0 Subject: RotoAKI - Series 2 - Season 1 - New Day, New Draft

Posted by: Stealth - [01241122] Mon, Feb 11, 2013, 23:24

It's that time of year again. The gators are chompin, the birds are chirpin... and the NorthEast is covered in 3 feet of snow and still dealing with sub-zero temps. It's a good time to be alive.

I'm not going to post any league info because I know some changes will be made this offseason. Mike and I already have a list of topics to bring up for discussion.

I will drop the first bomb. The first major change from Series 1 to Series to is.... Joe Kinlan, the man known as MITH, will be joining us this season. If all ten of us come back, we will play with eleven managers this series. Thats thinning the pool by almost 30 players, which puts an extra emphasis on drafting smart.

For any who don't know, ROTOYAKL was created by MITH and I thirteen years ago (can that be?). The only reason I was the commish was because he didn't want it. MITH was instrumental on every decision made there. He was an extreme influence on the new structure this AKI format brings. I believe we talked about this league and what it should be for 2-3 years before we went ahead with it. So, after years of shameless begging, he finally relented.

Welcome MITH.

I know that MJD has some points to bring up. So, I will let him take the lead on those. For me, there were two issues that I would like addressed before we get started.

A) Last year I pulled the trigger on starting the season without making an 'Official Start' day and time. There is no need to vote on this. Moving forward, every season will have an official start day and time. This will likely be determined by me as I'm uploading the rosters. I'm very sorry for this error last year.

B) Even with all my checks and balances, we still had managers mathematically eliminated prior to the starting of the 4th season. I have thoughts on both sides of this one.

My first thought is, with us being able to keep less and less players as the series progresses, the likelyhood of a single manager, who is active in both free agency and trade markets throughout would ever truly have trouble getting out of the basement. What happened in the first series will never, ever happen again. We're all very experienced fantasy baseball managers, number 1 and I think that each manager, now going through the series once has a much better appreciation to what is successful in this league format. Adding an 11th manager increases the unlikelyhood.

With this being said, I'm open to changes, but I reserve that the checks and balances have already been set in place and any changes we make should be minor at best.

Now, any situation where someone finished in last place three years in a row, that person will always be mathematically eliminated from the series. There is very little I can do to keep that manager in the hunt. I would argue that manager doesn't really deserve a 'hail mary' type of comeback. I am more concerned with the middle of the road managers that finish 4th thru 8th. I would like to help them bridge that gap so that they always feel they have a chance and something to play for.

I think we have a few ideas, which we can take or leave all. This is open for discussion. All ideas will be seriously considered.

1 - Shorten series to 3 seasons
2 - Add more bonus categories (ROY, Rolaids Reliever, Comeback player; or even Cycles and Perfect Games)
3 - Have increasing Series Points. Meaning S1 (from 1-11), in S2 (from 2-12), in S3 (3-13) and in S4 (4-14)
4 - Add out of the box bonus points. I'm thinking to add a fun factor, oh yes, I have (had?) a fun side. Pre-season declared achievements that every manager would be capible of aquiring. It would have to be a season long achievement. It would have to be something you pay attention to and work for. My mind is still running on this one. I'm open to ideas, as always.

I know one of MJDs points were going to be tiebreakers. Mike, did u have anything thought out?

My biggest concern is the lack of tie breakers. We were very lucky that we didn't need one last year as we just as easily could have had a 2 or even 3-way tie for the winner of the series.

Another basically repeats Stealth's desire to allow ways for more teams to be competitive to the end of the series. Last season all but 3 teams were eliminated from winning the series.

I agree tie breakers are needed. My initial suggestion for tiebreakers would be that the 1st Tie Breaker would be Series Points minus Bonus Points.

I am a fan of the bonus categories (#2) stated above. More so ones given based on the players performance for the year. Things like a perfect game or hitting for the cycle is more a reflection of having a good day. A ROY or Comeback Player of the year bonus shows a manager either did a great job drafting or in some rare cases did a good job forecasting a players abilities early on when they were in the FA pool.

