Lets use this thread for the annual draft wrap up.

As always there are a few key questions to answer and discuss:

1. What was your strategy going into the draft

2. How well did you execute your game plan?

3. What were your favorite picks?
Own team:
Other teams:

4. What were some of your least favorite picks/biggest reaches?

5. Which teams look the best?

6. What teams dont you like?

7. If you could do anything over, what would it be?

1. What was your strategy going into the draft
First 4 rounds get MI and CI's as much as possible. Avoid SP and OF as both are very deep.
Load up on SP and OF in the mid (round 8-14) rounds with a closer around 7 and one of the better remaining OF and SP in rounds 5/6 to anchor things.

2. How well did you execute your game plan?
Round 1 went great. I got the guy I wanted from my slot selection. I possibly could have/should have taken slot #5 because even if goldy went abreu should have been left letting me do my thing but giving me a better chance later. My execution stunk and after round 3 I determined to do a mix of 'best available' and 'fill the need' which I think i did pretty well.

3. What were your favorite picks?
Own team: I have a few: Goldschmidt simply because he'll anchor my hitters with high ops and a few sb. I also really liked Laroche at pick 157. He'll outperform that by at least 55-60 slots. My SP staff as a whole. Top to bottom I think i got very good value with each pick.
Other teams:
CJ Cron at pick 296. Avisail Garcia at 223 (I made an in-draft trade off for him and still willing to trade as this is the only team I wont have him on and it'll bug me). Granderson at 293. I had him on my radar and queue'd him up a number of times. Homer Bailey. All good quality picks that I think will far outperform their draft slot selection and that I wouldn't mind having on my team.

4. What were some of your least favorite picks/biggest reaches?
Where to begin? Ok with mine. I'm not a fan of the Buster Posey pick. I would have been far better off in the long run reaching for a MI like damn near everybody else did. 8 MI went in the first 34 picks. There wont be 8 MI in the top 34 at the end of the season. 6 went in the first 25. There wont be 6 in the top 25 at the end of the year. After Meat took Dee Gordon about 25 picks too early at 34 we went 40+ picks without another MI being taken. Closers were another one in general that people were way over-reactive too. I always feel you want to get the best value for your draft slot. By pick 189 the last closer who was not injured and was confirmed as a closer was taken. By pick 115 the last one who will rack up k's and saves was taken. Last year over 1/3 of the 'good' closers finished outside the top 115. People...they just not worth it. They really aren't. You only hurt yourself by reaching for these guys. In fact last season only 9 full time closers finished in the top 100. And none higher than 57. 5 were taken in the top 75 this year and 2 before slot 57. So in general I'd say MI and Closers were the biggest reach of the draft and pushed and pulled at the currents of the draft too strong too early.

5. Which teams look the best?
I do like my team. I'll be competitive as always though I'll need to manage well during the season and need a bit of luck from my late round low risk/high reward crew. Meatwads is looking good. He has the most players I considered and didn't take. Diligad is looking pretty strong too. Also Jasonprof is looking strong. Any time you get Rizzo and Altuve to lead off you have a good foundation set. And while I think he overpaid for both yelich and calhoun they are 2 of my favorite young OF. I have them both in the DD keeper and have Calhoun in my other keeper league and had Yelich last year in AAA. I'd have to say Jasonprof had the best overall draft. He actually executed my plan better than I did.

6. What teams dont you like?
We go thru this every year. I honestly think these teams are different degrees of good. But as always some teams have more holes than others and as usual those holes come in the speed categories. The following teams are going to really struggle in runs/sb and probably obp and therefore struggle to stay afloat near the top of the middle to the top of the pack in season: nerfherders, el fatador, artofmonk, tilt, beebop. Finally we have boozer. He doesn't have very many speedsters but those he does have can do some damage in the standings. He's really just got ellsbury, hamilton and revere. If even 2 of those do what we think they will he'll be just fine. If all 3 do he'll be near the top. But only 1 comes thru he's going to hurt. I think he'll be ok, though.

7. If you could do anything over, what would it be?
Knowing now how quickly MI across the boards were going I wouldnt take Posey at that pick. But taking an OF or even a 3rd baseman there means later in the draft when I did take one of those positions I could have grabbed better MI. As it is my weakest spot is 3rd. Posey will do great I'm sure. Not knocking him in the least. But my team as a whole I think would look very different.

RIBC AAA 2015 Draft Wrap Up

1. What was your strategy going into the draft?
I like the earliest draft pick available to give myself the best chance of a good player in the 1st round. Only #12 and #14 remained, so I went with 12.
My strategy going into the draft was concentrate on hitting early on, specifically on HRs, wait until the 5th or 6th rounds for starting pitching and not be without decent closers.

2. How well did you execute your game plan?
I was able to draft a number of power hitters both early and late in the draft, and I drafted my core SPs in round 5, 8 and 9. Closers went very early in the draft forcing me to draft one in the 7th round. Even this early in the draft, 18 closers had already been drafted.

3. What were your favorite picks?

Own team: I like Encarnacion, Wainwright, Tanaka, Cuddyer and Alvarez.
Other teams: Mike Trout. Who else?

4. What were some of your least favorite picks/biggest reaches?
My biggest reach, and probably the biggest reach in the draft, was Chris Carter at 4.05. I drafted him as part of my HR first strategy. Archie Bradley is also a reach, but at 23.12, why not?
My least favorite pick was Steven Souza, Jr. at 14.05. He has not done anything at the MLB level, and was much too speculative for this early in the draft.

