RIBC PCL AAA Managers: This thread is for your (optional) overall comments on the draft. You may use the questions below as a guide, or simply say what you want to say.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also free to post comments or ask questions.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Take Hisashi Iwakuma for the seventh straight year. No, I was thwarted by the devious bastards at Drafttime!

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I really like my team. I may be light in steals if J Villar stinks. I think I will get great value from Aroldis Chapman at #83. I like the fact that as much as I didn't want Ian Desmond, I got him at #179.

I might not have taken Jay Bruce in the tenth round as I may have got him later, but looking at who was taken around him, I can't say that I would want to do it over. There were times I was questioning my decision to take Greinke over Verlander, probably 90% of managers would not agree with me. But a lot of that has to do with Zack's poor Spring, which I ignore as it is just noise.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like Tosh's team, well balanced, no gaping holes. I also really like Jeff G's squad. Sparkyanne's intrigues me, she spent a lot on her infield, if her upside gambles on her starters pay off, she's in great shape. Also like mjd.

Valkyrie had one pre-season gamble pay off - Miguel Sano, but Mad Bum, the Shark and Daniel Murphy all starting the season hurt is really going to hamper his chances. It looks like he drafted 9 outfielders, but Nelson Cruz is UTIL, Ryan Braun will qualify at first quickly and Castellanos is really his third baseman. No real need to keep two catchers now.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I'll tell you what didn't surprise me, a handful of managers took over an hour each and every time they made a pick. Deadairallnight did not use an autopick the entire draft, nor did the Commish or Thumqer. Jordan only took his final selection via autopick. And el fatador only used it once. Some managers got fed up with the delays, one manager used the ol’ “hey, relax” reply but thankfully no one used the, “hey, I’ve got a life” old trope.

Two teams only drafted three starting pitchers – Species and gramazins. And I don’t know what you call Matt Harvey, gramazins, so maybe I should say two. I don’t think I’ve seen a team wait until the 14th round to take his first starter. Can’t imagine this strategy working. Two teams punting saves, with wolfer completely abstaining from all relievers.

El fatador drafting thirteen pitchers was certainly surprising. With Greg Bird as his only first baseman, I foresee a waiver claim on the horizon.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I may be regretting not taking Aaron Judge with my second round pick. I still like Lindor over Your Honor, but even with some regression, he could still be a league winner.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
My basic strategy is to try to build a balanced team, get the best player on the board, and don’t lose sight of tier drop offs and position scarcity. Also decided as I said in rationales to fill out starting hitter slots before grabbing my MR, which I feel is deeper than people think.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
No real faves but excited to watch much Bryce Harper this season. Also glad I have two closers secure in their job without grabbing early.

Do over Ervin Santana. My bad for not checking his health status when setting a queue.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I like Tosh, air,Zen,Species. With Species I’m interested to see how his pitching ends up scoring with so few starters buy a deep non starters.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Very surprised how different my draft rankings were than everyone else. Seemed like I was on a different page than everyone else. I do tend to draft towards the ratios. Actually worries me that I was off, maybe I’d feel better if my queues were picked clean. We’ll see. Also anticipated a closer run would have happened earlier, but I think there was more mid tier depth that allowed folks to wait.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?
No, but check back with me in September.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Obviously my strategy was to change it up this year. An evolving strategy in Fantasy Baseball has been the use of high inning, high K/9, low ratio relief pitchers even without the benefit of saves. Considering the trend in expanded bullpens and multi-inning relief studs to offset a lesser reliance upon starting pitchers, it seems like the benefit of K and wins from starters is diminishing. Plus, once you get beyond the top 40 or 50 starters the quality really goes down.

So, my strategy was to load up on hitting (which most of us do anyway), get as many good to decent closers as I could, have 2 or 3 good starters and augment the rest of my IP with strong middle relievers. The hope is to dominate ratios (my goal is 13 or more points in each), be decent to strong in saves (10+ points) and squeak out 5 or 6 points in W and K. The entire pitching mix hopefully puts me on par with the other contenders, and hope that my heavy hitting investments pay off on that side of the ledger.

The risk involves the volatility of non-closer relievers. Did all of these guys blow through their arms, or are all of these converted starters good to go for another year of premium workload? Several of these guys could be wasted picks and new Chad Greens will emerge from obscurity and be plucked from the waiver wire.....

That said, I did pretty much execute as planned. Not only did I get some guys I really wanted in Chad Green and Brad Peacock, but Nate Jones is now splitting closer duties to start the year and Mychal Givens could also be in the mix for some saves in the absence of Britton.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Judge at 2.07 sure seems like a bargain. I think Ian Happ will be a glorious bargain at 8.07 and I also feel strongly that Delino Deshields at 10.07 will comfortably outperform Billy Hamilton in the Player Rater, approaching him in SB while performing significantly better in ratios. Nate Jones at 16.07 could be a lucky pick given the news post-draft, while Carlos Gonzalez could be a premium pick at 17.10, even if I only play him vs RHP

I don't like that I was sort of forced into taking Trevor Story at 5.10, but my MI queue was decimated and the SS queue looked even worse, so I am gambling on a bit of a bounceback year from him - hell he might even hit 4th this year. I hope Blake Treinen at 10.07 holds onto the job this year since I took him over Morrow. Everyone from the 20th round on is pretty much a shot in the dark anyway/waiver fodder for streaming/injury replacements.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like Tosh's team. He seemed to get good value at many of his turns. WG hit on some nice steals in Schwarber, Acuna, Haniger and Kingery and will be dangerous as always.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Not much, as we have come to expect closer and MI runs in RIBC.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

The only thing would be to somehow make the time to track the draft via excel or website application to see how my team was trending categorically so I could make adjustments on the fly. Low in OBP? Go one direction. Need SLG - go another direction, etc. But once I made the decision to use the RP-heavy strategy for pitching it was a relatively easy draft for me.
