0 Subject: RIBC AA Underdog Rationale Thread

Keep rationales in this thread. They are not required and based on years past I have a sneaking suspicion that this won't be the most active thread. But for those who wish to participate, clearly label your round, slot and person drafted and give your rationale. Also give a rationale if you can for your draft slot order.

NEVER mention undrafted players names.
Try to keep a 2 round separation, ie in round 3, post your round 1 rationales

I had 5th choice overall and had planned on taking one of the highest picks I could. Why? Because this may have been the first ribc league ever where I wasn't one of the last. 1 above me timed out and 1 above me took the 6th so I grabbed the 3rd.

1.3 Joey Votto, 1st Cin

As everybody with the 3rd pick does I seriously debated between the numbers rich votto and the position scarcity at SS with Tulo. In the end, I chose Votto because I just feel he's due for a monster year. Felt his overall numbers would be better.

2.11 Ian Kinsler, 2nd Tex

I debated Ryan Howard here figuring that would lock down power numbers and my 1st/CI slots. This time thru though I looked more at positional scarcity and found Ian Kinsler staring me in the face. Good power numbers. Potential 20+ SB. All around contributor. I also considered pedroia and reyes at this slot. Pedroia's foot injury last year scared me off. Reyes continued nagging type injuries the past 2 years scared me off. They were 3 of the next 4 picks

3.3 Shin-Soo Choo OF, Cle
Also considered Heyward here. I didn't want to jump straight to OF so early cause its a deep position but last year I waited a bit and by mid-april every OF I had drafted was replaced due to injury or slow starts with FA. Add in 20SB potential, 400 OBP and solid slg. Adam Dunn was also calling my name, but the power/speed combo I felt would serve me better. Was surprised to see heyward almost make it back to me in R4.

I had the 2nd overall choice and I decided to take pick 2.

1.02 Hanley Ramirez SS Fla I wanted pick 1 or 2 overall because I believe that Pujol and Hanley are the 2 best players in the game. I loved getting pick 2 and Hanley because I believe SS is the weakest position in fantasy baseball this year and I wanted the best player at his position.

2.12 Ryan Howard 1b Phi I am a huge Howard fan. I think he is a monster and the perfect compliment to Hanley. Unfortunately with Utley dinged up I dont know what will happen with his numbers, but he has a good line up around him and I think he will be huge.

3.02 Jose Reyes SS NYM I didnt really know where to go with this pick, but when I saw I could lock up 2 of the 3 best SS and secure my SS and MI I figured I would take it. I also believe getting 2 SS could be trade bait in the future. I believe there is a huge drop off after Reyes so I took him.

4.11 Jimmy Rollins SS, Phi

I'm a big fan of elvis andrus. But comparing the projected stats, Rollins looks a little better in the % stats. If I hadn't gone for rollins here I was going to take an OF and grab andrus next time around. I bounced back and forth and settled on rollins. I wanted speed and couldn't justify the speed OF I was eyeballing over the power OF I wanted. So I went w/ speed from the IF.

5.03 Brian McCann, C Atl

I was looking at my 4th and 5th round picks in conjuction with each other. I knew if I took speed at 4, that round 5 would be a power hitter. He stacked up very well against the OF I was considering and so I opted for positional scarcity. Figure I can get the same output here and similar output in OF later. Or get same output now from an OF and crap from a catcher later.

6.11 Dan Haren, SP LAA

I had this pick planned out carefully. I was going to hammer home some hitters and take jay bruce and get a real solid broad foundation for my hitting categories. Then I noticed SP was starting to move a bit more. I saw Haren, projected out to a top 12 starter still on the board. Quick change of plans, grab at least 1 SP and move on. Only reason I didn't jump at Bruce is because I was busy deciding between him for power or upton/victorino for speed.

7.03 Shane Victorino, OF Phi

There was plenty of power bats left to pick in later rounds, but all the speedsters left for later round picks up have major drawbacks. Figured with BJ upton on the board as 5-cat contributor he's the man....until wiggs took him at 6.12....right after I drafted haren instead of a hitter I wanted. But really, who can complain about victorino as a consellation prize?

8.11 Matt Cain, SP San

I feel I have a pretty good foundation for hitting at t his point, 6/7 hitters and many of them crossover between power and speed. Cain was still on the board and with him and Haren I felt I matched up against any other team's pitching that hadn't drafted 3+SP yet. Enough K's to help, good era/whip. The W's will come.

9.03, 10.11, 11.03 Fransisco Rodriguez, JJ Putz, Chris Perez - Closers

The 'closer run' started shortly after my round 8 pick. So when it got back to me I figured I'd have to take at least 1. I did with head-case Rodriguez in Round 9. As long as he stays out of jail and doesn't beat anybody up he'll rack up saves and add in some nice K's. Came back around to me pick to pick in round 10 on the short turn and I figured the closer run would continue so I'd better grab #2 while there were worthy candidates. I have 20 picked before it comes back to me.

Putz was an absolute top tier fantasy closer for a period a few years back. He's had some injuries and while I don't expect old putz, he seemed better than the rest.

When a number of closers were on the board coming back to me in round 11(on the short turn) I figured this was my chance to get a 3rd closer with a pretty secure job and a big lead over other managers in the S category. Now my only question is - do I draft a 4th closer and use him as trade bait to fill in positions I'm missing?

