So far 12 have signed up in Yahoo and 11 in Draftime. Interesting that several are in one and not the other.

Jay is the only missing manager. I'll give him a little more time before looking for a replacement

Holt, Shields was still there at 6.04. While I also think it is too early to have drafted 3 SPs, I could not find a hitter that was exciting, and Shields is a top 10 SP in the eyes of some of the experts.

I prefer an end of draft summary.

Holt - I agree some surprises for me also

Guru usually wants rationals in the AAA leagues does he not?

Loki - there were so many good pitchers left I actually considered drafting my 4th SP with my last pick for just a few seconds. : ) All the hitters that I liked were looking like reaches, but I went ahead and picked one.

This is an annual occurence for me. The RIBC drafts always fall the week of Spring Break and I never know what kind of access I'll have so I have to set up queues and hope for the best. Needless to say, I don't always get the "best"...

I couldn't rationalize one way or another.

My draft summary:

My plan was perfect, I take the top 30 guys according to Yahoo rankings. Then you guys ruined it and took all my players. I only got two of the ones I wanted. Got so flustered, I just grabbed the guys on yahoo list with names ending in Z.

i've already done two H2H drafts at yahoo, and the players i got in rd. 23 are ALREADY GONE. i guess i'll have to watch the WBC to find some real sleepers nobody wants

RIBC is prolly deeper than at least 95% of all baseball leagues. 480 players if you dont count the DL. Doesn't leave many useable FAs as a result. In AA you can make some trades, preying on the less experienced, but at AAA its not so likely. So this league is all about drafting smartly, getting lucky on a couple sleepers and not getting injuries.

I never drafted on the end in RIBC, but you certainly can get burned easily by position runs in the #1 and #16 draft slots. 30 picks between opportunities can empty any position before you have a chance to react.

RIHC format allows for more in season pick ups to contribute.

My initial strategy was to be aggressive early on. Take some gambles and hope they pay off. Then second guess myself why Montero was still available in round 7.
I seem to miss out on 1B and so took 2 early on, figuring I would miss them later on. Then later on Hosmer was still available so that tactic did not pan out.

First season in AAA, I am just hoping to be competitive.

Even when I'm here I screw myself over. I got online when I was up this round (9) but forgot to turn the auto-pick off, so I got handed Andre Ethier while I was weighing my options.

funny how the moment Rotoworld released the item about Emilio Bonifacio having a big game at spring training today, he was immediately drafted in 3 different RIBC leagues, and in very different positions... I guess it doesn't take much to build some preseason hype...

Coincidence I am sure. In this league its because a few people need a MI-eligible, and especially if you need steals, he is about the best available left. In not so deep leagues he will go undrafted.

Mike-I was not sure if you would be setting up a Draft Recap thread, so I decided to get the ball rolling. I am not trying to step on your toes, but while I prefer not to write rationales, I like to read the recaps from the other managers. If you do set up a thread, please cut and paste this.
Thanks!!

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
This season I had a strategy in addition to my basic plan of drafting a team strong enough to get me back to RIBC in 2014.
The foundation of my plan was not to draft Mike Trout. I am not savvy enough to make that decision by myself, but Bob Schandler of BHQ has been pretty adamant about that so I decided to stay away from him. Of course I would have needed the 12 managers drafting before me to feel the same way to make that decision anything but moot.
I was left with a choice of positions 10-13 in the draft. I did not see much difference between the players I thought would be left this late in the 1st round so I went with 13 in order to have a better pick in round 2.
After that I had originally planned on the pretty standard strategy of picking hitting 1st and waiting on pitching. This would be modified by trying to pick the best players available in the early rounds, and then filling in positional needs and STAT categories later on.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
I liked :
2.04 Jose Bautista-Good value as he is currently #8 at MDC.
5.15 Max Scherzer-He is getting better each year, and will get me plenty of Ks.
6.04 Jamie Shields-I have never taken 3 pitchers in the 1st 6 rounds, but could not pass him up.
13.13 Jon Niese-The NY media has him set for a breakout season. They were right about R.A. Dickey, so I hope they are also right about Niese.
18.03 Yasiel Puig-I reached for him, but if he makes it to the majors this season, could he be a Mike Trout or Bryce Harper?
21.03 Jackie Bradley-See above, but not quite on his level. Because of injuries, he will be starting for the Red Sox.
17.03 Domonic Brown-He may finally fulfill his potential.

