The draft thread is now open. We will use this thread throughout the draft.
Please do not mention players who are eligible to be drafted.
Please only post draft picks in the draft thread and all other comments here. If there is a traded draft pick, a commish will post that in the draft thread as a way to update the posted draft chart.
If you wish to trade a draft pick, it is still necessary to have a commish approve your trade, but it is not necessary to propose/accept on CBS site during the draft--though you are still welcome to do that. All trades need confirmation so we can be sure terms are understood and aggreeable (email to all commishs is fine as well). If a commish is not around and you are sure the trade will go through, you can ask that manager to pick for you and that pick will be traded once approved.
The commishs will be closely monitoring the pace of the draft and if need be will adjust clocks accordingly. The c clock will be posted here approx. every round.

Reminders:
1 - Please pick up your players on the CBS Website immediately after your pick!
2 - Please email the next THREE teams that are up in the draft. You can do this via CBS, or just set up their names in your email account of choice, since they will be the same a lot of the time.
Thanks.

With Johnson, the only issue is injuries and playing time. If he plays, he's a lock for a .400 OBP and moderate power. Unlike Konerko or Cantu who might play and be ineffective. Finally have a decent first baseman - much better than the scrubs I had last year.
I had four of the first 23 picks and got Johnson, Gonzalez, Sizemore, and Dotel. Along with McLouth, those were all my primary targets. So I'm pretty happy right now.

I've got Slizz's pick at 2.10.
1 pick in the first 3 rounds in brutal, but the choice I made to get Billingsley. And the one pick I took an injured guy in Webb. Definitely put myself behind the 8 ball! I really struggle in this league sometimes. I can't quite put my finger on it. I think its just difficult to turn your team around and I find myself taking more chances because of it.

The hardest thing about this league is the actual talent level of players available. EVERY player has warts of some sort. There's not a single sure thing in the entire first round, except maybe Kubel, Dempster, or Ibanez but most of their value is tied to knowing what you get rather than a high ceiling.

It's giving me second thoughts on McLouth with blue hen constantly hyping him... But he is an OF, and bh has a decent track record for stockpiling quality outfielders in this league.
This'll be the first time Vlad's been on someone's roster but mine. He was my original first round draft pick. And, speaking of over-the-hill DH's, Ortiz is back on my roster. I had him and dropped him the year he blew up. (not that I'm bitter about dropping him 6 years later or whatever it is..)
76
mjd Leader
ID: 501381415 Wed, Mar 24, 2010, 18:05
I was thisclose to keeping McLouth, but 2 other OF keepers, an OF prospect in waiting, and a last minute trade for a keeper SP, prevented that from happening.
I was wondering when Ortiz would be drafted this year after insisting Ref take him in the Strasburg deal.
BTW, I believe that he's 1B eligible, also.
77

ID: 539581218 Wed, Mar 24, 2010, 18:26
Ortiz is not eligible at 1B. I was considering reaching on Glaus, but R9 made that moot. In fact might not be much of a reach because I think he's better than what some of these pundits predict.
Btw, mjd, I hope you're feeling better. That email I got from your wife had me in tears laughing so hard. Tell her thanks for that! Man, I'm cracking up again just thinking about it. I think maybe she should get a team when we get an opening.

Cat update --
They called a hour in to the surgery and wanted to quit. Tumor was twice as big as the ultrasound showed and surrounding all the important liver area tubes (arteries, veins, ducts). I said "no" and he is now in the recovery room purring away. It is still very early and things could change quickly, but the vet is guardedly hopeful. He has his own private nurse! He is one stubborn and persistent cat so I am ever so hopeful. He won't live a couple more years but I will take a coupla months. He is very special. I saw him tonight and he is very weak but indeed purring. Every hour he lives is a good sign. If he makes it to tomorrow morning, that is good as well.

I checked several teams, but I've been so pushed for time lately, I simply didn't have the time to go through every roster to be sure the CBS and keeper thread matched. I stressed this importance. Guess I'll have to from now on as it always seems to happen.

Pace update:
We're about a half round behind where we were last year at this time. We are still ok at this point. Historically we do the best on Thursdays so I'm hopeful (though Fri and Sat are our worst). Usually we get finished on the Thurs before the Sunday opening game and even though current projections have us finishing next Friday, we are still fine to get waivers turned on in time to pick up players before that first game--even though I think there is only one or two games that day.
I've got some interest in trading up here if anyone wants to move down.

