Subject: 8 Men Out Keeper League 2016 Season 3
Posted by: Khahan
- [440302911] Fri, Jan 29, 2016, 12:44
Welcome back everybody to year 3 of the 8 Men Out Keeper league. Its still early so not much going yet. But I wanted to post the updated constitution due to the change in our keeper rules related to trades:
Positions for 24 round draft:
C, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, SS, RF, CF, LF, MI, CI Util SP, SP, RP, Px4 Bench x 6 DL x2 NAx1
Categories: Runs, Rbi's, HR, SB, BA W, Saves, K's, ERA, Whip
14 points for 1st place in a given category down to 1 point for 14th place. The winner will be the team with the most overall points after the last day of the regular season ends. If there are any make up games scheduled after the last day, those games will count if hosting site rules allow
Season limits: 1350 IP 162 games played per roster slot for hitters
Keeper Rules Managers may keep 0-9 players. Players kept count against the draft round they were chosen in. Draft rounds follow traded players but can be changed to any earlier round in the first draft following the trade. Declaration of the new round is required at the time of keeper declaration. In season pick ups have no draft slot so they cannot be kept. If you do not have multiple picks in a given round, you cannot keep multiple players tied to that round.
Example 1: I draft Ted Williams in round 1. Later in the season I make a trade which brings in Mickey Mantle who was also drafted in round 1. I may keep either Williams or Mantle, but not both.
Example 2: I draft Ryan Sandberg in round 5. Via trade I also acquire Andre Dawson who was drafted in round 5. And via a second trade, I acquire a 2nd 5th round pick. I may now keep both Sandberg and Dawson. (however note - the next season if I do not obtain a second R5 pick I will only be able to keep 1 of the players
Example 3: I draft Ryan Sandberg in round 5 of the 2014 draft. During the season I trade my 2015 round 5 pick. I may no longer keep Sandberg unless I acquire a 5 pick before keepers are delcared.
Example 4: I draft Sandberg in round 5 in 2014. I trade away my round 5 pick in 2015 but acquire Dawson who was also a 2014 round 5 pick. I may not keep either. Dawson's draft round came with him, and come keeper time I dont have a round 5 pick. I may not keep Sandberg any longer as there is no draft slot to put him in. I may declare Dawson as a keeper in any round of 1-4 as long as I have a keeper slot available.
Keepers are due 18 days before the first game of the regular season.
Manager Expectations Managers are expected to play a full season. Giving up part way, ignoring trade offers, your team or the league can result in your removal from the league.
Trades Trades must be balanced against a maximum of 24 players on a given team and 24 rounds of draft for each manager. Outside of that, trades may be vetoed at the commissioner's discretion if he feels there has been collusion or cheating of some kind behind the trade. Otherwise, trades will be assumed to be acceptable and pass after 24 hours unless there is an objection. If an objection is raised there will be a league-wide vote. If more than 50% of managers not involved in the trade vote against the trade, it will be vetoed. Otherwise, it will pass 48 hours after initially being accepted by all managers involved.
If you receive a keeper eligible player via trade, you may move that players keeper round up during the keeper declarations after you received him. All other keeper rules still apply. Example - in 2014 Khahan drafted Billy Hamilton in round 6. During the 2015 I trade him to another manager. In the 2016 keeper declaration Billy Hamilton may be declared as a keeper in any round 1-6 provided the manager has a draft slot free. For all future years that Hamilton remains a keeper that chosen round is now considered his keeper round.
Draft In 2014 the draft will be a randomly ordered 24 round snake draft. Following years the draft will not snake. The order will be determined by how you placed the prior year. Teams finishing in 11-14 place will be in a lottery for the first 4 draft slots. All other teams will be reverse order of finish.
The draft will commence 2 days after keeper declaration and (for now) will be held at Drafttime.com with the league hosting site at Yahoo.
The lottery draft will be held shortly after the end of the regular season (to better facilitate offseason trading).
Draft Guidelines We will have a slow draft as noted at draftime.com Each draft slot will have a 4 hour window to make your pick. If you do not make a pick in the allotted time the next manager may go. You can make up your pick whenever you get back but forfeit the right to any players picked after you missed time. If the draft comes back to you before you make a missed pick, those future picks will be allotted 0 time until you are caught up. The clock will be shut off from 1am to 7am EST M-F and will not run on weekends - subject to change if must meet a deadline. Any portion above in italics is a change in the constitution.
For the 2016 draft - I just want to note that 2015 was a bit frustrating at times. We use draftime.com because it offers some fantastic features to help manage a draft. You can set a general queue that can be dipped into. Or you can set a queue for each individual round with completely different players in it. You can set multiple people up to be able to make your pick for you. And you set your queue so those people can see the whole queue or only the top pick available. Please make use of the tools our draft site has to offer.
And remember, players must be in the Yahoo database to be eligible for the draft.

