Rangers got a nice little start from CJ but they blew it in the 9th. This is going to be a long season as a Rangers fan.
Washington might not have a job come Mothers Day.

So much for any dominance by anyone, so far. Right now, only 3 teams over 100 points with more than half the league within striking distance.

And now I am in last place for OBP -- below .300 (OK only .299). I need some tutoring in this for 2011...
My Phillies are awesome, but I am concerned for J Roll's calf and Werth's hip...JRoll has been off to a tremendous start! Castro and Francisco are not on par with these guys. Polanco has been awesome as well! I liked him when he was with us before.

Halladay is gonna have a great season. Out of the AL east, and the 9th hitter is the pitcher. He did very well with the DH and against the Sox and the Yanks.

as a jays fan ive been watching halladay for years, he can get anyone out, a QS for him should have to be 8 innings and 2 runs or less against haha. gonna see alot of stat lines like that this year.

Yeah. I've been a Jays fan since 1977, and Halladay is my favourite Jay pitcher (just over Stieb). I always liked him, even when he had the 11+ ERA. He had a beautiful motion then...actually, it's not as classic now. He started to bend his upper body down as he delivers when Mel Queen tought him the new pitches.

the Phillies BATTERS (We cannot call them HITTERS at this point...) are in a deep slump. The pitching has actually been pretty good. Jamie was good today. Good think Maybin made that error yesterday or Halladay might still be pitching!
Werth is especially lost right now. but do you sit him? And of course we play the red hotlanta folks for the next three days. I sure hope these losses do not hurt us in the end...

I still cannot believe how far the Phillies have fallen. Their SP/RP have done a great job, but the offense which should not be a problem... is. We really need J ROll back. OF course, except for yesterday's game, the opponents have not scored much either -- 7 total for 2 teams Phils/Fish.
I did hear a rumor that CHuck blew up at them today. They are off Thursday -- we shall see what the homestand brings -- besides the SD team, best in the west!

Nice job by coldwater to join the party. Going to by tough to hold him off now that Strausburg is activated.
The pending arrival of Strausburg was the main reason I chose Capps over Bailey in the Ian Stewart trade.

A lot of baseball yet to be played.
The thing that impresses me about coldwater's rise is that it's not like my team is in a major slump. I'm at my highest point total of the year. He's just had a remarkable run the last 2 weeks.
Losing Morales certainly hurts me and having my 2 best K/9 guys go on the DL has not helped my cobbled together pitching staff either.

Wow, nice job getting even with me in such a short period of time. Not like I went into a major slump, you just caught up.
Trade was made just about a month ago. I needed a closer and had my choice of Bailey or Capps for Ian Stewart. At that date, Capps lead the league in saves, and still does. Bailey had only 3 save chamces at the time, but had yet to allow an earned run.
My concern was Bailey's lack of chances. I knew that Capps would probably hurt my percentages some, but would continue to get save opportunities, especially with the arrival of Strausburg and the fact that he would be on a pretty strict pitch count, hopefully giving additional chances for Capps. Unable to decide, I flipped a coin and it came up Capps.
Interestingly enough, their stats from that point on are pretty much the same.
I flipped that same coin as whether to start Ian Kennedy at home against the hot hitting Braves the other night. Kennedy did not get the W, but he held the Braves to 0 runs in 7 innings and I missed out on his excellent percentages and some Ks that I surely could have used.
Long way to go yet, but it certainly will be interesting.... and fun. Not much fun when one team runs away and hides. So come on you guys at the next level. Join the party and may the best team win.

Interestingly enough, their stats from that point on are pretty much the same. Actually, since the trade, Capps has a 5.74 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 10 saves. Bailey has a 2.70 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 9 saves. Stewart has been equally bad as Capps though.

Yeah, I guess that I was assuming the damages to my percentages when I said that, but their S, BS, and BS/L are about the same. Give or take.