Had I known that Chase Headly would be so stupid as to slide hands 1st to break up a double play and thereby break his thumb, I would have not picked him. Otherwise, I am fairly satisfied with the players I drafted.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I think that Sanfordors and crescent coyotes have to be considered very strong based on the potential contributions of Cabrera and Braun. Trout will help Bean’s Indians to finish in the upper middle of the standings this year. I like Trout, but I found Shandler very convincing.
The draft is so deep that it is very difficult to improve your team with FAs or on the WW. I think that the team with a fairly good draft, few injuries to key players and a lot of luck will win the league.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Not much. The same group of very smart managers have been drafting together for so long that there are rarely surprises.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?
As I seem to do every season, I waited too long to pick closers and will be chasing saves all year. Otherwise I am OK with my draft.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I wanted to make sure I got two top tier SPs and at least one player at MI/3B/C in the top 5 picks. I furthur wanted two bonafide closers by pick 8. I would focus further pitching selections to mid to late rounds, but would pause to get a third closer when I saw my chances diminishing.

I was able to execute my plan with some success.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I liked:
1.01 Mike Trout, but who wouldnt like him.
5.01 RA Dickey I beleieve he can reproduce 2012 season particularly with better run support in TOR

I dis-liked:
16.15 Bruce Rondon, because he was eventually sent back to the minors, if not he may have been the steal of the draft.
20.16 Garza, didnt realize he was hurt
22.16 Capuano didnt realize he was not in rotation

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Sanfordors has balance between hitting and pitching and can be competitive in all 10 categories.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

That I got first overall pick. In hindsight, I wish I had not gotten that, because I favor a strategy of being reactive to what others are doing. When you are on the ends, you cannot react, you have to predict instead, its much harder.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I would not take first overall and would choose a more middle of the road pick. I would not take Rondon at all, and I would do more homework on the pitchers I took at the end.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Wanted to have a somewhat balanced approach, not waiting on SP too long, not too many young unproven players, not too many old-timers, but also not avoiding either group entirely. No punting of any categories. Keep an eye out for good deals. Try to avoid the injury situations that have destroyed some of my teams in years past! Hard to do. As always, keep all the hitters at .350/.450, or as close as possible, and the pitchers whips and K/9 as favorable as possible.

I executed fairly well, maybe. I tried. I think being willing to draft SP's early worked out well. So many drafters avoid them that you can end up with some good deals early on. Hamels, Bumgarner, Sale in rds 3-4-5 made it so I didn't have to take the shotgun approach in later rounds. So many of those late round SP's end up getting cut when they have a bad start or two early. No need to draft em when you can have a crack at so many in free agency. I got good deals on Kuroda and AJ Griffin (a pre-draft target), and a wild stab at T Hanson. Looking at other rosters I'm seeing quite a few that are behind the eight ball here.

I didn't punt saves, and I didn't pay much for them either. I have Reed, League, and Veras. A creepy bunch of closers, but they all seem to have the job right now and they aren't on the DL. I didn't load up on any closers in waiting. Roster slots are too valuable in this league to sit on eggs like that. An injury or two and those closers in waiting have to be cut.

I didn't punt steals, but it's a category I always struggle with due to placing a higher value on OPS. My contributors are Pedroia, Utley, Cruz, Aybar, Cain, Jay, Ichiro, McLouth, Soriano maybe? Not the greatest, but I'm not looking to finish at the top in SB. Middle of the pack is fine. work in progress.

