21.03 Trevor Rosenthal, RP, StL Lot’s of hype following this guy in the Cards camp. Nice K/9 MR type and now that closer, Motte, is starting the season on the DL with dreaded elbow issues, he could get a shot at a few saves.

22.14 Tyler Colvin, OF, COL My man-crush continues on this guy. What’s not to love when playing at home? A real masher, I had him on a few teams last year and I believe I’ve drafted him on at least 3 teams this year.

23.03 Donovan Solano, 2B, MIA Also eligible at 3rd, he’ll provide me with further protection at MI and CI with the injured Hanley Ramirez, and injury prone Brian Roberts on my roster. Almost went SP here, but I always find myself on pace for about 50 IP over the limit by June.

24.14 Mitchell Boggs, RP, StL woke up at around 11 on Saturday with still 4 picks until mine. Read the news that Card’s closer, Jason Motte had an elbow issue and would be starting the season on the DL. Boggs will supposedly get the first shot. He’s yet to be drafted, so I put him on the top of my queue and selected him with the 382nd pick. Rather be lucky than good sometimes. And it pays to check the latest player news every morning and prior to every pick. Looks like I might have an extra closer to trade to shore up my lame-ass MIs.

25.03 Alexi Amarista, UTI, SD Looks like a strong Spring Training and untimely injuries may have created a starting spot out of camp for this speedy Swiss Army Knife, jack of all trades type. If he gets that starting gig, he’ll give me the same protection as Donovan Solano.

21.09 Leonys Martin OF, TEX
Martin is a young player who will get more ABs because of the departure of Josh Hamiliton. He has been solid in all categories in the minors.

22.08 Justin Maxwell OF, HOU
Maxwell should get an opportunity to play for the Astros. He has shown some power and speed when he has gotten the chance to play in the past.

23.09 Antonio Bastardo RP, PHI
I wanted to choose 3 RPs to fill out my roster, so I put a bunch of RPs that I liked on the queue and hoped to get lucky. I expect Bastardo to bounce back from a disappointing 2012 season. He has a great K rate.

24.08 Mike Adams RP, PHI
Adams has been one of the top setup pitchers over the last 5 years. He had a sub-par 2012. I am hoping his stats are a little better in 2013.

25.09 Jake McGee RP, TAM
McGee put up great numbers last season in a middle relief/setup role. He may get an opportunity to close if Rodney struggles.

21.13 Mitch Moreland, 1B, TEX
since Allen Craig is also eligible at OF I was open to get another first baseman so that I can switch him there if needed. Moreland is not that bad to get selected this late, but this may only be my opinion. I saw no other valuable first baseman that are still left so I better get him now than never.

22.04 Jonny Gomes, OF, BOS
I went with the best available hitter here. I initially thought of adding a setup man here and get lucky when the closer gets unseated but there was no clear choice left, so hitting depth was more valuable to me than a gamble for a reliever.

23.13 Billy Hamilton, SS, CIN
this is a huge gamble. it is not known when he will be called up this season and if I can afford to let him sit on my bench until this happens. in a perfect world he will get called up in May or June and gets a stolen base every other game which could still be enough to lead the league. on the other side I may need to wait until August or September to see him get some steals. all the peripheral stats don't count as long as he can show his talent on the basepaths.

24.04 Jim Henderson, RP, MIL
I finally took the gamble on a setup man. I took Henderson because I see a few issues in Axford and his higher than average WHIP whould could lead to a few shaky outings that can unseat him. next in line should be Henderson who got some experience in this role last year. 4 hours after this pick I got the news that Boggs is the new closer for the Cardinals, so the basic strategy of getting a setup man seems to be right, I'll just have to wait longer before Henderson gets his first save opportunity.

25.13 Cody Ross, OF, ARI
since I took Henderson a few other setup man were taken. this emptied the pool and I did not want to gamble on a 7th inning guy to be the named the closer sometime in the near future.
instead I took a look at injured players that may help my team in a few weeks. Cody Ross is such a player. I had him on my list for my 22.04 pick and he was still out there so I better grab him. I don't know if I will be patient enough to hold him until he gets back onto the field, probably not, but there are worse players out there to gamble on in the last round and near to last pick.

21.06 Matt Joyce – OF, TB
During the final 5 rounds I really wanted two players who had been on my queue for quite a while: Vance Worley and Will Venable. I apparently waited too long and missed out on both. I guess if those are my two biggest regrets I can’t be too disappointed with my draft.

