Subject: RIBC AAA Yahoo League 2015
Posted by: Khahan
- [54152322] Sat, Feb 28, 2015, 11:42
Discussion thread getting started here. Just a few reminders, in AAA the expectation is that we will participate and submit rationales, 3 rounds behind the current pick. We'll set up a rationale thread once we are closer to the start date. Unlike the big league we'll just post as we go, even if its out of order as we have in years past.
I've sent the invite to both Yahoo and Draftime to everybody. If you dont have both please post here with the email address you'd prefer I send the invites to. |

Ok, I've sent the Yahoo invites out twice now. When you get the invite you should make sure you are logged into Yahoo first, then open the email the click the big blue "Join Now" button.
Just in case that still doesn't work I'm going to send another email to any manager not yet signed in with the league name and ID # in it. If worst comes to worst you can search for the league and join the old fashioned way.

New round sent. this time I sent each invite individually instead of to multiple email addresses at once thru Yahoo. Lets see if this changes anything.

I saw that bebop. My Hotmail account had you signed up like 5 times, but at least in game it was only once. Speaking of which we only need C1 to register. I'll work on getting draftime invites out again to those who need to register sometime today, then we wait.

Ok, we have all 16 registered at Yahoo and at draftime. We need to pick draft order slots. I think the last 2 years Guru has generated the lists, if he doesn't mind though I can use random.org and we can be self sufficient. Big ice storm in my area though and being in insurance I expect to be busy the next few days. We'll get it done and underway though.

Alphabetical listing of team names (parenthesis is so I can match up with the guru handle):
1 Boozer 2 C1s Genius Team 3 Crack Babies 4 Dale's Team (beebop) 5 Dilligad (Mike V) 6 Fisher Cats 7 Isaac's Team (McKitrick) 8 Jason's Team 9 Khahan's Killers 10 LAD63 (Loki) 11 Mighty Meatwads 12 MJD 13 Nerfherders 14 rob's team (reeb) 15 the Power of Lemke (art of monk) 16 Tilt23-mwm2356
This is our starting point. I'll post the 2 random numbers 1 after another and the list above then reorganized along with the stamp from random.org

Timestamp: 2015-03-05 01:00:55 UTC In the alphabetical list MJD was #12 and in the random.org list #12 was first on the list so MJD got slotted there. Next list will take that randomized list and give us the order we'll use to pick our draft slots.

Again the numbers are listed in the way random.org generated then, then I put the corresponding manager from post 20 into that spot. This gives us our draft order of:

Draft order is set. Looking at leagues on draftime over the past 3 years we've started anywhere from the 4th to the 12th. I'm going to go ahead and start the draft without a clock. We're still a little early so no pressure to pick. Its started so people can log in and set queue's. We'll probably start the clock on 3/16 if we have a need for it.

McKitrick has timed out. I thought I had the ends set for a single clock but dont see a setting anywhere for that now. I hate to have somebody lose a pick (much less 2) this early in the draft. But at the same time, we have a clock going for a reason. He's had about an extra half hour. I'm going to force the pick skip and let us move forward.
Also, we're into round 3, going to post the rationale thread. When you make your first post please note why you made the draft slot selection that you did.

If we get to the end of round 3 w/out a pick we'll stop the draft and pick for him. Traditionally there is always a bump or two in the road in the early goings. I've never drafted with him before that I remember but it does sound like he does some traveling.
For McKitrick (and everybody) - if this is the case and you are out a lot please make use of the queue and designated picker systems.

We're in round 4 and only 2 days into the clock and we already have 2 time outs.
Again, Draftime offers a wonderful queue system. You can set a general queue to pull from or set a round by round queue with different players if you want. It also offers the option for designated pickers and you set it so the picker can only see the top person in your queue. USE THESE TOOLS.

Delays are fine. some people like to make changes on the fly. I can understand that and appreciate that. Especially now when there are runs at different positions to react to. He's using a queue. That is what is important.