12.011 Colby Lewis, SP Tex

Texas has one heck of an offense to provide good run support. Lewis is projected for a sub-4 ERA, depending on where you look anywhere from 3.6 to 3.80. Add in his run support and 15 wins is likely. Add in his projected K's to be anywhere from 180 to 190 and in round 12 I'm not sure how I could pass that up. Starter #3 is on the books for me.

Slots 9, 11 and 12 of 13 were available when I picked... if 13 was there I'd have taken it. Instead I went with the one closest to the center of the draft.

1.9 C. Gonzalez, OF, Col
With the 9th pick of the draft I jumped at CarGo, I've seen him picked as high as 3rd elsewhere. Great power, good OBP plus steals make him a five category hitter, can't ask for more then that with the 9th pick in a league with five categories.

2.5 M. Teixeira, 1B, NYY
Let me preface this by saying that, due to last season, I hate fantasy baseball's Mark Teixeira. In 2010 I took him in the first round multiple times. He started the season more horribly then normal and, though he had decent numbers by the end of the year, I'm not convinced he lived up to his first round status. The 5th pick of the second round isn't much later, but he's bound to bounce back a bit right? And bouncing back from 33/108/113/.365/.481 has to be worth the 18th pick of the draft... right?

3.09 C. Lee, SP, Phillies
At pick 35 of the draft I couldn't pass up what I had as the #3 pitcher in baseball. On a team picked by many to dominate the NL he'll come up big in wins, score great in WHIP and ERA, and though he won't come up with 200 K's, he won't hurt that category either. If Lee were gone here, I'd have snagged Lester.

4.05 V. Martinez, C, Det
At this point of the draft the top players remaining appeared to be a number of hitters with question marks and downsides that keep them from being "sure things," something I hope to still land in the 4th round and SP's. I thought about taking another SP and going for broke there... but in the end decided on VMart. In a thin fantasy position he should rank in the top 3 or 4, put up an OPS of +/- .850 and, with substantial DH time, play many more games then the normal catcher.

5.09 D. Price, SP, Rays
He may give me the 200 K's Lee won't, will win a ton of games and I think many are letting him slide further then they would after his 2010 season due to the perception that the Rays will stink this year. His peripheral stats should be good and I had him ranked considerably higher then other remaining SP's. I thought about Rios here but decided it was too soon and hoped to get him on the way back; as it turned out, he went three picks later.

6.05 P. Sandoval, 3B, SF
Ok, this one might be a reach, or more appropriately, a check out line spur of the moment purchase. If he puts up numbers like 2010, I screwed up. Or, maybe reports are correct and he really got into shape, ditched his controlling interest in fast food joints and donut shops, and will put up an .850 - .900 OPS again, equaling great value at a thin position.

7.09, M. Rivera, RP, NYY
Ah, the hell with it. I went with arguably the best, most reliable closer in the history of the game here. He'll give me three strong categories on a team expected to get him 40+ save chances. My other consideration here was Marmol, his thousands of K's but lesser WHIP and ERA. Frankly, I've chosen him over MO in other leagues this year, I wanted try this.

8.05 B. Gardner, OF, NYY
Many projections have Ellsbury and Gardner putting up nearly identical numbers, yet Gardner was available 43 picks after Ellsbury went to begin round 5. I needed the steals, his OBP lead the Yanks last year and, if he hits at the top of the lineup, he ought to score somewhere in the neighborhood of a metric ton of runs. I'll gladly take that in round 8.

9.09 A. Cabrera, SS, Clev
Um... I needed a shortstop.

Ok, that's not fair.

When I left the house that afternoon of round 9 I was hoping for one of two players: KRod or Markakis. Admittedly I didn't do a horribly good job of preparing for anyone else here so I took a few things into consideration with this pick... beer, sun, more beer, and finally the Rays and Red Sox spring training game. Hey, only minutes before this pick I watched Longo and Manny just a few feet from me sign dozens of autographs for kids, it's a great time of year!

So, while I was aware that I could have held the draft up for a couple of hours until I got home to make the pick before I timed out, I decided that I didn't want to hold things up; there was no reason I couldn't make an educated pick on my phone as the crowd cheered, the sun went down and the lights came on at the ballpark. Wrong.

Tomorrow will be my fifth (but not last!) spring training game. I'm doing my best to curb the inappropriate drafting urges. So far I've been better prepared to draft at the other games... I expect to be so tomorrow too. However, if I somehow choose Joey Belle around 2pm EST... well...

10.05 P. Hughes, SP, NYY
Wow, 4 of 10 picks from the evil empire? For a Rays fan (yes, there are a few of us, I'll be at opening day and 15+ more games)... this is turning into a Yankees centric lineup.

I figured I could cement my pitching with another SP here and Hughes will get me good wins, decent K's and his WHIP and ERA should improve this year. While I've been high on Morrow in other drafts this year, I thought he might have been a bit of a stretch... a full year of Hughes looks like a more more reliable gamble.

