0 Subject: Gurupie 20 2011 Supplemental Draft Discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Mar 18, 2011, 17:44

The Supplemental Draft is comprised of 14 rounds. The draft will be in inverse order of finish and will not snake. Prospects have been temporarily added to the respective teams as keepers, so they will not be drafted.

As a reminder, you may not exceed 23 players (prospects with salaries excluded). You may not drop a player (or add a non-drafted player if you are short) until waivers have been turned on. You may trade for extra picks and you may trade your excess picks as long as it is done before that pick is up and automatically skipped.

We will use Draftime for this draft. All keepers and almost all prospects have been allocated to teams in draftime, so there should be no inadvertent duplications.

There will be a per pick time limit of 3 (Three) hours and a cumulative (c) draft clock of 12 hours. This means that your total time you take to draft each round will continue to accrue. If you hit 12 hrs. you may be skipped automatically. If you are skipped due to a pick or c clock, you may still post your selection at any time. Once you have been skipped, you will continue to be skipped until you are caught up. Note the the cumulative clock is not automatically administered by draftime, but the commissioner may skip your pick if you have exceeded the cumulative time limit.

After you make your pick at Draftime, please go straight to ESPN and pick up your player (remember the player must be able to be picked up in the ESPN database). That way the teams behind you will know all the players who are available to be drafted. Hopefully, draftime can automatically provide email notices to managers.

The clock will be suspended between midnight and 8 a.m. ET. You may pick during this time and you will not be charged for any time that accrues. If the pick before you is made at 10 p.m. and you have three hours or more on your c clock, your pick won't expire until 9 a.m. However if you make your selection between 12-8 a.m. you will only be charged two hours.

Please be prepared and know when it is your turn to pick. Picking in a timely manner will allow the draft to go quicker and may prevent the commishs from having to reduce the time limits. Note that draftime does allow picks to automatically be made from your queue, and the queue may be specific for a given pick.

Please let us know if you need assistance or have special circumstances that may affect your drafting and we will try to accomodate you the best we can. Please review our league rules via our ESPN site.

The draft will be activated momentarily, and picks may start immediately – although the clock will not start until 2pm ET on Sunday, March 20. The early activation will allow everyone to set queues in advance as needed, and to get a head start on the draft.

You may use this thread for any draft discussion, including questions on Draftime, and comments on potential availability issues, queues, etc.

Those with restricted access to draftime.com may be able to track the draft using this URL:
http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/kpeek.pl?28

The draft grid appears at the top, followed by a sequential list of picks. Note that all keepers have a pick sequence of 0.00

If anyone notices an error in keeper allocations or in the draft pick order, please speak up ASAP!

Zip it Toral and pick, will you?

judy - that is your prerogative. However, if you go to ESPN, you can sort through the available players there by position, including seeing projected stats, player cards, etc. It might be easier than you think to sort through players for Round 1 at least.

I would like to emphasize a particular point in Guru's opening post:

After you make your pick at Draftime, please go straight to ESPN and pick up your player (remember the player must be able to be picked up in the ESPN database). That way the teams behind you will know all the players who are available to be drafted.

This is important! If you are drafting remotely, or via queue on Draftime, obviously you can't rush over to ESPN and pick your up your player.....but when you do get online, please check to see whether or not a Commish has done it for you. We will try to keep up, but can't guarantee it.

NOTE: Draftime is the official draft site, so it is up to YOU to realize that a player who shows as available on ESPN might have already been drafted on Draftime. ESPN should be there as a tool for available players....but it is not "gospel" on the subject.

Thanx for making it easy, Species. I'll pick at the official starting time, and not a moment before.

And go to work-to-rule: no giving or taking queues, no making it easy for the commishes in any way.

Species...I don't like the idea of the draft starting on a Sunday. Admittedly, I should have mentioned it before.