Have extra keepers and looking for some extra picks? Send me an offer. Willing to trade draft picks for keepers for the 2016 draft. Coming out of 2014 I thought I would have 7-9 keepers set for a few years but injuries and not quite living up to expectations (cough billy Hamilton cough) have set me back. I'll take a 1 year hit on the draft to acquire some long term keepers that can help me over multiple seasons.

Still waiting to hear back/get registration from Knights Radiant. Its a bit early yet so not too worried. Will give him another 2 weeks or so.
If anybody has an updated email address for him, please let me know.
And again this year I'm blowing up my draft. Trading picks for keepers. Trying to set myself up for 2017 and beyond rather than doing a long, drawn out rebuild thru multiple drafts. I've the 2nd overall pick and the second pick in every round (probably the 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th. Maybe the 6th round).
Willing to trade players too. Have the likes of EE (2nd round), J Upton (3rd), Felix Hernandez (4th). Let me know. Everything must go for this huge blowout!!

If you did not get the email, please go to your yahoo account and update that because thats the email it got sent to.

Ok, we're set at Yahoo. At draftime I had already set up the draft with order so I cannot drop managers. I emailed KKB to see if he can drop romee and add Thumqer. If he cannot we'll have to start a new draftime draft and have everybody re-register. Quick and easy.

All prospective keepers posted so far check out as keeper eligible. If anybody wants to check to see if a player they have is keeper eligible all you have to do is:
a) check to see if you drafted him b) go to the league home page and for the year, choose 2015 from the drop down box c) once in 2015 go to transactions, choose your team and choose add. If his name appears on the list, he is not keeper eligible.

I want to take a moment and revisit a discussion from last season. It garnered a little bit of discussion, a little bit of support and a little bit of opposition. The premise when I designed the league rules was to try and keep the draft pool fresh with major league ready players. The proposal last year was that to be draft eligible a player must have some mlb experience. What I'd like to propose we discuss and vote on this year (to be effecitive in 2017, NOT to be effective for this draft as it will have screwed up some draft strats last year):
In order to be keeper eligible a player must have 50AB or 20 IP.
You want to speculate on a September call-up and get a lock in a on a guy, great. Go for it. You want to speculate on a guy who wont hit the majors for 2 years? This was never intended to be a prospect league.

presumably in a career, not in the previous season. if so, we would need to make sure to write that in.

Last year I said this about the proposed rule:
"I think I like the rule. It will decrease the possibilities of somebody drafting a superstud (or perhaps *many* future superstuds) with very late round draft choices and holding them forever as 22nd round draft choices or whatever. That's great for the guy in that position...but my sense is that over time, and maybe over not so long a time, that could greatly unbalance a league."
I think I still like the rule.

Tree, 35 - yes. Just looking at overall. Again, I dont want to discourage speculation. But I never wanted a prospect league. The goal of this is to keep the draft fresh each year. To make the draft important enough that teams can feel like they are accomplishing something either by grabbing a new young stud who emerged (schwarber for example) or restocking for the next year by speculating on MLB ready talent (JP crawford for example is out of this draft even though he has yet to sniff the majors).
I also think going with MLB rookie status will be too restrictive and bite too much into the speculation aspect. I drew those numbers to cover september call ups and make it easy for them to be eligible. But the guy who gets called up for a spot start to replace an injury is still a prospect.
And to re-emphasize I have no intention of having this rule in place for 2016 as I know many people drafted players last year with an eye on this year.