Swear I had this set to pause at 11pm (since that was the latest on Friday). I must not have saved a setting properly. Well, until that time I'll monitor the clock manually if somebody times out I'll force skip the pick. clock officially is running unofficially until 11pm EST tonight. Then its off until 8am Monday morning.

[81] This has caught others in the past as well. There is a double confirmation that tends to get overlooked. After you enter the pause times, you get a screen showing what hours are selected. But you have to scroll way down to the bottom to conform. That step is often overlooked, since a lot of scrolling is required.
The proof of the pudding is to look at the bottom of the main draft page when you are done to make sure it shows the correct pause.

So we're thru a full business day and haven't even completed 1 round. I cut the clock down to 1 hour and we had a time out that would have happened even on the 4 hour clock.
A lot of the problems are coming near the ends. If you are within 3 picks of the turn please do the following: 1. make your pick for the current round. 2. set a queue of enough guys to get back around to you and set your auto pick. Give yourself a timer if you want.
At one point we had the #15 slot pick. Just 15 mins later the end picked and then 2 hours later the #2 picked again. Now, that person is actually overall doing very well with his times and generally pretty diligent.
When you are next to the turn, you are on the clock when you make your pick. I dont thinks its anywhere near unreasonable to ask these people to check in often at the turn or if they can't to set a short queue and use the auto pick feature.
At the pace we are going we are set to finish the draft on April 9 - 4 days into the regular season.

Fishercats - Hector Olivera is apparently not in Yahoo's database yet. I've left that spot blank. When the draft is over you must either keep a spot empty on your roster for him until he's added (and then I'll add him for you so we dont screw up waivers) or you lose rights to him and we treat it as if you dropped him to replace him if you fill the spot with somebody else.

Yes this is beebops 3rd time out in 5 rounds. Normally after 2 time outs in a short period I'd take some action to cut a clock. But he's a long time player who I don't remember having problems with before. I think at this point if we don't see a queue set and auto pick we'll have to cut his clock down. Taking into account his time zone and need to sleep during his night at least explains what is happening so I don't want to eliminate his click altogether. I think a 2 hour clock will help.
Also, in general we've done much better overall and are no longer under the gun to finish.

I'm sorry, but he should be skipped for the remainder of the draft. Five missed picks in 5 consecutive days with no explanation, apology, or excuse is totally unacceptable at this level.

I made the decision to skip dilligad's pick. There is no official clock on the weekend, however 14 hours and no pick - its time to move on. We're not at a critical point in the draft where the player we miss is going to affect our draft strategy or screw our season. In fact most likely by the end of May the player we draft now wont even be on our roster. So with all that in mind, to help us push the end I skipped after 14 hours of waiting.

Our season has begun. i have edited waiver priority to be opposite the order made our draft slot selection in. So if you picked your draft slot first you are initially last in waiver priority. I only heard from 6 teams that rosters are good. I checked as I went and spot checked before I started the season. But if you see an error on your team please follow these steps: 1. email me here asap 2. I will force swap the players out 3. come in second to me
If you try to fix the mistake yourself using waivers....then you used your waivers. If there is a mistake, email me and I'll fix it.

My team is pretty set for now, but I have to admit I wiffed on Addison Russell. However he is not on Kris Bryant's level. I am going to try to have some patience with my poorly playing hitters and pitchers this year and give them a chance to perform, making fewer moves. I must have seen something in them if I drafted them. However I succumbed to temptation by dropping Steven Souza, a mistake, and keeping Chris Carter, probably a mistake, because I drafted Carter early and Souza late.

Im kind of in the same position as Loki for my MI positions. If Addison had 3rd base eligilibility I would have grabbed him in a heartbeat. But at SS and MI I wasn't sure he'd end up being much better than who I had. Who I have isn't great but its a decent baseline that I know is attainable. Wasn't willing to risk.

I'm also trying to be more patient.
I went looking for him, expecting him to be gone, and took him because he was still there and I had someone I was willing to part with. My timing is usually poor being first in line to get someone midseason.
Not as hyped as Bryant. Highly touted, but still a kid with limited minor league experience.

