember correctly, it requires a little more managing plus with a 16 team league it would have a significant impact on the usable FA pool

No stashing hurt guys I guess. Forces you to decide if you want the guy to take up a spot.

But on the other hand, I've always felt that it penalizes you for bad luck of having a few guys get hurt. You are screwed if its somebody important.

We may finish before Spring Training ends. I have entered all selected players in Yahoo so you can check under 'Draft Central', 'Draft Results' to confirm that I've entered everything properly. There are 2 'placeholders' for players selected that Yahoo has never heard of. GO has Brad Nelson for Ike Davis and s_R has Jason Smith for Jenrry Mejia. Your rights to those players drafted will last as long as you keep the placeholders on your roster.

Please check the rosters as it is much easier to make corrections now before I release the draft.

Those who have been in leagues with me before know my philosophy on evaluating and veto'ing trades - power to the managers involved and those not involved just aren't involved.

But I can't help but ask about the current trade - in a non-keeper league how is a trade involving a guy that got demoted to the minors and not even currently active balanced or helping both teams?

Khahan, I was surprised that yours was the only comment. It's probably because there are no 'significant' players involved. I have to think that the Mets have given up but I don't see that GO helped himself that much.

Regardless, trades are judged by league vote, and it was not rejected.

Considering the lack of activity I'm actually not surprised mine was the only comment. And I don't have a problem with the trade going thru, however if this one had been rejected I would be content as well.

I saw it but typically, like Khahan, I give wide latitude to the managers. So long as the trade isn't completely stupid (Pujols for Moyer, for instance), or there isn't evidence of collusion, I don't think it is a problem.

In a non-keeper league I'm even less likely to complain, frankly.

There are some comments on Yahoo about the current trade between GO and myself. Additional comments welcome.

Posted my thoughts. Been in leagues with both PD and GO for probably close to 10 years now. Neither one of those managers are going to give up or throw a league. So what makes anybody think that either of those manangers are not acting in their own best interest?

I can only conclude that both PD and GO feel they are helping their teams with this trade or else they would not have agreed to it.

FYI for anyone lurking... the trade is CC Sabathia for Carlos Santana.

PD is giving up CC, he has several good SP and a major hole at catcher, and in general across the power hitting categories.
He is also considerably over his IP limit.

GO has 3 good catchers and is short on SP, and way under his IP.

If it were Brian McCann for CC nobody would have said a thing.
PD is just betting that Carlos will produce even beter than i.e. Brian McCann the rest of the season.
I for one agree Carlos is a Top 5 catcher from here on out, and thats at a thin position. We can find a dozen SP with comprable numbers to CC.

Normally, I steer clear of kibitzing on other leagues. But GO asked me to weigh in here. So without being fully aware of all the contextual issues, I'll toss in a few observations.

1. Draft context
In the RIBC leagues, Sabathia was a mid-second round choice on average, and drafted somewhere in the second round in all five leagues. The only catcher drafted higher was Mauer (late first round); other highly ranked catchers were Victor Martinez (mid-3rd), McCann (mid-4th), and Matt Wieters (mid-6th).

However, Sabathia was also generally the third pitcher drafted, behind only Lincecum and Halladay. Based on YTD stats, he currently ranks 36th among all pitchers in the ESPN player rater. In another rating system that I use, he ranks 23rd (all 23 are starters). So he is clearly not living up to his preseason outlook. In the draft, the 23rd starting pitcher was drafted in the mid-7th round on average.

2. Santana has no prior MLB experience, which adds an element of speculation. There is plenty of hype, however, and the early results are certainly impressive. Will he finish the season as a top-5 catcher? Who knows? But it's not a laughable proposition.

Based on the league context in GO's post 97, a case can be made that both teams could expect to benefit from this trade.

If a new draft were held today, would Sabathia still be drafted ahead of Santana? Probably - but not definitively. Power hitting catchers are a scarce commodity, and in spite of a lack of relevant ML experience, Santana would no doubt command a premium draft position among catchers.