My team has moved well the past 6 weeks....from 13th in late April to 2nd the past few days (after several weeks in the third place switcharoo with Judy whoose team does 8 point yo-yo moves every few days). I've enjoyed some 4-6 point jumps between weeks of stagnation. My run up the standings results from batters finally heating up and overcoming repeated SP blow ups (most recent being Hanson's last start, 0 K's, 1 BB, 13 hits and 9 ER in 3.2 innings..that would be a 22.09 ERA and a 3.82 WHIP)
I am surprised at lack of comment about recent trade with Rangers_Homer to obtain Josh Johnson giving up Victor Martinez and Billy Wagner..my only closer. I'm punting saves in the hopes I can improve my 7th and 4th league worst ERA / WHIP respectively. To survive loss of Martinez's offense, I need Carlos Santana to come thru like Strasburg has for Cold water.
Speaking of Coldwater, at draft's conclusion I predicted Coldwater as runaway league champ. He had shadowed mjd all season before catching on fire concurrent with Washington activating Strasburg. IMHO...if mjd's spectacular early offense returns (now 38 RBI's ahead of league), mjd has enough pitching (especially when De La Rosa returns) to get in a horse race with Coldwater.
Nerf..good luck on finding that MI. Before Martinez trade, I spent several weeks trying to pry a decent MI loose w/o any luck. I couldn't even generate a conversation.

Available decent MI are a rare comodity right now. I'm currently using the likes of Nick Punto and Bobby Crosby as fill ins. Losing Morales for the duration with his freak injury has helped bring me down to earth. Hoping Posey can live up to his hype and put up some semi-decent numbers.
I did notice that you decided to punt saves, Tax. A strategy that has been used with some success in the past, so I wasn't all that surprised. Gotta watch those IP limits though.
I really was not comfortable with my big lead. More fun and exciting to have a dogfight to the end and let the chips fall where they may.

Rangers-Homer catch bad break (pun intended) with V Martinez heading to DL for a couple weeks.
Kudos to Red Scorpions. Obtaing Guerro should propell him up the standings by resolving his current 15th RBI position AND pushing him to the top of R, OBP and SLUG. The cost was steep in giving up Rollins, but dror hasn't had use of Rollins for most of season.

Well that last trade very well may decide one of the top two finishers. If coldwater continues his pace, that pretty much leaves the rest of us fighting it out for third to advance.
I only protest a trade if I suspect collusion. Both parties are too well respected to even remotely consider that.
I guess I just don't get it, but we'll see how it plays out.

WOW Electroman - what is that specific thing you were looking for? you paid alot for Rios - can he keep it up, Beltran - what is he gonna bring? and Johnson whose stats to me look like hes been dang lucky so far. could give Toral the push he needs to finish 2nd - just my opinion. i also think that only injuries could dethrone coldwater at this point.

I am only 70 pts behind Coldwater and I picked up .5 yesterday if I can do that everyday I'll only finish 25 behind him but look out when my injured stars return Roberts (remember him, Brian Roberts) and Ellsbury will lead me to an amazing comeback- from 13th to at least 8th so I don't drop back to AA next year By the way how can I lead the league in wins but be absolutely last in ERA and WHIP ? Some bad pitcher management there. Although I am a Giant fan my heart aches for the Phillies and the RedSox- between them they can make an all-star team from guys on the DL. (Besides which I drafted a whole lot of both of them in various leagues LOL).

Re 72 -- Yes, the Phillies are in trouble. Werth is in a monster psychological and batting slump -- you can see it in his body language. Lidge is awful and of course he is my only closer.... It is looking like the Lee trade was a disaster as the kids we got stink -- although the slump is due to the batters not being hitters, not the pitchers. Easily we should have 10 - 15 more wins based upon what the pitchers did when the batters did not. I need Tulo back.
Maybe the ASB will recharge (or just charge?) some batteries.

Judy, I feel (have felt) your pain. My trades of last month were exactly for the same reason. Solid SP like Tommy Hanson, Kevin Slowley, Jamie Garcia and Ted Lilly provided Wins and K's but they took turns over a 6 week period of putting up atrocias ERA and/or WHIP every-other start (sometimes I would be blessed with back 2 back bombs (Hanson and Slowly).
What are you going to do? There are no options for pitching on the table...and when Lee blows up as has Cain and Jimminez (the list goes on)...who is a safe play???

