0 Subject: 12th Annual RotoGurupie Keeper League

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Feb 18, 2011, 12:50

Let's start a new thread for 2011, and use this instead of league emails for as much communication as possible.

First, we need to confirm participation for 2011. Thus far, I think we have heard from the following:

Guru
Russell
Mike V
jumpball
Mighty magics
Solvang
deepsnapper
coldwater
Rotiserie chicken

If that's correct, then only one team has yet to respond: Day Time Dream Team. I see that they have two managers listed on the owner info page. Has either one responded yet?

Assuming we have all ten, then we need to decide at least a few issues.
1. Should we stick with 4 keepers, or increase to 5 this year?

2. Should we allow for pre-draft trading - which could involve swapping players and/or draft picks?

3. Another issue that arose last year (when it was too late to resolve for 2010) - should we allow a team to keep less than the requisite number of players? If so, how would those extra slots be filled?

In the latter issue, one possibility would be to let teams with less than a full complement of keepers to draft those slots from the available player pool before the first regular round of the draft begins.

Please cast your votes in this thread, regardless of whether you've previously commented on them in an email.

1. I'd prefer increasing to 5 keepers.
2. Yes to pre-draft trading
3. I'd just as soon force everyone to keep a full complement of keepers (for simplicity), but don't feel strongly about it.

When this league was formed, the rules were designed so that philliephan would participate.
In his honor, I vote to not change any of the rules for our league -- that would be exactly 4 keepers with pre-draft trades allowed.

I'm persuaded that it is unfair to change from 4 to 5 keepers prior to the start of this season. We should have known last year what the keeper rules would be, in order to manage properly.

I'm not opposed to increasing this to 5, but if we do that, it should go in force after this season, not before it.

Thus, I'm changing my vote to 4.

Although Tang hasn't yet voted on this, the current results are as follows:
5 keepers: 3
4 (or less) keepers: 5
either 4 or 5: 1
no vote: 1

As such, unless someone else changes their vote (and since I changed mine, anyone else should have the same privilege), I think, we have generally greed to remain at 4 keepers. If nothing else, we should have at least a majority to make a change - and we don';t seem to have that.

As to the other issues, we seem to be in favor of pre-season trading for keepers and picks. We never had a firm rule on that, but have done it in the past when time permitted. So that seems to be OK.

And there is no sentiment to allowing people to keep less than the required number.

So - barring a change in vote - everyone must keep exactly four players.

Still waiting for deepsnapper to register draftime. For clarity, please mark your keepers at the ESPN site, and also post them here.

Let's follow this timeframe:

1. Keepers must be declared by noon ET Saturday, March 19. Any trades involving keepers must be completed by then as well.

Draft will officially start on Sunday morning, March 20. I'll have the draft system activated sometime on Saturday afternoon so that you can set up queues in advance, if needed.

As a reminder, the draft order will be as follows:
1 Chen
2 Deepsnapper
3 jumpball
4 Guru
5 marko
6 Russ
7 Coldwater
8 Shaio
9 Mike V

Then your idea of picking works.

I'd like to vote to start the draft on Friday. That'll give us a slow weekend to get started and an extra 2 days before the season starts in case we need it.

Dream Team has not yet submitted any keepers, and the announced deadline has now passed.

The 3 most obvious choices are:
Tulowitzki
Halladay
Lincecum

For the 4th keeper, the highest ADP is Justin Upton, but a case could also be made for Ichiro or Carlos Santana.

In the absence of instructions, I'm inclined to go with ADP as the criteria - but I'm open to feedback.

Mewanwhile, Mighty Magics has listed only 3 keepers (Howard, Felix, Cano). There is no conceivable advantage to having only 3 keepers, so I need to pick a 4th.

Using ADP, the top hitter is Jose Reyes, followed by Jason Heyward. Either of those would seem to be a better choice than the next pitcher, which is Chris Carpenter.

Using the same logic, I'm inclined to go with Reyes - but in a keeper league, I can see that Heyward might have appeal.

Again, any feedback? I'm going to make one last attempt to contact each by email, but several emails this weeks have already been sent without response. I hope we don't have a no-show issue for the draft.

I've sent out several emails this week from ESPN - which you all should have received. I also just sent them each a separate email using the registered address at Draftime, in case that's different.

I'm going to set up the keepers on Draftime this afternoon, and then activate the draft early this evening. Since Chen has the first pick, we'll still be waiting if he hasn't gotten the word. But at least people can set up queues then, if needed.