11.09, M. Ramirez, OF, Rays
This was a "homer that I'm witnessing in person" pick. Manny is happy. Manny is motivated. Manny's looking to prove himself and score a contract worth more then the relative peanuts he's getting from the Rays. Did I mention yet that Manny was signing autographs for kids just a few feet from me? All of this will translate into a season worthy of much better then the 139th pick of the draft. He's fully capable of a .900 OPS... if he plays the majority of the year, that will translate into big counting stats. If he doesn't perform, the Rays have lost only a small sum of $$$, and I've only blown a mid-round pick. I'll take that bet.

12.05, A. Bailey, RP, A's
Preseason projections had him as a top ten closer... or better. Then he came down with what appeared to be a potentially horrifying injury to his surgically repaired elbow in spring training, so his draft status plummeted. By the time I made this pick, it was reported that Dr. Andrews thinks his arm is fine... I'll take that and my second closer here. Without this setback there's no way Bailey outlasts some of the other closers already taken, here's hoping he's fine.

reposting to get my numbers right. and going back to kindergarten to learn how to count:

13.03 Carlos Quentin OF ChiSox

I've been wanting to firm up my OF for a while now and had Quentin targetted for 2-3 rounds as a slg OF. Yes, he has health questions. But I had been targetting Jay Bruce for a few rounds and when I finally decided on the round to pull the trigger, he was taken a few picks before it got back to me. Looking back, I don't see another player I regret having. In fact it was mostly McCann's slot I was looking at bruce in. but I think McCann/Quentin is better than Bruce/Catcher I'd get at this point, so no regrets. He helps solidify my slg/power cats which I think took a bit of a hit mid-draft.

14.11 Logan Morrison, OF Fla

Young kid with very good upside potential. More power OF. I needed the bats after spending so much time on pitchers. He seemed the best option available. .450+ slg, .370+ obp. good rbi ops.

15.03 David Freese 3rd, StL

I don't have a 3rd baseman yet. A few rounds I was figuring I'd take one and targetted a guy and he went before getting back to me so I put the position off as no one player stood out above the rest at that position and other positions had better players. Still, Freese has a good line up and is projecting % stats that won't hurt me.

16.11 Edison Volquez, SP Cin

He had TJ surgery and missed half of last season, but the numbers he put up when he came back were solid. His whip will kill me. His ERA shouldn't be horrible but his K's and W's in round 14 are ridiculously good I believe. 14-16 W's and 185+ K's. Didn't expect to find those kinds of numbers still available. I guess Tommy John surgery is a 4-letter word in the fantasy world.

17.03 Fernando Rodney, RP LAA

I've already spent 3 picks on closers. 3 closers with steady, secure jobs. Why a fourth? I'm looking at best available and filling out my roster and a solid closer, even one with Rodneys whip, seemed better than anybody else out there.

18.11 Ryan Theriot, MI StL

Wow, he's a starter for me. -Slg, probably a slight -obp. Certainly won't get too many rbi's. But his runs and SB should be helpful. And the StL line up looks pretty solid. Can't really complain about one of their hitters. I maybe could have taken Miguel Tejada here but I'm honestly not sure what to expect from him.

19.03 Chipper Jones, 3rd/CI Atl

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, I lose RIBC twice. Yeah, chipper was my 3rd baseman last year. He got my hopes up, actually made me think it was a good choice. Then his injuries set in. Why do I think this year is going to be any different? Well in r19, I've invested a bit less in him. So that means I lose less, right? Right? Please tell me thats what it means.

Please?

20.11 Jim Thome, Util Min

Considering his projections for slg, rbi's and obp, its amazing to get a player of his abilities in round 20. Considering his age and all the questions surrounding his ability to keep going, I wonder if I could have put him off another round or 2.

21.03 Julio Borbon, OF Tex

Don't even want to look at what his projected % stats are. But if I fall behind in runs/SB, I can plug him for a few games here and there.

22.11 Jake Peavy, SP ChiSox

Who knows what I get here. Reports are he's fighting tendinitis, nothing more. I think my SP is pretty solid. If he pans out, I have more than I need and can maybe plug a hitting hole. If he doesn't I throw him back and don't really think I'll be overly hurt in the SP department anyway.

23.03 John Mayberry, OF Phi

He's apparently going to start until injured players return. I figured I might as well take a chance on him. He either pans out and I get something for him or I throw him back

24.11 and 25.03 Ryan Madson and Jose Contreras RP Phil

3 phillies players with my final 3 picks. Madsen could potentially keep a roster spot all season with me as a solid middle reliever. But while lidge is on the dl, these 2 are splitting closing duties.

My plan: Load up on hitters early (preferably middle infielders), grab one elite SP, load up on more hitters and pitchers through the middle rounds, and wait on RP. The batters I look for all need high on base percentages. I really go for younger players that are either entering their prime, or in the middle of it. It takes a little bit of projection but it usually works for me.

I had first choice and picked slot 1 for obvious reasons. How could I pass up the undeniable best fantasy player?

1.01 - Albert Pujols - Need I say more?

Now I knew it would take eons for the next pick to get back to me. I really wanted to grab an elite 3B because of the scarcity but of course they wouldn't fall to me. Guys like Rodriguez, Youkilis, Zimmerman didn't fall to me. I wanted to load up on middle infielders early if I could.

2.13 - Dustin Pedroia - Primed for a bounceback year. I like to work on my middle infield early if I could. This is where my original strategy began to shift.