To qualify for one of those bonuses presumably the player would have to be on your team for a minimum period of time?

Also I'm pretty sure the recipients of those awards aren't announced until a few days after the season ends. Not sure how much that matters to the group.

(11) I'd like to see a reward for first place finishes. Either by way of a bonus point(s) or tie breaker.

(12) I agree with that.

(13)I believe the player must just be on your roster at the end of the season.

Mith, if a player is having that good of a season then I'm sure they will have been on a roster for awhile so I don't have any issues as to when they get on one. I also dont mind waiting for the announcement of awards. Though then you get into subjective voting which could influence a tie. Hadnt really thought of that.

Fine by me. Though I could see why a team might have wanted to drop last year's AL Comeback Player of the Year Award winner, for example.

Adam Dunn had OBP of .289 in August and .302 in September.

That doesn't make it a bad idea of course, just adds a wrinkle for a manager to consider before dropping a player.

Here's a thought - perhaps better series parity could be achieved by awarding a minimum number of series points to every team.

Maybe all of the teams in the bottom 4 each gets the same 4 points?

(14) I like 1st place finishes as a 2nd tie break. Its far better than anything I've come up with. I'd like it to be performance based, and that also leads us to multiple levels (3rd TB - 2nds; 4th - 3rds, etc), should we ever need. I will leave the door open, should we ever come up with a better option, we can always insert it between 1st and 2nd. Does anyone have another idea or a problem with this structure??

17) I'm not loving this idea. I do love the uniqueness of it. I'm open to other suggestions, but to me, that would only give the 10th place player a reason to give up, not a reason to keep fighting hard. I know I would be far more motivated to fight for those 3 extra points if I feared being mathematically eliminated before the 4th season started.

Altering the scale of series points awarded seems like the simplest way to weigh the single season rank according to your preferences.

You said you wanted to improve the series chances for the manages who finish 4th through 8th. In your first series format, the 4th place through 8th place managers collected series points between 70% and 40% (respectively) of the season winner.

Here's a suggestion that raises the series prospects for the 8th place manager to just below the bar previously set for the 4th place manager:

1st place: 25pts.
2nd: 24
3rd: 22
4th: 21
5th: 20
6th: 19
7th: 18
8th: 17
9th: 15
10th: 10
11th: 8

In this suggestion, the 8th place manager collects 68% as many points as the winner, compared with the 40% that you say was not enough to keep him competitive in the last series.

You have a better idea of the results your looking for than I do and I'm not sure if this is exactly what you want. But I think adjusting the point scale away from the simplistic 1 point per rank position is the most straightforward approach.

We have time to think about this. And, I'm open to all idea's, but my suggestion to fix the parity problem is this...

1 - Add Bonus Point Categories - Rolaids Reliever, Rookie of the Year, Comeback Player

2 - Increase Bonus Points - Cats MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year from 1 BP to 2 BPs.

3 - Increase Bonus Points From Season to Season - Season 1 - Points range from 1-11; Season 2 - 2-12, Season 3 - 3-13; Season 4 - 4-14

There is one downside that I can see to these changes. It undervalues the early seasons, and puts greater emphasis on the later years. Adding the extra bonus points is great, but alone it throws off the balance.

I would be open to increasing Cy Young, RoY and MVP to 1.5 pts each, but I felt it just isn't enough, and making them 2pts each seemed to be too much.

Thoughts?

If the group likes the (21)/(22) version better, I could totally get behind that instead of the increasing total method. We can put to a vote which method we like, then settle on what values should be assigned to what place.

Good ideas Joe.

Posts 21/22 weren't written as a finished proposal to be voted on, just a suggestion for how you could scale the series points to make each season standings position exactly as valuable in the series ranking as you want them to be.

Since I'm not sure just how much of a chance you want the 6th place finisher in season 1 to have in the series standings (for example) I'm not sure about the best way to distribute the points and am just guessing at what you're looking to accomplish.