I really like what Darkside is doing here. He had decent keepers, and with LaPorta and Wood ready to step in, he did a great job of plugging in the holes with Kendrick and now Sean Rodriguez. Nice work.

I'm just going to lay this out there, knowing there is no real solution.
I never received an email that I was up, and I come back to the thread to find that the manager who didn't email me took the guy at the top of my queue after I unknowingly timed out.
Frankly, it is unfair for a manager to benefit from not emailing the next manager that he is up.
Now, I'm fine with Getz. I was planning on snagging another SP this round and looking toward Getz in another round (or two, if he was still on the board). And, should he be thrown back in the pool, it is extremely unlike Getz will be around next round now that I've highlighted him.
I understand I need to check in here. But there really should be a penalty on a manager not emailing ahead.

That was me. It's hard to gather all the emails when I'm on the blackberry. But that's beside the point.
R9 picked at 11:47 PM ET last night. At the absolute worst, PD would be on the clock at exactly 10:47 this morning. I can understand going to be early. I can also understand getting up late. But both? You really went 11 hours without thinking to check your team when you knew you were on deck?
I try to be quiet about people holding up drafts because I tend to cause trouble. But if you think for one second you shouldn't have been skipped, I take issue with that.

What part of this wasn't clear: "I understand I need to check in here." Yeah, real life sucks sometimes. But you have a responsibility yourself to email the next few managers. You didn't.
Here's a clue, BH: Use email to tell the next guy he's up. If you can't leave a note on the board.
As I told ref in an email, I'm not going to make a hairy deal out of this. But managers who don't email should be penalized. By not emailing me, this draft was held up the entire time until I timed out, which is an inconvenience to all the managers.
I've paid my penalty for not checking in. Where are the penalties for the non-emailing managers who slow the draft down?

FWIW, I've always viewed emailing the next 3 not as a requirement, but more of a friendly/helpful thing.
I would be vehemently opposed to penalizing people for not doing it. With trades it's not always the same 3 people and it's a serious disincentive for someone taking a queue.

I think the fault for PD missing his pick is 95% on PD. We all know we are supposed to monitor the thread, and especially if he had an on-deck email 11 hours earlier, he gets no sympathy from me.
I think the fault for the morning slowdown of the draft is 95% on blue hen. I consider the purpose of emailing the next pickers is primarily to keep the draft moving as fast as possible, and not to keep the next picker from getting skipped. As a penalty, in a case like this, I'd assess an extra 3 hours to blue hen's clock.
Usually, a failure to notify just results in a modest slowdown. But a slowdown impacts everyone, not just the next pickers.
It would be even better if we had a more automated draft mechanism. The current process is a pain.

That's fair. I'll accept a clock penalty, although that's unlikely to hurt me much.
For the record, I do keep the draft moving by text message. As Pete, Great One, and BMD can attest (and others like Tree, Barilko, and JKaye), I am quick to let someone know via text when they are up.
I may know a thing or two about automated draft mechanisms. Give me some time to think about that...

I'm sorry I haven't been more available. Need to get the time clock updated too. Luckily, my pick hasn't come up today or I would havecome in long enough to pick anyone of need w/o really even researching. In fact, I haven't done much researching at all for this draft. Usually, I can get a feel of who I want as it gets clsoer to me, but I haven't been here much.
As far as emailing and our entire process, the prevailing sentiment is mine as well. I'd lvoe an automated drafting email sent. Problem is that CBS and Kaf only do the guy OTC and history has shown us that it doesn't seed things up nearly as much as getting the 3 emails in a row. Many work on their computers but aren't on the site and when the email pops up, they are able to start getting their stuff together. I really didn't have the time to investigate Kaf and set things up there. I could have if I had planned enough ahead I suppose.
Not getting emails is aggravating. I've been directly behind someone who never emailed me once an entire draft. It stinks when you are available but don't know you are up. Thankfully if that happens and you get emials from the previous two guys you know you should check in.
As far as PD goes, he got the "on-deck" email. Certainly should have checked in before 11 hours or whatever it was. if bh could have just posted or asked someone else for an assit that would have helped. When I'm around things tend to go faster, probably because if somene hasn't picked, I'll email them again just in case. That wouldn't hurt for us to do that as a group.
Queues: Please make sure the person you are sending a q to, can make it. If you're stuck and you ahve to go, then send it, but don't get mad if those people can't make your pick for you. If the DP can fwd it to someone else if they see it and can't do it--that helps.
Remember this cumulative clock and aggressive per pick clock is set up so we can get as much information as we can in preseason ball so we can make our picks. In these deep leagues, a mistake at the top of the draft/Keepers could be costly. But it's a long season and normally we can somewhat overcome bad decisions/injuries. Late picks can REALLY help us.
As far as pace goes, it seems like we are way behind schedule. I'll try and get the chart caught up and run some numbers but it's possible that we may have to cut down on clocks sometime next week. That is not something I want to do at all. Sunday is typically our 2nd best day so I guess we will see where we're at come Monday. Problem is that most people pick quicker than say 2 hours, but there are enough picks made between 2 and 3 hours that I want to allow people to have that "Oh Snap" moment if the draft hits them quicker than expected and they can't get to a computer. Also hate to reduce c clock. At least if we are forced to do that--it would only impact the later rounds. I'm still optimistic we will gets some picks in. I'll try and figure up a q for my picks tomorrow morning/early afternoon.

