Nice. Kimbrel pitches the 9th for the save after Venters pitches the 8th. Just what I wanted to see.

maybe Venters and Kimbrel will take turns... (I have Venters in G20)

I emailed Astade about the lineup but I see that he did not set one for Thursday... had some good stats too...

I wonder, if I benched all of my pitchers for the rest of the season, obviously my wins/saves/ks would suffer, but my stellar ERA/WHIP of 20.25 and a 6.75 would at least garner me a point or two. Right?

I noticed something different in the standings today regarding WHIP. Red Scorpions and I both have the same WHIP when rounded to 1.06. But the standing page scored me a 13 and Scorpions a 12. In past seasons we'd both get 12.5. Has the scoring rule change?

It looks like Yahoo breaks ties for WHIP now. If you notice, there is a * next to both numbers, and if you mouse over them, you get the actual WHIP to several digits. I've been waiting years for Yahoo to do this. Excellent!

I wonder if they will also do this for OBP, SLG and ERA

Probably should have kept Murphy and stopped waiting for Cody Ross to come off the DL...but I have a lot of OF...

I jumped up a few places this week too, but it is still tight in the middle the standing are very volatile.

I love the new feature in the standings that Yahoo launched in the middle of last season where we can look at the 'graph view' so we can see our gains (and losses) over different time periods in not only the standings points, but any of our rotisserie categories by stat or points.

I've got to brag about this - my home league team's pitching staff has put together an April unlike anything I've seen. Yes, it certainly shallower than a RIBC, 13 teams, 1000 IP limit, blah, blah...

With Josh Johnson set for a start tonight against the Reds, here is my April

217 1/3 IP, 20 wins, 15 saves, 1.86 ERA, .098 WHIP, 207 K's.

My staff consists of Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and Greg Maddox :)

Actually it's Jered Weaver, Josh Johnson, Shawn Marcum, Trever Cahill, and Tommy Hanson.

An ERA below two and a WHIP below one?! I may have just jinxed Johnson's start tonight. Think I'll trade some of these arms for a bat or two.

219 IP
9 W
20 SV (the only bright spot but contreras is on the DL)
157 K
5.10 ERA (at the bottom by far...)
1.44 WHIP (again at the bottom)

Mostly due to Dempster and Bumgarner...

It is gonna be really hard to climb outta this hole...

I am finding myself watching A LOT more NBA playoffs than baseball this month. My father told me that I should have become an oddsmaker and graduated from UNLV and I wonder if he wasn't right, I really would love to spend all my time watching the NBA or NFL. I ended up disappointing him by becoming an attorney instead ;)

I was wondering how much baseball does everyone in this league watch, not Baseball Tonight but actual games? I have the most basic cable and I'm in the Mariners market so I barely get anything worth watching. The number of starting pitchers who I have never seen throw is rather large. Adding to the problem is the fact that we have but one television in our house and my wife is from Poland and REALLY does not understand baseball's appeal, so even if there is a compelling game on, I will get to watch a few innings before she grabs the remote in between innings and flips it to TLC or something. Even if I am home alone, I almost never watch an entire game start to finish, the truth is baseball games ARE too long. Outside of the playoffs or a no hitter in progress, I generally will lose interest about two and a half hours in, oooh, they are bringing in the LOOGY in a 7-1 game in the seventh! I'm not going to wait for that bum to warm up.

I'm afraid that one advantage I have late in the season will not be there for me this year. I don't play fantasy football and I may be the only one in this league that doesn't. There are only so many hours in the day and all y'all generally turn your focus to the NFL come August. I don't think there will be an NFL this year, October by the earliest. Baseball will be all you have. Damn you stupid owners.

I work during the week so watching games isn't really an option... sometimes I'll catch the highlights on Sportscenter/Baseball Tonight.

On the weekends, I'll watch games in the afternoon, but that usually leads to a nap with the game on in the background ;)

It was my favorite sport during my youth and I thought fantasy baseball would keep me hooked, but only on a very limited basis.

Phillies phan since the age of about 5 -- I use TIVO to record the games and thus can watch a game in about 40 minutes of taped time -- with pauses and fast forwards through commercials to do errands (dinner, lessons plans, feeding the cats, water the garden, etc) during that time. It's the only way to watch such a leisurely game. I am always doing something else while watching -- reading a mag or newspaper -- I can also be away from the whole game and see it in about the same time as a regular TV show when I get home, with slowdowns for the good plays, hits and other excitement that might unfold.