Also, I don't see how the bonus points system increases parity. At best, it seems random, which makes it just as likely to decrease parity as increase it. And if it turns out that the higher finishing teams are more likely to be holding award winning players on the last day of the season, then the bonus points would actually decrease parity.

I love posts 21 and 22. I think its a great idea. I wrote my post 23 before seeing them. I'm saying at this point, lets decide if we think switching to that scoring method it a better option. If we vote to switch, I'd like to first sit down with Mike (MJD) and narrow down what we think works best for all. Then after we come up with a game plan, we will bring it to the group for tweaking. Bonus points have been up and down the board. It simply adds more points to the pool. I haven't done this research before this morning, but now, it seems like it should be done, if only for reasons of posterity.

Two additional thoughts...

a) Adding the bonus categories isn't specifically to add parity to the league. As I said above, it just adds points to the pool, which are avaiable to anyone.

b) I did have one thought to help the teams on the bottom, and specifically add parity. We can start the season with the waiver order run from bottom to top.

I really don't think the parity problem needs any extreme fix. Tweaking the point structure could be one fix, adding bonus cats could be another, switching the waiver order could be a third. We can consider one, all or none.

Ok fellers, I thinks we're ready to start this train a'movin. So, let's make it formal. Now that we have an odd number of managers, I will hold off my votes until the end moving forward, in case we need tie breakers.

New Rules

  1. OFFICIAL START TIME DECLARATION

Each season, after the draft is complete, I will determine an 'Official Start Date/Time'. It will be at least 24 hours after the rosters are submitted into Yahoo, and at least 24 hours prior to the starting of the season (night prior to first game). All managers will be notified by email, as well as through Yahoo post. No Vote Needed.

  2. TIE BREAK STRUCTURE - SERIES POINTS

    Moving forward,
in the event that there is a tie in Series Points, the tiebreakers are as follows:

    • TIE BREAKER 1 - CUMULATIVE TOTAL OF ALL SERIES POINTS minus BONUS POINTS

    • TIE BREAKER 2 - CUMULATIVE TOTAL OF ALL YAHOO POINTS

    • TIE BREAKER 3 - CUMULATIVE TOTAL OF ALL 1st PLACE FINISHES (SOLO AND TIES)

    • TIE BREAKER 4 - CUMULATIVE TOTAL OF ALL 2nd PLACE FINISHES (SOLO AND TIES)

  3. CHANGE IN LEAGUE POINT STRUCTURE

Some managers found that they were mathematically eliminated prior to the fourth season starting. This vote is solely to find out if a change in League Point Structure is wanted by everyone. If this vote passes, MJD and myself will develop a structure which we will submit to the group for tweaking.

    • PROP 1 - DO YOU WANT US TO RESTRUCTURE THE SERIES POINTS BREAKDOWN? (Please Answer: YES/NO)

  4. ADD BONUS POINT CATEGORIES

Another method for narrowing the gap would be to add more bonus categories. To make it easy for me to read you all as a group, I'm going to create a vote for each possible option. If you want them all, vote 'yes' to all props. If you want none, vote 'no' to all props. The player must be on your roster at the end of the regular season

    • PROP 2 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'ROOKIE OF THE YEAR'? (Please Answer: YES/NO)

    • PROP 3 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'ROLAIDS RELIEVER'? (Please Answer: YES/NO)

    • PROP 4 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR'? (Please Answer: YES/NO)

    • PROP 5 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'MOST FIRST PLACE CATEGORY '? (Please Answer: YES/NO)

  5. CHANGE IN WAIVER PRIORITY

This was brought up as a possible solution to a league parity issue.
This would change the existing rule so that when the season begins, the waiver order will go from the prior seasons last place team, then progress through from last to the first place team. Typically the waiver order is the opposite of the draft order.