For those of you who remember: My feline buddy, Ghostie, had major liver surgery in March. He was not expected to survive a week. Well, he lasted 3+ months, but lost his battle today. He was a great companion for 15 years and I will miss him.

Judy..my condolences and heart felt sympathy for your loss of Ghostie. Yes, you will miss him, but in that same thought is the truth that you will never forget him (thus he lives though your thoughts).
My wife and I have spent 16 years in the pet industry (Invisible Fence Brand containment, doors, toys bark collars, remote trainers ETC.) petshomesafe.com Currently, we are owned by 5 cats and 2 dogs and want to share the following recent conversation.
Two months ago we lost (put down) a true sweet heart. The Vet, a close friend who previously had mentored us when we embarked into the world of pets and owners said to me as Charlie went limp in my hands: "Charlie (female chocolate lab) certainly lived a great life after you rescued her. Charlie had her time, and now you will get adopt another fortunate dog/cat and they too will get to lead a great life." Closing the book on Ghostie will allow you to save another pet's life and thus provide you an opportunity to forge a new relationship. The new relationship will not replace what you enjoyed with Ghostie, but will hopefully develop into something special for both you and the newbie. Simply said, Ghostie's passing offers opportunity to another when you are ready.
I just reread this post and realize how preachy it sounds. For that I am sorry. I hope the underlying truth of it helps.
ps..I could feel a more compassionate if you would stop with the 4.5 point/night gains.

Watching the Yanks/Rays game, great game btw, and just listening to them talk about the two teams, gives you incentive to hate the Yankees and the system. They are talking about the Yanks adding Berkman, and the fact that if the Rays add salary, the owner says that it comes off the total salary the next year. I would really love to see the Rays win it all this year, they remind me of my beloved Expos(RIP).

Yeah, I can see that, but it is the system also that allows teams like the Yankees to do what they do. They also said that this is the first time in TB that they sell out 3 staight games in a row, which kinda tells you why the owner is tentative about putting too much money in the payroll, the fans are not coming when he is putting a great product on the field. Just a little note on Montreal, because people love to poo pooh Montreal, that would never happen hear. A team like that would be beloved in this city. Man do I miss live Baseball.

Meawnhile, I am pretty happy my team is (for now) safely tucked in at 6-7 considering 5 of my first 9 picks in the draft were terrible:
Sizemore Figgins Chipper McLouth Mike Gonzalez
I made some good FA picks in May, but now all of those guys are starting to fail (or already have). So now its just a matter of hanging on so I can stay in AAA.

Yeah that was a really bad call --they gotta change that rule to "ball bounces in fair play" for it to be a fair ball, but even then he woulda missed it as he wasn't looking at the bounce spot, but with a different rule, he would be in a different position, although that did not change the call in the 09 playoffs where the ump was staring at the left field line and called a two foot in ball out!
As a Phillies Phan, we will take all we can get. With all the injuries (only Werth and Ibanez have not gone to the DL), we are hanging in there. Upcoming series with Bravos and Jints will determine a LOT.

Pretty good battles right now for the 3rd and 8th spots. My 'safely tucked' is no longer safe! And now I have no closers. Well, maybe half a closer with Hoffman. C'mon Showalter, give Gonzalez his closing job!

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!
This is it and it should be interesting.... I hold a tenuous 2.5 point lead over coldwater who's going all in with 6 SPs today. He'll probably gain at least one or 2 points in K's and/or Ws, but must hope for a minimum number of blow ups so's not to give it back in percentages.
I have only closers and MRs going and need my hitters to come through with a decent day and pick me up a point or so.
Graydog is 6 back and though not impossible, he has a long road to hoe and needs things to break just right.
Regardless, all of us are a lock to finish top 3. There is no tiebreaker system in Yahoo rotisserie leagues, so any tie for first will result to co-champions. The season ends today. No games after today will count per Yahoo rules.
I almost hate to see the season end... it's been such a blast. And it's been an honor to compete against a great group of managers in this league.
Nerf and Da Bomb look to have secured the 7-8 slots to remain qualified in AAA next year, though they are only separated by 1 point.