I think it's a good idea, especially if it was part of the founder's intentions. That being said I took a flyer on Maikel Franco in last year's draft. I wouldn't have if I had known it wasn't in the spirit of the league.

So if this change occurs next year, you can draft JP this year in, say, round 7; he doesn't play at all this year but you can still keep him in 2017, right? But if this scenario occurred next year you couldn't keep him in 2018.
|
41 | Khahan
ID: 51120619 Sun, Mar 06, 2016, 14:58

No WG, the rules begin to apply in 2017. If Jp Crawford is drafted this year and doesn't get called up or play at all, he couldn't be a keeper in 2017.
However, the manager who drafted him in 2015 could keep him this year.

And C-1 - Franco is actually a great example. You drafted him, he playd a bit. He's great to keep. That is exactly the kind of prospect that is good to speculate on.

<34/35> So are you saying that in order for the guy to be a keeper he must meet those thresholds at the time of drafting or at the time of keeper declaration?

So far we have some light discussion and 4-0 yes votes. Need a few more voices in the mix here. Tree didn't vote, but he was opposed to the original rule last year. Curious if this change is palatable to him or not.
And to answer Bean's question in 43 a bit more specifically, those guidelines must be met at the time of keeper declaration.

51 - there really isn't much discussion. This is not a question of waivers or anything like that. In the current system (next day) I go in, find a player on the FA list and add him...he appears on my roster the next day.
The proposed change would be same-day transaction. I go in, find a FA I like, add him and he is on my roster that day.
Pros of next day: Lets you plan a head a bit easier and is easier for people who like to do their stuff later in the day
Pros of same day: Immediate access to fill injuries etc and it probably easier for people who like to get their stuff earlier in the day.
Con of next day: can't fill a hole for a sudden line up deficiency that day
Con of same day: roster locks mean you may not be able to drop somebody you want to drop until the next day if you wait too long.

As the guy who proposed same-day transactions, I would say that the opportunity to pick up a player to fill a hole or pick up someone as an injury replacement on the same-day, if I can do it before any games start that day, is a good thing.
I would note that the rule is not likely to lead to humongous more transactions here IMO...becuz in this league, anyone who has been drafted and is cut can't be a keeper, and I think managers hope at the beginning of the year that their choices, even (especially?) low draft choices, can be keepers. In order to make a pick-up, you have to cut one -- and under this format, low draft choices are less likely to be cut, at least early.
As for FF (fastest fingers) pickup of newly anointed closers -- this change makes little difference. Only affects whether he joins your roster today or tomorrow.

4 more yes votes for the change to keeper requirements brings it to 12-0 in favor. That's more than enough to make it official. I'll update the constitution AFTER keepers are declared this year to avoid any confusion.
On the transaction issue, same day picked up 2 more votes, next day picked up 1 more. Its now 7-3 with KR's not clearly stating which he was voting for. Its picking up steam but not quite there yet.

I just want to bring something to the attention of the league and see what everyone thinks. I was offered a trade today. I accepted the trade. An hour later I get an email that says I cant do the trade anymore I accepted a different one instead. Does this seem like a legit thing? I believe once a trade has been offered and accepted the trade is official. Thoughts

If you are referring to our trade, I was working a deal with two different owners. Vampire got back to me 6mins exactly before you did (I have the emails). It's the only reason I accepted his. I apoligized about this. I'll leave it up to the league to decide.
Not trying to be a jerk. I was just working multiple deals before deadline. I was willing to overpay for a couple of different players so I was going all out.
P.S. He hasn't confirmed yet. So I assume he can back out himself.

