21.07 Dallas Bradon SP Oak
Just getting my SP5. Went to bed three picks away so set up a 3-player queue with Jurrjens and Cueto on top. Needed to set a third just in case and chose Bradon. So of course my top Q guys Cueto and Jurrjens were grabbed right before my slot and I get Bradon. Who knew that could happen in rd21? I put less thought into that choice but Bradon should service this spot fine. He's not a big K guy but his ERA the last two years was under 4 and should provide double digit wins. So curses to reebbertx and Nerfherders for messing up my queue, and stay off my mound!

22.10 Carlos Gomez OF Mil
I'm spoiled in my office's fantasy baseball league, I can target guys for the late rounds that actually make it back to me. Does not happen with this group of savvy and experienced fantasy baseballers. I was looking at potential breakout hitter Brandon Belt (20.25 by WG) and potential steals and runs player Peter Bourjos (22.04 by Seattle Zen) and potential WHIP/KIP pitcher Kenley Jansen (20.16 by Taxman) for the higher rounds, but I waited and they were swiped up. Reminds me of the old days out at the bar scene when you saw a girl you were interested in approaching, but waited to act, just to have some lame dude move in on her first. Applies here. If I wanted them, I should have grabbed them. So on to Plan D after some attractive late options are gone and instead and pick up what the cast of The Jersey Shore refers to as a "grenade", or in this case, a remaining available cheap steals option. So I chose Carlos Gomez over also available Julio Borbon. Grabbing a handful of steals at the cost of taking someone who never had an OBP .300 or better and who is primarily a singles hitter is quite frightening.

23.07 Takashi Saito RP Mil
Again filling out the pitching staff with a MR pitcher with better than a 1 strikeout per inning ratio who shuold be a positive influence on the ratios. My team's second reliever in his 40s. As the main set up guy for the Brewers, he could be next in line to close in the unlikely event Axford falters.

24.10 Russell Branyan 1B Az
This pick was made on 3/23 when Branyan is still a non listed player on the draftime.com player pool and a non roster invitee with the DBacks. He is having a good, make that great, spring and could win the everyday 1B job and even claim their clean up spot. Of course, by 3/25 contractually he could opt out of camp if not given a guaranteed 25-man roster spot and probably if not given the starting job. So, you can say this pick is a gamble. But hey, this is round 24. What are the odds that any of the rd24 drafted players stick with our fantasy teams a month into the season? Some folks will make 100 roster moves during the season so why not use a possible throw-away with my penultimate pick? The journeyman Branyan has slugged .490 or better 6 of his last 7 seasons and could be a source of RBI if given an everyday job. He would serve little to no value if he is a bench player, and absolutely no value if he does not make the team.

25.07 Carl Pavano SP Min
Do folks even read these rationales? I do. I read them all, all leagues. Carl Pavano was a frequent punchline during his injury riddled four years in NY, and when he left he was an effective pitcher once again. He's coming off a 17 win injury-free season. Speaking of riddles and punchlines: A grasshopper walks into a bar. The bartender says "Hey, we have a drink named after you". The grasshopper says "You have a drink named Irving"? The draft is over!

20.06 Juan Uribe 2B,3B,SS LAD
Uribe adds depth to my team at middle and corner infield. He is slated to start as 2B for the Dodgers. He puts up decent stats for a middle infielder.

21.11 Tyler Colvin OF CHC
In his rookie season in 2010, hit with some power and it was difficult for the Cubs to keep him out of the lineup. I expect his stats to improve this season. He is fighting for playing time again this season.

22.06 Todd Helton 1B COL
I only had one first baseman on my roster and I wanted some insurance in case Ryan Howard gets injured. Helton's power numbers are not what the used to be, but he has a good OBP. I expect his power numbers to be a little better this year. In 1994, Helton was the starting QB at Tennessee until he injured his knee and was replaced by backup Peyton Manning.

23.11 James McDonald SP PIT
McDonald is a young SP with some potential. Because he plays for the Pirates, he will be given an opportunity to succeed.