re: email notifications
Frankly, as small a thing as it is to send an email after drafting, sometimes it's all one can do to get a pick in, let alone drop an email. For me, this is usually only a problem when I'm at work and running to a meeting or whatnot, but it's happened twice this draft already where the reality is that getting the pick posted is all I was able to manage.
And like R9 mentioned, often enough times the next guy has already posted before I've gotten a chance to sent the email, so that obviates the situation.
Not a fan of this talk of penalties and whatnot. We've got the cumulative clock. Let it do its thing, or adjust it accordingly.

Stuff happens at times and there are instances where you get stuck and you can't pick in a timely manner or can't email the next 3. But that should be the exception and not the rule. Teh c clock is a major pain too, but it helps prevent the same manager(s) from consistently slowing down the draft. It's all about helping your fellow manager's our and making this draft as painless as possible. Updating the c chart, I noticed that PD didn't pick for over 12 hours after he was notified that he was on deck. Now, obviously that takes up the dark period as well, but still.
By and large, we all work extremely well together and help each other out and that is really appreciated.

Q: about actually playing the game.
For CBS do we need to have a complete lineup (like G24) or all that day's stats are ignored?
Can we have guy on the DL in the starting lineup slot? What about an NA guy we are keeping?
I calculate 9 keepers plus 14 rounds with 20 managers to be 460 players (23 x 20)? We're in the dregs stage in AAA with 360 picked. Some of the guys I've looked at I have NEVER heard of. My starters certainly will need to stay healthy all year!
144
R9
ID: 362452117 Fri, Mar 26, 2010, 21:56
We have a very large bench though, so alot of the bench guys can be longshot/platoon types/prospects.
Not sure of the exact rule, but we do need to have a complete lineup of active players. A DL or NA guy isn't supposed to be starting. No one will hang you for having a DL guy plugged in for a couple days because you weren't able to swap him out right away, but regularly starting NA/DL guys in an attempt to tank is not allowed.

Hate to tell you this, but 460 is not right. Yeh, 23x20 = 460 but, 3x20 = 60 (prospects) So, more like 520.

What, R9 said.
To take it a step further, if a guy is day to day and you decide to take a chance and leave him in your lineup, that's one thing, but if he's on the DL, he needs to be replaced. If it's for a position who you do'nt have a backup for like a C or SS, etc. then you will have to drop someone and pickup a guy to make your lineup legal.
We have set it up to flag you if you don't have the optimal lineup in, but if you choose to start less pitchers because you are playing matchups that day--then that's fine--but you'd still need to have enough healthy Ps to be active on a day to day basis. You also may have holes at times due to off days and changing multi-positions players around for whatever reason. You will not automatically get a 0 for the day for a flagged lineup (since it still may be legal) but we have the ability to go in and bench all players for an illegal lineup (has never happened). The main gripe for me about CBS is the allowance to have 2 DHs or 2 3B etc. That happens at times as we switch plaeyrs around, but so far we've been able to go in and switch them w/o an illegal lineup. My suggestion is that if you get a yellow flag saying your lineup is illegal, double check it!!!
Also, add to that 460 players we add up to 60 more in prospects so we're really thin, but it's amazing how many gems can be found on the WW at times.