I ended up taking one last outfielder so that I have somebody to start until Carter gains eligibility: Joyce doesn’t seem as promising now as he did last year, but he was hurt during the second half, which clearly affected his playing. He does have an ugly platoon split, but that can work to my advantage once I have 6 eligible OF.

22.11 Wesley Wright - RP, HOU
Handcuff #2. While Gregerson was chosen for Street’s injury history, Wright was chosen because he’s a really good pitcher, whereas Jose Veras is an awful pitcher. Wright is a lefty, but everything I’ve read pointed to him being next in line to close. To sum up, I’ll quote from the bottom of Wright’s FG+ profile: “If Jose Veras is the closer on the Astros, the guy behind him is worth keeping an eye on. That guy is Wesley Wright.”

23.06 Justin Masterson - SP, CLE
Like Joyce, Masterson was also pretty highly valued in 2012, and I took him and had to deal with his mediocre season. He can make it up for me in 2013 now that I’m taking him very late in the draft. Just like Jason Bay made it up to me.

24.11 AJ Ellis – C, LAD
I wanted to add a 2nd catcher since they tend to lack enough starts to put up good counting stats. Ellis is great at getting on base, he's batting in a good lineup, and he won’t hurt me in SLG.

25.06 Dee Gordon – SS, LAD
There are two justifiable reasons for drafting a player with an OPS around .600. One of them is “they’re a pitcher and their batting stats don’t count.” The other is “this player steals an absurd number of bases.”

I wanted a backup SS since I only had 3 middle infielders. My team also could use some more SB, and so this perfect storm of necessity blew Dee Gordon onto my roster. He’s expected to lose his starting job once Hanley gets off the DL, but if he's unable to outperform Luis Cruz over the first month and a half, then I’ll have probably already dropped him anyway.

There will be some profitable players drafted in the 21st and 22nd rounds, I just hope that Jared Burton is not one of them for that would mean Glen Perkins went down. Leonys Martin and Mitch Moreland are breakout candidates. I like Will Venable, D Gee, Lucas Duda, Justin Maxwell, and Drew Stubbs. I was hoping to draft both Andrew Cashner and 22.16.352 Jason Hammel, but I’m happy with the possibility of 23.01.353 Mark Melancon closing in Pittsburg. Hammel is supposedly the O’s Opening Day starter, a knee injury shrouded his excellent stuff since leaving Coors Field, I think he will surprise a lot of people this year.

Maybe I should have snagged Yunel Escobar as plan AA at short in case plan Z fails. Mitchell Boggs falling into MJD’s lap are the stories one tells years later. Do not know why 24.16.384 James McDonald gets 0 loves. I took him as my last pick last year, as well, and he came storming out of the box with a sick start to his season: 17 GS, 110 IP, 9-3, 2.37 ERA, 100 K, 0.97 WHIP! Something happened, perhaps he over extended himself in one of his starts, but he finished poorly. Looking at his line on my team, though, I stopped pitching him when it was obvious that something was wrong, so he had gave me a great contribution last season. Gems like McDonald are the main reason many touts focus on offense early and pitching late even in leagues as deep as ours. James has shown he has the skills, now let’s see him repeat them.

25.01.385 Justin Smoak has been pretty terrible the past two seasons. For some reason, Eric Wedge wants him to start 2013 at first. He’s a big kid who has a good walk ratio. If he could lay some wood on the ball, maybe, just maybe, he could break out. Every year some 26 or 27 year old comes out of nowhere… the fences are coming in, he has a 1.189 OPS this spring. What the hell?

21.07 BUD NORRIS SP HOU

Bud is the Opening Day SP for Houston, which is a great honor for him, but he plays for a crummy team so it is tempered somewhat. His ERA and WHIP will be average (3.60, 1.35) but he should manage more than 170 K’s, a counting stat that I will need. If he can get 10 W, I would be thrilled for him -- and me!

I will need to keep him out of games vs the AL West though...or his ERA and WHIP will really rise a ton!