3.01 - Andrew McCutchen - I'm really high on this guy even though he plays for the Pirates. He does it all and his stats will only be better batting third in that lineup. Could have gone with a pitcher, but didn't want to get one this early.

4.13 - Tommy Hanson - This is the guy I wanted to anchor my staff. Another young guy who looks like he is about to enter his prime.

5.01 - Jacoby Ellsbury - I'm a Yankee fan and this is already my 2nd Red Sox player. Ugh. Even though Ellsbury seems to get hurt as if I'm playing with his voodoo doll, I can't deny his ability when he is playing. The guy runs a lot and would score a ton in that offense.

(Notice I haven't really loaded up on my middle infielders as I originally planned. I felt like I would be reaching every time it came to me. Considering it took 26 picks to get back to me, I didn't want to reach.)

6.13 - Mike Stanton - My team was severely lacking in power. The only power guy I had was Pujols. I needed HRs and RBI. Even though his average may be lower than I'd like, I don't think his OBP will be too low. He had solid walk rates in the minors.

7.01 - Ben Zobrist - Really wanted to go back to my strategy of grabbing middle infielders. Felt like I'd be reaching for any SS or 3B, I thought I'd grab Zobrist (who I think should have a bounceback year).

8.13 - Shawn Marcum - Hoped Matt Cain would fall here. He was so close. I needed to add to my SP and this guy has huge upside from moving to the NL if he can stay healthy. I've seen this guy pitch very well in the AL East. He can be a beast facing the NL Central teams.

9.01 - Curtis Granderson - Needed more power. He fit the description. My team now had a good balance of power/speed/OBP.

10.13 - Brandon Morrow - High on him. Will get me a ton of strikeouts even if he doesn't live up to his expectations. A gut pick.

11.01 - Geovanny Soto - Knew I needed a C, SS, or 3B. I already had 4 outfielders. Felt like I was reaching for SS and 3B still. I knew Soto was still one of the top catchers and he would give me a very high OBP. Will provide me with consistent catcher production for the season.

12.13 - Hiroki Kuroda - Undervalued fantasy pitcher. Will have a very low WHIP and ERA and get at least 150 Ks. Glad he fell to me.

13.01 - Nick Swisher - Won't do as well as he did last season. But at least he'll provide me with a high OBP and get me some extra power.

14.13 - Mike Aviles - Really hoped Nishioka fell to me here. He didn't so I went with Aviles. Not much upside but I felt he could be a good placeholder until I found someone through free agency or later in the draft.

15.01 - Brandon League - My first RP. I don't like paying for saves. Little did I know that this strategy would really hurt me at the end of the draft. This is definitely my weakest position. Hopefully I can iron this out as the season progresses.

Other highlights in the draft. Loved grabbing 1B Moreland and Morse. Both could be huge for their offenses. James McDonald could be the ace for the Pirates. Will provide a ton of Ks and could be a nice surprise.

My favorite draft was by team Khahan. He seems to have all bases covered and he drafted a lot of the players I was targeting (Choo, Cain, McCann, Freese). He also stole Madson from me at the end of the draft when I finally thought I could grab a closer.

Strategy in the draft

Target best available players early. Use the middle rounds to solidify gaps in my stats, then go back to best available. Mid-draft I saw an opportunity to lock down closers and went with that but also felt for the most part, closers were some of the better players out there.

Favorite pick of my own

Round 12, colby lewis. I really had no idea about this guy. He was under my radar last season so when I saw last seasons stats and this seasons projected stats available in round 12 at approximately pick 154 I got a funny feeling in my unspeakables.

Least favorite pick

Rounds 11 and 12 going for closers that soon. I completely mis-read the closer run and over-reacted. Especially considering that later in the draft I was able to pick up even more. Though they are not as reliable. Colby Lewis, Nick Markakis, Wandy Rodriguez, Rafael Furcal, Nick Swisher, Chone Figgins are all names that went AFTER I picked my first closer.

Best Value pick
Certainly the potential of Edwin Jackson is far greater than the tail end of R22. I think wiggs set himself up great here with that pick.

Also, Jay Bruce to DH in round 8. I had been targetting bruce for a few rounds and took McCann over him then kept going in other directions.

Biggest overreach
We have nothing to base future predictions on other than the past 2-3 years "werth" of stats. But considering his new ballpack and lack of a line up around him, I can't help but wonder if early round 4, Donkey Hunter wasn't paying for the stats Werth put up the past few seasons. I'm just glad he was off the board and not there to tempt me in another few rounds.

C-1 going for Utley in R2. His injury was well documented and it was already reported it may be long term.

My own teams strength
I think I'm very well rounded. Tons of saves, solid SP. I have power in a number of spots, speed in a number of slots. I should be a very competetiveteam

My own teams weakness

Again, being well-rounded. I think I'm too well rounded. In these leagues you need to dominate a type of stats (like slg and rbi's) and be well rounded in the rest. I don't see me taking 13 points in any category except Saves which isn't enough.

Favorite team outside of my own

I'm going to have to go with Philliephanjr. He has the potential to be dominant in the power categories. Yet he has enough players to be competitive across the board. There are a number of teams that sacrificed speed for power and a few that sacrificed power for speed. But he should be near the top of the rankings in both as well as having solid SP and enough to compete in Saves.