151: I menat to make the comment yesterday that it's incredible how well guys like YoungRoman (Austria) and Tosh and Species (PT) do on clocks. YR is like 6 hours ahead of us and PT guys are 3 hours behind the draft. That's 5 am in the morning when they go OTC.
I looked for about 10 mins last night and the only two names I pulled up that I thought were interesting for this pick was Gomez and Duch. Didn't have the time to really research, so when Tosh emailed me the list who was left with a couple picks before me, I gave him Gomez. I was actually kinda hoping he'd be taken. Just hoping he can get on base more this year and seems to be having a good Spring. May have been a little reach. Funny that R9 took Duch right behind me. I doubt if Gomez made it back to me though. Duch could be an absolute steal. Gomez is a lot higher risk, but could be a good pick too. So many OF. I'll be following these two and see how I did.

In a league with Fielding % my strategy was to draft as many guys that played 1B as possible because every time they catch a throw from a SS,2B etc its considered a "chance" and they get high % because of it. And then in other spots I got guys that really play DH cause they never make errors.

Here's who BMD got for me: Ianetta, Teixeira, KJohnson, Sandoval, Alexei, Granderson, Swisher, Rasmus, Fukudome, Bradley and Greinke, Cueto, Bailey, KRod, Marmol, MGonzalez, CPerez, Wood, Lohse. I told BMD to get closers and Sandoval could be decent in this format if he winds up playing a lot of 1B. And it's a 20 team league so I think that's a decent job of getting good players.

I'm looking to deal Erik Bedard. I know I just drafted him three minutes ago, but I am definitely looking to compete this year and think he could be an important chip in a trade with a team that's Twarpying. You don't have to make the offer now; just keep it in mind in May when you're in last place and he's close to returning.

Looks like I left someone's tiem off the top section.
Pretty good run tonight has gotten our projected finish back to Friday evening. Still have work to do on the site and remove prospects from all the teams etc. after the draft before we can get waivers turned on. I'm hopeful we can move quicker this week though. As of now, I don't anticipate shortening the clocks.

First, I am sure he's up because of his job. If you know who he's wants can you draft him? If you time out, he might not want to trade for the pick anyhow, esp. sinceeveryone is very aware when someone's time is up and usually a bunch of picks come off the board quickly when that happens.

It's all good. He responded, and the extra 5 spots negated the trade. I was trying to land Bedard, Bautista, and Cust with my 3 picks, so when Cust went, I was willing to go later. But the differences weren't THAT great, and Norris was the last SP on my list, so it works out.
I know that was in a prime part of the day - I'll try to make up for it by posting, taking queues, etc, especially after I get home tomorrow night.

Draft update:
We didn't gain anything today, but we didn't lsoe any ground either. We hit our draft average. It's still behind our normal pace.
In the top section of the chart, you'll notice the time left column. If your time is under 6 hrs it fills dark blue and if your time is under 3 hrs it fills red. Anyone who has less than 3 hrs left will time out if that clock runs out. In other words, they no longer have a 3 hour per pick clock. If you draft behind someone in that situation, you go OTC when that runs out. Same deal with anyone else who runs out of clock.

Draft Update: Even though we had a couple who timed out, we had our best day today. Our projected finish is now Friday afternoon.
We are still behind our usual pace and that brings with it a few managers who have less than 6 hrs of clock left and a couple who have less than 3 hrs. Again, it is up to each manager to know when a person times out of his cumulative clock. For instance, GO is OTC right now and times out at 9:36 am ET.

judy - I have been remiss in expressing my joy to hear of the improvement in your cat. Congrats!
I have interest in trading for a closer and possibly a starting pitcher. I have prospects and picks mainly to trade. The closer should be relatively settled in the position: i.e. no Madsons, Lindstroms or Rauches of the world (no insult intended to the owners of those players). The starter I am interested in will have decent ratios and good strikeouts. These players do not need to have any keeper value.

On days where there are no day games, you can check the lineups for the whole set of 7 P.M. eastern games about half an hour before game time at either Yahoo! or mlb.com -- probably other places as well. Sometimes they're up an hour or more ahead so you can check the 8 P.M. lineups before the roster freeze as well.

1st game of the day, and it's always been like that. the Calendar on the League Home page lists, right now, the lock times for Sunday's and Monday's games.
Thanks Toral. now I remember. thats also the reason why it is better to draft guys that play everyday because you rarely know in advance when someone is sitting.
Judy - the blue/gray thing is from your browser and indicates if you recently clicked that link.
the little icon next to a pitchers opponent is a baseball which means he is the projected starter for that game. there isn't a similar icon for the batters, because CBS isn't listing starters when they are available, like Yahoo does.