The energy I put in the past into trying to make this draft work (giving and taking queues, etc.)...I will put into your suggestion of "stopping drinking". Since I am not drinking at all, that will not be very hard.

Good luck to you with your draft.

I have to admit Toral....you have me completely discombobulated as to whether you feel real animosity or if you are showing real humor. If you'd like to call me an a-hole, please do so more clearly. Please forgive my sarcastic drinking comment.....but you were not making sense to me, hence my discombobulation.

I had nothing to do with starting the draft on Sunday. If you have a true complaint, please take it up with Ref.

Thank you for all of your efforts in the past. With Draftime now doing most of the work for us in terms of queues and email notices - including the "it's 2 picks before your pick" feature (which eliminates the need to email the next three) - I am hopeful that this draft will run smoothly.

Good luck in your draft as well. I'm away for the rest of the evening.

By the way, ESPN Fantasy Baseball is available on your phone at http://espn.mobi and via free iPhone and Droid apps. These should allow you to pick up players even when you're not near a computer. Oh, and they were built by two members of the RotoGuru community. If you think you can do better please email me immediately.

I feel no animosity at all toward anyone in this league. Maybe I just should have said "I'll pick when I feel like picking."

I am confused as to who the commissioners are now. Ref is the putative boss, Species sets up a scheme where he wins easily, throws people out and insults people who ask questions, Guru sets the mechanics up with great professionalism.

Just a simple, non-judgmental note. Species suggests that if I have a beef with starting on a Sunday, take it up with Ref. I asked a few days ago when the official draft started, and got an answer from Guru. I'm sure that if I pressed Guru, he would say that the starting day wasn't his decision. It's a non-responsibility regime.

Species:

Let us hope so. E-mailing 3 people was a real pain. (Although I had it down to a science. Set the e-mails up before your pick came up...then do the pick, hit the send button, and pick up the player on CBS)

So now that we're going to go so fast can Commissioner Species, or "Fecies" as Twarp used to call him, stop pushing people to pick before the draft has started? We know he's fixed the league well already with his scams involving the prospect rules...so why would a supposed commissioner tell one to
Zip it Toral and pick, will you?
Maybe it's you that need to stop before that last drink, Species. Although in your case I think you were probably just intoxicated by your own manifest greatness.

I'll admit, I am drinking, and as I read this thread, I thought you were too. The comment about not starting a draft on the sabbath was pretty funny - reminiscent of 'I don't roll on Shabbos', but if serious is a bit strange. Do you also not set your lineups for football games on Sunday?

I'd prefer we do as much as possible on these drafts during the weekends, as I'm too busy during the work week to do all the research that I'd like.

SY - of course I set my football lineups on Sunday; that's when they play the games! But the setting of the date to start the draft was a voluntary decision. It could have been done any day of the week.

I admit that Species' pushing me to pick early bothered me more than the Sunday start. I will be back from Church on Sunday by 1 P.M.

Perhaps there have been other things bothering me as well. Look for a big announcement tomorrow.

Toral - looking back, I'm concerned that perhaps you took offense to my reference to the Canadian National Anthem in the previous thread. I absolutely meant no disrespect. If you were offended by that, I sincerely apologize.

When you made several posts about taking your time in making the 1st pick, I sincerely thought you were just busting my chops and just joking about it. My "Zip it" comment was absolutely in humor in response. If you felt I was serious and trying to exert some sort of Commissioner's holier-than-thou power, I apologize. That wasn't my intent. Regardless, my comment was rude and I'm sorry.

Subsequent comments were made out of immature anger. I'm sorry.

Speaking simply as one of 20 managers in this league, I would like to ask for a truce and let's put the focus of this thread back on the draft.