Not going to lie, “I suck in this format!!!” Have tried 3 times and each time I have ended up in the bottom 3. So I wasn’t going to play but was getting emails saying they need a live body to fill league. So in years pass I had spent hours researching stats on OBP & SLG. This year I wasn’t worried about it, just figured I’d take best player available. Reason that I choose pick#6 spot instead of pick #3. I just like being in the middle of drafts for the flow. My normal mind set is 1st three picks take the best hitting players with some weight leaning towards 3rd and SS positions. If I did take pick #3 I would have taken Votto, only reason not Miggy because of his off field actions.

1.6 Cabrera, Miguel
So my plan was Longoria but with Miggy still on the board, I took him happily.

2.8 Zimmerman, Ryan.
Was hoping for elite 3rd baseman Wright or Arod but Zimmerman fits in to my plan nicely. Hope his boo boo isn’t nagging all year.

3.6 Hamilton, Josh
He wasn’t on my radar at all, plan was Dan Uggla, I like filling in infield before going with pitcher or outfield. But every website I was looking at said Hamilton was DaMan.

4.8 Weeks, Rickie
Don’t like this pick, think I overreached. Was bummed I didn’t get Uggla or Phillips and had 2nd base locked in my head. I’m a Brewers fan and like Weeks but think I just paid for his career year.

5.6 Andrus, Elvis
Another overreach? After doing a few drafts he has gone a few rounds lower. But not many SS to pick from, only good for runs and SB’s. If I had a do over would have looked at Price or Josh Johnson.

6.8 Weaver, Jered
Love this pick! Weaver is high on my SP list and will anchor my staff.

7.6 Liriano, Francisco
Dislike everything from Minnesota. But love Francisco, his 2nd half stats were great. Got to see him pitch last year and was in ahhhhhh. He stayed two hours after the game and was signing every kids stuff. Moved him up my list for good guy.

8.8 Marmol, Carlos
Dislike everything from Chicago. But Carlos is 3rd on my closers list. Felt a closer run was going to start so jumped on for the ride.

9.6 Rasmus, Colby
At this point my hitting team is looking powerful besides Elvis. I was looking for a OF with balance. Wanted Chris Young but he was taken. Looked at Wandy Rodriguez but didn’t want to take four pitchers in a row. One of the sites I looked at had a Rasmus review and I got sucked in.

10.8 Sanchez, Jonathan
He’s been on my keeper league for the last 3 years and every year he’s going the right way. His WHIP is a tad high but it’s also going down. Other player that was on Q was Soto.

11.6 Valverde, Jose
Looked like a 2nd closer run was starting. Axford was my 1st choice but hate having too many Brewers on my team because then I don’t enjoy watching the games as much. Bailey scared me a little to much.

12.8 Gonzalez, Gio
Another high K guy with high WHIP but looked great in the 2nd half of the season. Wanted to take Hart but have him in another league and worried about his injury.

13.6 Pagan, Angel
Just looking for steals and fair OBP. Angel has been hit the ball this spring and running. Plus he got the starting CF job. Was looking at Adam Jones and Rajai Davis.

14.8 Pena, Carlos
I wanted Jose Tabata!!! Had him Q’d up and all set to pick but thought I could wait one more round. Pena…YUCK. In this format he’s ok and thought maybe with new park he would improve with other stats as well.

15.6 Sanchez, Gaby
I like him more then Pena. Better upside all around. Was looking at Vernon Wells. Still pissed about Tabata.

16.8 Escobar, Alcides
So looking at my team I felt I was weak at SB’s so was looking at Austin Jackson. Well if that isn’t special he goes off the board one pick ahead of me. And my auto pick Q takes Escobar. Wasn’t planning on him for another 2 rounds but I did like what I saw of him coming up with the Brewers. He has the speed but we had a tight rope on him. Plus he didn’t get on base much. Looking for a nice turn around.

17.6 Snider, Travis
This is the part of the draft where picks are huge but since I play in mostly 10 team leagues without CI, MI. So I struggle, Just going off some so called experts sheet, was at work and just went with it.

18.8 Posada, Jorge
Need a catcher, Jorge numbers looked the best for any pitchers left on yahoo.

19.06 Wells, Vernon
Was marking off my cheat sheet and saw Wells was still left. Had to research to see if he was hurt. Could be my steal of draft.

20.08 Guthrie, Jeremy
Was looking for a pitcher with low WHIP and wins. I picked up Guthrie last year in the 2nd half and he performed well. His 2nd half stats. 8W, 62K, 2.76ERA, .99Whip

21.6 Arroyo, Bronson
High Wins low WHIP last year. Always take 1-2 months before he warms up. But really should have taken De La Rosa. A lot more upside.

22.8 Capps, Matt
In my keeper league I have Nathan so I had to handcuff him to Capps. Was just sitting down to ESPN and they showed Nathan getting lit up again. Figured what the hell. Get some early season Saves from Capps till Nathan gets in going or maybe get allot more……

23.6 Johnson, Chris
Just taking some flyers on MI & CI on players that are having hot springs.

24.6 Gonzalez, Alex
Just taking some flyers on MI & CI on players that are having hot springs.

25.8 Stauffer, Tim
Just looking for long shot pitcher that could shoot up chart. Padres named Stauffer their Opening Day starter. Great pitchers park.