Yeah, 5 minutes before the first game everyone locks. Really ruins strategy of playing matchups and screws anyone with west coast players.

And if you move SPs in and out of the lineup once in a while you'll forget there's a day game and go to the site and find that Sandy Koufax is sitting on the bench....

I've been away wince I posted last and just getting back to a computer.
RE: CBS site and lineups. It used to be we had to have things set 30 mins before the first game of the day on Noon ET whichever was earlier. I need to re-read the rules myself. I thought they switched it to 5 mins before the first game of the day last year but didn't go far enough. I hate that about CBS and also hate you have to click both on active/resrve as well as hit another dropdown for a position. I also hate that it will actually allow you to have an illegal lineup (two 3b). At least it will giv eyou a flag and I've tried to use this to our advantage since it's the way they have it.
13.16 pick is skipped. I have a ton of emails so I"m gonna go check and see if someone has sent me a q for 13.17 and if not make sure I email whoever that is to pick just in case.

Castro is pretty well known and has a great name. I'd be surprised if anyone in this league hadn't heard about him. That said, I don't think he will be much of a contributor this year.

Rolling along. Let's try to knock this off today. Easter weekend is coming up, and I'll be in Denver for a conference almost all next week, so even a little bit of time to play around with the roster would be good.

I did not and he has been CCing me every time whether I have been around or not. I emailed him at his work as well but my inclination is to skip him as he asked. As long as he makes it up before the last pick is made, he is all good. Sounds like he is not at work anyhow today.
So we will skip him as he requested.

As we come to the end of the draft, can everyone please take another look at your team and make sure all your drafted players have been added to your teams. There is a possibility that you could lose a player if he's not placed on that team. I will go through teams and glance at them as I remove your prospects, but it is not my responsibility to make sure you have your players on your team. At times, teams are short of 23 players because they didn't have enough draft picks or traded some away, etc. Also don't want to have to look through the entire draft to try and find which player you forgot to add.

GO TImes out at 3:56 PM.
R9 did send him an email to let him know he is up.
Looks like we could even finish tonight. If so, depending on what time we get done, there is a chance that I could get all the stuff done in order to get waivers turned on tonight--but my guess is tomorrow. Waivers last for one full day plus the remaining time for the day they go on waivers. So it doesn't matter what time I put them on waivers today, they would run Sat morning. Tomorrow and they would run Sunday morning and so on.

Was trying to figure out who is skipped and who isn't, this is what I came up with. I am unsure of bmd and Species' status for picks 4.12 and 4.17:
4.07 bmd 4.08 Toral 4.09 (Skipped) 4.10 R9 4.11 Judy 4.12 bmd (does he need this pick? Ref's grid has him at 13 of 14 already) 4.13 Jaydog 4.14 Youngroman 4.15 R9 4.16 Pete 4.17 Species (does he need this pick?) 4.18 Ref 4.19 R9 4.20 Pete

GO owns 14.17. He has already made 14 picks but he's allowed to make the extra pick as he traded away one of his current players. But he has timed out so the pick is skipped and he will be able to make it up within 3 hrs of 14.16 is made or the final pick of the draft--whichever is later. As for 4.12, I'd have to investigate it, but it seems like he won't need it if my chart is accurate. Since GO traded for an extra pick, that seems to balance things out and would mean 4.12 will be skipped.
Looking at bmd's roster (after he picks up Lohse) he still needs 14.12, so:
4.12 bmd 4.13 Jaydog 4.14 Youngroman 4.15 R9 4.16 Pete 4.17 Great One 4.18 Ref 4.19 R9 4.20 Pete

The draft time is finished. R9 is autoskipped for pick 14.20 because he missed an earlier pick. By rule he has until 1:42 to make both of his picks or he will forfeit them. The draft will conclude at that time or at which time he makes both of his picks. I will email him again.

This draft is over but please continue to post in this thread until I can get the site ready and clear prospects, etc. As I said before, please make sure your roster is correct and no one has been left off from the draft. I will start by clearing prospects. Then I will ready the site for the season. I have to turn on waivers before I can edit the waiver order. I don't think there are a lot of settings in this sport for me to change so it shouldn't take long assuming there are no surprises.

Great draft guys. I had a lot of early picks this year and really feel like my team is in good shape. Sure, I don't have Javy Vazquez, Adam Jones, Jose Valverde, or Asdrubal Cabrera, but I do have a lot of superstars who should really push me up the standings this year.