How much baseball do I watch? You mean other than the 25-30 games I attend in person each season - approx 20 @ Yankee Stadium, a couple of Mets and Phillies home games each every year, and my annual Fenway and Camden Yards visit? Nothing beats the ballpark.

Both my wife and daughter go to bed around 9PM so after that I'll pretty much have the end of the Yankee game on the tube weekday nights, flipping to Red Sox on NESN or the Rays games during the commercials. The game on tv never has my full attention, I am usually reading or web surfing while the game is on. I have the DirecTV Extra Innings (the 8 screen MLB Game Mix channel rules!). Weekends not much baseball watching.

Baseball is my only fantasy sport, and just have 2 teams. I play in one of the RIBC leagues and am in a 12 team less competitive intra-office league.

I am a Braves fan and I became one because of the one thing that created most Braves fans in the last 30 years - TBS. I would watch every game I was home for back in those days, but since TBS is no more (for Braves) I catch whatever Braves I can get on ESPN, MLB Network, and sometimes streamed for free online. I haven't gone so far as to pay for games because then I would feel compelled to watch EVERY game, and my fiance would probably not appreciate that. I also try to see live every game they come to Colorado for.

But Ive never really watched any baseball except for Braves. When the Braves are out of the playoffs I stop watching except for a few innings of the world series maybe.

One of the problems with seeing the Phillies live is the huge traffic issue. All the games are sell outs plus standing room.
The last time we went we lazily walked out to the car, but there was so much traffic that we did not even start the engine for an hour and a half. That is just too much time to waste. CB Park is gorgeous though.

I used to attend 15-20 Mariner games a season, but only make 4-5 now. Mostly bobblehead nights. I'll attend 15-20 Tacoma Rainiers (AAA) games this season.

On TV, I watch maybe 120 Mariner games, Yankee/RedSox games, and maybe 10 other games during the regular season. Yeah ... not a lot of NL viewing for me.

Yep, watched the first two plus hours of the Yankees/Red Sox game, wife and kid came home in the seventh, Josh Beckett gets pulled and that's the end of the game for me :) Josh was dealing! I told you he had bounce-backability, it's a known skill.

Reading your post, Nerf, made me think back to 1989 when I was a twenty year old touring Idaho, Wyoming, SD, Colo, and NM in a VW bus with a fake ID. I remember noticing how many Atlanta Braves posters and pennants and such decorating stores and bars. At first I was "Wha?" because my memory of the Atlanta Braves was all Glenn Mother Hubbard and ugly powder blue unis. Yeah, we got TBS, too, but we didn't watch it! Pre-Rockies, however, it was all you had for a "home" team and that made sense. Nice to know that a few of you stuck with your first love.

25 games in person a year... not even if I lived in Minneapolis two blocks from the ballpark. Personally, I'm going to the Twins v. M's game Tuesday, first MLB game since 2008. Didn't used to be that way, I used to see the Twins annually like it was an yearly Haj. We moved away from MN when I was 13 and I made it to a Twins game every year for something like 15 of the first 16 years away in places like Oakland, Seattle, Anaheim, KC, Baltimore and MN. Now it's not a "drop everything" priority, but I am glad I'm going this year.

I did witness the biggest moment in Safeco Park fantasy history as I sat in the stands for the second game of the year of 2000 where I, you, and most of us Roto Gurupies got "Ramoned". Ramon Martinez managed a -100 Small World score right before my eyes. I've never had luck when a visiting pitcher is on my roto team and I see him pitch at Safeco. I don't own any Twins starters this year, so y'all are safe Tuesday.

I grew up near Washington DC and when I was deciding on a baseball team I could have easily picked the Orioles. But I liked the Braves' hats better! No joke, I picked the Braves cuz I liked their hats. It happened to be about the all-star break in 1991, when they were much improved, but 9.5 games out of first behind the Dodgers. The rest is history.

After watching the injury to Buster Posey, I think MLB baseball should consider a rule change to prevent home plate collisions. Posey could be out for the season

I remember Yadier Molina getting a concussion a couple of years ago against the Phillies. And the Pete Rose/Ray Fosse all-star game collision.

It is a much too dangerous play that could easily be prevented with a rule change that isn't a major change to the game.

I am gonna miss Posey on my team.

However he did place himself in jeopardy with the way he set up his legs before the collision... I am sure there is a better way to get set up to avoid the gruesome ankle twisting.