Over all I hoping for a top 7 finish, middle of the pack, get some of my ego back and just to make it hard for the top 3 teams
My SLG% looks good, RUNS & RBIs fair, OBP & SB weak.
WINS fair, ERA good, K’s fair WHIP ok, SAVEs fair.

Just looking at the grid, not stats I like philliephan jr team then Khahan if his 3rd & CI were a little stronger. Alsodonkey but his pitching is a tad weak. But what the hell do I know. I suck in RIBC format. Good luck to all.

Actually GF, I think you've got one of the stronger teams this year. Just a little weak in sb/run production, but looks good to me in other stats

13.09 B. Abreu, OF, LAA
When I took CGon in round one, I figured I'd be setting myself up to score well in SB; since then the only SB threat I've picked up is Gardner... so as not to waste a category I thought I'd be strong in, I went for Abreu here, figuring that if he can still net 20/20 with a good OBP, he'll be worth everything and then some in the 13th round.

14.05 J. Zimmerman, SP, Nats
I've been targeting Zimm in a bunch of drafts... he's looked great in the spring, is firing in the mid-nineties and should be fully recovered from surgery. If this is all true, he's a steal as a 4th SP with a bunch of K's and decent WHIP/ERA. His only downside might be his lack of wins with the Nats bats backing him. No, I don't believe Jason Werth is going to be their savior.

15.09 L. Berkman, 1B, Cards
I'm hoping for an OPS of .825+ and lots of playing time in a stacked Cardinal lineup with my 15th round pick. If he can handle the OF (a big "if") without getting hurt and reverts to being an OBP machine, then I've scored big here. If not, well, there's always round 16.

16.05 K. Ka'aihue, 1B, KC
If Berkman doesn't pan out, my fellow Hawaiian born round 16 pick will should make up some of the difference. He's expected to get significant playing time this year, splitting time between 1B and DH, and his raw power has never been in question. He doesn't hit for average but, fortunately, this isn't a BA league. If, as expected, Kila draws his fair share of walks, he can be worth far more then a 16th round pick.

I picked the last pick because I didn't want 7 or 8 as when I draft I like to target a group of players or positions to keep my team balanced, I either like top of the draft or the bottom. I picked dead last as I liked the 2 picks in a row. I can make sure I'm around for 2 picks right away, but having a pick then picking again in 1 hour is a pain...

1.13 Roy Halladay - Was the best player on the board, had him pegged in the top 5 and was quite happy he fell to me. I love pitching, as you can see from my team.

2.01 Matt Holliday - Needed a bat here and I tend to lack pop on my teams so I went for Holliday who should be able to produce all around the board for me. I felt other power positions are deeper than OF this year.

3.13 Jon Lester - Again I love pitching, Jon Lester was the best left. I think with the lineup in Bos he will have his normal Ks, Whip, etc but will get more wins because of having the lead and pitching later with it.

4.01 Brandon Phillips - Thinking I took him a bit early, but I dunno. Middle IF is always tough for me, if he can get a decent OBP I think his SLG and SBs speak for themselves.

5.13 Kendry Morales - When I drafted him the last report I read was that he was ok and targeting opening day to come back. Since then there has been a set back. Even if he misses a few weeks, he will hit for OBP, SLG with RBIs.

6.01 Michael Young - Probably a bit too early for him, but I wanted a 3B and he seemed like a good idea. Always healthy, plays a ton of games. You can just put him in and forget bout him. I like that.

7.13 Clay Buchholz - I'm against having 2 pitchers from the same team, but I'm still going on that Bos pitchers stats will benefit from having a better lineup. He's due to win a bunch of games.

8.01 Alexei Ramirez - Only place he hurts a team is OBP, I think he's getting better and with Konerko and Dunn behind him, his runs will go way up.

9.13 Michael Bourn - Needed an OF and Needed Steals, got them both right here.

10.01 Trevor Cahill - Was surprised he was still around, had an excellent year last year after a rocky start. Needed to get a SP here, he was the best left.

11.13 Jonathan Broxton - Hoping the big guy stays healthy and saves a ton of games, need them big time. He was the best on the board at this point.

12.01 Matt Weiters - Needed a C, he was the best left. Hoping he gets it this year.

13.13 Leo Nunez - Expecting big things from him this year, I'm usually short on Saves I think with Broxton and Nunez I should be ok.

14.01 Ike Davis - This was around the time I found out Morales was out for a bit, plus I wanted a util player with some pop.

15.13 Chris Coghlan - Way early for him, I needed an OF. Shouldn't kill me but right around here I'm realizing I have weak bats.

16.01 Jeremy Hellickson - Still don't care I have weak bats, this guy is going to take Garza spot and run with it...

17.13 Sean Rodriguez - Needed a MI and thought he would due, he just hits. Decent OBP.

18.01 Jaime Garcia - can't resist SPsssssss

19.13 Justin Smoak - Well if Morales is out and I have to start Davis I still need a Util and CI... Smoak will hit some bombs this year.

20.01 Jonny Venters - he's going to share the save ops and if he doesn't win the job over Kimbrel, then he will get innings as a setup.

21.13 Kyle Drabek - My last pitcher, kinda on the limb here, there wasn't much left.

22.01 Marlon Byrd - Hitting at the top of the lineup, will score some runs. I remember him as a 2B in PHI when he was terrible. I hope he is not anymore.