22.10 TRAVIS SNIDER OF PGH

Just realized that we start 4 OF and I do not have 4 healthy ones yet -- only Dom and Dirks, so I need to grab a few. (Ruf and Myers are opening the season in the minors -- I hope I can hold on to them until they appear in the bigs -- but waiting until June might not be possible…)

Snider is a young un who has disappointed so far. If he gets to play on a regular basis, he might reach 15 HR, 50 RBI, and 50 R, but then again, he is playing for the Pirates...

23.07 FELIX DOUBRONT SP BOS

I felt you can never have enough SP and so I grabbed another as the OF pickin’s were slim. Felix’s problem is that he has a high ERA and WHIP but he does strike out guys, a skill that I am lacking in some of my SP. Maybe he’ll be better in those categories this year while continuing to mow ‘em down!

24.10 JUAN FRANCISCO 3B ATL

The Chipper replacement is raking it in Spring Training!

I do not really “need” another 3B/CI what with Lawrie and LaRoche manning those posts, with Logan Morrison due to check in in May. That said, I just read that Lawrie has a rib injury which could prevent him from being on the Opening Day roster -- so this is looking like a GREAT move on my part. I sure hope Lawrie’s ribs are not the dreaded “oblique injury” which takes months to heal…

Juan (lefty) is battling for the 3B slot with Chris Johnson (righty) and they are both doing well. I hope it does not develop into a platoon...

25.07 DAVID DEJESUS OF CHC

Here I am finding my 4th OF to start the season. Basically, he was the only guy left at this point. This guy is not great, but steady and reliable for maybe 60 R, 50 RBI and I hope more than 5 SB. He will be relegated to the bench or maybe the WW once everyone heals up.

21.14 Todd Helton, 1B, COL Time to get my final hitting spot filled. I'm hoping that Helton has something left in the tank, and if he hits like he did last year and plays 100 games, I'll be okay with that.

22.03 Chad Billingsley, SP LAD He's always been a bit of a disappointment considering how high of a prospect he was, but still, he's a really solid starting pitcher with good strikeout potential. I had him briefly last year and he was outstanding.

23.14 Luke Scott, DH TB This was a spec pick based on the spring he's having. If Scott is indeed back he'll be a steal at this draft spot. The only downside is that right now he's UT only.

24.03 Al Alburquerque, RP DET It could be a revolving door at closer for the Tigers this year and I grabbed the one with the most potential to wind up in the closer spot, at least in the long run. It may not be this year, but even if not he should put up decent numbers.

25.14 Russell Martin, C PIT And my starting catcher until McCann comes back. There wasn't much to choose from here but I'm hoping that I will only need him for a few weeks.

21.02(322) Jared Burton RP, MIN
Was hoping to double up with Storen here. Probably should've put him ahead of Clippard, as he is more likely to get saves, but I went with the better Ks and ratios. Burton is a solid backup that will vulture some saves for me.

22.15(351) Drew Stubbs OF, CLE
I thought I could ignore Catchers at this point since I was the only one left without one. The plan was to take Ruiz late and get someone to fill in while he was suspended. Then both Ruiz and Avila went off the board. Now, with what is left in that shallow pool, I think I'll just wait til the end and see what is left. With the run of spare OF's this turn, I felt I needed to jump in and get and extra bat. Hoping for some Runs and SB, without hurting me too much elsewhere. I'm going to need him to fill in until I get some combination of Granderson, Ortiz, and Teixeira back.

23.02(354) Sean Marshall RP, CIN
Another solid RP arm to help with K, ERA, and WHIP and maybe throw in a couple Saves, though he is probably third in line, depending on what they choose to do with Chapman. Just missed on Boggs to MJD. Nice pickup for him.

24.15(383) Jonny Venters RP, ATL
More RP help with good K and ratio numbers and one injury away from saves.

25.02(386) JP Arencibia C, TOR
Guess I need a catcher. Considered Salty too. I'm sure this is going to be a fluid position for me this season unless I get lucky and find a surprise breakout from Arencibia.

21.16 336 Nunez, Eduardo SS NYY
Need a SS for when Jeter is out so this should work. Maybe he steals a few bags while we wait it out.

22.01 337 Wheeler, Zack SP NYM
Lottery ticket sleeper SP... will hopefully hold til his callup. Great young SP.

23.16 368 Carp, Mike OF BOS
Will get some PT in BOS playing behind guys who are always injured. Maybe can smack a few HR's.

24.01 369 Lind, Adam 1B TOR
Probably gets one last chance... a DH in a loaded Toronto lineup. Does he fail again? Finally show results for all his promise?

