Draft thread

Please use this thread for all draft discussion. Please don't mention names of eligible draftees.

I'm currently on vacation, so please don't count on me for queues, etc.

Thanks Guru. And I am at a work event all day and will be mostly unavailable. I have Ref's pick which I will forward along if I don't hear about any trades.

Tosh is also on vacation so the inmates will need to run the asylum a little today.....but it's a short draft, and the info everyone needs is at their disposal. The draft grid and existing prospect names are in the draft thread.

We keep track of prospect picks over the years by continuing with the round numbers. So, please realize that these are rounds 21, 22 and 23 and list them accordingly.

I can check my phone at times, so text or email me with questions or problems.

Good luck in the draft!

I am now semi-available again and will try and help move this draft along. Make sure you are emailing the next 3 after your pick.

My bad on the delay. Spaced it until I was getting settled to tune in to the hr derby, and it dawned on me what that meant. Sorry folks.

Slizz's pick is invalid as he is on R9s active roster. Draft continues and he will need to re-pick.

Moore is on Great One's roster. What's next, someone's going to pick Eric Hosmer?

Darkside with the total homer pick.....I don't even know who that is....although admittedly I didn't study much.

I hadn't heard of him either, Species. Honestly, most of these picks were on my radar, besides Milone.

Ha! Species is right that it was a homer pick. Having J. Zimmermann and Espinosa on my team has been great--I watch almost every Nats game--so I figured I try again.

Plus, I changed my prospect strategy last year and liked it so much I stuck w/ it. I'm tired of going after a flashy guy that probably won't pan out...at least not early enough for you to keep him (Iannetta, B. Wood, P. Hughes) and aim for guys who have a good chance of starting next year, have played minor league ball, hopefully through AAA or at least with some expectation they'll get the call soon, and would likely fill a gap on my team next year. Arencibia worked out, Sizemore kinda is. Not sure about Brandon Allen, but have some hope.

Perhaps every now and again I'll end up w/ someone keeper worthy, but if not at least they'll have actually contributed to my team. Even being a Nats fan I wasn't too familiar with Milone, but his AAA stats this year are solid: 103 IP, 107 K, 7 BB, 3.15 ERA and .961 WHIP. There's an excellent chance he'll be given a rotation spot next year, so I figured I may as well get a guy I might be able to watch once a week.

...though I should point out I traded for Hughes, and I'll add LaPorta to the list of hypes that fizzled before I could keep him.

Him and Cron were the only two I needed to look up. That BB/K ratio is ridiculous though, and at AAA no less. Hard to argue that he isn't worth a flyer.

As to the Rays prospects:

Just read a blurb that the countdown to Desmond Jennings' 3000th minor league hit was on and that by 2016 when they promote Jennings and Moore to the bigs, they should be sufficiently polished.

R9, surprised you didn't know Cron. He was rated 80/80 in power. Appears to be a defensive liability but who cares for fantasy purposes.

I had heard about him but didn't know much. I didn't get much past the top 10 from this year's draft.

Wheeler was on my short list for my last two picks though.

This was a weak p-draft for hitters - Cron was right up there, since the power is enticing.

Quite happen with Dellin and Arodys - they have the best names in addition the best talent. And they fit well on my team, which has many more hitters than pitchers.

I really like what nerf did in this draft. Turner is a stud and Arenado was someone who has really shot up propect lists AND has the opportunity available when he's ready, as (sorry bmd) Stewart just isn't the answer.

The Rays' handling of their prospects is highly frustrating for the fantasy player. That's not to say it's bad from a baseball/good of the team perspective, but there are VERY few teams out there who would still have Jennings in the minors. Moore is still a little rough around the edges and probably should be brought along slowly, despite his overpowering stuff.....he is not polished enough for the bigs.

I never realized what a closet Yankee fan bh is.

Where would Banuelos have gone if he was available?

Mid 1st sounds about right.

Don't think I would've taken him, because I'd have gone after Martinez or Profar at 8th anyway and I can't see him lasting to 19-20th.

I'm not sold on Arenado, mostly because he only recently started being great, but Turner was one of the best pitchers available here (although I wish he K'd more).

I have no problem loading up on Yankees - they're the local team, my father's favorite team, have a great history, and play in the other league. Just unfortunately I might have to cheer for Arodys on the Braves.

And I hate to say it, but Ref helped himself the most - Rendon and Bauer are fantastic talents.

Yeah I thought I did pretty well considering I only had two picks to work with. In the first round I wanted a pitcher for sure, and the three names I had were Moore, Turner, and Vizcaino. Second round was for a hitter that wasn't an outfielder, and that list was Mesoraco, Lee, and Arenado. I would've loved to have Mesoraco because he's the closest hitter, perhaps of the entire draft, to getting to the majors. Arenado is still a couple years away, and while my biggest need is probably 3B, I wonder if it will still be when Arenado is ready.

I think one of the hardest things to balance in the P-draft is the value between high first round picks of the June draft and the prospects who are rewriting the prospect rankings by coming into their own during the year. Brandon Belt was one of those last year (who, bluntly, I missed).....Arenado is kind of like that this year. Personally, I think too many people put too much stock into the June draft and miss out on some real up-and-comers who are already in their 2nd/3rd year of professional baseball.

The other strategy I like to employ (although unsuccessfully so far!) is the darkside strategy.....maybe sacrificing long term upside for a quicker rise to the bigs so you get value quicker. Tried that with Eric Young Jr. hoping he could be a quick riser as a speed merchant at 2nd. Failed miserably, but the strategy was sound.

I tried that too a few years back with rather mediocre results, but I do think it can be best approach for immediate help the following year.

Last year I saw both Belt and Sands really coming into their own, and decided to pick one or the other. Picked Sands on a whim; figured since he could play both OF and 1B that he had a better shot at reaching the majors sooner.

I'll tell ya though, I've become accustomed to having lots of picks now. Its going to be tough going back to 1 or 2 picks, trying to decide which guy I want most.

The worst team should get helped the most--but it really is a crap shoot. In all the years, I've only one prospect where I was really excited about and he already has had Tommy John surgery. Rendon is no sure thing with a bad shoulder and ankles and his productivity really dropped off when they went to the less dangerous bats. But even if he isn't hitting the ball over the fence his OBP should be really high and I've been bad there for awhile. He will prob get moved to 2b with Zimmerman in the bigs so that's an issue for me needing a 3b but even better value for a 2B--except speed.

I almost grabbed Martin and Mesoraco earlier this year. Almost claimed Martin off waivers as soon as ESPN added him but didn't. Both should be September call-ups with upside. I ended up getting Martin basically because with all the money they gave him, they are going to give him every opportunity to excel. Catchers drive me nuts, but a great one could be a difference maker.

I have so many Ps and my Hs are just not getting it done so my plan was to go all Hs--but couldn't pass up Bauer when he fell to me. Supposedly these players won't take too long getting to the majors...we shall see.

As long as you don't reach the draft is 90% luck.

Personally, I think hitters > pitchers. I've thrown back at least half my pitchers and only 1-2 hitters. Plus, the pitchers that do pan out aren't immediately superstars so you have to burn a keeper slot for 1-2 years and hope they don't get injured.