24.06 David Hernandez RP ARI
Hernandez is a setup man at Arizona who may have a chance to be the closer if Putz struggles or gets injured.

25.11 Ben Francisco OF PHI
Francisco will probably be the Phillies opening day starter in right field and should be get more playing time with Werth gone and Ibanez a year older. I wanted to choose Godzilla with this pick, but Da Bomb picked him at 25.03.

21.14 John Jaso, C, Tam

I buy a couple of fantasy baseball magazines each year, more to start the season off than because I pay much attention to their opinions, and the most important feature to me is the quality of their comments, with humour being considered a heavily weighted component thereof. For years, Fantasy Baseball Index was the first serious fantasy magazine to hit the newsstands in Canada, and though it isn't any more, I still pick it up. This short off-the-wall comment about Jaso is my favourite comment about anybody anywhere this season:

"Like so many rookie catchers, Jaso broke in as a frequent leadoff hitter for what appeared to be the AL's best team."

OBP is his skill, should bat leadoff.

22.03 Sam Demel, RP, Ari

I thought I should have a piece of the large market in potential replacements to my closer Putz if, or when, he breaks down. Demel strikes out a guy an inning and is a potential replacement despite the presence of Gutierrez, Hernandez, and whoever else is around. Marked as a closer of the future, control is his problem.

23.14 Milton Bradley, OF, Sea

Still has the talent, I believe, and one of these years will stay healthy and keep his head straight and turn in a mindbusting fluke year. If it's this year, I'd like a share of it.

24.03 Brent Morel, 3B, Chi

Preoccupied by the fact that A-Rod is likely to miss his 20 or so games this year and 3B is such a shallow position.

Probably would have been better off picking David Hernandez, but I think I thought he was gone already. Too many drafts, getting tired.

When A-Rod does go down I'll probably end up picking someone off the waiver wire anyway, after having dropped Morel. But his minor league stats suggest he can hit, so let's see how he starts off the season.

25.14 Wilton Lopez, RP, Hou

There's a whole week left for closers to walk off the field clutching their elbows before the season starts. Lyon isn't really good enough to close despite his contract, and Lopez seems as likely a replacement as any if he goes down.

21.05 Kyle Lohse SP STL
Lohse is having a good spring so I popped him in here. It was hard as he was a disaster for the Phillies a while back. He doesn’t even make the SP list for rotoball! He is post surgery by a year now and the Cards need SP help. We shall see what develops - he is projected as the #4 starter.

22.12 Alex Avila C DET
SInce I am currently planning to put Posey at 1B I needed a regular C. Perhaps I should have picked one earlier -- like at 18.12 where I could have had Arencibia or Yaddy or Suzuki. Basically it will come to who is better -- I Davis at 1B or Avila at C and I will flex Posey between C and 1B.

23.05 Jose Contreras RP PHL
Am losing interest here and have been busy and not thinking clearly. Needed a low ERA, WHIP guy and Contreras could provide that. I only have Broxton, Street and Jose as my RP. Clearly I will need to scour for more.

24.12 Rick Porcello SP DET
Porcello is currently slated as the #3 SP for DET. It is his third season and he finished last year strongly. Three of his four spring training outings have been very good. TIme will tell.

25.05 Maicer Izturis SS LAA
Maicer will get a lot of playing time at a lot of positions -- that is is value. He does not bring much to the table, although he should rebound from last year’s injuries. The plan is for him to lead off so he might grab 50+ runs?

Time to fill out the bench. I have three players I think would look great in Seattle Zen unis, role players who are team oriented and rah-rah guys: 22.4.340 Peter Borjous, Brad Hawpe, and Julio Borbon, in that order. Borjous has shown a touch of power in the past, if he can get on base at a .330 clip, I could see him steal 25 bases and slug over .400. That’s quite a value. I also noticed that he was one of just a couple of players who were drafted in RIBC before they were taken here, over 100 picks later. I also need back up outfielders because there is a good chance that Beltran and now Granderson will start the year on the bench.

I realize at the conclusion of the draft that we field four outfielders, not five, so I have overdrafted the position. I’m okay with that, outfield base stealers are a lot like closers, they are easy to deal to teams who are short in one particular category.