My prospect Casey Kelly is up for trade. I need either picks or pitching....particularly a closer. Kelly was the key cog in the Padres/Red Sox trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. Kelly was ranked the 31st overall prospect by Baseball America, and the 19th overall prospect by ESPN's Keith Law:
====================================
Kelly's season didn't match his hype, although he spent a good chunk of the year pitching with a badly cracked fingernail on his right hand that caused him trouble into the fall. Kelly's velocity was sound, 89-94, with good arm speed on his changeup and a sharp curveball with excellent depth. His command, when his finger is intact, is well above-average and has been so since he was in high school. He was a solid defensive shortstop who had a long way to go with the bat, and was also a star quarterback in high school. He's taken that fielding ability and athleticism to the mound, with an easy delivery he repeats extremely well.

The 2010 season was Kelly's first as a full-time pitcher, and he'll probably return to Double-A to a great pitchers' park in San Antonio before the Padres slide him up to the hitters' environment in Tucson. If he never adds another mile an hour to his fastball, he'll still likely pitch as a solid No. 2 behind Mat Latos for many years, with a chance to be better than that if he picks up a little velocity.
===================================
Considering at leats 6 or 7 of Law's top 20 prospects graduate to the majors, you are looking at a top 10-15 prospect by mid-year. Considering a team is not guaranteed getting a top 10-15 prospect via a prospect pick, this could be a good investment for a team.

Age and keeper quality of any players I get back are immaterial.

Hey guys, have access again. A huge (continued) thanks to Guru.

Draft: We do not pick well on Fri and Sat. We've had several drafts start on Sunday--esp Hoops. Moved it from our usual starting time of Noon ET to 2ET for those west coasters who might be in church in the morning. There were no comments or suggestions to move it to any other time so we went with it. Moving it to Monday and we might not get done in time since the season is starting 4 days earlier and we are starting less than two days earlier.

Anyone know if it's possible to export to an XLS file the free agents in our league? Or even how to display all of the players on one page so I can copy to a txt file then import to xls?

I don't have access to the the ESPN league site from work and need to track the players using draftime.com (that's not YET blocked), but with some sort of stat aspect so I can sort on different attributes.

Also, since I don't have access to ESPN from work, I may be slow in picking my players up after drafting them. Any commish should feel free to do it for me, but I certainly don't expect it. I just can't assure anyone I'll be able to pick them up as quickly as I can draft since I have access to draftime but not ESPN fantasy.

Thanks for the help and happy drafting!!!

To all managers - Draftime no longer allows the commish to make a pick for you unless you have either authorized the commish as a DP, or else made your queue available.

If you think you might have access limitations and need to submit your pick via email (or by posting at this forum), then please designate me as a DP. Otherwise, we might get stuck.

Correction - if your queue is empty, the commish can still pick for you.

But if you have names in your queue, the commish cannot pick unless you make it available.

Nice to know my thoughts on my round 3 pick were in the right place in terms of value. I narrowed my choices down to either a "possible closer" (amongst a myriad of wanna-bes) and either Jackson or Wells. I chose the reliever, and Jackson/Wells were the next two picks.

Overall, as usual, the draft proceeds relatively smoothly, and for the most part with rock-solid picks. I can only think of a couple of times that I've seen a pick and said "Really? That's early". Otherwise, it's more like "dammit".

Thanks Guru for the draft pick emails. Work like a charm and a great way to update remotely in particular.

One email or text message is sent for each pick. If your text message plan is not unlimited, be aware that we have 215 picks remaining and these will be out-of-network messages.

If you want to be included, please send me your email address and/or cell phone number and cell carrier.

Some email providers will not accept these server-generated messages. Yahoo addresses are the most notable, so there is no point in requesting an email sent to a yahoo.com address.

Guru, how often are you polling/sending? I get a lot at one time occasionally. I know queues can cause that, but...

Also, any chance of using separate email addresses in the "from" part? My phone groups them all together so I have to pay close attention to which league it's in.

Oh, and they're spectacular, in case I didn't already say that.

[56] wait - each league is already using a league-specific "from" address. What do you mean by "any chance of using separate email addresses in the "from" part?" Do you want a unique "from" address for every single pick?