I think I'm ok on old-timers and injury risks. I did take V-Mart rd 7 & Utley rd 8. I thought they were worth the risk. VMart will be a DH, so he may be less risk that a younger catcher who plays the field every day. I don't know if I have ever had Utley on a team before, but the pickings were so slim at MI by rd 8, and the reports on the health of his knees are good, I had to draft him. A MI hitting 3rd in the order with decent OPS and some SB's, worth a shot. Kuroda and Suzuki are oldtimers too but I got great late round deals on them. Ichiro turned his game around once he was traded to the Yankees so I thought he was worth a shot. At rd 18, who cares? Oh, A Soriano is old too, but he had 108 rbi and .500 slg last year. Late in the 16th rd, I will draft this kind of player. Might only start him on favorable matchups.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Erik Aybar in rd 11 was pretty good. Votto is nice to have on any team, of course. In RIBC he is even better than traditional leagues due to his OPS. I thought Pedroia late 2nd rd was a good deal. He was playing hurt for quite a while last year, causing deflated numbers, which I think gives him a discounted price this season. I think he'll improve his numbers this year.

Nelson Cruz in the 10th makes me nervous. If the commissioner hands 50 game suspensions to all these guys then it hurts. If not, then 10th rd is a good deal. We'll see. At the time I drafted him there were stories making it seem that the issue was dead, then a day or two later the story came back to life. At least I don't have Braun to worry about.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Graydog I guess. Who knows? You don't win this league on draft alone. It may even be less than 50% of the deal.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Nothing important comes to mind really. Who was it that drafted 10 sp's? what's up with that? : )

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I should have taken M Carpenter in rd 13. L Cain could have been drafted later. I wasn't totally sure how much non-Cardinal fans knew about Carpenter and misjudged... Kind of wanted Rutledge and S Perez this year. I had them on all my teams last year and had them targeted. They just got snapped up earlier than I liked. I really like S Perez and thought he might be under the radar. That guy has thunder in his bat and goes on some tears.

One last comment. I don't know if Reimold and McLouth were being watched by anyone else. I really like this combo with my 21 and 23 picks. McLouth looked like him old self once he joined the Orioles last year, and Reimold was crushing the ball before he went down last year. It's handy that I got both of them since they may be platooning at times (though Reimold has a very strong chance at being in the lineup every day. Showalter mad it clear that Reimold's production last season is firmly burnt in his memory). .960 OPS last year and .864 career OPS in the minors. I think there is something there, maybe? Same goes for Parmelee. He has a history of crushing the ball in the minors. Hopefully this is his breakout season. I need the help at CI.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned
I had 5th shot at draft selection with the first four already selected. I didn’t see a lot of difference between 5 and 8 so I dropped down to 8. In Hindsight I may have taken 5 to get Votto over Pujols.
My plan is always to focus on hitting and positional scarcity then taking pitching when I see value. In a pool this deep with a small bench I focus more on scarcity then my smaller pools. To further this strategy my plan was to have a platoon with 3 or 4 outfielders who (most likely) bat left handed and roster the batters facing righties for that day. I think there is some sneaky value in this format doing this (this plan worked as I have Hafner, Matt Joyce, Seth Smith for this job).
I didn’t plan to pay a lot for closers and drafted Janssen (11), Parnell (13), Beniot (21) and Rosenthal (24). I think I succeeded as Janssen and Parnell are locked into a job and Beniot is the leading candidate in Detroit. I love playing the closer carousal throughout the season as scraping for saves is just too fun.
Overall I executed my strategy, the only problem I see is age, my roster is much older than I would like and I am hoping for a rebound from some of the vets.
2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
Favs: 57 Castro, 153 Dunn, 217 Michael Young, 232 Estrada. Do overs: jesus Montero at pick 185 has the potential to be dropped if he hits like last year.
3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Holt and Fisher Cats but its hard to say. Holt and I appear to value players similarly so it doesn’t surprise me that we picked each others teams. Fisher got some great steals in the early-ish rounds.
4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Bryce Harper 7th. 4 people waiting till the 9th round to take a MI. Arod getting drafted.
5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?
Moved my draft slot up to 5 or 6, not taken Halladay, moved my team age down a couple of years.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I wanted the 2nd slot, hoping Trout would somehow appear as available in my cue, but I'm satisfied with Braun, as long as he doesn't face any discipline issues.