With Brad Hawpe off the board, I’m looking for upside and I’ve been reading rave reviews for 23.13.365 Mark Trubo, the slugging firstbase replacement for Kendrys, whose not only worried about losing playing time, hell, he should be worried about keeping his leg! I honestly don’t expect him to contribute at all this year and barring a trade, Trumbo will be the beneficiary of Kendrys’ misfortune.

There are some excellent picks made even this late. I like the risk/reward pick of Dice-K, I think Garrett Jones will get more at bats than is feared around the blogosphere, making Sanfordor’s pick a wise one. I would like Jim Thome a lot more if this was an ESPN league, where you could stick him into the lineup the same day. It’s going to be difficult to predict which games he will get DH duty before Gardy turns in the line-up card. Kerry Wood, Saito and McDonald were all on my queues, this is one tough league.

24.4.372 Julio Borbon is the classic post-hype sleeper who I believe lasted this long solely because Nolan Ryan has told him to “get his head out of his ass” this Spring Training out in the field. Let the record reflect that Mr. Borbon has responded with, “duly noted”. I’m not too afraid that the Rangers will give up on the speedster, he may lose a few April starts to David Murphy, but he will be their regular CF for most of the year. The guy is lightening fast, he will get his steals. And like I said earlier, if he goes on a hot streak and steals 10 bases in two weeks, the market will be all ears.

Wow, this didn’t happen often, but the top guy on my queue came back to me 25 picks later. 25.13.397 Clayton Richards is clearly undervalued. People mention that he is a safer bet at home than on the road, but if you looked closely at his 2010 season, it was Coors Field that was his downfall. Remove the three Coors starts and his ERA comes down to 3.24 for the year. I’ll take that! His arm was sore this spring, I’m not concerned about that, he’ll be fine. I would like to see him show more of the great control he flashed in the minors, then he will be a real steal!

21.06 Kurt Suzuki C OAK
Another Suzuki on my team. Not the best option with terrible OBP in this format, but it is good to have him as a backup to Posada.
The rest of the draft are sleeper SP picks to round out the staff. Obviously, I don't expect all of them to work out... actually, I would be happy if just one or two of them put together a good season.
22.11 Derek Holland SP TEX
Expecting 10 W's with sub 4.00 ERA and sub 1.25 WHIP with strong K's ratio.
23.06 Daisuke Matsuzaka SP BOS
Projected 5th starter for the Red Sox. Should have no problem getting W's... maybe he can finally put together a good season with all the pressure taken off him (with not much expectation)
24.11 Wade Davis SP TAM
Poor spring, but expecting 10+ W's with sub 4.00 ERA and sub 1.25 WHIP.
25.06 Brian Duensing RP MIN
Taking a flyer on the strong spring.

21.09 Jair Jurrjens, SP ATL
I had this round pegged for my last SP. He didn't need to be a K machine. Just be good, get wins, and not blow up the ratios. Jurrjens fits the bill on all counts. He was hurt last year, so I expect a bounceback season for him. Lowe was my next choice here, and was still available. I would have been happy either way.

22.08 Jim Thome, UT MIN
I needed one last hitter to fill out the starting spots, but I wanted someone who would help with the ratios. Thome was excellent last year in a limited role, and if he is even close to that production, I don't really care if he gets only 350 AB's, he will help my team. I will basically just put him in the UT slot and let him do his thing.

23.09 Jordan Walden, RP ANA
At this point my cheat sheet had been completely drained and while Walden was on my RP list for this pick, he was way down the list. The main reason why he was on my list is because he has a chance to close for the Angels this season. I am hoping his numbers are good even if he doesn't get that chance.

24.08 Alberto Callaspo, 3B ANA
At this point my cheat sheet was useless as every player was gone. I knew I needed a backup for MI/CI, and Callaspo was one I knew had a good chance to start, and was a decent player a couple years back. So eh, why not? It's the 24th round.