Do agree with TD that the Rose collision was uncalled for but legal...

You could cut down on dangerous collisions quite a bit if catchers stopped illegally obstructing baserunners when they didn't have the ball.

You know your team is bad when only two of your players are rated as starters by 80% of the Yahoo leagues....

Toral -- also true, but there is that anticipation that the ball will get there in time so ya gotta be ready. Posey just had his legs in the absolute wrong position. It looked more like what you would see on a football field. Latest is broken fibula plus three torn ligaments.
54Toral

Right. Posey's was an important run to block, and also Fosse's obviously. But I have a theory that over time the game will evolve so that catchers do not block the plate except in important situations like these. In regular situations they will do like 3rd basemen and 2nd basemen and just position themselves so they can tag the guy before he touches the plate.

It has been noted that in the Posey situaion the runner could have scored by sliding past the open plate or doing a hook slide or some variant. What that means also is that the blocking-the-plate position was useless anyway.

The first organization that teaches this will get laughed at, but will save its Buster Poseys from injuries like this.

The baseball gods are not on my side this season. Posey is out for one. Then my team has one of it's better days: 15/50, 9R, 4BI, .300 ,400; 7IP, 6k, 2.57 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and LOSES 4.5 points to fall back into last ---again...

Let's see, I drafted Rickie Weeks, Matt Holliday, David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Pedro Alvarez and Carlos Pena. Now, if you told me that three of those guys would spend significant time on the DL in the first half of the season while the other three would play well, I think I would have guessed the wrong three in each category.

I've got the M's starting SS on the block, Brandon Ryan. He's been surprisingly good the past month - 15 runs 10 rbi 6 steals .358/.434, good for fifth amongst all shortstops.

I'm sure there are a few teams struggling at middle infielder, I'm looking for a pitcher who can strike someone out.

I'm still looking for a 1B in exchange for a SP.

Three of my players get traded and I believe all three will lose value, KRod is now nearly worthless. Then Rickie Weeks takes all of his annual sick leave and borrows some from other healthy players. Arg!

SS Brendan Ryan made perhaps Seattle's most alert play of the season Tuesday. He reached first in the first inning on an infield hit off the glove of Oakland SS Eric Sogard. With Sogard in short left field and 2B Jamile Weeks trying to back up at first, no one was covering second. Ryan lit out for second and 3B Scott Sizemore, the closest to second, tried to cover. But after Ryan slid safely at second, he saw third base was undefended, and he took off from there, making it easily. That started a two-run rally.

You can't teach that kind of heads up play! And y'all could have that kind of gamer influence in your lineup...

It's funny... no matte how much baseball you watch, every year you see something you've never seen before. That is a perfect example.

Kinda reminds me of that play in the 09 WS -- was it Matsui who went to third on the play???

There was one day back in May or June when I was in third place for the briefest of moments and I should have said "stop the season NOW".

Well, I crawled up to seventh and damn, I'll take it. No more whammies, STOP!

Woo Hoo! It's all going just as I planned now that Jason Bartlett has a "SZ" festooned across his chest!

Did I mention that last year in RIBC I drafted Asdrubal Caberra and JJ Hardy as my shortstops and they sucked? Wrong year!

Enjoy Bartlett SZ! He was semi-servicable for me. I knew based in the draft rationales you had am intrest in him, I even thought about trade proposals, but the deadline passed and he became my odd man out. We're both part of that pack fighting for 7th through 12th so we'll see who this transaction helps.

This season just won't end. There is nothing interesting at all in baseball right now, no pennant races or exciting personal milestones. It's so bad, I actually feel sorry for the guys on Baseball Tonight, it must be torture to fake the emotion recapping these pointless games. We are all much more enamored with the Rugby World Cup. Why is this not on ESPN?!

Well there is a bit of a race in the NL as the Braves complete their Mets-esque choke job. The Red Sox tried to pull the same thing, but not as well.

One interesting part about my so-so season is that even though I've traded away 3 closers this year, I'm back in first in the saves category.

Congrats to Nerfherders on his decisive victory, pretty much wire to wire I believe. Props also to our top 3 who will get invites to the RIBC in 2012. (or is it top 4).

I'm pretty content with my 7th place finish, only because I am considering I was in deep 16th at the all star break. Quite a second half comeback for me as I actually reached 5th place after last weekend.