23.13 Yadier Molina - Backup Catcher, and that's that.

24.01 Alexi Casilla - yeah dunno what I picked him, MI, probably going to drop him.

25.13 Michael Brantley - Another OF? Why not, he'll get some playing time and that's all that matters at this point. Kinda Wanted Pavano here but he went 10 picks earlier.

1.11 Adrian Gonzalez

Was pretty happy he fell here. All around offensive powerhouse moving into a better park for him. Weird to say he has upside to improve but I think it is a fair statement. I considered Halladay here but I try to resist early phillies picks since i have a tendency to overvalue them.

2.3 Alex Rodriguez

Position scarcity, still a stud, etc. etc.

3.11 Nelson Cruz

Carried my best team last year and I expect him to put up solid numbers across the categories.

4.3 Dan Uggla

I didn't plan to take a power hitter here given my team so far, but I felt he slipped and with OF and SS open I figured I could pick up speed later.

5.11 Josh Johnson

Didn't have a pitcher yet. Josh Johnson was available. No brainer for me.

6.3 Cole Hamels

A phillies fan can only wait so long. I think Cole is kind of underrated. Obviously no one thinks he is a normal #3 but he is still hamels and he should only be getting better.

7.11 Max Scherzer

I felt my team was off to a good start and no one was sticking out to me so I went for a third SP with lots of upside.

8.3 Billy Butler

He doesn't have the stats you want maybe, but in the 8th round I love him here as my CI

9.11 Rafael Furcal

Filling in the infield with one of the last decent SS in my mind. Will get me some steals and decent average if he can stay healthy.

10.3 Huston Street
11.11 Francisco Cordero

I don't like closers, so I always just end up with a slew of mediocre ones. I got the impression from reading a couple threads that I needed to grab closers when they started going.

12.3 Neil Walker

MI with upside that already started to establish himself in the big leagues.

13.11 Adam Jones

One of those players that I value higher than most people consistently. Hopefully this is the year he makes me look smart.

14.3 Joel Hanrahan

Reliever blah

15.11 Mike Napoli

Not sure if this is a viable plan since his playing time seems uncertain. If he plays enough I like this pick, but I suppose I will have to pick up another catcher.

16.3 Madison Bumgarner

4th SP. The upside is certainly there but we will see how a full big league season treats him.

17.11 Dexter Fowler

Cheap SB time

18.3 David Aardsma

I figured even if I dont really need them picking up saves in the 18th round is unlikely to backfire.

19.11 Peter Bourjos

Don't know that much about him but I read up some and wanted an upside pick here and I think he has it.

20.3 Ervin Santana

Why not?

21.11 Freddie Freeman

Another upside pick even though I will be cheering against him. I think he is startable from day 1 with the potential to be dropped or a steal.

22.3 Miguel Tejada

Having 2 old shortstops is better than having 1 right?

23.11 Will Venable

Even cheaper steals. If he can hit for average too it will work out well.

24.3 Matt Joyce

More upside.

25.11 JA Happ

Miss him even if we did get Oswalt. Except to see him on the waiver wire soon though.

Some of my pre-season juggling is definitely paying off. I dropped mayberry for ordonez and immediately dropped him for Alex Gordon. Basically after getting my hopes up for gordon the past 2 seasons I couldn't bear to let somebody else get a good season from him so I bit the bullet and grabbed him. Happy I did.

April 6 I dropped thome for bloomquist. Got in early and still riding the train. Also nabbed sam fuld.

As a result I've got a decision to make every day there is a full slate of games. Theriot usually ends up on the bench (until bloomquist cools off at least) and I get to decide if quentin, morrison, fuld, choo, victorino or gordon rides my bench. So far I've been lucky in my guesses most days.

I'm just waiting for the wheels to come off right now, but enjoying the ride while I can. I just don't see how I can sustain some of my categories at these rates and suspect when production falls its going to hit a brick wall and slide off a cliff.

I'm running a 13 in ERA. Norfolk Neptunes is at 12 but there is a .33 difference in our ERAs. 13 points in WHIP but a .09 lead over ksoze who is at 12 points.

On the hitting side, I'm at a .480 slg the next closest is 'only' .465 (and that gap has narrowed as I was at like .496 over the weekend). OBP I'm at .377 vs the 2nd place who is at .355 for a .022 lead.

Get ready, when my wheels come off, its going to hurt. I still think I'll be competing for 1st at the end of the year but looking back over prior leagues, I'd be 1st by a large margin in every one of those categories. I just don't see how its sustainable (but I'm sure hoping I do just that!!).

On a completely random note as I was checking over prior leagues I looked at some of my old rosters. I don't even know the names of some of those guys from early 2000's. Then I see some rosters that are just loaded with names of guys I'm still drafting! Its a hoot looking at the old archives on yahoo.

Khahan - I'm with you, I knew I'd be ok with pitching, could use some more saves, but I was happy with my starters. I expected to struggle early in power categories and overall I'm ok, Morales on the Bench still is hurting me, especially with Smoak being on leave right now.

I think I can sustain the pitching categories, I'd like to move some of my starters for a saves guy and some RBIs. I guess I can always wait for Morales to come back.