    • PROP 6 - DO YOU WANT US TO CHANGE THE WAIVER ORDER TO BENEFIT TEAMS FINISHING LOWER? (Please Answer: YES/NO)

A passing thought (IMHO) on Prop 5:

The top two or three teams each season will amongst them receive the "most first place category". Thus awarding a bonus point for same does not narrow the gap...it increases the gap.... as the rich have more and the poor have less.

Just curious if we have an idea for the start of this draft. Not to rush it, but i know this weekend is a very busy weekend for me and dont know my availability. If we are doing it this weekend I will try to set up a list and see if someone can do it for me.

I'm so sorry guys, my plate has been full lately. I've been trying to clear things up so I can focus on our draft.

So, first votes....

Prop 1 - DO YOU WANT US TO RESTRUCTURE THE SERIES POINTS BREAKDOWN? Y-3 N-6
- I'm a little shocked. We will revote on this at a later date and adjust if needed.

Prop 2 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'ROOKIE OF THE YEAR'? Y-7 N-2
- This passes.

Prop 3 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'ROLAIDS RELIEVER'? Y-4 N-5
- Currently Undecided - Gold can tie the vote.

Prop 4 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR'? Y-4 N-5
- Currently Undecided - Gold can tie the vote.

Prop 5 - Is a no
Prop 6 - Is a yes

Lets give GoldCoach one more time to vote, his vote matters

It won't take long to knock this thing out, but we should make a plan for our draft to start soon.

Sorry guys, I'm back. I knew my boss was going to be out of town this coming week. It lead to a crazy past week, but I'm much more settled now and should be much more help.

VOTES - RESULTS
Prop 1 - DO YOU WANT US TO RESTRUCTURE THE SERIES POINTS BREAKDOWN? Y-4 N-6
- I'm a little shocked. We will revote on this at a later date and adjust if needed.

Prop 2 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'ROOKIE OF THE YEAR'? Y-8 N-2
- This passes.

Prop 3 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'ROLAIDS RELIEVER'? Y-5 N-5 - My tie break PASSES - we can always remove it later if we need to, as long as were not tweaking series points, we may fully explore bonus points - mn

Prop 4 - DO YOU WANT US TO ADD A BONUS POINT CATEGORY FOR 'COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR'? Y-5 N-5 - My tie break PASSES - we can always remove it later if we need to, as long as were not tweaking series points, we may fully explore bonus points - mn

Prop 5 - Is even more no than before
Prop 6 - Is even more yes than before

I'd like to start as soon as possible. Who is around and what is your status? Shall we say tentative start Monday morning, when I get my fatness ready for work, I will post first pick. If everyone is around sooner, I'd be happy to start it then.

So let us know if you're available to start this... and we will. I will begin to setup the kafenatid et al.

Most of us are already drafting other leagues, so we should be ready any time.

Since we're adding a team, you won't be able to utilize the renew button on Draftime, so invites must be sent out and each member must sign in before you set the draft order.

If we can get that done ASAP, we can start immediately.

Sent an email to Fred to see what email address to send payment via paypal.

I propose that the team finishing in last place pay for next seasons draft. It's only 10 bucks, but an added incentive to keep playing and not finish last.

Hopefully Fred will answer soon and we'll be back on track.

As always, we're done with a week to spare... and now we begin the hold-our-collective-breaths and beg-the-baseball-gods-keep-our-boys-safe stages.

I will create the league tonight and send out the invite. Once everyone is signed up, I will upload. Before I start uploading I will email everyone with the official start time.

Good job everyone.

I just finished uploading the rosters. I am going to officially 'start the season' tomorrow morning at the crack 'o butt, likely around 7am. The free agent players should all be on waivers so even when we start any transactions would go through typical waiver process.

Please correct my math if I'm wrong, but this should mean any transaction made tomorrow would still go through in enough time to play Sunday night, should said player transacted actually be scheduled to play Sunday night (thats ones for you MITH, missed ya buddie!!).

Any questions?!? Good.

Good luck everyone. I look forward to another fine season.