Congratulations to MJD on his win. That was quite a pennant race put on there. Interesting how it turned out different than everyone at the halfway point thought, was not a runaway at all. Congratulations to coldwater coyotes and Graydog for earning the promotion.
The race for 4-5-6 was quite a competition in itself. Thanx to Judy and Taxman for such an exciting race.
As for my team's chances of doing better...I knew I was finished when folks started talking about how my trade was such a steal and was going to vault me into 2nd place. That was a jinx for sure. In all my fantasy career, whenever there's a trade and everyone moans and says "Oh no, what a steal. That trade is going to give that team the pennant" it never happens, never.
And props to Nerfherder and Da Bomb as well for staying AAA-qualified.
A very fun league.

I think this might be my best managing job ever in RIBC.
My hitting draft was horrendous. I have a way to calculate point contributions for all of my players: here are my drafted players, their games played, and their point contributions.
1. Ryan Howard, 141, 3.83 2. Grady Sizemore, 33, -2.16 3. Chones Figgins, 161, -4.58 (not all his fault. 62 runs scored with 42 SB is incredible.) 4. Chiiper Jones, 95, -0.17 5. Nate McLouth, 39, -3.58 6. Vlad Guerrero, 75, 5.56 7. Marco Scutaro, 151, -4.47 8. Everth Cabrera, 33, -1.73 9. Russ Martin, 96, -4.11 10. Corey Hart, 24, -0.27 11. Russ Branyan, 10, -1.01 12. Jack Cust, 0, 0 (started the season in AAA so instantly replaced.
So my 12 drafted offensive players produced 858 of my 1756 games started (49%), and accounted for 12.69 points below replacement value (a replacement value player would score 79, 75, 10, .349, .449 over a full season).
From the very beginning I had to scramble to find suitable replacements for nearly all of my drafted players. One does not expect to come in the top half of a league when they have to replace 9 of their 12 drafted players before the middle of August, and then 2 of the 3 remaining were not good anyways.
On the other hand, my pitching was great, and was the big reason my team was there at the end. But without filling the lineup with the likes of Luke Scott, Danny Valencia, and Logan Morrison in the second half, I would not have made it to 7th.