So - while my preliminary reaction was that the trade was a stretch, a fuller analysis suggests that it is plausible that the trade can help both teams, and that there is no reason to suggest that either manager is acting against the interests of his own team.

Thanks for the analysis Guru. Very thorough. I believe you are right on your last point too. If we had a draft today - CC would go in say the 3rd or 4th... and Santana would go a round or two afterwards. Then when you add in the needs of the teams currently, it makes even more sense.

PD In my opinion you make some strange trades my friend. This one isn't any worse than the one in basketball.
Personally I have more problems with Podzelanik, Putz and F Rod for Broxton and Santana but in a AA league I don't believe in kibitzing trades to the point of veto unless they are way way off like a 2cd rounder for a one category 7th rounder.

GO, please quit sending me trades and rude comments, there is no place for them in this league. I will not deal with you, I will not "put my money where my mouth is." I didn't like your trade, deal with it.

Sorry Guru, GO is making RIBC a terrible experience for me, I didn't like his trade so I get 2 taunting trades asking me to put my money where my mouth is because I didn't like his santana trade. I just dont think these kinda comments are welcoming in a friendly league like this.

not sure if I'll play RIBC next year because of him.

I sent CC for Carpenter with no comments. Which he wrote back was wasting his time. I felt that was a bit insulting to me cause I thought it was a fair offer. Especially since we know how good he thinks CC is. So its a 2 way street.

I then sent back CC for the Lester with the comment that i was just giving him a chance to put his money where his mouth was on how great CC was. He posts that CC will win 20 games and have 200K's this season so he shouldn't be traded for Santana.... but if he thinks he is gonna win 20 games and 200K's -- why is my offer so ridiculous for Lester or Carpenter? Are they gonna win 25 and and have 250K's or am I missing something?

I guess I would rather have people active and making trades then what I have been going through with me sending trade offers out there have having them sit for 10 days. This has happened with 3 teams.

Alright, well after acquiring a couple pitchers hopefully I can make up my 100+ innings deficit and rise back up the standings... but damn it Pedroia and a league with no DL spots.

Guys my team is in Also Ran status- I do not believe that also rans should decide a league championship therefore I will only make trades with a contender that I feel (and I believe a consensus of the other managers will feel) benefit me substantially more than they benefit the contender. I will still make even trades with those in my own status class and with those teams hanging around the middle of the pack- I just don't want to unfairly influence the league title.

How far out of it are you? Cause isn't there motivation to finish top 5 or top 7 or something where you still might get bumped up to AA next year? I'm never really sure how this all works.

That said - you should be making any trade you think will help you move up the standings regardless of where you are. If people at the bottom are just playing out the string and not trying to improve - i feel that is worse because others are picking up free points and passing them because of it.

I forgot how frustrating the trading game can be. Seriously, I have at trade out to a manager that is about to expire. There have been no emails. Its been neither accepted or declined, just simply ignored. And this manager has been active. Kind of rude.

Also, a little note doesn't hurt if somebody is rejecting a trade. It lets the initiator know if there something to follow up or just no interest at all.

I had 2 expire from a couple weeks ago.

Got a useful rejection yesterday saying they weren't looking for starting pitching. I can work with that. FYI - I am looking for a closer.

I'm looking to move a SP for an OF. Willing to package one of my starters from Sea + Evan Meek for a a similarly performing OF.

Going to take a major rbi guy in the of to get me to move one of my better pitchers.

Wow, I was wondering how long my patchwork team could hold it together. For so long I've been bouncing between 95 and 103 points I felt I had a legit chance at cracking the top 3.

Now the past week has been nothing but a free fall for me. I'm at the lowest point I've been in probably 3 months and the end is coming fast. Getting tougher to bounce back.

I'm due to gain some points since I'm still way behind on IP... not sure how many that will be though.
