We're basically done as of this posting - 3 picks left. So its time to start our recaps. First, I would like to encourage everybody to visit the RIBC AA yahoo Rationale thread and post your pick by pick rationales to help explain your thought processes. To me, this is one of the greatest things of the RIBC leagues - the learning tools. Being able to see other manager's thought processes help figure out what works and what doesn't. And lets be honest - we're all in AA right now - we need to figure out what works!

But this is another great aspect -the recap. Its a chance to evaluate your own draft, your fellow manager's draft, start a friendly rivalry and nice smack and do some public prognosticating. So have it.

Please indicate your draft slot, discuss a bit about your game plan, what went right with your strat, what went wrong, favorite picks, least favorite picks, picks you'd do over, and if you feel up to, its always fun to evaluate which teams you think did best and worst and which teams you'd like to have aside from your own.

So have it!!!

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Well, after last season's AAA fiasco I thought for sure guru would revoke my rights to even come to the website. That's how horrible I felt I did. So my strategy was a bit re-vamped coming in here. I did 1 mock espn draft and 5 mock yahoo drafts (12 man format). Plugged them all into excel, adjusted pick to match up to a 16 man and developed a list of players I was targeting for each round. This took me thru about round 9 or so and after that it was just too unpredictable. I had who I felt were a few 'must have' players to load up on a strat of well-rounded picks as opposed to going for guys who are beasts in just 2 or 3 categories. And of course I shied away from any hint of injury or old age.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

My favorite pick is Ian Desmond. He's one of the players I decided I really needed. I felt it was a few picks early for him but knew he wouldn't make it back so I grabbed him. Helped shape my team and helped keep me in the right direction for my strat. Do over pick is easy - Ben Revere. While he was also pre-planned and part of my strat for late round picks I REALLY over-reached for him. The following players all went before my next pick and I would have preferred to have them: Greg Holland, Nelson Cruz, Jon Lester, Howie Kendrick, Todd Frazier, David Freese, Chris Davis, Jeff Szamardija, Brandon Belt, Huston Street. Basically almost 2 full rounds worth of people.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

This is a tough one because I do really like my team this year (unlike last year). KDL212 has a very strong team and stepped on my toes quite a few with picks right out of my queue. Goatlocker has me a bit worried this season.

To be honest, looking over all the rosters there are only 2 or 3 teams that I look at and say, "no chance." At the same time, there really is no 1 team that I look at and say without a doubt, "ok,that's the team to beat." I'd have to say top 3 are KDL, Goatlocker and myself in no particular order. But there is a very small gap between 1-3, 3-5, 5-8 etc.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

There were some picks who really stood out to me. I'm sure that horrible round 9 pick from that Khahan guy will stand out as a surprise pick to some. I was surprised to see a closer go in R25. Yes, he's hurt now, but usually people speculate more than that. Francisco is supposed to be back. If I had realized he was there, I'd have take him. I'm most surprised by the seeming balance this league has, though. Really its anybody's league to win.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Yes, I would sabotage everybody else's internet connection so they'd time out and I could pick whoever I wanted. Aside from that, I'd have taken either Howie kendrick or Jon Lester in R9.

6. Which picks (outside of your own) do you think are the best value and which picks (your own included) do you think were the biggest reaches?

I think the best value picks this year came from some pitchers in the teens. Brett Anderson and Jamie Garcia really stand out to me. I think Logan Morrison will far out-perform is 367 draft slot, by at least 200 slots. But honestly I think the 2 steals of the draft were my rounds 16 (Marco Estrada) and 17 (Dominick Brown) picks. Those 2 both have the potential to be top 80 or so players. Solid contributors the whole way thru the season. And honestly I really like Matt Carpenter at R15, as well. Kind of off-sets that R9 pick I made.