Thanks to all for a memorable season. My first trip to the RIBC is mostly a result of good timing and great luck.
Started off with a poor draft slot pick and wound up with the 14th pick.
A little post season analysis:
The draft. Ok, but not great. I really dedicated myself to check line ups before every single game and led the league in transactions. 1.14 Matt Kemp-really excited that he “fell” to me. Was hoping for a 30/30 season. Got 28/19, OBP .310, SLG% .450. Too many CS. Still only 26 years old. Maybe a year or so too early expectations-wise, but he did help me during crunch time by hitting a HR in each of his last 5 games.
2.03 Ian Kinsler-only played in 103 games this year due to multiple DL trips. Wasn’t expecting another 30/30 repeat of ’09, but 9/15 with an OPS < .800 was disappointing.
3.14 Jayson Werth-other than the month of July, I thought he performed better than expected. Career high > .900 OPS. Philly fans complained about him all season, but he worked out fine for me and really helped me out during crunch time while his team was in the midst of clinching a division crown. Even chipped in with 13 SB.
4th round-Kendry Morales. Was well on his way to a second consecutive great season before his season ended after 50 games when he broke his leg celebrating a walk off salami. I had just taken over 1st place one month prior to his loss and I figured that I was toast unless I did something quick. Shortly thereafter, I made a well timed trade. I traded my 9th round pick, Jason Heyward to Graydog for Buster Posey, who had just been called up from the minors. Well timed, as JHey injured his thumb on a head first slide shortly after the trade which led to a brutal slump and a trip to the DL. In the mean time, Posey was qualified at 1B and handed the full time catcher’s job by SF. The transition from JHey to Posey was seamless. JHey was raking prior to his injury and Posey picked right up where Heyward left off. It’ll be interesting to see if one of these guys wins ROY.
That was my second trade of the season. The first was my 5th round pick, Ian Stewart to Bags for then Nats closer, Matt Capps. As I recall, Bags had a group of closers to choose from, including Andrew Bailey. Bags must have thought I was crazy and I’ll admit to some early buyer’s remorse, but after Capps was traded to the Twins, it worked out perfectly. Capps ended up with 42 saves and good percentages while Bailey battled injuries from mid season on, finishing with only 25 saves before shutting it down for the season in mid September. I have no idea why I chose Capps over Bailey.
Speaking of closers, I hate them and didn’t draft one until the very end of the closer run, picking Leo Nunez in the 10th and John Rauch in the 11th rounds. At the time, Rauch was only the speculative closer of the Twins. I honestly considered semi-punting saves, but when Rauch and Nunez started out hot, I made the Capps deal, as I saw an opportunity to capitalize on that category. Nunez lost his job before the end of the season, but I saw that coming and was able to grab his replacement off the FA scrap heap. Another decent FA acquisition was Chris Sale in the last month of the season. He provided me with 2 wins and 4 saves that last month to allow me to pick up a valuable extra point in those 2 cats.
Two other noteworthy players that need mentioning are my 7th round pick, Hunter Pence, who put up good numbers and finished strong and a bit of a sleeper in the 16th, Casey McGehee. I almost offered him instead of Stewart for Capps to Bags. That would have been a huge mistake, as McGehee broke out for 24 HRs , 103 RBIs, and an .800 OPS while Stewart got injured, slumped, and lost his full time job. I'd rather be lucky than good.
Looking at my overall draft, I obviously drafted for hitting, specifically power/speed combo guys. Drafting pitching early usually spells disaster for me. In fact, the only SPs to stay on my team all year were Gallardo (6th round), Liriano (14th), and De La Rosa (15th), but I got valuable contributions from FA pick ups Jon Garland, Clayton Richards, Vicente Padilla, Brian Duensing, and Carlos Zambrano, of all people. He’s been the captain of my “never again” team since about 2007, when I foolishly drafted him in the second round. I remember finally trading him for a ham sandwich and a bag of donuts and thinking what a great deal I had made. I also picked up a timely spot start from Chris Volstad while looking to max out on my IP. My middle relievers were decent, especially Jonny Venters who gave me over 1 K/IP a sub 2.00 ERA and a WHIP just a tick over 1.00.
Finally, my MVP was an undrafted guy, not even deemed worthy of a top 400 player ranking in our draft (though Yahoo had him preranked 380-something), Jose Bautista. He had no full time position coming out of spring training and looking back at my first FA pickup of the season, I’m not even sure why I picked him up on April 5th, as even though he was playing because of injuries, did not hit his first of 54 HRs until a week after I picked him up. I’m guessing that I was spitballing and he had multiposition eligibility, so why not. Joey Batts had 9 multi-homer games and several nice games in my stretch run.
I honestly did not expect to win coming into the last weekend with a slim lead. I thought for certain that this league would be won on the last day, coming from behind. Oddly enough, I actually would have preferred to be the hound instead of the fox. Luckily, everything that I needed to happen did. That rarely ever happens to me in fantasy sports.
Nice job hanging in until the end, everyone. I distinctly remember cussing out managers who were totally out of it as I fought them tooth and nail for every last half point. Just proves how important it is to play things out to the end. It really can make a difference in the overall competitive balance of the league. Again, thanks to all and congrats to those advancing and those who fought to the end to stay in AAA next year.
Thank you Judy for commishing and special thanks to Guru for providing us with this great format and web site.
One last very important thing. If you have not done so recently, please consider a contribution to RotoGuru. I know that any amount is greatly appreciated, especially under our current economic situation.

I have never received so many props for finishing in 8th, but I'll take qualifying again as opposed to not...
Good job mjd. By the way, it was me who you traded with and not Bags.
And Taxman, you had a decent prediction of CC winning the league by a mile. I thought it was fairly bold but he did come in a close 2nd so you were not too far off.
