Managers: This thread is for your (optional) overall comments on the draft. You may use the questions below as a guide, or simply say what you want to say.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also free to post comments or ask questions.

  1. I didn't have a broad strategy, but did have a few general thoughts.

    • Either pay up for an elite (top 3) closer, or wait as long as I could.
      • I ended up doing neither as I talked myself into the fact that Betances should join the top 3, and took him in the 5th. Once I made that decision I went all in on closer by taking Melancon in the 5th. We'll see if that works out

    • Draft heavy power early, since speed is easier to find later in the draft.
      • Definitely executed on this. While a few of my early hitters should get a handful of steals, I don't really have any burners on my team except for EY Jr in the 24th round. We'll see if the balanced approach (10-15 steals from 5-6 players) pays off

    • Get one top tier pitcher, and then wait as long as you can to fill out the staff.
      • Wanted Scherzer or Strasburg, but had to settle on Kluber. Not a long track record of success, but if he sniffs last years production, he's huge value in the 4th. I was hoping to wait until the 11th/12th round to fill out my staff, but jumped at Carrasco in the 8th. Seemed like the last pitcher of a specific tier, and pitching was going a bit earlier than expected.

  2. I always love my draft coming out of it. I spend so much time scrutinizing each pick, that I fully sell myself on them. That being said my favorite picks are:

    • 3.12: Adam Jones
      • Elite power, runs, RBi's, and a handful of steals late in the 3rd round. Poor OBP, but I think I was able to prop that up with some of my later selections.
    • 10.05: Jayson Werth
      • Only got him here because of an injury that should hopefully only keep him out for a few weeks. Once healthy, he should provide an elite OBP (helps to prop up Jones), and solid production in R, RBI, and SB. Very late to get a potential 5 tool bat.
    • 13.12: Dexter Fowler
      • Mostly liked this pick because he fit my team needs so well. Feeling pretty good on power, I was in pretty desperate need of OBP, Steals, and Runs, which Fowler has the potential to provide. Good value in the 13th round, and if he can improve his steal total (he's too fast to only steal 10 bases), he'll greatly out produce his draft slot.
    • 22.05: Alex Guerrero
      • Sure he doesn't have a spot in the everyday lineup yet, but have to think that's short term. The Dodgers would be crazy to give Juan Uribe an every day spot over this kid. Once playing every day, there's upside to hit 20 HR's with multi position eligibility. If I can stay patient enough to stash him on the bench, he could be a huge part of my team for much of the year.

  3. Blue Hen's team looks to be strong (as usual). Had I known Wieters/Zunino would have been available in rounds 19/20, I definitely would not have paid up for Mesoraco. Also really like TWilson's team, he sniped a few players from me that I had targeted (Semien and Lind especially). As is typical in a 16 team league, every team has definite strengths and weaknesses. Will be fun to see how it plays out.

  4. Closers and Starting Pitchers both going earlier than expected.

  5. I would have waited two rounds to get a closer. Betances and Melancon should be great options, but I'd be happier with Perkins/Rodney 3 rounds later. I also wish I hadn't waited as long on my CI. Morse has the potential to be fine there, but I'd rather a more solid option at such an important position. In general very happy with my draft, I think I have a lot of stable power, even at thin positions (Encarnacion, Hanley, Jones, and Walker). I think my draft success will ultimately come down to Hanely's health, and whether I can scrape enough speed together with Fowler, EY Jr., Jones, and Werth.

I agree with the closers going earlier.

1. My strategy is the same in every league: win saves and OBP, and take risks. Executed quite well this year. I targeted Harper and Yelich for pick 2.13, and got both. Sweet.

2. Love having Harper. One of these years, he's going to win an MVP. Also liked the Wieters/Zunino combo around round 20. Chance to have the 2 best catchers in baseball. Also happy with my closers - Robertson, Allen, Cecil. As I said in the rationale thread, I missed out on OFers, and taking Robertson so early (anticipating a closer run than never came) cost me Jason Heyward. Hoping I can find a good OF on waivers (or my Houston guys pick it up).

3. Wazaaap Guy is always strong, and Jaydog drafted well. My projections have Seattle Zen in first, and I could see it happening (especially if Fielder and Choo return to previous levels).

4. In the early rounds, outfielders went slower than I expected. In the middle rounds, closers did. I was surprised at the talent drop off after round 6 or so, and then again at the depth available in round 10 or so. Also amazed that we finished on time.

5. Nothing I'd do differently in the big picture, but might change some of the picks.

1. My strategy this year was to keep my mind open as much as possible so I can recognize value when it appears. I also spent some time this winter mock drafting and picking Chapman early. Taking him at #42 certainly followed that plan.

2. My favorite picks are Cuddyer at 17.10, Cashner at 13.10 and R Cano at #23. I got Cuddy at a huge discount compared to the other RIBCs. I really like grabbing Cashner as my fourth SP and Cano at 23 is a steal because he does really well in this format. He is forecast to have the most rbi as a MI and only Tulo is forecast to have a higher OPS.

The ones I worry about the most are Shin Soo Choo at 7.10 and Prince Fielder at 4.7. Big question marks. I'll be watching Kole Calhoon, the outfielder most other people would have taken at that spot.

3. As I stated in the other thread, the three teams I believe have the best teams are numbers nine, ten and eleven - ywk, me, and twilson. Blue Hen always takes so many upside risks. Sometimes he hits box cars and wins, sometimes not.

4. I was perpetually surprised at the number of surprising reaches and the number of players I watched sink. Wolfer taking six starting pitchers through round twelve was interesting.

5. Would probably not take Choo during round seven after seeing how many quality outfielders there were available later in the draft.

I also want to state that I, too, was glad that mmkukila decided to take a draft slot away from me. When I envision him, I see William Macy from The Cooler sitting down next to me. You are my cooler, mmkukila, stay away :)