25.09 Eric O'Flaherty, RP ATL
At this point I was just grasping for any players I could think of. If I had had more than 10 minutes (internet on the cruise was 75 cents per minute - ouch!) I probably could have come up with someone with more upside. he will be adequate until I feel I have to take some other FA. I probably won't need the extra RP when Aardsma returns.

So I think I had a pretty good draft. I really think my best picks were in the 11-15 rounds, with Roberts, Walker, Nolasco, Zimmermann, Aardsma. If those guys pan out, I am set up pretty good. My first three picks were abit frustrating - in the other AAA league I could have had Braun, Zimmerman, Uggla. Still, I can't be too sad about having Braun, Bautista, and Upton, though Bautista carries alot more risk than I would have liked in a second rounder.

21.03 Michael Pineada, SP, Sea

Great prospect who had a great spring. Forced his way onto the big league roster and is well worth a flyer at this spot.

22.14 Brett Wallace, 1B, Hou

Has had a good spring and is locked into the 1B job in Houston. Will see how he does and he has the potential to be a starter on my team with Morales out.

23.03 Justin Duchscherer, SP, Bal

Ehhh. Pitches well when he's healthy but it's hard to pitch well you're never healthy. I'll see what his return timetable is but he will probably be dropped before then.

24.14 Clint Barmes, SS, Hou

Looked at the available MIs for a backup spot on my team. He had just under an .800 OPS a couple years ago and was set to bat 2nd for the Astros. Since this pick Barmes fractured his hand and is now a FA in this league.

25.03 Hideki Matsui, OF, Oak

Solid, professional hitter who can probably be a starter in this league but slipped to the 25th round here.

These get harder and harder as we go along, especially when you wait until the last minute.

21.07 Jack Cust OF Sea. Cust is the everyday DH for the Mariners and Rotowire projects an OPS of .807, in the 60's for runs and RBI's, and get this, 1 SB. Round 21, decent value. 22.10 Grant Balfour, RP, Oak, see pick 19.07, set up guys. Bailey starts on the DL, maybe some extra saves come my way

Round 23 was time to gamble on 23.07 Garrett Jones OF Pit. Jones came out of the gate with a vengeance last year before cooling off, and now seemingly is in a platoon situation. He might wind up as waiver fodder....

Storen has struggled this spring , and word is " closer by committee " for the Nationals. One of the committee members is 24.10 Sean Burnett RP Was. Great Ratios, better than a K an inning is what Sean should give me, and if he can luck into some saves, all the better..

Finally the end. 25.07 Alex Gonzalez SS Atl. Strange trade by the Braves last year, and Alex struggled in the NL, no where near the hitter he had become in Toronto, but heck, its the last round and he's insurance for my MI types

21.12 Octavio Dotel (RP, TOR)
Much like Charlie Sheen chasing hookers and seven-gram rocks … I need a fix for more saves. Maybe former closer Dotel will get me some. But the first time he has a game with a WHIP of 6+ (and I know there will be one) … I’ll probably leave him in the gutter.

22.05 Juan Rivera (OF, TOR) -
One of my planned starting OFers has starting missing games, and the start of the season is now in doubt … so I need a new 4th outfielder. It looks like Rivera should get full-time ABs, either as OF or DH. It seems I have this guy in a league every year. He never really sucks enough to deserve benching, and has occasional bursts of excellence. Hopefully he’ll get most of his 20ish HRs while a starter for me.

23.12 Kevin Jepson (RP, ANA) -
Much like two rounds ago, I need a fix. Current Angels closer (Rodney) is always a candidate for implosion. Maybe Jepson will still be on my roster on the day that Rodney is un-named closer.

24.05 Orlando Hudson (2B, SD) -
At the age of 33, the O-Dog is seeing those skills deteriorate, and he’s moved to a pitchers park. Not much upside, so I’m glad he’s only a backup for me.

25.12 Jon Niese (SP, NY) -
Why did I draft this guy? I don’t need any more SPs. But he’s definitely too good to be available late in the 25th round. Young kid. Pretty decent Spring stats. The #2 Mets starting pitcher. Probably more ROI than most of the other names still in my queue.