But it looks like the drop may have started, both of us lost 3.5+ points yesterday!

38 Innings over isn't all that much, though I am under the cap. I basically have all my sstarters go in 2 days and gain 5-7 points in K's, then over the next 3-4 days I lose all those points.
Volquez has been wracking up K's, but otherwise has been disappointing. Colby Lewis is just a trainwreck this year.

I'm going to just use this thread to bump and allow members of the AA league to post their end of season recaps. I have a feeling we won't have enough to justify putting a separate thread up.

----

Khahan's Killers

Projected myself as a very competitive team and feel I lived up to that. Despite that and finishing 2nd, I feel disappointed at the end of the season. I feel a lot like my Red Sox. I was the dominant team for almost the whole season at one time having a 20 point lead!! But some very determined managers kept chipping away and 2 slumps (1 right after the all-star break and 1 here in September) really hurt.

As far as drafting goes, my worst pick was R3 - Shin-shoo Choo. Yeah, I could have taken Josh Hamilton there. Few more points in slg/obp and maybe a boost in runs/rbi's enough to make me look for ways to catch the person ahead of me (as it was, they had such a huge lead I didn't see the point).

Best picks - morrison (r14) was strong thru out the season. David Freese (r15) was more than serviceable. He was a solid contributor and a late round pick.

Then I had 2 awesome FA pick ups. The first was Alex Gordon. Almost made him my last round pick but grabbed him like 2 days after the draft. The other was Michael Morse who I have NO idea how I got off the FA list when I did (May 27) and Johnny Cueto. I also just had a knack this year for pickingup the hot player and dropping him at the right time.

who is ksoze?

Since about the end of May my team was consistently in the top 5 of the league standings, though typically 20 - 25 points or so out of first. Around the end of June I picked up about 10 of those points and gradually moved into contention with Khahan and had Murderer's Row breathing down my neck. In the middle of August my points dipped a bit, Khahan's jumped at the same time to give him a +/- 15 point lead and I figured I'd be destined to spend another season in the RIBC minors. Gradually, however, I started picking up points as Khahan dropped back.

It wasn't until this last Monday prior to the end of the season that I realized I had a much better shot to win the league than I'd imagined. Khahan and I finished the day tied for first and, low and behold, after a 23 innings pitched day for my team I had just 4 innings left before I'd pass my season allotment. My team had been high on innings all year so for the last couple of months I'd been really nitpicking my starters and holding them back from bad match ups, trying to bring the innings down. Now I realized that I had an opportunity to pick up at least a couple of points, maybe more, on the last day of the season... by overloading myself with starters. With no starters going on Tuesday, I picked up the 4 SP's I felt had the best match ups on Wednesday and I benched my entire pitching staff save for three relievers. I expected that I'd lose a point or two to Khahan who had starters going on Tuesday but was amazed to wake up on Wednesday to find myself 2 points in front. Khahan, after noticing my ploy, had benched a couple of his starters to keep himself from going over his innings limit and picked up 6 SP's himself for the final day.

W's, K's and saves were the three categories I figured I had a shot to increase in, and combined to pick up 3 points total in them (4 points overall in all categories) on the last day and Khahan's team only did +1.5. For me it was an extremely exciting final week, especially considering my Rays completed an amazing run to the postseason, culminating with one of the single best days of baseball ever... thanks for the help Boston!

In most fantasy leagues I normally do pretty well in the pitching categories, this league was not the exception. I ran away with the WHIP and ERA categories, and was third in K's. It's my hitting that normally suffers, but this season I took off with the SB's and was no lower than 5th in any other hitting category.

Draft - My worst picks were easily Phil Hughes in the 10th round and Manny in the 11th, I got less than nothing from both. In fact, "nothing" would have been an improvement on Manny's 1-17 with a .118 OPS for my team and Phil's 6 or so innings in my lineup. Worst of all, though, might go to 13th round pick Bobby Abreu who wasted 311 ab's in my lineup to the tune of a .759 OPS and a combined total of just 70 runs/RBI's.

As for best picks? I'll start with Asdrubal Cabrera who got me 85 runs, 89 RBI's, 17 steals and an .822 OPS (while in my lineup), was ranked as the 43rd most productive player in Yahoo and I drafted him with the 113rd pick.

Then there was the 191st pick of the draft, Lance Berkman, his .971 OPS and 84/83 R/RBI's and his #32 overall final ranking.

Finally, by far the best pick of the draft for me... and I never would have guessed this if I hadn't sorted "all players" a few minutes ago... Mike Adams, my 23rd round, 295th pick of the draft, had an overall rank of 79th and had 74 innings for me with a 1.47/0.79 ERA/Whip and 74 K's. And in the end his 4 wins were worth at least a few points to me, there were 5 teams within 4 wins of mine.

My best free agent pick ups were Brett Lawrie who gave me a .953 OPS in 150 AB's, Emilio Bonifacio who had 24 steals and a .371 OBP in my lineup, and Doug Fister who I picked up on August 29th and got me 4 wins, a 0.70 ERA and 0.52 WHIP in 5 starts.

Obviously I'm thrilled with my first ever RIBC League win, had a great time catching and then trading first and second places with Khahan over the last few months, I just wish it had been in a 16 team league and everyone had stayed active to the end.
