We're winding down our draft over in AAA Yahoo. As we close out, please feel free to leave a draft recap in this thread. Common questions people like to see answered are below (same basics every year. I just copy/pasted from Wolfer's thread for the questions).

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also free to post comments or ask questions.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

As usual, I intended on loading up on offense early, with a preference of MI and scarce positions. I intended to draft one or two top SP and be patient on closers even it meant passing on them altogether. In addition, after last year’s old player and injury prone player disaster, I wanted to draft as many young players as possible, especially early in the draft.
Not everything went as I planned. I stuck to offense, but in round 4 I reached a crossroads. Either I was taking Gerrit Cole or I was going to switch my pitching strategy. I took Lorenzo Cain and decided to adjust my pitching strategy on the fly. When my next picks came up, I drafted a top closer instead of a SP or more offense. After many recent years where I have passed on closers or waited for the last few remaining, this decision shocked me. But after missing on some of my SP targets, I talked myself into it. In the end, I like the way my roster looks, even while recognizing that I can stand to pick up some SP acquisitions during the season. I do that every year anyway so this will be no different. I’m looking forward to see how it will play out. As for young players, I do think I stuck to this goal with most of my picks. I still drafted a few older vets, but I consider them steady players.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

A few favorites based on “I’m happy to root for them and am excited about their potential”: Mookie Betts at 2.05, Conforto at 13.12

A few favorites based on value: Freeman at 5.12, Yelich at 8.05

I’m looking forward to Guru’s draft comparison post because looking at the other drafts it looks like a got a lot of guys later than they were going on average. Conforto, Bour, Myers, and Vogt all went between picks 188-196 in the RIBC. I got them at 204, 277, 236, and 245.

Do-overs: hmm, maybe Samardzija at 12.05. I do think he is in for a bounce back year, but he has been shelled this spring, so it’s not looking good at the moment. Maybe I should have taken Kazmir or a second closer.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Based purely on hunch and the eye test, since I only track projections for my team and in no particular order: C1-NRB, maspero and Sanfordors.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I had kind of hoped that a stronger closer run would kick in after I took Familia at 6.05, but only 5 more closers went between him and my next pick at 7.12. There was good patience my managers not to panic as the top tier closers came off the board.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Not really. Once I decided to break from my original idea on pitching, I feel like I was able to adjust and take some starters who have potential to outperform their draft position and I like the way my offense shapes up. Starting the year with one clear closer and a few potential save poachers is stronger than I am used to so overall I feel better than past seasons.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan was two hitters, then a SP, then best available talent. I was planning on waiting on 1B, since it is pretty deep IMHO. Take another SP in the 7th or 8th rd. Take some closers before the 10th rd and get some SP later.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I like Polanco at 39 and Pujols at 71. Maybe I could have waited on Pujols another round and have taken Franco. Paxton in the 24th already sent to the minors.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

loki and uptown Bombers.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I didn't feel we had a lot of positional runs. It also seems like most teams really valued youth over vets.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I wish I would have drafted Franco and Bruce-think he was a steal so late in the draft. I wish I would have paid more attention to my CI earlier.

Addendum (I posted this in the other forum, but thought it was useful here as well):

According to Guru's consolidated results, I picked 15 players at their max draft position and 3 more one pick away from max, though Arenado, Betts and Familia had little differential between max pick and their average. I picked 2 players at their minimum draft position.

1. What was your plan entering the draft? Where you able to execute your plan?

Since the beginning of playing at the ROTOGURU, I never had this high a pick. So this year evolved around making early solid selections and filling in the gaps. The last few years showed a pool high in speed but short on power. Also filling MI spots with power seemed a winning strategy. According to Dave's consolidation chart, my 1st 5 picks were the minimums in all the leagues. So it won't take long to see if I'm the smartest GURUPIE, or the dumbest.

What were your favorite picks and which would you do over?

Corey Seager, Jay Bruce, and Manny Machado are my favorites and I did a poor job of not stepping in sooner on the closer run.

Looking over teams who's your favorite?

That's easy. Who stays the heathiest and picks up a rookie who kills it in August.

What surprised you most about the draft?

I always find it fascinating how each manager is swayed by specific information. Expert #1 hates Altuve, Dee Gordon, and Nolan Arenado while #2 picks Arenado as MVP, Altuve as batting champ etc.

If you had a do over what would change?

I would have taken my 2nd closer sooner.

Instead of posting rationales ( I hadn't been to the forum until well into the draft ), I thought I would just address them here.

1. What was your plan entering the draft? Where you able to execute your plan?

I decided to address my infield early on. In most recent drafts in other years , my MI'ers were woefully inadequate and overlooked, and I scrambled to fill out those positions late. With Altuve/Davis/Sano and Lindor taken with 4 of my first 5 picks I feel I have a solid infield base to build a team around. In addition, with Duda and Forsyth added by round 14 my infield was totally filled out. Adding Solarte in round 22 with his 3 position flexibility, I have the ability to plug and play as schedule dictates

I normally like to wait until at least round 7 to take a starter, but couldn't resist the opportunity to pick Cole in round 4. Later rounding out starters with Wacha 8.06, Matz 11.11, Taijuan Walker 161.16 and Heaney 18.06 I think I assembled a stable of young hurlers with tremendous upside. But as we all know, upside is an unknown.

Grabbed two solid closers with Allen and Ramos, and filled out my staff with Betances/O'Day/Strop. All set up guys with great strikeout stats. My hope is with only 5 starters, what I may lose in W's, I can make up with solid %'s. Betances is the wildcard with his tremendous K/9 stats ( plus and early opportunity to close while Chapman and now possibly Miller are on the shelf).

I'm a little worried about how I constructed my OF with Pence/Piscotty/Maybin ( hurt )/Rosario/Dyson ( hurt ) and Bradley. But I do have the opportunity to slot Davis in there with his dual flexibility

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
Betances ( I'm a Yankee fan )
Do over, Maybin. I didn't even realize he was hurt when I drafted him

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I obviously like my team. Using Rotowires draft software, it projects at the top, but no doubt because I also use their rankings. After mine came Ksoze, Wiggs, Loki, Beancline, and Boozer.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Nothing really

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Probably drafting Maybin, when I did, not knowing he was injured. Round 15 was too early for that, although I think he will be solid when he's back to top shape