Thanx, Cliff. So Dale should be getting the notifications and be ready to go. And as we all have been waiting for 3 hours, he should be ready to draft.

So...where is he?

And, checking in...he has picked, and HE STOLE MY PICK the one pick left in my queue. Serves me right, I guess.

Now I'm the one who needs to find a new pick. but the point is still valid.

I'm not sure this was a 'Matthew Berry Approved' method of drafting or not, but it's how I made my last pick ...

I'm sitting with two 9 year-old boys after swim practice (I'm the coach), when my turn comes up, and all I have is my phone. We look at the players on my queue list, when they started singing "James McDonald Had a Farm". "Take him!" they say. So I do.

I could have taken the 30 minutes to get home and look at some projections, but I pride myself on using very little time in these G20 drafts. So off to the Farm I go!

Damn R9. I know you ditched a lot of picks, but that's pretty insane. Five in the 14th and three in the 13th. One thing though - why Luis Castillo and Melvin Mora? If you're playing for the future, I can't imagine those two are going to be part of the next R9 championship team? Love some of the others - Trumbo, Conger, Jansen.

Planned on doing a mini-rebuild last season and may end up having to do that this season, but will see what we have first. Having Roberts on my team all last season and then not keep him stinks, but trying to do what will make my team more competitive.

Also, in closing, here were my best picks:

1. Neil Walker. I've been "chasing" Utley in this league for years, but I think I just found my second baseman for the next ten years.

2. Brandon Belt. Is great.

3. Daric Barton. He'll lead the AL in walks this year, with an OBP over .400. Probably should have been kept.

4. Matt Dominguez. With my last pick, he was the best prospect not already on a roster or as a keeper. He should come up mid-year like gangbusters.

5. Wilson Ramos-Ryan Hanigan. Taking these guys back to back was a real coup. All of a sudden, catching is a strength.

We need to make sure everyone has picked up all of their draft picks. You should have 23 players plus your prospects. I will continue to look through things to see if we missed anyone, but ultimately it is up to you.

Guru has set up a prospect alert system. Every hour, the system checks on recent player adds, and compares the names against the prospect list. If a match is found, an email alert is sent to the commishs. As great as this is and as much as we all appreciate this, picking up a prospect can still hurt you. By nuking this year's draft trades, the League Page Message is a lot shorter--but it is still quite long. Still, all prospects are listed there. It isn't convenient and all of us are likely to screw up, it is the best we can do at this point. Might need to check any youngsters against that list if you are serious about picking one up.

We will need to dump everyone's prospects and reset the rules back to our normal configuration. No one will be able to pick up any players until waivers are turned on (outside of their drafted players). My guess is that waivers will be turned on either Sunday or Monday so everyone gets a fair shot at a claim. Season starts Thursday.

We will continue to use this forum until waivers are turned on.

bh, surely there were better prospects than Dominguez left. Maybe he'll develop into an above average mlb hitter in 2-3 years but there's nothing in his numbers that show him anything more than an average 3b hitter. I guess you are still "rebuilding". IMO, you are really hurting your chances this year to try to out prospect a true rebuilding team like R9.

I essentially need to "call up" Carlos Santana now since he'll be on my opening day roster. So I dropped Domonic, thats fine... so should I just drop someone other than Santana to get back to the player limit? or do i need to drop Santana and then you'll manually add him back? I'll just drop Kazmir if so.

I don't think waivers can be applied to undrafted players.

However, more importantly, I can't seem to figure out how to turn on waivers at all. According to the ESPN "locktimes" page, waiver settings can be changed at any time. But the buttons to do that seem to be locked out - unless I'm missing something.

113: From the help box:

Waivers
If you choose this setting, players will be marked as 'On Waivers' after the draft or after being dropped from a team's roster. A player placed on waivers will remain on waivers for a period of time (1-4 days), during which all teams will have the opportunity to make waiver claims on that player. Then, the player will be awarded to the team with the highest waiver priority that made a claim, and the team will move to the end of the waiver order.