Its a tough blow Loki. I had taken him (wainwright) in the 8 Men out keeper league as my first round pick to pair with Felix and make another run at 1st this year. Really tough blow.
And in the ribc trolling the waiver wire doesn't usually give an immediate long term replacement like in other leagues.

I have been back and forth with Syndergard since last season, and the NY sports media and the Mets have been hyping him for a few years. He has the potential to be an ace, but most likely not this year. As you noted our league is so deep that the waiver wire usually does not give much help, so I decided to take a flyer on him and picked him up in this league and [again] in DD.

Well with April over I find myself in familiar territory in the ribc leagues for this time of year - not in the top 5 or so.
And I can squarely blame this on obp/slg and runs.
So far I have the second best pitching in the league by total points. Tilt is at 67.5 I'm at 64.5 Crack Babies is at 60.5 and Loki is at 59.5 despite his pitcher injuries. Looking at the overall rankings Crack Babies is 1st, Loki 2nd and tilt3, yet here I am stuck in 7 and that is largely due to a 10.5 point gain over the past 2 days.
If I could just get my hitting on track and get 8's in runs, slg and obp I'd be in a tie for 2nd place. Oh and while I have a somewhat respectable 7 in SB my 1st baseman is 2nd on my team in steals. So when Cain and Marte really start to steal I should gain some there. When D'arnaud gets back, Castillo gets promoted and LaRoche breaks his early season funk I should see some gains in those % stats as well. Still Goldschmidt and Marte are justifying their draft slot and Lorenzo Cain may be one of the best value picks in the draft thru the first month. Everybody else was a disappointment in April....which is good. Law of averages and all that.
I only have 1 player really way outplaying their draft slot and some believe he can maintain close to that pace all season. The rest of my team is underperforming on the hitting side.

My gosh... I'm thinking next year I won't draft any closers. Check out my luck with closers since 2012:
2012 Heath Bell (drafted 7.03) 19 saves. Lost Job on July 9th. 6 BS, 6.75 ERA at time of job lost. Joakim Soria (drafted 9.03). 0 saves. Injured 2 days after being drafted, out for season. 2013 JJ Putz (8.03) 6 saves. Lost job on July 1st (played only 16 games). 5 BS. 4.50 ERA Brandon League (9.14). 14 saves. Lost job on June 16th. 4 BS. 5.54 ERA 2014 Joe Nathan (7.01) 35 saves. Didnt lose job (somehow). 7 BS. 4.81 ERA Sergio Romo (9.01) 23 saves. Lost Job on June 29th. 5 BS. 5.01 ERA (finished with 3.72 ERA) 2015 Steve Cishek (6.01) 3 saves. Lost job on May 12th. 4 BS. 10.32 ERA Addison Reed (8.01) 2 saves. Not yet but soon? 2 BS. 7.20 ERA
So that's 8 closers drafted before the 10th round, only one kept their job the whole season. The average ERA at the time of their last save was 6.30. Out of roughly 39 months of potential closer work, these guys managed to get 102 saves while blowing 33.
Granted some of these guys weren't great to begin with, but guys like Putz, Nathan, Romo, and Cishek were all established closers with good, if not great, track records before I drafted them.
Anyone with any sense can look at this and see a really good argument for never taking a closer before the 10th round.

Now my team is giving my that consistency that I need. I overhauled my MI positions a few weeks ago and took off. Who would have thought that Freddy Galvis (.802 ops, 4 sb, 9 runs and 3 rbis) and Logan Forsythe (.927 ops!) and zack cozart (.858 11 runs 9 rbi 2sb) would be leading the way for me as a waiver wire pick ups? Those are the numbers they've posted for me since picking them up since April 21st.
Managed to pull into 2nd place. But its kind of like Guru's post in the ribc - there is a huge gap now from 2nd to get to 1st: 25 point difference. And only yesterday there was less than a 10 point difference between me and 9th.