25.16 400 Boesch, Brennan DET
Projected to get some starts for the Yankees... first man to be cut.

21.04 Carlos Ruiz- C- Phila
50 game roid suspention but I really like this guy as a late pick catcher.

22.13 Erasmus Ramirez, SP- Seattle
Basically a young prospect in rotation for Seattle- Hope for K’s from him

23.04 Santiago Casilla- RP SF
Purely a backup for Romo and Brenly doesn’t like to pitch Romo 2 days in a row so may pick up a couple saves. Was SF closer first half of last year

24.13 C. Lubke SP_ Sd
Probably won’t be available until June/July but might fill in some decent innings second half of year

25.04 Colby Lewis
Another flyer for second half of the year hoping he can come back and pick up a ferw wins for me

21.08 #328 Joaquin Benoit Det P - Possible closer or at least a closer handcuff. Rondon may get the job but also may not hold it. Will help with the whip and era numbers.

22.09 #345 Lucas Duda NYM OF - Will probably start and will help with the RBI, OBP and Slg numbers…not so much in the steals category. I had decided by now I am not going to be competitive in that category so I should try to get a player that will help in the other 4.

22.08 #360 Jason Vargas LAA P - #4 starter with a good competitive club. Hopefully can add a few wins and strikeouts without hurting the whip and era numbers.

24.09 #377 Brett Myers Cle P – Ditto as with Vargas except that Cleveland won’t be as competitive.

25.08 #392 Darin Mastroianni Min OF - With Aaron Hicks getting the starting job CF job in Minnesota, Mastro will be riding the pine. He has good speed so I’m going to hold him for a little while. If no playing time, he’s waiver wire fodder.

21.11 Cliff Pennington 2B ARI With Profar being sent to the minors, needed an option at second base.

22.06 Phil Coke RP, DET Potential saves. At the time Rondon was still in the mix.

23.11 Gerardo Parra OF, ARI Supposedly going to get some play with Eaton out.

24.06 Brandon Beachy SP, ATL Coming off Tommy John. Hopefully usefull as the year progresses...if I can stand holding him that long....

25.11 Chris Getz 2B, KAN Again with Profar in the minors for now, hoping to find someone semi-servicable late.

Gold Star Please...

21.15 Alex Avila, C, DET
Now that I have six SP and my offensive lineup is full, I can move on to the end game. I figure that the last five picks will include 2-3 middle relievers, an outfielder, and 1-2 offensive backups. The goal is to jump on whatever value presents itself. If I can find a shortstop worth owning, that would be an ideal addition, but I am skeptical.

Compared to the other RIBC drafts, Avila is a huge dropper. After an excellent year in 2011, he took a step back last year. Even then, his OBP exceeded .350. It looks like he will be the everyday catcher for the Tigers, so he will have ample opportunity to produce. Nobody else is really sticking out, so the luxury second catcher it is.

22.02 Joel Peralta, RP, TAM
Peralta hasn’t had a WHIP above 1 since 2009 with the Rockies, and he pairs that control with a solid, though not elite, K rate. In addition, he is the 8th inning man behind last year’s biggest RP shocker Fernando Rodney. If Rodney shows himself to be a one-year wonder, Peralta has the skills to succeed in the closer role.

23.15 Chris Young, OF, OAK
The pool of interesting outfielders thinned out more than I expected after my previous pick, so I decided to grab my top pick from what was left before nothing remained. In his last full season of 2011, Chris Young put up a 20/20 season. His batting average has never been strong, but he compensates somewhat with a very good BB rate. The move from Chase Field to Oakland is not a positive, and the Athletics have a quite crowded outfield, so there are certainly some valid concerns. In the 23rd round, I think his upside is pretty respectable and not that far-fetched.

24.02 Koji Uehara, RP, BOS
Koji Uehara is very good at pitching. His career ERA and WHIP are 2.83 and 0.91, and he strikes out almost a third of the batters he faces. Uehara seems unlikely to close games anytime soon due to a perceived lack of durability, but he should help me with my ratios.

25.15 Hiroyuki Nakajima, SS, OAK
If Daniel Murphy is not healthy by opening day, I will need a MI to plug into his slot. Everyone left seems terrible, but I think Nakajima has more upside than the rest of the scrap heap, despite his awful spring training. I’m not optimistic.