Might need to "trick" it to say the draft is now over. Definitely don't want to do a first come-first serve on final cuts and injuries/final starters, etc. being announced in the next couple days. Not sure if I can test it without starting waivers and being unable to turn them off and restart. I'll keep looking.

101, 114: Agreed, also couldn't have done it w/o the help of the league. Great job all!

OK, the only way to reset the league's settings to remove the prospects was to hit reset. When I did that it took us back to pre-keepers. I don't get this at all. But even had I known it would do this to us--we had no choice. Now we are going to have to redo our entire roster save for our keepers.

I apologize, but I am going to give everyone LM powers again if you can help. In the future, we're not going to be able to have our prospects on our team prior to the draft. That is just begging for issues.

As soon as we can get the teams loaded, we will attempt to get waivers set up. I have them in the setting snow I think I just have to put start draft once our teams are all right again. I'd kind of like to simply drop all players and pick them all up again. What a mess.

I had to start the draft and it seemed to work to cut it down to 9. Please check to make sure you have the right keepers and then add your team VIA the LM feature only.

WAIVERS have been started and the order has been set. Now we have to enter the players on the teams before people start making claims. Let's stay in this forum until all 20 teams are done and set properly. Please post after you have your team set and all 23 players are accurate. The only team who is different from the draft is GO who called up Santana and dropped Kazmir. Remember to use the back button. Your team may already be done by someone else, but please post that it is accurate.

Actually, use drafttime, and click on the name of the manager you are adding players to. It will list the players for that team. If I had thought of that I could have added all the players at once for each team and been done a lot quicker.

Mine are in as waivers for March 29 at 3 am -- that's what happened when I used the add player feature.
(Dempster was missing as a K, but I added him in)

the roster includes prospects -- do I drop them at some point?

Judy how does your roster include prospects when you only have 23 spots? Just cancel all of your waiver claims and I will do your tam for you.

Did mjd. Was going to do Nerfherders, but his keepers are messed up. No Colby Lewis or Bard, and Revere/Chapman are prospect roster guys I believe.

I did nerf and Pete too. Most all of the keepers are messed up because it just took the first 9 Keepers listed and we had our 9 keepers plus our prospects kept.

I have been comparing the keepers to those listed in our Keeper list and then dropping the prospects. Adding the keepers. Then going down the list in drafttime.

Not seeing dropped players on the transaction list too often. Most will have at least one player to drop. I'm going to keep plugging away at these with you guys and we can try and check things out when we are done. Tosh and jaydog are done.

It takes a min at times to figure out the owner with the team name, but Darky's was easy.

Species is done. So we have them all entered. Time to check for errors and omissions. You should all go in and take a look at your rosters. Perhaps put the starters in, etc. It will be a headache if one of your players is claimed off waivers or prospects are claimed, etc. Thanks for the assist on picking up the players. Takes longer when you have to get the keepers right before adding.

Taking a look through ESPN available players, I only found one mistake that jumped out at me and I made it. Man the prospects are going to be so hard to lay off of!!! There could be other errors that aren't so obvious simply looking through available players.

Waivers are on and will run overnight. Make sure if you made claims, those players are available to claim (non-prospects, etc.). I am not even sure if we can edit waiver wire order after the initial setting, so be smart.

I will leave LM powers on everyone through today. Hopefully everything is right.

Waivers have been turned on so this signals the end of the draft time and starts our season. So we will head back to our regular season thread.

Thanks again for a great draft and the help and patience working with us and our new site.

My team looks good (well...I have all the players I should, anyway). Thanks for picking up all of my guys. It's definitely going to hurt not having access to ESPN from my work. That was one good thing about the CBS site...with the URL starting w/ gurupie20 it made it past my work filters. Not so much with ESPN.

I'm happy baseball is back.