My team has been heading in the opposite direction, and I cannot blame it totally on losing Wainwright and Tanaka. However Zobrist, Jennings and Tanaka should be back within a month, and if Tanaka can stay healthy, if Syndergard can pitch like he did today and my other hitters can continue to hit as they have been, I think I can make it back to the 1st three. A lot of ifs.

As we end month 2 I find myself right about where I was at the end of month 1 - 3rd place between 98-102 points on any given night. About mid-May my team went on a tear - rising from 7th at the end of April to 2nd in mid-May. Today I'm tied for 3rd. This has less to do with my team faltering and more to do with the rise of Meatwads and Fisher Cats.
Points-wise I'm right where I was 2 weeks ago which is still well ahead of where I was 1 month ago.
A few players have cooled off. Galvis has seen his obp and slg dip but I've kept him in because he's been a steady source of SB. Though the past week it seems to have slowed to a trickle.
Surprisingly I don't have a single player on my team with double digit steals yet I'm pulling 11.5 points in the cat.
Overall - buster posey has been steady but has not justified a round 3 picks (maybe round 6). Paul Goldschmidt - justified!!! #1 ranked player.
Starling Marte has been justified overall but over the past 2 weeks has tailed off. Gerrit Cole (11th ranked), Shelby Miller (17th ranked) Cole Hamles (56th ranked) and Trevor Rosenthal (57th Ranked) have all justified their draft slots and have contributed to one of the top pitching staffs.
Adam LaRoche and Alexi Ramirez have both been major disappointments so far. Though over the past 2 weeks Alexei has gotten 5 of his 6 SB on the season and LaRoche .379/.438 obp/slg over the past 2 weeks. So maybe they are turning things around.
What I need to do is trade a starting pitcher for a closer and a MI or 3rd baseman who can really put up some .slg.
Rosenthal and a rogue few saves from Qualls are keeping me alive. I've picked up Wilhelmson, taking a flier on who will eventually replace Rodney Fernandez and have ken Giles. But I need those saves now, not later. And I need to fix my .slg and runs scored if I'm going to compete seriously.
Gerrit Cole anyone?

I've been floating along with about the same score but somehow went from 11th to 7th. This team feels like it should be better, despite having no saves. Most of the guys are playing decently, and even the few who started out horribly have picked it up. The bullpen is a nightmare but I've replaced most of those guys. My worst position so far is OF #1, which is Puig's spot. It's been a struggle in all of my leagues to find decent FA OF's.

Here's a kinda mid-season report for your favorite team and mine, the Mighty Meatwads!!!
THE STUDS Giancarlo Stanton, OF, MIA A.J. Pollock, OF, ARI Todd Frazier, 1B/3B, CIN Dallas Keuchel, SP, HOU Dee Gordon, 2B, MIA Chris Sale, SP, CHW
Obviously been happy with all of these guys. Any time you have 5 of the top 17 players to start the season, you must be a genius. :) Pollock and Keuchel have looked like two of the best late round picks made in the draft. Gordon and Frazier are jusfifying their early round selections thus far. Everyone knew Stanton and Sale are good, so it's been nice having them healthy.
THE CORE Stephen Vogt, C/1B/OF, OAK Lucas Duda, 1B, NYM Steven Souza, OF, TB Carson Smith, RP, SEA Avisail Garcia, OF, CHW Greg Holland, RP, KC
Another group I can't complain about. Vogt was drafted real late so he has been a huge addition. Duda, Garcia and Holland were all mid-round selections that have panned out. Souza and Smith were lucky/good free agent pick ups.
THE ROLE PLAYERS Mookie Betts, 2B/OF, BOS Yunel Escobar, 3B/SS, WAS Wilmer Flores, 2B/SS, NYM Josh Harrison, 2B/3B/OF, PIT Justin Turner, 2B/3B/SS, LAD Brett Cecil, RP, TOR
Escobar, Flores and Turner have all been fairly recent FA pick-ups but they have been decent. Cecil is supposedly the closer in Toronto, but maybe the Blue Jays are going to break the all-time record for least saves chances in a season. Mookie and Harrison have been okay. I had higher expectations for both of them, so any success they have, beyond exceeding my original expectations, is tainted in my eyes.
THE STREAMERS AND DREAMERS Jake McGee, RP, TB Jesse Hahn, SP, OAK Fernando Rodney, RP, SEA Wilin Rosario, C/1B, COL Ian Kennedy, SP, SD Taijuan Walker, SP, SEA Carlos Correa, SS, HOU
I'm highest on Correa and Walker from this group because their upside. I'm hoping McGee snatches that closer job that seems to be up in the air. Hahn, Rosario and Kennedy are likely streamers. I save the best for last. Fernando Rodney. We all know about him. Some of you probably made a decision to never have him on your team several years ago.