Its always a tough one Wiggs. What you have to remember is when its over email its all discussion and you may not be the only one the other manager is involved in discussions with.
Until its posted and confirmed here its not official. I always view trade talks as if we are discussing things we can agree upon and I view the posting as the 'contract' or the deal.
I can appreciate that it sucks to lose a trade you think you have. But until its official, its just talks in my eyes.

I don't understand how that is just talk. A trade was offered. I wrote deal. An hour later he says I got a better offer and I had to take it.
If he sent it before me why did it take an hour to tell me when we were literally writing to each other the whole time

Also, please, everybody double check your keepers at draftime and keep up to date on the draft at yahoo. To check draft results:
1. go to our league home page 2. click 'draft' on the menu bar near the top 3. click 'draft results' on the new menu bar near the top
Or short cut and hover your mouse over 'draft' in the menu bar to get a drop down and choose results from there.
You can view all draft choices as they are entered. Please do this often to check for accuracy of entering picks.

140 - KKB confirmed there is a glitch in the site that locks keeper picks as keeper picks even if the keeper is deleted. I had a number of keepers entered and waiting to go and we had so many trades that keepers got flipped around, traded, moved, removed from lists etc. KKB is going to unlock each of those spots today.

Change to the league constitution Only hitters with at least 50 career at bats and pitchers with at least 20 career IP may be declared as a keeper.
Rule goes into effect for our 2017 keeper declaration.

same day transaction vote: yes - 9 votes: C1, gurudan, knight radiant, thumqer, mailedfoot, wg, wiggs, vampire weekend, toral
No - 3 votes: Khahan, tree, bean
2 did not vote. But even if they both vote for next day, same day still has it with 9/14 managers saying same day transactions.

Nice run in round 18. My queue, in order: Swanson (who I grabbed) Nomar Mazara Matt Moore Andrew Heaney
Next 3 picks almost in that order, even.

All, I've somewhat purposefully stashed a lot of pitching depth. If you're looking for SP's I'm looking to trade for either hitters (middle infield perhaps) or 2017 picks. My SP's and their draft round below:
(5) Taijuan Walker (8) Michael Pineda (10) Drew Smyly (11) Shelby Miller (12) Julio Teheran (13) Gio Gonxalez (15) Jon Lester
Lots of upside pitchers.
The other two, Nola and Velasquez, aren't for trade. My email is on yahoo, I can't post here with it linked as it doesn't work.

I made the change. Please note he was drafted in the unlikely event he turns into a keeper.

Vamp - could you also post this on the yahoo league site? that way when I'm going thru keeper lists next year there are multiple notices for me.

I will fix that this evening. Don't do anything with solarte or d Hernandez. Work has been kicking my butt the past 2 weeks. had a quick break here to check in but wont have time to fix until later.

grumble - Wish I had remembered *this* is the reason I truly hate same day transactions. Happened in another league but its still the same. Went to pick up a player. I can't, because the guy I want to drop has already started his game for the day so now I have to drop somebody else or wait and risk not getting the guy I want.

158: it doesn't let you just add him/drop the other guy today but have it go thru tomorrow? I thought it would let you...

With Eugenio Suarez (round 13), Dansby Swanson (round 16) Devon Travis (round 17) and Ian Kinsler (round 6), I can't start them all. Looking to move one of these keeper quality players for a starting pitcher or another quality CI.

Congratulations to Vampire Weekend for a rather dominating win with a 21 point margin of victory!! Well played season.
Also well played and congratulations to Wazup Guy and Toral (WG and Niagra Meridians respectively) for taking home the silver and bronze trophies!
Its time for a period of dormancy as the baseball season ends but I'm looking forward to 2017. Just a reminder, rosters are now frozen. However they looked this morning is how rosters will stay until next year. Trading is now an option again.
As for keepers just a few quick reminders: 1. Players are eligible for keepers only if they have not been on the waiver wire or spent any time as a free agent since the last draft
2. Players must have at least 50AB or 20IP in their career to be keeper eligible (new rule that is in effect for the 2017 keeper deadline).