I am amused that I ended up with a 12 in the saves category because I was sitting at 3 at the break and a few trade offers came my way for my closer with the text something like "since you are conceding this category anyway...". But a pick up of Nathan and a trade for League netted my 20 more saves in the last two and a half months to jump me 10 points in that one column. In wins I jumped from sitting with a 1 as late as 8/30 to finishing a month later with a 7 which helped my overall strong finish. I'll add more thoughts (including mocking many of my rationales like the one for 4th rounder Alex Rios or 9th rounder Ryan Franklin, laugh at my 4 busts in the rationale thread with picks 11-15 - or gloating towards my "too early" critics of 8th rounder David Ortiz) if we do one of those season end summary threads.

As always a thanks to Guru for this site and to Judy our commish for getting our league organized. Also thanks to the whole league for staying active and competitive all season. I look forward to competing with you again in the years to come.

Enjoy watching the post season without having to root for certain players. See you in 2012.

Well, baseball did end up having a pretty exciting three minute stretch at around 9:00pm Pacific time last night. Can't say the same about our league, Nerfherders ran away with it, winning with authority! Congrats! And nice come back by Tosh to get the call up to the bigs.

Thanks all!

Yeah I pretty much won this league in the draft. The only players that I had for any considerable time that I didnt draft were my revolving 1B and CI's (Carp and Freese, mostly), Nyjer Morgan, and Pennington. My entire pitching staff was drafted until Zim and Jurrjens were out. Hernandez was a nice pickup that got me a few saves.

The irony is that I lamented my first three picks, and if I had gotten who I wanted I wouldn't have even been close to 1st place.

My first 4 picks were out of sight, which has never happened for me in this league, and my first 10 picks were all at least serviceable. Roberts and Aardsma were busts, but I made up for that with Jurrjens and Jordan in the late rounds, whom I drafted with about 5 minutes of internet per day while on a cruise.

I consider winning this league my greatest accomplishment in fantasy baseball. You guys are tough to beat! Between AA and AAA Ive gone 8th, 16th, T7th, 4th, 5th, and 7th. I had won other leagues before, but this one had eluded me. The time I finished 4th I as in 1st with 10 days to play. The next year I was way ahead in first and fell in the last two months. While last year I considered my greatest job of managing, this year I consider my greatest draft performance. Sure, alot of draft success is dumb luck, and I dont consider myself suddenly smarter than I was before, but it is something special when you can essentially draft a team, start it every day, and win.

Congrats to Nerf, Scorpions and Tosh. Good Luck with the big boys.

The battle for spots 2-3 were intense. I just tried to get to 10th and almost made it and then bombed out the last week. Not quite sure what made my team so bad, but the fact that I ran out of IP two weeks ago might have something to do with it...

AAA will greet 5 of the teams that got bumped up to Big Boys, so we will again renew rivalries. See you in February, if not in football.

congrats Nerf, like you said, with the draft you had (especialy the early rounds), we just didn't have a chance. Very nicely done.

My team on the other hand, was an entirely differnet story. I have had some success in these leagues before (won AA in 2007, 3rd in big league in 2008), but I really feel that taking this team to a 2nd place finish is my greatest achievement yet.
The draft was average at best... Mauer (2nd), Ethier (5th) and Nathan (6th) were awfull, and the later rounds were better but nothing spectaculer, a lot of servicible guys with no big stars.
But thats what I love about this roto format... every league is different, and by being active on the trade front and playing the categories just right I was able to finish with almost 120 points. On paper, it looks like I got the shorter stick in some of the trades (Kimberl for Haren, Ian Kennedy and Carlos Pena for Votto), but for my specific team in this specific league those trades had a huge positive impact on my points total.
I wonder what big of an impact Javier Vazquez had, as I kept plugging him in for 2 months and he rewarded me with a 9.17 ERA and 1.98 WHIP over almost 40 IP, only to become one of the most effective starters out there just as I got rid of him... but thats water under the bridge.

Looking back at the draft recap, I pointed out Nerf's and Tosh's teams as contenders, and the 3 of us ended up the top 3, so I guess it was a successfull season from that angle too.

Thanks Judy and everyone else for another fun season, good luck next year!

Congrats to Nerf for kicking our butts ... and a huge THANKS to Judy for another great job of being Commish.

It's nice to see that I was able to move up to third, while starting with a draft slot of #12. Only 12 of my original 25 draftees only made it to the end of the season. The other 13 were all waived (no trades).