In all, I'm glad my strategy was not executed perfectly. If it had been (meaning I got the #1 player targeted for each round) I would be sitting on Hanley Ramirez (round 2 target) AND Chase Headley (round 4 target). Dodged a bullet there.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned? My plan was to rate each player according to scoring category importance and shoot for what I thought would be a good total score for each category. Players who were a leader in a category get +2 while that slides down to -2 for players who are a drag on a particular category. I started executing this pretty well early on, also was able to get value players by drafting MI who are scarce 5 category players. As the draft progressed I felt myself taking best available instead of targeting weak categories.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over? Favorites were my first three; trout, kinsler and castro should be leaders at their respective positions and should help carry my team in all 5 offensive categories. I wish I had my picks of Seager and Hosmer back. In a keeper league those are great picks, but in a once and done I could have gotten more value.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
KDL Start this draft going gangbusters, I was really jealous of his picks, just couldn't get a handle on what kind of value I needed at the turn. However around rounds 8-10 I thought he reached for rivera, swisher and victorino, I believe he could have gotten more value there, then he completely redeemed himself with Teheran, Escobar and Myers late. Overall a solid draft for him.

Khahan is stacked too, his first 4 picks give him an IF that will carry him all year. I questioned his lack of SPs at first, but Sale is a Cy young candidate and Scherzer is a huge sleeper, could end up a top 5 pitcher especially with Verlander stopping in front of him. I think he has some ?s at C, OF and SP, but I think the pluses elsewhere will make up for that.

Meatwads got some great bats, but his SPs leave something to be desired. If he gets some surprises in his pen he'll be dangerous. He should talk to Goatlocker who is stacked SP and OF wise.

Wiggs has a solid team too, goodness I like a lot of teams...

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Lack of RPs, they went off the board in maybe 3-4 rounds max. Was hoping to snag some late guys and they were gone.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I would take those Seager, Hosmer picks a bit later. I reached there for positions that are typically not as deep when i could have filled them later.

6. Which picks (outside of your own) do you think are the best value and which picks (your own included) do you think were the biggest reaches?
I reached for Seager and Hosmer as I said, I think Ackley in round 15 was great (hence why my picks were reaches)I like Ross Detweiler in round 23 too

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I've co-managed a team in the RIBC league the last two years so I was familiar with the format and draft strategy. It's clear to me that impact bats are basically non-existent off the free agents throughout the season, so you need to draft them. On the other hand, there are usually serviceable pitchers available throughout the season. My plan was to go extremely heavy on the hitting side, pick up an ace pitcher and make sure I had at least two closers. I wanted to make sure I had lots of depth on the offensive side with plenty of positional flexibility. As far as my draft went, I think it played out how I imagined.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

My favorite pick was David Ortiz in the 10th round. He constantly gets disregarded in drafts due to his age and DH only eligibility. Once I figured out he qualified at 1B to start the season, I thought he was a real value at pick #155. I also liked my last round pick of Jackie Bradley. I'm not sure how much it will help this season but I think he's an excellent prospect who could help right away if he keeps the job. My least favorite pick was clearly my selection of Jonathan Broxton in the 13th round. I already had two closers when I selected him and my greediness came back to bite me. I suppose I could've gone with the best available starter there.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I'm not familiar enough with all the other teams (yet) to make any bold statements about who is ahead of the curve. I figure as with most leagues I've played, 3-4 teams will stand out after a couple months. I'll give the edge to the teams with the best offenses.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Nothing stood out as particularly surprising to me. Maybe some closers lasting as long as they did would be most surprising. Certain managers drafted very well and others did not. Pretty typical.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I may have made an effort to get a couple more highly regarded starting pitchers, but I'm not certain. I've cobbled together excellent pitching stats in these leagues playing matchups and I do think I got a couple sleeper pitchers in the last few rounds. All that being said, I probably wouldn't change much.

6. Which picks (outside of your own) do you think are the best value and which picks (your own included) do you think were the biggest reaches?

I'll just address some of the players I like as potential steals that were picked in the 20th round or later...Michael Saunders (21st round), Dee Gordon (25th round), Logan Morrison (23rd round), Shelby Miller (22nd round), Jason Vargas (21st round), Wei-Yin Chen (21st round), Andy Pettite (20th round), Hisashi Iwakuma (22nd round), Yasiel Puig (22nd round), Drew Smyly (25th round), Julio Teheren (24th round), etc.