Still no response from Chen or Tang, so I entered those keepers and activated the draft.

Typically, we go untimed for the first round, just to be sure everyone is on board. Since Chen has the opening pick, I told him that if he wanted to adjust his keepers, he could do so prior to his first pick. Tang can also amend, but only if it's done before pick 1.01.

Note that at Draftime, you now have more flexible queuing options. You can set a general queue (for any pick), or a pick specific queue. You can have your queue available to a designated picker, or you can have the system autopick, either immediately when it is your turn, or after a specified waiting period.

Note that if it is your turn to pick, and you have a queue marked "available", I will pick from it unless you have it set for time delayed autopick.

If you have any other questions, please ask here.

Chen can pick as soon as he appears. The rest of you can set up queues if you wish.

Now that we have completed the first round, I will turn on the clock.

We'll start with a 6 hour clock, with a draft pause from 1am to 7am EDT. Hopefully, most of you will not need your full clock allotment, because we won't finish on time of you do.

Remember - if you want me to be able to pick from your queue, it must be marked as "available".

As you draft, if you have a chance to immediately pick up your drafted player at the ESPN site, that will help keep the database of available players as current as possible. For those whose picks are being made from queues, Mike V and I will try to keep the database current by moving those players onto your roster.

[51] It sounds like Russ expected me to pick for him, but he did not make his queue available - so I can't do it.

Setting me as a DP is insufficient. If you have names in your queue, I can only pick for you if you make the queue "available to pickers"

Based on the post from Russ, I'm going to ask the draftime site owner to make his queue available, since that seems like his clear intent. But please - if you want me to pick from your queue, make it available.

Be aware that there is another option. If you simply want the top name taken from you queue, you can turn on the autopick option (with or without a delay). That is your best choice for queuing if you will be unavailable, unless you want some logic applied - in which case you can use a DP.

agreed - BE1 can set up a queue for their next selection and only one pick is made. Shirley we can queue 8-9 players (worst case) to speed up the draft when we're going to be away for a while. (Instead of losing so many hrs.)

Use the queue, at most you have to queue 9 players and who's had 9 picks in a row from they're queue in the 10th(+) round? Heck I'm surprised if 2-3 are taken and I wonder what I'm drafting for. ;)

I will shorten the clock to 4 hours at the end of round 7. Frankly, that would have only saved us about 6 hours so far, which would still put us behind pace. (We should have completed 8 rounds by noon today.)

If we can't get back to a pace of 2 rounds per day, I'll need to shorten it again. Those who are chronically slow really should consider more frequent use of queues and auto-picks.

The Draft is complete. Please check your rosters at ESPN and make sure your team is complete and accurate. If you discover an error, you should be able to fix it yourself by dropping any incorrect players and adding any missing players.

In the meantime, please do not do any additional add/drops yet. I want to first make sure that all rosters are set up correctly.

My 25 player roster is correct. Guru - Thanks for all the help.

Since the season doesn't start until Friday, should all the remaining players go on the W/W and then run waivers on Wed AM or some other time before the season starts?

Seems more equitable than a first come - first claim for free agents. I know the original Sandbox league had a 2 day W/W period after the draft completed, and we'd have pushed their time limit on completing the draft. (prob today) lol

You are the best Guru. Thanks for all your help.
I remember Sandbox also. A long time ago.

Unfortunately, the way I set up this league, the only way to force all undrafted players through waivers now is to reset the draft, and then re-enter it entirely. Not gonna do that.

Let's simply allow free agent add/drops to commence at noon EDT on Wednesday. Not a perfect solution, but less imperfect (for me) than the alternative.

By the way, if there is someone you really want to add at noon tomorrow and you don't have access, send me an email and I'll add that player for you. If there are multiple requests for the same player, I'll use waiver priorities to determine who gets him. Waiver priorities start out the same as the draft order.

In fact, let's simply manually replicate a waiver period for undrafted players that I'll process at 11:45am EDT Wednesday. I don't plan to add anyone, so there should be no conflict of interest. Then, beginning at noon, F/A adds are FCFS.

Sorry, I made a boo boo. But I dropped the player I accidently picked up.

I received only one waiver request, from Mighty Magics, adding Jose Contreras, dropping Venable. Since he was already last in waiver priority, the priorities do not need to be adjusted.

FCFS add/drop transactions may begin at noon EDT (about 12 minutes from now.)