I vowed to try and pay more attention to the % categories, I usually screw that up somewhere along the way, and I think I did a better job this year. As usual, I try and wait on SP's

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Allot of my picks were taken significantly later then their ADP. Mostly pitchers such as Hellicksen, CJ Wilson. Getting Lohse in the last round should be a good thing, as he signed with Milw shortly after our draft was over..

I probably reached a bit on Espinosa, although his ADP as lower. And I would have liked to draft any closer other than Motte, at this point.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I really like Dilligad's team allot, and Colwater's also

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

No surprises

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I probably would wait longer on closers, this is the 2nd year in a row that my top selection got hurt ( Mariano last year ). Hopefully Motte will be back sooner than later.

my plan to begin building a team for our league was to begin at middle infield. however, picking at #12, forced an early strategy to get the best available players. I was,I felt, fortunate to get at pick 2 Josh Hamilton. i felt also from the beginning that 2nd base was the shortest field, so it was imperative to get one early. i got Kipnis, who i had as #5 2ND BASEMAN,when Zobrist was plucked right ahead of me. i preferred zobrist because of ss eligibility. I consider Josh Hamilton a great pick if the crack is in his bat and not his pipe. the biggest surprises are the number of these baseball WUZZIES who are on the DL before the season starts. Also,I was surprised, that everyone sees Mike Trout as #1 pick over MIG.I see sophomore jinx,.You know what you get eith Cabrera. my prediction is KZOSE team to beat. also everyone who drafted prospects, will i'm sure, get to see them, after more starters hit the DL. ANY hitter trying to stetch a single into a double will pull a hamstring for sure.I'm also betting that i'll see WIL MYERS before FISHERCATS, because I live in Raleigh, next door to the Durham Bulls(LOL)

Watch out league. Giancarlo Stanton has knocked in his 1st run of the season, and his 1st HR is scheduled to happen before Cinque de Mayo.
LAD63 is charging.

Re:82-I officially retract my comments about Mike Trout and his contribution to Bean's team. As an FYI , Mel Ott was the youngest in MLB to hit for the cycle at 20 years and 2 months.

For the uninitiated, from Yahoo: Trout struck out in his first at-bat, but he singled, tripled and doubled afterwards before delivered his ninth homer off Lucas Luetge in the eighth. He drove in five runs in all, and he became the youngest player to hit for the cycle since Mel Ott in 1929. Trout has his average up to .293, and he's currently on pace to finish the season with 32 homers, 112 runs scored, 122 RBI and 32 steals.

This is what Loki said: Trout will help Bean’s Indians to finish in the upper middle of the standings this year. I like Trout, but I found Shandler very convincing.

Dont recall who Shandler is, but I am currently in the upper middle of the standings (6th). So, what are you retracting?

Ron Shandler is a principle of a popular fantasy site BaseballHQ.com. He was very vocal in his opinion of Trout thus proving that the "experts" can be as far off in their predictions as we can be.
I am retracting my implication that Trout was not worthy of a top pick. He was a great pick and could enable you to finish in the top 3 in our league.

Congrats to Jasonprof (and Reeb for finishing 2nd). It was a fun season. Glad it's over though. Felt like I was holding my outfield together with duct tape (especially after losing Nelson Cruz). Another couple weeks and I'd probably be passed by Gurudan for 3rd.