Im not sure which way people are protesting to be honest.
I view this as a gomez/santana for trout. I dropped butler weeks ago.
Issacs team clearly needs obp (last) which he was targetting in this trade. He got santana who crushes obp and gomez who had a 356 last year. Plus he retains the rest of his stats minus slg.
I liked getting the security of trout and i have david wright hopefully back within a month to fill my corner infield void.
I really thought about this trade before pulling the trigger; you have to look into the counting stats for both players vs trout as well as team needs. This deal helps both teams.
I invite anywho who has concerns to discuss it with the rest of us on here rather than simply email the commish.
Cheers fellas

Thanks for that fishercats. I asked for the email votes because I figure we're all capable managers who could take the time to decide. I didn't think an email discussion would be real far reaching and easy to follow either. But comments and discussion are welcome here as always and I would encourage anybody casting a vote to consider the contents in this thread.
I've also refrained from giving my own opinions of good or bad when discussing the vote because I don't want it to look like I'm trying to influence things one way or the other.

I don't vote to veto any trade unless it is obvious collusion. I don't think this is a fair or balanced trade but I don't have any reason to suspect collusion either.
IMO.... The OBP argument doesn't make sense to me.....why would issacs team give up trout with an OBP of .384 for Santana with an OBP of .355 and Gomez with an OBP of .314 if he is trying to improve his OBP. What gomez did last year is irrelevant, what he is doing this year is pertinent. Right now Trout is the 6th ranked player on yahoo/Butler 313.... Gomez 224 Santana 274..... Unless he has some reason to think that Gomez and Santana both will skyrocket up in the last half of the year this deal does not make sense. Gomez is even fighting a nagging hip injury right now lending to the theory that an imminent rise is not coming.
IMO getting the best player in fantasy for two guys underperforming right now is a steal.
Just my two cents each manager can have their own reasoning for why they do things and value players differently

Perhaps unbalanced, but not veto-able.

I received a total of 4 votes. Only 2 were to veto. Other 2 were to allow. Trade went thru as normal.

Im in the market for a closer if anyone is interested in dealing one. Have hitting, mainly OF to deal but may consider SP and other positions in the right deal.

Congratz to Mighty Meatwads for quite the nailbiter finish. Looks like he and tilt were tied going into Sunday. No point change for the meatwad and -1 for Tilt. Final score of the top 3:

Thanks Khahan! I had fun playing this season, as usual. Tilt should be commended for having such a dominate lead throughout the season. I feel fortunate to have caught him and he easily could have been the champion. I'd also like to give a shout out to Jason for willing his way into the top 3 as the most aggressive manager in the transaction department. I look forward to playing with all of you in the future again.

Been trying to get the information to Guru but I'm not sure whats happening. I know initially I had the league as private. But when Guru let me know I made it public and sent the info again.
I got another email from him last night and responded with the link again and a list of the final standings and report on player activity (happily every single manager logged in at least once during the final week to week and a half).
Here are the final standings:

Thanks, Khahan. I see what the problem is.
I apparently sent my emails to you with a "from" address that is not longer active. Bad aim, I guess. But I'm now able to access the standings link that Meatwads sent.