5. Which teams look the best?
At the end of the draft I like el fatado, C1-NRB and mwn2355.

6. What teams don’t you like?
I am never able to answer this one.

7. If you could do anything over, what would it be?
I like my team, and the only thing I might have done differently would have been to draft a closer earlier. I think that I am starting off fairly well, but since a draft is based on past performances and hopes for the future and the season is based these factors as well as on luck and injuries, one never really knows.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft?
My strategy is usually the same. Draft best available, for the first 5 rounds, with one SP, get on the closer run, and then fill in the roster smartly for the rest of the draft. Drafting last was different for me this year, but I didn't really change my strategy.

2. How well did you execute your game plan?
I think I executed pretty well. I got good value for the first 5 picks, and then closer run came *really* early, so I had to jump on that before I was ready. I laid off the MI craziness, mostly because I got one with my second pick. I also avoided SB guys early because Ive been burned by them one too many times. I decided I would get several guys who could get 15-20, so if I lost one, I wouldn't lose half my steals.

3. What were your favorite picks?
Kris Bryant is my favorite pick. I think he's going to be huge. I got Jose Abreu in the 5th round last year, and he was a first rounder this year. I expect the same for Bryant. I love Gattis in the 10th round. Huge steal I think. Most of the rest of my picks were pretty ho-hum. I do like Fowler in a league like this. Guys like Lind and Hill late could be huge if they find their power strokes.

4. What were some of your least favorite picks/biggest reaches?
My biggest reach was Gregory Polanco in the 7th, but at the time I didn't think it was *that* big of a reach. He's got real power potential and if he realizes it this year he's going to be better than a 7th rounder. I'm not too pleased with my SP as currently constructed, but they do have alot of upside so there's alot of hope riding on my pitching.

5. Which teams look the best?
Despite somehow thinking this is a HR league, I like loki's team. Good mix of offense and pitching.

6. What teams don’t you like?
I can't quite figure out what Art is going to do with 8 SP, and only 1350 IP to work with. And no bench pitchers.

7. If you could do anything over, what would it be?
If anything, maybe draft one more SP in the middle rounds - perhaps instead of Hill in the 17th. Pomeranz and Bauer have upside, but I am not sure how good they will be or how much they are going to pitch.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft
I look for impact in scarce positions early and wait on deeper positions. The intent was to load up on K's early.

2. How well did you execute your game plan?
Pretty well, I think. Having a mid-draft spot set me up to avoid positional "runs" and still let me complete a well-rounded roster. Taking Greinke at 4.09 had me resting on my SP laurels too long, though.

3. What were your favorite picks?
Own team:Melky Cabrera at 11.08 was a bargain. Joe Mauer at 13.08 was the last good OBP player available. He should be good for a few thousandths, maybe even a hundredth, of OBP over the course of the season.
Other teams: Mike Trout (duh.) Joey Votto at 3.07 may be the steal of the entire draft.

4. What were some of your least favorite picks/biggest reaches?
Alex Rodriguez at 10.09 Ugh. At least I was able to get his "replacement"-- Chase Headley-- at 15.08

5. Which teams look the best?
Dilligad looks good on paper but, Wow that's a lot of Rangers. I'm a Ranger Fan and I'm still thinking, "Wow. That is a lot of Rangers." I wish him well.
Boozer had an excellent mid-draft; and those are the rounds that can make or break a season.

6. What teams don't you like?
Nothing personal, but I'm not a huge fan of fishercats's or artofmonk's teams. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but there's something just a little "off" about them.

7. If you could do anything over, what would it be? Ian Kinsler could have been had later. I really should've picked up another SP in the tenth instead of A-Roid, particularly since both Verlander and Ryu are starting the season on the DL.

I've been waiting all winter for Sunday night. Play ball!

1. What was your strategy going into the draft
What strategy, maybe that was my problem. i thought i might be able to get Rendon at 13. Boy was i wrong. I took Jones and regretted it. Should have taken Rizzo. I wanted to take MI's at the start. The plan was to get Rendon and Desmond and then take a SP in the 3rd of 4th.

2. How well did you execute your game plan?
Not well. OF and 3B. I did get my SP in the 3rd.

3. What were your favorite picks?
Own team: Cespedes and dozier in the 5th and 6th rd. Tyson Ross in the 8th rd. I also like Pence in the 9th rd 141st pick.
I like Arenado. I wanted him, I thought he would be around for my next pick. Tajun walker at 242.

4. What were some of your least favorite picks/biggest reaches?
Pablo Sandoval-in the 7th. Drafttime crashed and it said my que was active. I said I would leave with the pick. Not a horrible pick, but I need other help besides another 3b.
A-rod was a major reach, but could pay off.

5. Which teams look the best?
Not sure. I think every team has holes. I like Mike's team and Khahans and Mjd.

6. What teams don't you like?
I would have to agree with many of you. My team. I have no Saves and very weak on Runs and SB. This spells trouble. I will be lucky to finish in the middle of the league. If Buxton and Baez get called up soon, It could be a different story. I would have to get lucky with saves as well.

7. If you could do anything over, what would it be?
Take the 7th slot, not the 13th. Should have reacted to the closer runs even though I thought they were some reaches. Taken Rizzo in the 1st and then pick up Yelich in the 3rd or 4th.
